I have installed and tried about four times to get this software to rip to an mpeg4 format and it causes an error and crashes every time. Will tinker a few more times and then uninstall. sounds like exactly what I was looking for. So hopefully I can get it to run.

An easier alternative is just to buy a video camera which shoots in the MPEG-4 format. Then, just play your videos and record them with your camcorder.. and transfer to computer.
Hopefully I have made life easier for someone.
Thanks.

As you can see in the 1st comment & the GOTD blog, PCHand Screen Suite had to be pulled -- if you need/want a screen capture app now, my suggestion FWIW would be to search the GOTD site for prior offers -- in the comments you'll most always find alternatives.
The current GOTD, Extra DVD to iPhone Ripper, re-records DVD video in your choice of several, iPhone compatible formats. By re-recording a playing DVD you don't have to worry about *most* DRM [region codes could still pose a problem, since if you can't play the DVD, you can't record it]. While you lose a bit of quality re-recording (as opposed to working with the original digital audio/video), you don't have the hassles that go with removing DRM -- *If* that's an issue for you -- & it's easy to separately record most parts of a DVD [e.g. Extras etc]. Like many other audio/video converter lines, different versions (like Extra DVD to iPhone Ripper) let you pay for just the capabilities you want/need, at the same time maybe making things less confusing since you don't have so many format choices. Whether you'll be able to use the video it produces on your non-Apple device depends on what you have & what formats it requires/uses... it outputs mp4 or H264 video [customizable from 128 X 96 thru full, 1080 HD] & AAC audio [only Mono & Stereo].
Extra DVD to iPhone Ripper uses a Register button to enter the key, but once you do, the button doesn't go away -- I didn't see any indication [other than the key made it to the registry] that registration worked. The app includes the Xvid codec, along with files from Real [perhaps left in place from full versions of their converters/rippers?]. It doesn't do much to the registry, & beyond the Xvid codec, does nothing to Windows. Extra DVD to iPhone Ripper takes up ~26MB on your hdd, in 122 files, 7 folders. Ffmpeg handles the audio/video decoding/encoding. Overall speed of conversion is fair, & surprisingly good for a re-recorder -- the DVD does not play real-time, but advances in rapid spurts [I assume 1 for every GOP (if you don't know what that means, don't worry about it -- it's irrelevant)].
The past few versions of Extra's software offered on GOTD didn't work well on my rig (sometimes not at all), but today's does, apparently without a problem. Alternatives are plenty [in itself a source of complaints whenever GOTD features a ripper &/or converter], though most all do not re-record, meaning they will not accept any DVD [files or disc] with DRM. I've got dozens of audio/video related apps, & IMHO the ideal, absolutely perfect converter [or method] doesn't exist -- & if it did that doesn't mean it'd suit anyone else. Nor is every video or audio file perfect. The converter that works perfectly one time may not work at all the next time you try it with different source audio/video.
Personally I like Xilisoft's Ripper Ultimate [an older GOTD], though that version's getting old & is a bit slow. The Fast/WinX converters/rippers have improved, & work at roughly 2X average speed, but don't let you set peak & average bit rate -- a fairly big con when making files small. Most of the time now I use A's Video Converter [free -- uses ATI graphics card, though *I Think* it *might* work without it] is *Fast* at 400 - 800 fps during conversion [720 X 480 -> 320 X 240][speed depends on format], but it's buggy & has no frills. Quality is also just a bit lower. For really the best quality video frame re-size I use VirtualDub, but that can require AviSynth [+ often DGIndex] if V/Dub won't accept the original format, & it's time consuming, since most of the time I have to convert to an intermediate avi file, then encode that to something like H264. As always, videohelp.com has many alternatives available for d/load.

This is ok for iPhone users although it is very simple and doesn't do much. This is not as good as the previous GAOTD ConvertVid (more formats) and wondershare video to ipod converter. There is a free FLV to MP4 converter, although it is slow. This GAOTD is really only good for extracting media files from the DVD

I would recommend FormatFactory, from Formatoz.com over this download. It can rip DVDs and convert video files to most formats. It also converts audio and image files between most formats. It's pretty much the swiss army knife of media converters.

Yeah loved the program and have to agree with Media Coder and would like to see the software that converted both ways ;-)
Where is Ashraf today to give us his review of the software????

Review:
PROS:
* Smooth download/installation/registration on Win 7 (x32) OS.
* User's own name may be used for program registration.
* GUI is attractive, simple, easy-to-understand, easy-to-navigate.
* Program supports Apple iPhone MPEG-4 & H.264 formats.
* Program offers numerous settings/options/designations for Apple iPhone-supported formats.
* Program has low-level learning curve, which makes it easy to use and operate.
* Quality of resulting converted output is good.
CONS:
* No Local Help File contained within program.
* Within Settings menu, developer misleadingly lists formats not supported by program.
* Price of program is way too high, compared with equally capable freeware alternatives that are much more feature-rich.
Summary: - Although this program is useful for iPhone users, it is very limited compared with other freeware alternatives that offer many more features - so, for this reason (and the listing of non-supported formats), I would not recommend today's giveaway.
