Startup Defender is a small Windows startup manager program that sits in your Windows tray and constantly monitors in real time the startup locations on your PC to help prevent programs from auto starting up behind your back.

  1. At this hour the ratings are at 50/50 % …and I think its just that, a 50/50 program. Its good to have it but it wouldn’t really matter if I don’t :)

  2. Open downloaded ZardsStartupDefender.zip archive. Run setup.exe. Before you start the program, also run Activate.exe.

When activated, also Launch the program.

On Vista, this will give the following error, given by setup:
    Unable to execute file:
    C:\Program files\startup defender\startupdefender.exe

    CreateProcess failed; code 740.
You don’t have the required permissions for this action
    (translated roughly…?)
    OK.

Now start the program from the Start Menu. Handy Start Menu-program will place it under Utilities\Startup Defender.

    All will be ok.

I know this program from a previous giveaway and it actually was quite good! Which I did not expect, for it looks very very simple. It also does not show many entries (if you have the latest GOTD for AnVir Taskmanager, I guess you should keep using that one).

If you don’t have a startup defender running, catch this one. It’s light in resources, and stable. It also has a task manager to (batch) kill processes.

Really, don’t be fooled by it’s basic appearance. It will save you many times (for example, when you forgot to uncheck one of those bundled-softwares…)

Price: Free to try (30-day trial); $9.95 to buy – so fair price.

Very curious if anyone knows a real GOOD alternative (other than firewall software, which I hate – they keep nagging!).

    Peace!

  3. @2: I’ve never really looked for this type of program. For ages on
    WinXP I’ve used Mike Lin’s StartupMonitor (http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml).
One of those things I keep in my toolbox. I have not, however, installed it onto a 64-bit OS. Not sure if or how well it will work.
    It’s very tiny, a 60K download.
