I think the main difference in 201 edition v 2014 or 2015 version is that you can’t specify folders or files to backup in the 2021 edition which will only backup a drive letter or partition.
A shampoo 2014 couldn’t backup to external drives although it claimed it could in the specification.

Limited functions compared to their Pro 15. Wish I had looked closer before downloading.

Robert Dolph, What functions are in Pro 15 and not in 2021 ? I gave it a quick look, most difference appeared to be in the user interface and stability. What did you find ?

15 also has the ability to backup to "cloud" storage. 15 can also backup file & folders, 2021 can restore files & folders after full disk backup. Not sure if 2021 can backup files & folders, or has to backup whole disks.

caused my pc to run at snails pace, programs took forever to load, etc, checked task manager, backup-ab and backup-something else installed by this program cause the disc to be at 100% usage. Uninstalled, back to normal.

FWIW I strongly suggest trying the bootable USB stick you can create with Ashampoo Backup 2021 to make sure it works with all of your devices -- that's where an awful lot of backup apps fail, and if it won't work, you certainly need to know that before you actually need it.

J asked: "Does the program save backups (especially images) into a common format?"

I'm sure there are others, but out of the two I recommend, Macrium Reflect & Paragon [both offer free versions], Paragon lets you save your backup images as .vhd files, which are mountable in Win10.

The version available on the Ashampoo website says it creates a bootable cd or usb stick to access backups in case the system is crashed. Does this version do this as well?

Rrman56, Yes.... in the "Rescue System" option from the menu. USB and CD

What happens when my computer crashes and i need to restore my data after a complete reinstall.
Will I have to purchase the software to restore (as it will no longer be free on GAOTD) or can I restore from a free version?

Reply   |   Comment by MS  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+9)

MS, You can reinstall the program and use the license you received. I've done this with many different Ashampoo programs. You can also use their "Ashampoo Connect" app to download and reinstall it as well.

I don't think any of these backup programs are designed with "simplicity in mind". I have tried a few, and all I just want to do simple a back up of my D drive partition on my computer, with all my photos and other files. No matter what I do, they all want to do a full hard drive backup. The worst part is, the backup is all in one compressed file, which you cannot restore any singe file. Many years ago I enjoyed using the backup doggle called Clickfree Transformer. But that ended with Windows 7..

Daniel Pieniak,
Try the FreeFileSync or the SyncToy for your purposes. Both are free.

Reply   |   Comment by monolake  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Daniel Pieniak, Check the manual for 2021. It appears you can backup a single partition (if you wish), and restore individual files and folders from the backup it created.

Daniel Pieniak, try Free File Sync. I use it to back up certain folders to a SSD hard drive. No compression. I choose to mirror my folders to the hard drive. Simple, free and easy in One click

Does anyone know what is the difference between Ashampoo Backup 2021 and Ashampoo Backup 15? The latter is more expensive, but seems to do the same thing? This 2021 is somehow a cutdown version, but not sure what has been cut down. Have tried the Backup 15; it's good, with exception of its being so slow, terribly slow, to either backup or restore. You might as well go for a walk around the block, several blocks, while waiting for it to finish.

Same issue and mentioned earlier by someone else, stymied by error message saying VCRUNTIME140_1.dll is missing.
I checked and have no less than three instances of this DLL listed. Obviously the program is looking in another directory than the one Microsoft put it in. Can someone inform me where this program is looking for this DLL?

Dennis W Comito, I copied the dll program to several locations in the Ashampoo directory and it appears to have resolved the problem.

Which file is the correct one to launch the program?

I see the folder in Program Files, but there's no .exe in the root directory, and there are several .exes in the subfolders.

I did not create a desktop icon. I see the program is running in the taskbar, but I want to know where to start it from in case I ever close the taskbar program.

Not very assuring when the first backup of a partition failed miserably.

-- 2021-03-02 --
10:26 : Activating...
10:30 : The backup was stopped because of the following error:
Error starting a Windows component (Volume Shadow Copy Service) that is essential for the backup (error VSS 0x8004230f).
Please restart your computer and try again.

I restarted 4 times, same error, uninstalling for good.

I kind of wish the offerings were less convoluted. I can't find anything indicating you can restore individual files or folders from 2021. However the Pro 15 version says it can.
Now for the convoluted... During install process an offer of Backup Pro 15 for $19.99 comes up (suggestion, include features of Pro 15 on that page. Or even better compare features of 2021 to Pro 15.).
While looking for information on Pro 15, I found that a giveaway for Pro 14 is currently available (and works on 3 computers). As well as an offer to sell the upgrade to Pro 15 for $14.99
Why not just offer to sell us the Pro 15 on the first page for $14.99 instead ?

You can try downloading & installing the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributal -- I *think* you're after v. 2015, or install a complete package of all versions. Note: it's always a good idea to check Windows Update after one of these C/C++ runtimes is installed, especially if it's included with an app installation.

Can it get files off an external hard drive that widows doesn't recognize?

Reply   |   Comment by Phil Bruch  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

I don't believe that any regular image backup app can read a drive that Windows cannot. Many drive manufacturers, e.g. WD, offer software to diagnose & attempt to repair their drives -- WD [at least used to] requires you run it before filing a warranty claim. Since it's an external drive, you *might* want to see if it's a regular hard disk inside, & if so, remove and check the drive itself, since the electronics connecting the drive may have failed.

After downloading and set up, I wrote my mailadress and password. Yet nothing happens. I'm stuck with spinning wheel.

As I started by uninstalling my previous GAOTD-Ashampoo Backup.

Can anybody help, please?

Niels O,
Same thing happened to me, it was just stuck on create new Ashampoo account screen on the installer. Either you need to already have an ashampoo account or it won't let you use throw away emails as you have to agree and unsubscribe from their emails later. Since I had an account from a previous giveaway I had to use that to get past that screen.
