long story shortened a little: on September 26, 2009 i was unable to install "AllMySongs Database 1.1", & a routine scan by Webroot Spy Sweeper 2 days before had quarantined the past giveaway "AllMedia Grabber"...

reason stated: high severity adware, which i still believe to be a false positive...

"AllMedia Grabber" had been on my pc since the giveaway, with no problems, and no report of adware from any real-time or on-demand scanners...no other reports of adware from giveaway community members...and one of the "adware" items quarantined was the uninstall entry in the Start Menu (?)...the other was the uninstall.exe in the program file (also a System Restore point)...all were called RegistryCleaner/Adware after a definition update & scan...

i wrote to FOTIS informing them so that they could have the false positive fixed...and i still believe it is a false positive...if not, community members would speak up...

so...today, Webroot Spy Sweeper would not allow an install of “AllMedia Grabber"...same reason...

FOTIS...please contact Webroot & have them verify your program is clean...it is disappointing that this problem was not addressed...and any Spy Sweeper users that want to try-and-buy may be scared away...

sorry to be so negative here today, guys... : (

You probably already have windows media center if you have vista or 7, so there is no need for this software. (WMC does a lot more than this).

Sorry, please erase previous post of mine.

Here’s sort of a free alternative:
There are a number of free programs to search inside files for other files (mostly aimed at game files, but might work with just dlls and exes)
http://wiki.xentax.com/index.php/Extraction_tools
Dragon UnPACKer is a pretty good open source one, use its hyper-ripper - http://www.elberethzone.net/lang-en/dup-news.html

Here's sort of a free alternative:
Dragon UnPACKer is made for extracting files from video games...not sure if it can do exe or dll...but if you use it's hyper-ripper you can extract from many files - http://www.elberethzone.net/lang-en/dup-news.html

This software is lacking in so many ways. The negatives far outweigh the pluses. Better alternatives to this are out there and have been mentioned.

#18 That says more about you than him. You could not be more wrong. His reviews are flawed on a daily basis. They carry no weight at all. It would be a huge benefit to this site if he didn't post his misinformation ever.

For icon extraction, I use @icon sushi . It's portable and free, with an easy to use interface. Drop your exe file, and extract the icons you need. It also handles image icon convervsion.

Ashraf acknowledges that his link is accidentally hooked to the older review, but at the bottom, he provides a link to the newer, updated review. I think that Ashraf is consistently a thorough reviewer, and, considering he is not a paid employee, people shouldn't jump so quickly to find something critical of his work. Nothing is more discouraging than quick fault-finding. I, for one, read his review first, and weigh it more than any other.

Putting the word "grab" in the program's title is appropriate. Opening the program and then leaving it unattended for a few minutes produced startling results. Without asking permission, or seeking direction from me, I later found that the program downloaded thousands of multimedia files completely filling a small partition. Wiping the partition and starting over again (thinking that I inadvertently did something wrong 1st time around) confirmed that I had installed an uncontrollable monster. BAM!, the program once again begin grabbing files without direction or permission. I am convinced that the grabbing of files is not the product of a program with advanced artificial intelligence capable of reading my mind and acting with purpose. A better description would be a program throwing a tantrum and acting without restraint.

Attention!
Do not check for updates! You will not be able to have the full product. I uninstalled it and reinstalled for that reason. Also, it can not handle files more than 2 Gigabytes.

RE: #12 - Oops. My Bad. This is a slight update and not 4.0. Does asks whether you want to update to version 4.3, but tells you that the version (4.2) you are installing does not support updating.

Sorry for confusion.

I don't expect much difference in this one as it is the same version 4.0 offered back in May of this year. It DOES grab all media though and you may be overwhelmed with what you get.

#8 Jester: As #5 Fubar states, this program looks for multimedia files that are embedded in other files. For example, you might have a game RaceCar.exe, that comes with several resource files ending in .rsc extension. AllMedia graber can search in the EXE and RSC files, looking for images, video, and audio files that might be embedded in these files. When it is done, you might find that you now have the individual car images, the game soundtrack, and the ending "winner's circle" video that plays when you've won the game.

This type of program doesn't do miracles, it merely looks for supported formats that may be embedded inside of files on your hard drive.

It is not a substitute for Media Downloaders that look for media embedded in HTML/XML pages on the Internet.

Hmmn, is asking me for a license and telling me that I cannot extract files larger than 300kb. Am i missing something here of is this it? If so, this is almost useless for extracting any audio or any hi-res pics.

#5 thanks for pointing attention to resource extracting instead of media file finding.

So this is useful just for developers who need to grab icons from executables (or something like).

However, files larger than 2Gb can't be handled.

I believe this kind of software can be useful, but THIS program is unable to manage files larger than 2Gb. So if you have to recover videos or images from a big broken zip archive or from a corrupted iso file of a dvd, you can't.

I tried with a iso ripped from a dual layer dvd found with a magazine. Windows XP pro eng w/sp3, 2Gb ram, sata hd NTFS.

Why not just use DownloadHelper in Mozilla Firefox? Absolutely free, and can even detect the HD videos. It can download videos, audio, zip, exe, and other file types. Also, just use Windows Explorer to download pics by right-clicking.

This program tries to do too much and therefore is not good at any of it. This will grab things you do not want and it keeps grabbing them when you try to get to not do so.

With some better controls it might be usable.

Ashraf gave the link to his 4.0 review, not the 4.2 giveaway version, which he also reviewed (4.3 is current). This is the Standard 4.2 version, not the Advanced. I disagree with several things Ashraf said. This is a many-times giveaway, first on September 30, 2007. On the earlier giveaways, I explained how this works and how to use it. You should uninstall earlier versions. This is a resource extractor, it finds multimedia items within other types of files, it doesn't find multimedia files. You shouldn't expect much from PDF's, etc. Compressed file types would require specific coding, it's just that Fotis makes broad claims without explaining that this only finds embedded media resources in uncompressed/unpacked/unencrypted files (or at least the media resources have to be exposed).

PROS:

* Post-install multi-lingual support for: Bulgarian, Danish, Deutsch, Dutch, English, French, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese (Brasil), Russian, Spanish, Swedish.
* Menu tree on left-side window pane displays PC's files/folders.
* Right-side window pane displays individual contents of left-side window pane's highlighted/selected files/folders.

* Allows user to: copy images to clipboard, save images to wallpaper, convert images to icons.
* Smooth, easy, intuitive program operation.
* Relatively small file download size (at 5.33 MB).

CONS:

* Program must be run using Admin Mode. in Vista OS.
* Post-install screen prompts user to update program to newer version - this is misleading, as Giveaway progs that are updated will revert to trial/paid versions.
* No local help guidance located within program (online only.)
* Does not support image formats: pcx, iff, tga, emf.
* Does not support video formats: swf, asf/wmv.
* Does not support sound/music format: ogg
* Price point of $39.90 seems a bit high for my personal taste ($20.00 would be much more reasonable, imho.)

SUMMARY: - Program is easy to install/use, is very feature-rich, and it successfully operates as described. Thanks, GOTD & Fotis.

The Good
* Integrates with Windows right click context menu.
* Can search files and folders
* Works well finding images in documents (i.e. .PPT, .PDF, .DOC, etc.).
* Built in image viewer.

The Bad
* Iffy performance with everything else.
* Ugly interface.
* Windows right-click context menu entry is for every file.
* You need to turn off "check for updates automatically" or you may go insane.
* The same file may be saved more than once.
