HELP, where is the activation code and the registration key???

Installs fine as long as you install it to Program Files. I tried to put it under my utilities directory and it would not register. Too bad they did not say that in instructions.

Freeware alternative from soundforge - http://sourceforge.net/projects/smoz/

“SMOz (Start Menu Organizer) is a tool that can organize the Windows start menu. SMOz has an easy to use interface with undo/redo support, batch organization, and can associate start menu items with installed programs to ease management of start menu.”

I wish it didn't take so long for a post to show up. Mine have been stuck "awaiting moderation" for hours now and by the time they show up, the giveaway will probably have ended and I'll never find out what to do about the problem of the program needing a name and license number to be registered, but no name and license was ever provided in the readme or during installation!

#114, I too had a crash of the app on my xp machine first time I tried to use it to delete some items I didn't need in startup. The error message stated "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled"

And I had to close the ESO. I started it up again and the second time, it worked fine.

To #3:

30 thumbs down and no reviews does not necessarily mean that no one installed it on their computer. They could install it on their computer, and then if they like or don't like the software, they rate it. But they don't have to comment on it.

A crane calling in the shade.
Its young answers it.
I have a good goblet.
I will share it with you.

This refers to the involuntary influence of a man's inner being upon persons of kindred spirit. The crane need not show itself on a high hill. It may be quite hidden when it sounds its call; yet its young will hear its note, will recognize it and give answer. Where there is a joyous mood, there a comrade will appear to share a glass of wine.

This is the echo awakened in men through spiritual attraction. Whenever a feeling is voiced with truth and frankness, whenever a deed is the clear expression of sentiment, a mysterious and far-reaching influence is exerted. At first it acts on those who are inwardly receptive. But the circle grows larger and larger. The root of all influence lies in one's own inner being: given true and vigorous expression in word and deed, its effect is great. The effect is but the reflection of something that emanates from one's own heart. Any deliberate intention of an effect would only destroy the possibility of producing it. Confucius says about this line:

The superior man abides in his room. If his words are well spoken, he meets with assent at a distance of more than a thousand miles. How much more then from near by! If the superior man abides in his room and his words are not well spoken, he meets with contradiction at a distance of more than a thousand miles. How much more then from near by! Words go forth from one's own person and exert their influence on men. Deeds are born close at hand and become visible far away. Words and deeds are the hinge and bowspring of the superior man. As hinge and bowspring move, they bring honor or disgrace. Through words and deeds the superior man moves heaven and earth. Must one not, then, be cautious?

GOTD always a good service, mostly good software as well.. sometimes it is best to skip on the offering but there is little use in comments here unless they help the software developer and/or the down loaders and/or GOTD.

Trashing for trashing sake on developer isn't really of benefit to anyone.. Be appreciative for the opportunity to be a part of a fairly unique Beta-test/Marketing sample.. Otherwise leaving the negative comments out would make searching for info easier in cases such as an answer to the question I have below

That said - I wonder if I missed something in the activation steps.. Ran the activate program, got a success message so I ran through Setup.. Appeared to be fine.. program does as it is presented as doing.. When I look at the register screen under about, it appears that it still needs to be registered.. Does this mean that tomorrow the app will not work?

Thanks, Jim

I'm sorry, but is there a point to this application?

There's not one thing it does that can't be done faster and better in Windows Explorer. I doesn't even allow for easy movement of shortcuts between the All Users Start Menu and that of an individual user, something I do all the time because I use a lot of software that my wife and kids don't.

I appreciate that not every piece of software given away here will be useful to everyone, but this is useful to no one.

Agree with Shellca - checked the "About" / "Register" and it wants a user name and serial number. Any ideas? Executed the Activate program and came back with the normal "Successfully Activated", but still wound up with Register wanting more data. Nothing in the read me file.

How do you register this? No name or license number was given, yet when you check the "about" menu tab, and check "register" it opens a small name & license window. I haven't been able to find anything yet to indicate that the Giveaway was automatically registered and there was no name or license included in the readme

I think right-clicking the start button and clicking Explore is much easier that downloading, installing, and starting up this app to do the exact same thing as "Explore".

just do what the readme file says activate first then run set up to install it.
had no trouble activating and installing then runing it when I followed the read me file instructions.

it found two broken links already from some uninstalled software.
used windows uninstall software in the control panel area but it seems to not have uninstalled everything when that is used, which I did not know. I thought when you used the windows official uninstall it would take everything the software installed and remove it.
so, so far so good. or I could say it seems okay so far.

Installed and opened ok on both my xp and vista machines although I noticed for some reason it took a long time to open. If this program is able to help me detrash my start menu, I'll be pleased with it. Incidentally Cleanse Uninstaller has proven useful, I've ended up using it as much or more than I use Revo uninstaller.

@115 Shellca: If you'd read some of the comments, you would have seen at least two discussions about running "activate.exe" file before running "setup.exe" - no ohter registration is necessary.

Now to the rest of our devoted GOTD flock: Don't you realize the more attention you give Son of Fubar, the more you feed his sickness? Ignore the little fool until he has something productive to contribute. Hopefully, by that time, he will have learned a little more about English spelling and grammar.

(Too bad I'm posting so late in the day - few people will ever read this.)

Not happy with this one. Yes, it installed and activated without a problem, but then I ran it and it crashed. I opened it again and I only saw about 1 eighth of my start menu icons (I am not exaggerating if anything I am underestimating). Don't tell me to click that button that displays your personal icons and all the users' icons because I already did that several times. And dont tell me to reinstall because I already did. Can anyone offer me any help here? Thanks.

Yes, I know I can sort items with Windows Explorer, but sometimes I find that a little time-consuming (the start menu sometimes closes while I am dragging and item). If someone can help me fix this problem I might, just might, keep the program. I can't believe they would charge money for this.

A little about the description:
"Features:

Drag and drop arranging of start menu.
Group copy and paste of start menu icons.
Search start menu.
Validate and repair start menu entries.
Alphabetize start menu.
Easy creation of group folders.
Simple GUI.
Small size.
Fast loading of all menu items."

You can repair the start menu? Yeah right! Where? There is absolutely positively no button to do that. Sure, you can validate the entries, but it's not like the program's going to magically locate the programs the shortcuts lead to and fix them for you. Oh, no, they're going to make YOU do the work and find the missing program by browsing through files.

Oh yeah, and there's a button in the program to control the menu speed. What the heck is that for? This program is SUPPOSED to save you time. But just take a look at the dialog that button pops up, and what are you looking at? A DIALOG TO SLOW DOWN THE START MENU. In other words, it's asking you if you want the start menu to appear more slowly. Saving time? Yeah right.

Speaking about saving time, this whole thing is just being a waste of my time. Sure, GAOTD is a GREAT site, but sometimes they just pick the wrong programs. This one? Terrible. If you haven't gotton it yet, it's not worth the trouble. Not to mention spelling and grammor errors in the program. It's just going to give you a headache.

This one did no good for me, but thanks anyways GAOTD and whoever else tries to help me diagnose problems with this program (although this program has a 40% chance of me keeping it).

Comment by The Son of Fubar, #21 — August 21st, 2008 at 5:06 am:

People don’t realize what is all there in Windows. I use superior tools so I can tell you. A man is as good as his tools are and that makes me certainly superior.
Always judge a mans quality from his tools. Pay attention, it’s worthwile.
Todays gift is not new technology; I used years ago something like this and in those days I could do more because everything was better then.
For not so knowledged people as I am this seems to be a good thing, but it is all in Windows (I use superior and the best Vista Ultimate Superior which ranks always as the best). It is a shame to see commenters that do not know any of these things, which are really basic for someone like me. Learn how to use your pc and get the tools I have or you will never be superior as I am. You need the tools I have. It is stupid to do not so.
Deep in the registry, todays gift did something, that I am very much worried about. I am not going further into that because most people wouldn’t understand.
The developpers should leave the registry allone, this is serious business as most people will surely not understand (and they have no superior tools either). If you can handle Windows the right way you can do without this tool, but for all those people that are nor so superior as I am, this might be very welcome.

What most of you have NOT acknowledged is how BAD explorer is. In fact its pathetic and I am surprised MS have built it to such a sub standard. Actually won't go any further with MS. In Explorer you do not see the icons and cannot move them around as you do files. This is a little better but not brilliant, I have .exe files that don't show so 6 out of 10 for this software, it lets it down which is a shame. Best to look at another file manager that allows you to see all the icons and move them between panes as well as files.

Quite useless software for me, though others may find it helpful.

Well done all the posters (#59 & #73) who commented on Son of Fubar (#21) and his inability to use the language correctly. It's a shame because his message was correct, though clumsily put. Despite Fubar's extensive knowledge of the inner workings of his PC, he/she has extraordinarily limited social intelligence. This should not be a forum for name calling or belittling other people, which Fubar does with regular monotony. A recent example was his description of others as "clueless". That's what #21 was attempting to point out.

#90 - I think you may have missed the point
#98 - those sayings were possibly misdirected.

Now - if I've missed the point, and Fubar's son has inherited the "superior tool" genes of his father, I retract my comment.

The next release on GOTD from this company will be called Address Bar!

It will be a 42MB download and is essentially a basic text editor (think notepad) that allows you to type in a url, then click the submit button so that it can transfer the url to your web browser of choice.

It claims to work with all current browsers and Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003 Server/Vista, but will only work with Netscape 1.0 when using Microsoft Bob.

a suggestion to Zardes Software. Please consider combining your product's features with another, and THEN you'd have a terrific product. STARTCOP is a utility I've had for decades, when PCmag used to offer freeware. Its genius is to allow the GROUPING of Autostarting programs!

With that, it allows ONLY those programs relevant to my computer's task to AutoStart at boot. So, web browsing is requires specific programs, only. Writing another group, Drawing another,.... This way, only those programs are using system resources.

Maybe that's a carryover from early computer days, but its a feature I've seldom seen used in other utilities. Yours SHOULD have this, to make it the true "organizer" it could be. Otherwise, I really could care less about organizing the menu items. Thanks, anyway. Please offer it on GOTD should you incorporate my suggestion, so we can properly try it out here :-)

Ohhhh...StartCop3 is available for $10, still, from PCmag online.

Well Well Well ! #21 The Son of Fubar.

I Guess you needed some affection today. In psychology it is known that a person who thinks of himself as being Superior are usually very insecure and need to put others down to feel worthy.

On another note, here is food for your "Superior" thoughts :

-Think much, say little, write less. (French Proverb)

-There is nothing noble in being superior to some other person,
the true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.

-People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones

-A fool says what he knows, and a wise man knows what he says.

-A bad workman never finds a good tool. (French Proverb)

-A fool who knows he is a fool has a little intelligence, but a fool that thinks he is intelligent is really a fool.

-No one is poor but he who thinks himself so.

-It's the empty can that makes the most noise

And last but not least:

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool that to speak and remove all doubt.

BTW: I downloaded, I love trying different programs. Works OK for me.
Thanks ZARDS Software & GAOTD. Keep on giving!!!

Dowhloaded, activated, installed, and tested with no problems on XP Pro, sp3. Faster with some Start menu organizing. You can Sort by Name in Explorer, so that is a duplicated function. But the fact is that all possible Start menu organizing functions found in Windows must be the baseline of this handy application, so I have no problem with that. And I say handy because it has a clean, user-friendly display and allows for a faster, easier of using the functions. For promoting this product, however, it does need a bell & whistle that really attracts people...some use that really grabs us to purchase. Without that, many will consider this a waste of money. And if Zards added a really strong enhancement, they will surely attract more buyers. Boost it to the quality of Cleanse Uninstaller, and you'll have a real winner. Ever since pc moving my apps from an old pc to my new machine, I lost my start menu contents. The folders are there, but the rest has to be rebuilt...and there's alot. The moving company told me I'd just have to do this manually, and I do this as I use the various apps. Plus I reinstalled Windows Accessories, so that's there, but the rest is just overwhelming. I have better things to do, like write comments on GOTD. So when I saw this giveaway I was hoping it would do the job, but no luck. Now that capability would make this really attractive to some buyers...ME. Maybe someone out there has a suggestion for Start Menu construction or reconstruction. Either way, I give this a thumps up for being clean, functional, & a pretty handy little tool. I love time-savers! And I'm not proofing this, so excuse any typos.

I get the feeling that these developers make programs with no intention of charging money for it, come across GAOTD, and decide "if we pretend to charge money for this program we'll get free advertising for a day!"

The program does do what it claims to, and does it well; I'll give it that much. But as stated before, all this can be achieved through Windows Explorer.
