It's unclear if the giveaway is for just 1 year or forever. When I am taken to the registration page, it says "you will receive an email with an annual license" which makes it sound like the license is good for just 1 year. Can someone clarify whether this is a permanent license or if it is valid for just 1 year?

This is a good converter for HEIC as its not yet supported by many photo programs such as the popular free fastone image viewer. It allows conversion to both PNG and JPG, batch conversion, adjusting the image quality and keeping the exif data. The other program I suggest is the free
https://fr.copytrans.net/copytransheic/ because it integrates native support for HEIC codec directly into windows, which then after you choose open with windows photo viewer once will allow you to see the heic thumbnails in explorer and double clicking opens them in windows picture viewer. You can Convert to JPEG (all preserving the metadata, right-click -> Properties -> Details to see the metadata Also compatible with Microsoft Office and printing. But this good giveaway program converts to png, adjusts quality and batch converts so it too is very useful, thank you.
