I installed this program but never really used it. It loaded an unwanted toolbar into IE and even though I disabled the toolbar it kept coming back to haunt me. Then I noticed I started getting unwanted pop up ads in the lower right hand corner of the IE window. That was enough for me. I uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller. I did not expect all the additional shrapnel. No more problems after the uninstall.

They Lie! I installed "Ashamoo Snap 4" few days ago I just got a pop up says Free trial expired! This stuff is not free! To mention all the time it takes to install and Now I got tons of garbage to remove form my computer! Not to mention the fact that it would take a ton more time to try to make it really free if it is available. I have lots of web sites that I link to GOTD Now I have to remove all those links I don't want my customers to experience this grief

There is no opting out of the Spam. I'm not sure why some are saying that. You give them your email address to register and they are going to use it. And use it a LOT!

Sure, there are ways to deal with Spam, such as filtering it out, but that's not the point. For me, the product has to be awfully special to justify overly aggressive marketing practices.

It would behoove AShampoo to realize that and do things differently.

Nice utility, but the feature that disables AutoRun at startup, news alerts and the Splash Screen are too hard to find. It needs to be moved to the top level navigation. Users are uninstalling because they believe they can't change, or find these settings.

To find the settings click on the tray icon - choose "Configure" - in the popup window click "Configuration" located in the small, easily overlooked top menu - the dropdown list:
1. "Service-Channel" disables news
2. "General" opens the "Settings/General" window. There you can disable startup + other useful stuff - To disable auto startup, uncheck the first top left checkbox titled "Start With Windows" located in the Application area, right next to that is the checkbox for the Splash Screen

Hi Rob#91, just checked it for You. My "SnapShot" is a little free program from Bluefive Software Site (http://bluefive.pair.com/), hope it helps:) There might be other Software called the same (popular name it seems) - but I use that very one. Hope I'm allowed this post-offer entry:)

I don't like Ashampoo's way of doing business. They will send daily email spam to you and the products install toolbars and hijack your start page. Stay far far away from this product. And for the people that say stop whining about spam, remember that you were once a noob too. People need to be warned about it before, not after making their decision to install this software.

It's been a long time since I've posted at GAOTD, but I had to tell you about ClipCache Pro, which I've been using for a couple of years to do two things: to capture and paste screen shots and to paste text in multiple places, mainly when I'm adding data to my genealogy program. It includes the portable version for no extra charge. CCPro is one of those programs I can't do without. I liked it so much that I also bought LinkStash from the same company for organizing my bookmarks.

Here's a brief description of ClipCache Pro, but it does so much more:

"ClipCache Pro is an easy to use and powerful clipboard extender and a whole lot more! It monitors clipboard activity and saves everything you copy. You never need worry about overwriting the Windows Clipboard again. It cleans text clips in many useful ways, for example removing the annoying ">>>>" marks from email text or converting the clipboard to pure text. It's one of the only clipboard extenders that offer these three essentials: a tree outline view, global search and the ability to record the source of your clips, making it ideal for researchers of all kinds. ClipCache is also portable so take your clips with you on a USB flash drive. A single-user license can be used on both the portable and the installer version - no need for an extra license."

I tried it and it not only was difficult to use, busy, and installed to come up right away, ignored a custom installation item about including toolbar that I unchecked, but the absolute worst thing was that that toolbar was "Conduit" added to my browsers and there was no comment that mentioned that toolbar by name until #64 much too late.

I will be staying clear of both Ashampoo and giveawayoftheday.

I'm confused as to why a software company would offer outdated (buggy) software to thousands of possible new customers. Apparently, Ashampoo doesn't value new customers. Version 4 is being offered for download; version 5 is available on Ashampoo's website.

In regards to the software itself, the graphical user interface is dated and obtrusive. I have been using Techsmith SnagIt for years and prefer their simple, graphical user interface and separate image editor. Further, Techsmith only contacts me by email if a software update is available (this option is turned OFF by default). I do not receive email offers about additional Techsmith products. I think I have received two email messages from Techsmith in two years.

A company that will install hidden software or make unapproved software changes (via toolbar installation, confusing installation langauge/options, etc.), to a user's personal computer is simply crossing the line in my opinion. Browser "hijacking" seems to be Ashampoo's preferred method.

Pros: It's Free

Cons: Outdated software (new version available), hidden software installation (browser hijacking), email contact by Ashampoo to the point of ad nauseum.

Summary

I don't think the free price is worth all the trouble since sufficient free alternatives exist. Most of the available alternatives are relatively "painless" compared to this product. Apparently, Ashampoo does not value new customers; if they did, they would eliminate the browser hijacking mechanism, minimize their spamming/repeated email offerings (all for the same product), and provide the NEWEST version to prospective customers.

If you don't have a program like this or if you're not happy with the one you have, try this.

Thank you Ashampoo and GOTD. Even though I'm not downloading this one, I can still give a little advice.

I hope I get some answer on this question. I have many (7-9) photo editing programs that I use on different computers I have a very difficult time understanding and using Ashampo Photo Commander. It seems "non standard" anyone having a problem using Photo Commander.

To GOTD - thanks for the work you put into providing us this varied software to try.

To those who offer first hand experience with the software offered - thanks for your many insights and shared knowledge of other similar programs.

To those of you who whine and moan about your 'search engine being hijacked' or getting spam email from the software vendor - have you considered that your whining comments here are far more annoying to the rest of the readers than any email you get from places like Ashampoo? You are simply admitting that you are too lazy to unsubscribe or too ignorant to read the installation instructions to avoid unwanted consequences. So give it a rest - especially when you are duplicating other whiners!

I tried this despite my fears over intrusive unwanted additional software installations on my Windows XP machine. Fortunately, my fears were unfounded and no additional software or toolbars or browser settings were corrupted.

The software failed my expectations though. It did well to initialize and help point out to me how to start and pause/end/edit my screen capture videos but it failed to prevent choppy response time of my mouse cursor movement even when capturing something as basic as a nearly full screen window of a text editor. I had to use an enlarged window-mode to capture the whole text editor interface because it seemed to have failed to target it in full-screen mode.

Upon stopping the capture, I entered Edit Mode and was given helpful instructions on three toolbars to use. Only one toolbar was visible and would not auto-hide. The others failed to display at all and so editing wasn't even possible. This may be due to my dual displays but it wasn't worth pursuing if I have to disable my second monitor to use it. Tried reinstalling with no luck either. I won't be keeping this software.

"Again and again it’s the same rhetoric. I really get tired of the whining leeches here."

Gee Steve ... Who's doing the whining now. Mankind would have died out long ago if all humans had the same view about everything. Your views are valid however, so are the views of others. When you see this, you will most probably lower your blood pressure instantly. Perhaps this isn't the place for you?

I've just now downloaded and installed Ashampoo Snapshot 4 from GOTD with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and it took me approximately 4 minutes in total, including receiving the activation key. Not sure why people are experiencing problems. I've been using Ashampoo products for well over a year now and have never encountered a problem. In fact, I rate Ashampoo as the most ethical and supportive software provider of all that I've dealt with over the past 20 years. Sure, they aggressively try and sell their products but who doesn't? I probably have and use every piece of software they have available now that I've installed Snapshot 4. And every product has lived up to their claims. I recommend them to anyone.

You can opt out of emails after you receive your registration key.
I've used and purchased many of Ashampoo's products. I've purchased today's giveaway and I've purchased Snap 5 as well. I think it's a fine product. You don't have to have it as a startup item - you can turn off this feature. I've used many screen capture softwares and this is the brand that I've settled on as my brand of choice. It does everything I need and I've used it to capture many screenshots for presentations and classes. Like any software or software company you will like it or hate it, but download and use it a bit before you complain about it. Hey - it's free today!

Several folks here (Giovanni et. al. ) highly recommend CamStudio for audio-video capture, as a freeware alternative to Snap4, and I have tried it and can readily record interactions with the screen, but, for the life of me, on my netbook, it will not record or play back audio...

Installed with no issues - did opt out of the search bar etc. though.

I was more interested in the video capture aspect of the program, mainly for recording full screen game footage. It doesn't do that as well as the likes of fraps or bandicam, and certainly isn't as easy to use in my opinion. Rather than specifying an area to record, I would have preferred to pick a window or application.

That said, if I wanted to record a lecture, powerpoint presentation or how to use a certain windows program I think this software really shines.

Ashampoo4 does what it sets out to do very well in my opinion; it's just not really what I was looking for.

Ashampoo has many (most) great programs! (Strange name .. I'd like to know the story behind that!) Many of their apps are my top favorite. Some good free ones to! They are very fair on prices too. So trust them!
Do they spam? I wish a little less as I get so that I just ignore many of their emails and unwelcome pop-ups. I've used snap in the past and it is like an 18 wheeler (heavy duty!) But to "go to the grocery store??? Hope some like my analogy. I like Gadwin and one other that Ashraf (Dottech.org) recommends. So I MIGHT do a flyover. (Hard to do for this software junky!

I paid to upgraded from Snap4 to Snap5 last October, and consider it money well spent. The screen and website captures work fine in both versions. I had problems with sound syncronisation when capturing video with Snap5. Ashampoo recomended installing the free "K-Lite Codec Package" to resolve the issue - and it did indeed then work fine. I would imagine this would also work for the video issues in Snap4.

I have left it in the startup as it is convenient to always have it available - I am not aware that this has caused me any problems.

Hi, I have been using simple "SnapShot" for years and years.. and that little black camera is my daily companion:)

Some might laugh, some pity (as there is soooo many MORE sophisticated tools of that nature on the market..)
Keep trying them all, keeping some, using only Snapshot. Works for me!

Want to know about a different almost daily "companion"?
E-mails from Ashampoo, ha ha. They can easily be blocked, or I could unsubscribe (I guess), I'm just too lazy.. From time to time something grabs my attention, that's all. I don't believe these e-mails generate more unwanted offers from elsewhere (than Ashampoo itself), but one careful sniff - and that "game" is over.

Thanks GAOTD anyway, I will pass, tried Snap 5 and.. guess what I'm using instead:) - even taking snaps of various stages of games, habit! If Anyone is remotely interested in SnapShot - delay time before capture works well when on 4sec:)

There is no need to have the toolbar or search engine installed. At the initial install DO NOT install with the "Express Install" option. Use the Custom alternative and do not tick any of the options there.

The only trouble I have found is that the obtaining of the activation key is clumsy because the windows are in Russian and so need to be translated. I managed, though with a bit of patience!

XP SP3

CONDUIT!
That alone should stop anyone from installing this, even if it can be deselected on install (though you must do a "Custom" install).

Registered & received license code.
(It did NOT like various throw-away email addresses. Makes sense considering I have received prolific amounts of SPAM from earlier Ashampoo products.)

Install seemed to go OK.
But no matter what I tried, it did not like the license key, saying it was invalid, the key "has already been activated"?

I find the program layout highly confusing & unconventional.

Can't seem to get the scrolling window capture modes to capture scrolling windows.

Fail, in my book.

Uninstall.

I used Snap 4 for a while and it worked quite well. The main reason I got it was to record live video streams and it does so just fine. I decided to upgrade to Snap 5 when it became available (at a heavily discounted price), but it only has a few additional features. If you're new to Ashampoo software here's a summary of how they play the game:
1. They offer older full versions (or slightly cut down free versions) in exchange for an email address. Then they offer you upgrades to new or full versions for $$.
2. When installing you should always select "custom" install so you can opt-out of the toolbar, homepage and search engine changes.
3. After the program is installed go into the Configuration/Service Channel settings and uncheck the options for email notifications.

This is their standard marketing process, and if you can deal with it the software is quite good.
