The program runs very very slow. It installs a new default printer and a profusion of registry keys. I use Wise Jetsearch which is lightning-fast. This one I uninstalled. I do not often leave a comment but this one annoyed me.

I'm amused/annoyed by the amount of complaints that free software requires the recipient to do some work assessing whether the product is useful to them.

OTOH, I think complaints about troubles activating are valid. It downloads just fine. Install seemed to go just fine. Input of registration key went fine. Then it says wait for an activation email. Still waiting.

Is this better than 'Search Everything' which is free?

Doug R,

Thanks...I was not aware.

Webeye, From knowing, to the finding :-)

I searched for it, found it here, and installed it:

Doug R, -

"Everything" does not index file content; it strictly creates an index of the file names within a directory and is practically useless for anyone with a copious amount of data and non-descriptive file names like "resume 1, resume 2, resume 3," etc. If I need to find all of the resumes containing "laser or lasers" as well as "process or process development" and "engineer or engineering," amongst 160,000 resumes stored locally, Everything is about as useful as a third leg for a task like that.

Doug R, hi - where is this search everything? Are to speaking about an attachment to the dreadful Chrome browser?

Doug R, THANK YOU! I had Wise JetSearch, which was awesome but can't index my NAS. I installed "Everything" and it indexed my NAS systems and other attached storage. They are big and this was FAST, and the results are amazing. I wouldn't have found "Everything" without YOU! THANK YOU!!! It's free, it's fast, works well with my crazy jumbled mess. AWESOME! Sir, you ROCK! What other stuff do you like? You seems to know things.

Morgan Pierce, Go to Ninite and download 'Everything'.

Morgan Pierce, Everything is a very quick replacement for the often sluggish Windows search, especially in older versions of Windows, where Windows search could be as slow as molasses in the Antartic winter. Another good alternative is Snowbird. Both can be found with a simple search, or, if I don't get in trouble, at the Portable Freeware Collection site.

I always recommend portables - also known as Free Standing Software - because you avoid the problems that Bruce mentioned below in that you don't have to worry that the install program's uninstaller leaves gunk behind (many, many do!). Gunk that can interfere with other programs. In fact, just installing many programs can interfere with other programs. With a portable you just download, or unzip, the program in some folder of your choice, and you're ready to go. Just note where that folder is - in case you want to put a shortcut on your desktop or add it to your programs menu, or both (instructions can be found in Windows Help if you don't know how) - and, if you don't like the program on your computer, throw the folder away. Installing programs is often not needed. After all, you don't need to be welded into the pedals, shift lever, and steering wheel to drive your car. And many programs can just sit on top of Windows and work just fine.

The portable might put a tiny file or 2 in a folder called Application Data, or a harmless entry or 2 in your registry, but they won't effect other programs. And the site I mentioned has a category that's called Stealth, that will tell you if the program does anything like that, so you can even hunt those things down and throw them away, or select a program that doesn't install anything outside it's own folder. I can ensure you that most installed programs put in a LOT more junk and often have sloppy uninstallers that don't get it all out. And some of that can effect other programs in your computer.

But, to be fair, EverDoc is a more complex business or research like organizer that can do things like search files you've stored in the cloud - and coordinate those with files you've stored on your computer - and it claims to read text off of any documents you've scanned into your computer, which most simple search programs don't. Hope that helps.

Colin - given that you can download "EverDoc 2023" and try it - for free - from the Abelssoft website, you could ascertain for yourself if it'll do this "index searching" (rather than 'full text searching').

JayUU: It is reasonable to expect the software developer to describe the features of its program. In terms of productivity, there is a HUGE difference between searching text on demand, and having an index of text already prepared ahead of time.
What you are suggesting is that interested people download the software, install it, try it to see what happens. Then they are faced with the problem of uninstalling useless software--and then tracking down all the garbage software inevitably leave behind after being uninstalled.

Bruce Fraser,

If you're on this website and capable of problem solving or optimizing your life without someone handing a solution to you on a silver platter, a trait otherwise known as self-reliance, I might suggest you utilize the cornucopia of freeware on this site to obtain a program dedicated to comprehensively uninstalling & monitoring new installations to keep track of the various directories they deposit files for future uninstalls.

Can anyone confirm that this software uses index searching? Can't see anything about it on this site or on the Abelssoft site. Perhaps the developer can comment.

On a quick appraisal - maybe I'm wrong?
The installation procedure is protracted - Takes two emails and requires you to hand out info.
During install it re-boots your computer so any other open programs are closed with possible data loss
I can't see anything "automatic"
You have to manually select folders to be searched and sub folders are not searched.
It does not search file content.
You have to add key words manually.
It infers you should abandon your existing document folders and store your documents in a new folder they have invented.
Microsoft file explorer search is much more helpful.
