If you have XP, and you wish to have a 'Snap' program, then grab this, because Snap 8 does not work on XP

I highly recommend this program for anyone with lots of memory in their PC. I'm still using 32-bit Vista with 3.2 GB of available memory, but since Vista and browsers and antivirus programs continue to grow I no longer can afford all the space this one takes. I miss having it ready when I need it!

Installed with win 8.1 64 bit...easy install...I JUST want this for the occasional screen capture (usually just a portion of the screen) and the ability to add text, arrows, etc. I do not want this running all the time...how do I CLOSE it? I have the option set to not start with windows but I do not want to reboot just to close it every time I use it...Thanks for any help...

Well I went through the usual hoopla, downloaded, acquired the license key and installed. I find that I do not have the pop out bars on the left and right edges of my screen, just the Image bar at the top. In other words the main enhancements that induced me to try this software are missing. My Faststone capture with a tiny footprint will do all that this is trying to do on my computer.

I've had it installed for about 10 minutes on my Win7 machine. HOW do you turn the thing OFF? I don't want it running all the time. AND, no help file? It says: "You can obtain further information and help by either consulting the help file or . . ." But I cannot find a help file. Odd.

Help file is in configure...(the gear)...I have the SAME question...still waiting for my Q to pass "inspection"

You should see in the upper right corner of your screen a blue tab, if you hover your mouse near the tab in the upper right corner, more icons will appear. The icon that looks like a cog/wheel has the link for the Help file. It appears that this program's default is to always be on and ready for use. It can be easily ended using Window Task Manager.

Not only odd, but maddening! I also have Windows 7, and could NOT find a way to stop it from recording. (The Ashampoo "tip" is to use your Pause Button -- but this keyboard doesn't have a pause button!)

I finally tried shutting down the whole laptop. Hope that did it. Probably the last time I ever use Ashampoo. It's done some serious damage to my PC's in the past.

you can configured it in
configure > configuration > general
uncheck the Start with Windows

and if u want to shut the program go to the system tray right click the "Ashampoo snap7" icon and click "Exit Application"

Reply   |   Comment by Vermeilia  –  9 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

right click taskbar icon, choose configure. In pop up window choose "more options" and there in "general" you can disable start with windows
I counted 3 options to get to help
right click taskbar icon choose "open help"
in the window where you clicked "more options" click help followed by open help
in the desktop bar on top of your screen click the gear icon which also opens that pop up window and..... well you should get it by now

A known issue! Install WinPatrol Free and it will notify you when Snap (or any other program for that matter) writes itself to starting up every time you fire up your PC, so you can say no to that.

You don't need to publish this if you'd prefer not to.. . just thought I should tell you that somehow on my cell phone, *yesterday's* giveaway is all that I can get to show up for today. I've tried refreshing and everything else I can think of, and nothing changes.

(Update: now it's working right... took a couple hours.)

Installed fine on win 7, but now all I get is a small help screen (which can be unchecked to not appear again), and no more. And even if I uncheck the box it reappears. Nothing there.... Do I need to actually open it up some other way?? just wondering why. Even went to the folder and that desktop icon seems to be going to the right application. Sigh.

I went through the exact same thing that you did. Look for a VERY thin blue line along the edge of the screen (probably top right). When you hover over it the Snap7 toolbar will appear. Hope that helps!

Installed easily on my win8.1 laptop. No issues...just had to provide an email addy to get the registration key, so I used '33mail.com'. (Thanks 'lofty')

For basic screenshot capture, I just use the PrintScreen button on my keyboard, open IrfanView (freeware) from my taskbar, click the Paste icon at the top, do all the editing I want to do, then save the image. I don't need a separate program for this.

Many functions, but I rather have things like shadow beneath recorded screenshots, outline on texts, 3d/shadow under objects turned off by default. In the outputfolder a folder snapdoc is created, clicking on the .snapdoc file opens the coupled screenshot again for further editing. Getting a good result of a website in scrolling window could take a few efforts, freestyle did work best for me because you can crop the scrollbar out of the picture. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/snap7/Result%20freestylewithshadowonwhite.jpg You can find some of the settings by rightclicking on the notification icon, "configure" and "configuration..Capture".
If you get it right you can get nice results, ready for publication in e.g. manuals.
It's a keeper.

I'm getting an error when installing on 8.1:
An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory: MoveFile failed; code 183. Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

I had exactly the same error on a Windows 8.1 machine. It could not copy/rename the file: readme_en_us.htm, code 183. Un-installed and re-installed with Admin rights and still the same. And browsing afterwards in the program directory, this file is missing.

Okay, I requested the download link & it was sent without any problem, but I'm unable to get a registration key. I don't have an Ashampoo account, but it told me what to do if I didn't have one, yet still having trouble. I've tried going through the process 4 times already, about to throw in the towel, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Steve

I'm kind of with you, Susie. I don't much see the point of this. I'm not a gamer, and even if I was, I wouldn't understand why I needed this. Seriously, what would someone like me use this for? I really want to know. It's not a trick question.

Google maps for example. There is no longer a print function. Use this to capture the area you want and print a copy to take with you or annotate it and e-mail it to someone. Fill in an online form, (eg tax return) capture it, save for future reference. It's like windows snip it, but so muchbetter

Reply   |   Comment by lofty  –  9 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+9)

@lofty, google map has a big print sign (just checked). For the tax return i use a virtual printer pdf creator (turn any page into pdf file or jpg file http://www.pdfforge.org/pdfcreator If you afterwards want 1 file instead of multiple seperate pdf files use pdf architect or, my favorite pdf split and merge http://www.pdfsam.org/ pluimpje

"Since I don't understand most of what I just read, I guess I don't need this software."
"I'm kind of with you, Susie. I don't much see the point of this."

Capturing a still image of something on your display is good for later sharing, &/or when you want to document something. If you're shopping online you can take a snapshot of an offer or maybe published return policy in case of later problems, &/or take a shot of the completed order for your records in case you never get an invoice emailed to you [surprisingly often they don't show up].

Both still & video capture are good for tutorials or how-to projects, while video capture itself is used by some people to record video playing on their PC, whether something like Skype, or a movie or TV program streaming online that you can't save otherwise.

I prefer Snap because it lets you use whatever codec you want to install, rather than limit you to whatever codec comes with the app, like most others. Many codecs are too slow, either because the files are so big you can't write them to disk fast enough, or because they're just too inefficient.

And while I'm not a gamer, so I can't say how well Snap works, or doesn't in this respect, it's pretty popular to record video of your gameplay to later share &/or post online.

"Fill in an online form, (eg tax return) capture it, save for future reference."

Screen capture always works, but often you can print to PDF, which has the advantage of saving text as text that you can copy & paste later on.

First of all, I got no problem giving my real email to Ashampoo.
I am not bothered by their email notifying me of products.
If you don't want to read, simply do a few clicks and mass delete.
I have used Ashampoo Snap 7 for some time before this giveaway in GOTD today.
The version I have is 7-0-11.
I will only comment on the video capture aspect here.
You can capture video. You can select any rectangular region.
During playback, the frame will flash/blink between blue and yellow, to let you know the video capture is ongoing.
Press Pause key to stop; or you can define a Stop hotkey separately.
It will playback after end of capture. You can then choose to save the video or delete it.
In the configuration, you can choose to stop auto update notification.
You can choose a Light skin to replace the Dark skin for the toolbar.
I think by default it captures screen video in WMV.
You can specify your chosen folder to send the video capture to; and the program will remember this.
You can define a prefix to add in front of each captured filename, for easy identification later.
You can save all your settings by exporting them. It is saved in an ini file.
You can choose the position of the toolbar that is hidden from view. Top / Bottom / Left / Right.
A thin band is seen at the edge of the screen. When you mouse over it, the band expands into a toolbar with icons.
The video playback quality is good with loud and clear audio that is in synch.
Don't worry about the default WMV format.
You can easily convert it if you need to, using other video converters.
Ashampoo Snap 7 is very good.

"Don't worry about the default WMV format.

Or you can just use a better codec to begin with, which is what makes Snap IMHO worthwhile. Re-encoding [converting] always loses some quality, so if you can avoid it, why not?

There are a couple of codecs using the x264 encoder coupled with VFW, which while older tech, can work surprisingly well. That way you might capture 1080p video, & with the smaller files, be able to write them to disk without having to have a faster SSD or RAID setup. Or if you're planning on editing afterward, use a more lossless format like mjpeg, or something else that saves every frame complete like DV.

Thanks, mike. Got it. Used a SourceForge x264VFW codec.
Needed to use trial + error to get the correct setting for x264VFW.
Zero latency enabled. VirtualDub hack enabled.
Output must be VFW, cannot be File.
Used that in Ashampoo Snap7 screen video capture. Output has good image quality and audio (PCM stereo) and file was very small size. The video codec of output was detected as AVC.

Installed win 10 no probs. Used my existing ashampoo account to get instant activation key. To anyone worried about advertising mails suggest you use a 33mail.com address to register. I've been using Fastone capture as it's easy to use, but to be honest this knocks that out of the water. Besides capturing I can see me using this edit my ebay pictures. Open the image, capture it then use the editing features of this program which are very good and extremely easy to use. For only the second ever time on 'giveaway' I'm going to checkout the paid upgrade (aerosol ready for the moths when I open my wallet)

WORTH THE CROWBAR TO THE WALLET ! ! ! !

I would ABSOLUTELY check out the upgrade to ver. 8 ! I spent the morning reviewing the difference and the difference is quite a lot.
https://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pde/1224/multimedia-software/snap-8
but I'll list highlights here for the lazy. This is what ver 8 does that ver 7 DOESN'T -
webcam during video captures (picture in picture) with size and position adjustment and microphone use.
New video capture control bar and video time counter
video pause and continue control
Timed video capturing (time lapse)
OCR capability- pulls text from images (English, French, German, Spanish, Turkish, and Russian)
hot key & multiple monitor support
Support for different cursor styles
Insert locally saved images into screenshots
Copy objects between screenshots or to system clipboard
Exit edit mode even with multiple open projects
object scaling (vectoring?)during size adjustments
Create collages from multiple screenshots
auto size adjust before sending

If your intent is to make tutorials and such, Ver8 is really king.
And for those who are bothering to read this, well there's a special sale bundle this week (6 days left) snap 8, slideshow studio HD 3 and photo optimizer 6. all three for $12.99 ! Snap 8 retails at $39.99, so yeah... either go here https://shop.ashampoo.com/10/purl-onlineshop?cart=161518&coupon=9MN-266-E9X&x-source=dow&x-mid=21
or click on their home screen (tiny, tiny house icon far upper left corner) and click deal of week on right side of page.

imo one of the better screen capture apps. had it from previous giveaway and got a nice discount for the new 8 which I just bought.

avoid "Spam"? After registration log in to your account, go to settings and with two clicks you are free of their news letters. This should however be done after each ashampoo install. I think their software is worth that "trouble"

Spam? I see this complaint each time one of their softwares is offered, but IMO it is a "non-event." I have at least 5 of their programs installed on my computer, and i hardly get any emails from this company. So IMO getting "spam" from this company is "much adou about nothing."

This is version 7 and it's not the latest but still good enough for most aside video game capture with DirectX which will crash either the game or Snap 7.

On Windows 10, when using this version you do need to update it with their official patch otherwise you may encounter problems depending on your system specs.

As I already have Snap 8, I won't download today.
