Hello, everyone!

Pros:
* Can view the video track and audio track information of the original video on the upper right side on this program.
* It has a sweet graphical interface.
* It is rather straightforward to use.
* It provides "Customize settings" for the output videos.
* It converts video fast.

Cons:
* when I installed this program, a software informer which is no need on my computer will also be installed.
* During the conversion, it takes up 100% of CPU usage of my computer.

Summary:
It's OK. It basically solves the video conversion problem. I think Moyea Video4Web Converter on playerdiy.com, which is free, is also worthy to try - http://www.playerdiy.com/downloads/converter/

Installed on Win XP sp2. It reported that it was activated, but at first run it asked me to buy the program. I reentered the activation info and it accepted the entry.

I picked the first file on my hard drive, an AVI file. I tested the file before encoding and it worked fine. Upon encoding to MP$ format I got the following Fail:

TODO: has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Yep, inconvenience. I hope it de-installs smoothly.

I downloaded and installed it on RC Win7. At the end of the install (during some extraction) I recieved an error that there was not enough storage to complete the install, then it seemed like it was installed, but the licence key was not working. I was worth a try.

Installed this with the intent to try to convert video files for my Creative Zen Plus V. Part of the installation included installing the Windows Media Player 11 runtime library. I don't have -- and don't want -- WMP 11. I have been using WMP 9 for encoding.

I ran a test file conversion, which worked quite nicely. However, when I connected my Zen Plus V, my computer would no longer recognize it! Apparently, loading this & the WMP 11 runtime knocked out the WMP 9 stuff that I had been using, and which worked fine with my Zen Plus. It took going back to a restore point before the installation of the Extra Video Converter Pro to get things working again.

The program looked promising, but it disables the device that I would want to use it with!

I know this comment will get a lot of thumbs down; I really don't care. It may be helpful to some.

I do a ton of converting and I have the following that I dl'd from GAOTD (a site I like very much btw): Z video converter, Moyea v.c., Aimersoft v.c., and Total v.c.

My favorite was always Z v.c. even tho it had the annoying bug of only allowing 3 or 4 titles to be added to the list to be converted at a time, but at least the results were good. Total v.c. on the other hand always messes up the audio and is a POS.

Then I got Any Video Converter (from here? I can't remember) and believe me it is the converter you want. Highlight 30 vids and it adds them seamlessly, something that would take forever with Z. Get this and compare it to today's offering and see what you think. And no, I'm not downloading this....boo hiss...LOL. Any Video Converter is all I need. Okey dokey? Let the thumbs down begin. (Pretty sure this msg will get yanked by gaotd, most of mine do :-)

I suppose a person could do much worse than to use this program for their video conversion needs. I also wouldn’t think a user needs a computer science degree to figure out what to do. So does that make today’s GOTD a thumbs up winner? Not necessarily because intuitiveness and usability are not one in the same. The quality of this programs output is no worse than Format Factory or any of the other alternatives mentioned so far. So as far as that goes then sure, I’ll take a fully licensed product over some freeware alternative 98% of the time. With freeware, you don’t exactly get some developer spending countless hours providing support and updating their program all for nothing. Like the saying goes, no one does anything for nothing, with the exception of some zealous monk.

A couple of things I look for in any program is how comfortable do I feel working with that program, and trusting it won’t add more stress than I already have working to pay my bills; And that’s where I find myself hesitant to keep this program. The developer opted out of incorporating a Help file within the program itself. You have to go online to their site for any tech support, and the only advantage I see with that strategy is it maximizes the user’s exposure to their nags. It leaves me with the feeling that the developer prioritized their greed over convenience for a user. And that leaves me with the feeling that I’ll be better off uninstalling this program.

(Incidentally, I would highly recommend using a good uninstaller if you decide to do so. My killer of choice is Revo.)

Same as #47 Memory error on install except using Vista 64 & Win 7. Running Intel 2 core Quad 10G RAM 1TB+ free disk space. Problems with Super also - it works on XP but not 64 bit new system. The search continues! This one is a sacrifice to the Great computer God bit bucket!

#13: "After deinstalling this software explorer.exe crashes every time when i right-click an avi-file within windows explorer."

I have no idea what your full error message says, but FWIW... this can happen if you broke one of the apps set-up in your right click menu for avi files. A utility that lets you remove apps from that right click, context menu might help to diagnose which app, or maybe try the Explorer Tools menu -> Folder Options -> File Types tab... see what you have set for avi files? reinstall the one that's broken.

* * *

#14: "I tried to convert a VOB ... Anyone know how to solve this problem?"

??? Worked for me. I re-authored a DVD on my hard drive using Shrink to only 1 VOB with only 1 audio track, so maybe that will help? Otherwise you may have a problem with one or more Direct Show filters you have installed. Check out videohelp.com &/or doom9.org for plenty of info, methods, guides, software etc on what you're after.

* * *

#15: "2. Not Good – Update the system files."

Adds 8 files, though not everyone will have these already installed... files are for Real, Quicktime, & ffdshow FWIW.

* * *

#21: "Please, can Extra Video Converter Pro use more than one processor core?"

In XP Pro SP3 32, task mgr shows ~ 25% total usage spread across 2 cores of a quad. The 25% is average for this sort of app, though usually it just involves 1 core. FWIW, you can get some benefits from multiple cores without coming close to maxing each one, &/or you can come close to maxing each core with no benefit to total encoding speed -- I've experienced both -- so take what I see in task mgr with a grain of salt. The champ for me is Sony Vegas: it's slow resizing, but encoding DVD mpg2, without a re-size, maxes 4 cores & slightly taps the ATI GPU making it very, very fast.

#25: "to numbers 3 and 7 format factory did not convert my movie right. it actually make the file bigger. when i used format factory it made an avi file the size of 745mb to an 1.2 gb mp4 file. how come this happened?"

They have HUGE tractors on a big farm, while mini-tractors are used to mow lawns. Same thing with video -- you can have 2 files, 1 huge & 1 relatively tiny, but still the same format... like the word tractor, the format of a file only describes the type of file, & nothing about what's in it. Whether you're using Format Factory or today's GOTD, the frame size of the output file, the bit rate, & the duration of video determine how big an output file will be. In Format Factory you needed to set the bit rate lower, & make sure you weren't enlarging the frame (viewing window) size.

* * *

#26: "Would someone, please, tell all of us the difference between Extra Video Converter and Extra Video Converter Pro."

In tech terms, night & day... In results -- for the formats the non-pro version handles, not a huge difference.

Extra Video Converter Pro is a step up from the Extra Video Converter [without the Pro] featured on GOTD not too long ago. Gone is the playful interface, replaced by a GUI that's all business. Also gone is the relatively small program size, as the program's folder grew from 11 MB to 120.

Extra Video Converter Pro brings together a lot of separate apps &/or code libraries, like most of the converters found at videohelp.com, including the popular Super & Format Factory. I think it's easier for a novice to use, with more integration & format presets, but that's strictly my opinion. By using all these separate apps, you get the benefit of a lot of specialized, highly focused software development, that would be difficult if not impossible to duplicate in-house. The downside, & it is a pretty big one, is that you risk conflict with other software doing the same thing. [That's why I use a modified install of Super, & don't use Format Factory myself]

Video software handling in Windows is a bit weak to start with, & when the same programs are installed in more than 1 place, other programs & Windows itself easily become confused over which one to use... The more correct way to do things is to install software like your codecs separately, so there's only 1 copy for everything else to use. Extra Video Converter Pro, like Super & Format Factory want to save you the hassle of these individual downloads & installations, so they each bundle individual apps & code in their packaging. By doing this Extra Video Converter Pro might conflict with Quicktime, Real, ffdshow, AC3 filter, Xvid, 3ivx & more, whether you had them installed individually or as part of another package. If all you install is one of these conversion apps, you probably won't have a problem. If you re-install the individual apps, again likely no prob. If you want to run more than 1 conversion app, & both use the same stuff, your odds of success go down. If you remove Extra Video Converter Pro, there's a decent chance your other video software might stop working properly, because Windows has been set to look for these components in the Converter Pro folder, & now it's missing.

Extra Video Converter Pro's window or GUI is pretty straightforward -- not a lot of help or hand-holding needed. You add your video [it will accept DVD VOB files - re-author in Shrink to get 1 VOB], & set your output folder. Then (from the left) select output file type [avi, MPEG, iPod etc], & choose a pre-set -- choosing "Customize setting" or clicking the Setting button opens a dialog that lets you set things like bit rate & fps... unfortunately choices for aspect -- i.e. 4:3, 16:9 etc -- are weak, & the only codec for avi is a very limited setting for Xvid. In the upper right hand corner is an oval icon or button that opens another dialog for preview. On my PC it didn't always show a video window, depending on the kind of file imported, but more importantly you'll see two oval sliders on the video progress bar... drag those to set the start/stop times [when you want your video to start & end]. This works well if you want to start at or very near the beginning of a video, but when set further in it causes a loooong delay as Converter Pro works it's way through the video to get to that point. The big round button obviously starts/stops conversion. Clicking the "!" button in the lower left corner shows you the About box, including your GOTD registration.

Conversion speed is towards the better end of Good -- if you have an ATI graphics card with ATI's Avivo installed [or the nvidia equivalent] there's no comparison to using stream processing, but you don't have nearly as many output settings as the Converter Pro. Quality is a good balance -- you can have highest quality, or speed, but not both, so developers of apps like this always have to compromise... if you want higher quality, use VirtualDub & use multiple encoding passes.

All in all I'd recommend Extra Video Converter Pro if that's all you're going to use, or if you want & can deal with things like the bundled ffdshow, Quicktime etc. If you are building a video toolbox, & don't want (or know how) to deal with these potential conflicts, I'd suggest staying away from this, or Super, or Format Factory.

i would not recommend a program that increases the size of a file instead of shrinking it.
i tried format factory and did not like it.
i am going to try this program out to see if it will shrink my movie files down to a portable size.

Super is nice. But the things is so cluttered and unfriendly I felt. Non of it is pre-configured. Like the setting for mp 4 , we have to set it.

It is so scary. May be if you knew exact ratio for the out put video and the audio format which will be right for the video. Or else, video will end up with audio lagging behind.

It is more hard work. Instant not.

1. Good - Install good on XP Media Center Edition 2002 with SP 3.
2. Not Good - Update the system files.
3. Not Good – Difficulty to paste name and registration code.
4. Good - Converted files are with very good quality!
5. Not Good - HD QT .mov format to .avi format you do not have HD option you have (frame ratio) 640x480 or 320x240 pix. It will change the ratio of the frame and everything will look very funny even in Settings is chosen Aspect ratio Original.
6. Good - Conversation to MPEG if it is MPEG2 Super Video CD – NTS Mode for North America frame ratio is good and quality high
7. Not Good Name of the source and converted files has to be the same, can not be changed.
8. Not Good – Settings do not give you chase to change too many parameters.
9. Not Good – Step by Step Guide in the website do not tell you that the codec and parameters have to be selected from pop-down menus not through window setting. Only On-line not too good help.
10. Good – Very fast converter.
11. Not Good - The preview screen is showing you only file which will be converted.

In general can be used by hobbyists. Do not advice to buy full license even if you are semi pro will be disappointed.

This program does what it says. It will convert handle of your video needs. Is it worth the asking price? That is for you to decide. Besides it is free today. As an added bonus the registration key is contained in the readme file. You can download the demo from the vendor's site and have it to install it anytime. Thumbs up. Thank you GAOTD team and Extra Software Inc.

It's amazing to me that even after all of these years the makers of Super still have not improved their site. I've been through their pages before trying to find a download link. Luckily I read from others that post here about all the garbage that Super installs. Garbage that is not deleted during an uninstall. I avoided Super and would advise others to do the same. Stick with today's offering or Format Factory.

I love GOATD and visit almost everyday and so do my small kids.
I know it's a personal issue, but I try to keep bad language away
from them with filters etc. If you GAOTD do not screen the language
of your visitors more carefully, I and my kids and friends and relations that I will inform will no longer visit.

Comment #4 made what many today refer to as "mild" and "acceptable" "profanity." There are many who are still offended by such thisngs.

I'm not here to preach but most of the sites I visit like forums etc., filter out such for the benefits for the few "prudes" left in the world.

I know the standard answer is you don't have to visit or "lighten up" or "free speech." Well, I will just get my freeware of the day from cnet, etc.

I like this site, and I think comment #4 was just an oversight on the part of GAOTD. But it does offend me, I'm glad I saw it before my kids did. I will block today's offering from them or rather download it myself as a "favor" for them.

Thanks

Save yourself some time. Google... "DeVeDe", it runs on both Linux and Windows. You can throw just about any video file on it (AVI,FLV,DIVX--etc) and it will convert the file into a ISO DVD. From there you burn it as a image (ISO) file into a DVD using your favorite burning program. No registration, no confusing configurations...You select DVD add file (s) in the right window pane, click NTSC (if you live in North America. If the file is too long, it can shrink it for you.

Did I mention it is free?

Claims to support all popular video formats however, to support Divx, XviD and RM/RMVB video formats you need to install additional Codex.

To support WMV/ASF video format You need Windows Media 9 runtime and to support MOV video format you need QuickTime Player.

And yes, I realize I haven't given my opinion of the day's giveaway. I'm just about to test the prog, and will post a review soon. It just bugs the crap out of me that some folks don't bother to utilize the site as intended before shoving other (tricky download?) progs in front of us. And in this case, you didn't really even bother to compare apples (GOTD) to oranges (whatever the heck that was you recommended). *raspberries*

I had trouble with 'Extra' software, de-installed it all and bought a 'AVS' licence which does it all. ;)

Henkie,

You are probably using InterNet Explorer. Following agent01's instructions I had no problems DL'ing it using FireFox 3.5.2

@Henkie:
Try here: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

This is not a recommendation, although I have used SUPER, I have never liked it very much.

@#1,

Many thanks for the link to Super. If you know something as good as that for editing and merging videos, I would be very happy.

@Henkie and anyone else.

The best place to download Super is at Filehippo dot com

It's under the Multimedia section

This is a good program and will do what is says it will do. Be sure to take your time at first because it is a little different than some others in how it is arranged.

I said it is good and I don't think is is actually great
There are a lot of converters out there and many are good as well so choose what is best for your needs.
