I have Windows vista build 6001 sp1 the program would not run would crash before startup, says it needs directx9c as requirements so tried installing that, don't know why I should need to as it's supposed to work with vista anyway that made no difference so I uninstalled it!

I downloaded/installed it on my XP SP2 desktop with no problem. I then proceeded to clean off some unnecessary icons so that my family could more easily locate important business web site icons that Desktop 3D has now made obscure-appearing. I got the icons off, but when trying to refresh desktop to rearrange the remaining ones, nothing happened. I decided to switch back to my previous, normally-used desktop. Desktop 3D is interesting, but if it's going to cause problems, I don't need it.

To all those having problems restoring their desktops.

Create a system restore point prior to installation, or use a sandbox program.

@%73, you can download it, install it, choose not to run it. Then go to its program folder, find the folder "data", open that folder, and there you will find an icon folder. The icons are in png format, and you can easily copy the icons to use separately from the program.

I must admit that I installed it out of curiosity, and it installed without problem on my xp desktop. Since it installed without problem, I probably will just leave it on my machine, although I don't know how long it might be before I actually run it because I like my weather watcher desktop that shows me the current weather and what's going on with storms etc, all the time.

Incidentally, none of my antivirus or antimalware real-time guards gave me any kind of alert on installing the program either, which further confirms the results of virus scans earlier...nothing at all detected!

When I see even more comments of this causing system crashes, etc, and the huge number of "thumbs down" ratings, I think that although I did download this, that I will pass on installing it.

If someone wants something REALLY cool and funny, unusual and free, check this out!

http://www.freewarefiles.com/Recycle-Bin-Laden_program_12714.html

This program replaces the traditional Recycle Bin. Can be restored to original.New version include sound for empty recycle bin event.

This left me laughing every time I've emptied my recycle bin since I installed it earlier this evening. Cool sound effects too!

The "Uninstall" feature is one of the best... it works fine. The program gives me errors, closing (send error to microsoft...), turs the "ONE CLICK" on for icons and makes my screen flicker. Thanks anyway GOTD...

To all you whiners, this is a good 5 Star download.
I've tried it on all web links and Yahoo, Google and others.
It works as stated, can change all sizes and skins.
I've also just visited their site and find that all
links load and work flawlessly.
This is a keeper for me.

@ #23: erm... Screensavers are now unnecessary? Maybe you should tell Apple: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88343 or this guy's poor Dell: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Dell-1905fp-image-persistence.jpg

Seriously, though it's somewhat off-topic for this giveaway, screen savers still have a use in this day and age. Questions regarding them are perfectly valid.

@ #8: Yes, I'd still use a screensaver. Especially since you can have such huge non-animated icons on the desktop... Those would kind of blow to have semi-permanently persisting on your screen. See what "normal" icons do on that Wikipedia link above... ;)

Not to sure about this one. Not because of the "404 Cant be found" reports. But just the program overall. It looks "OK" but nothing to spectacular. I might have given it a chance if I could adjust the size of the icons. After reading about the program I did not see tat as being an option. I'm not 90 and my eye sight is not bad yet. I really don't need icons the size of my hand on my desktop.

Not to mention if my friends seen it. They would think I was playing around on a modded Leap Frog computer with how big and childish those icons look.

Who in their right mind would pay $20 for 100+ Desktop icons? Plus it sounds like it would make the desktop run even slower than ever with background images having relatively huge file sizes.

Okay, downloaded it, seemed decent, not something I would use, but other people might, but then I wanted to see what other animated desktops and such they had...the page they gave in the menus went to a 404 Error page and I can't seem to find where to get more icons that look as good as those from them...in short, I wouldn't get it. It was using 8% of my cpu while running, so low CPU footprint my foot..

I still stand by my comment on #5. However I did not realize how much CPU usage this takes (40%). I am running an AMD 3000+ single core.

I also do some home digital video work that requires every bit of CPU power I can get from this.

Simple solution. Need CPU power, right click icon for program by clock and choose exit. You have your power back.Otherwise you can have fun with it if this is your type of program.

As far as many of the comments above, This site gives me the opportunity to download programs free of charge with a 24hr window.

If I do not need this type of program I do not download. i do not whine or complain, I just think, we will see what tomorrow has to bring.
I am thankful on some of the programs I did not waste my money buying them and taking a loss.

This is a wonderful site and should be appreciated more. After all the only thing that it costing people is a little time to try a program. That is what you would be doing anyway if you actually bought it outright.

It's your decision download or not.

Hey, in the ad to the right for More Titles by ArcticLine Software, we are shown "Everyday Folder Icons for Vista"
60+ amazing professional Vista folder icons. The best choice anywhere on the Web. Use them to customize your folders. Each icon is designed to look impeccable in all sizes. A must-have!

How wonderful. Have the teddy bear for the kids games, followed by a woman's boobs folder. Guess p o r n need to be better organized as well. (Guess can figure out what the programmers are doing instead of fixing web links? ;)

I think I'll pass on today's offering, thank you

blah blah blah I prefer a clean desktop and don't use icons or settings or shortcuts and blah blah blah blah and XYZ does a much better job blah blah blah ... ??

Well how wonderful for you... WE DO NOT CARE.

Either download and test THEN post a comment... OR JUST GO AWAY PLEASE. Obviously this kind of software is a 'just for fun' thing - it's not going to do anything for you other than possibly relieve a little boredom (and make those really fast computers run at a much more leisurely pace)... and yes - skins and desktop replacements are all CPU/RAM hogs. We get that. SO DON'T DOWNLOAD THEM.

I use the folder marker software that was offered here a few weeks ago and it works great, but I still can't figure out the Direct3D error message so I uninstalled it. I think it may be an inadequate video card, this isn't a gaming PC. I might try re-downloading it to a different PC running XP Home edition later on today because I think my daughter will like this software...

For those that don't like the themes given here and if you like a SciFi theme style instead, check out Alienware Theme Manager. They have 4 different Alien skin styles for XP and 1 for Vista. I've been using their DarkStar theme with the Window Media Player also DarkStar skin for a year with no problem.

Alienware is also known for building good custom computers for gaming.

Installed OK. Did'nt run well on my underpowered XP system.Ugly blocky animations.Registration screen never came up. Program needs a LOT more refinement, and even then, would be of little practical use. Might be OK on a kids computer, but I suspect most youngun's have already customized their desktops.Even if it had run properly, the lack of drop-and-drag would have been a dealbreaker for me. On the plus side, uninstall seems to have been clean, with my desktop back to it's pre-install state.
BTW,as I understand it, GOTD is both an advertising forum and a test lab for software developers.ooooh,it free does'nt give them useful feedback, constructive criticism does. And, I've benefited greatly from the suggested alternatives to the GOTD offerings. Keep 'em coming!

The offered software today is not my cup of tea so I won't be downloading it or rating it. Instead I want to direct your attention to the first listing under More Titles by ArcticLine Software at the top of this page.

Everyday folder icons for vista:
First, I imagine this is good for the person who wants to easily catagorize their pron collection. Because "My Pron" as a folder name just isn't enough for the ultra-visual.

Second, I can identify use for most of the folders. Teddy bear for a baby or small girl, boobs for the aformentioned pron, and family for family files. But what about the tigerboot? Is that to store all of my tigerboot files? Alsso I think it is going to eat the teddy bear.

-Tigerboot

Good for a change, but in the long run I want a clean system.

I like the visual twists and have tried over the years Aston, Window Blinds, StyleXP, nLite style and others. But I am fed up with the trash left behind when uninstalling and the use of resources. So after all I like a clean system.

This one needs a pretty recent graphics card which does the alpha blend rendering. If the CPU has to do it it certainly slows down the PC.

Instead of this you might want to try Vista Aero or MyColor from Stardock.

What advantages are there, in using this, besides just appearance (if you like its looks)

Those of you who said or implied that there might be a virus in this, did you scan it after downloading it? I downloaded it (although not yet sure if I will install it after reading of it allegedly causing some ppl's systems to crash) and it scanned clean with both NOD32 and Spybot S&D. Seems to me that if any GAOTD is infected with something, scan results should be posted so everybody knows what was found.
