Thanks Mike #31.. Your comments were very useful... I am normally wary of installing software related to audio-video for fear that it may screw up something in my system so your comments that this software is pretty self-contained was my green-light..

After installation, I downloaded two music videos from YouTube and fired up this program. In a few easy clicks I had extracted two mp3s. The sound quality was slightly muddied but otherwise not bad. Very easy to use. I like it.

It turned a 289MB FLV file into a 1.4GB AVI. (0_o) I don't see any bitrate settings or anything.

It is smaller and focuses on MP4 video. Video Converter can convert to more output format.

Btw, does anybody know why the subtitle plugin uses strange characters?

502 bad gateway, work around: change the language (next to the main logo on this page) into a different language, you will be directed to the home page of gotd, then select [proceed to download page] (translated in the selected language) and you can download and install the program. If not then try another language. Works for me when I change to local language (Nederlands).

Just one comment. Ashraf, thanks for your review at
http://dottech.org/gotdreviews/10102

Just one minor comment. Your review gives version number 4.2.0.60, which is correct for the downloadable from Wondershare's homesite. However, the GAOTD version is v4.2.0.56, so it looks like we're getting an older version, though maybe not by too much. (Just re-checked & verified both version numbers.)

Wondershare's MP4 Video Converter is a limited version of their conversion software -- the only formats it outputs are MP4, which isn't a bad thing if that happens to be what you need/want. In fact, it could be a very good thing, eliminating some of the confusion when the number of choices seems overwhelming. That's of course not their reason for an MP4 only version -- it's a way to drop the price for anyone who doesn't want to pay for things they'll never use, & MP4 is maybe the most common, hand-held player format.

Aside from a few registry entries, installation is entirely self-contained... MP4 Video Converter doesn't take over anything, add any files to the Windows' folders, just adds a program folder with 112 files, 11 folders, taking up ~27 MB. The interface itself is easy, where you add files to the job list, set the output format options, & go. Optionally you can open an editing window where you can Crop, Resize, Trim, & adjust the picture -- while the window remains for sub pictures [subtitles], it's deactivated in this version. Cropping is used not just to get rid of letterboxing, but black borders on recordings & sometimes logos. Trimming means setting where the video starts & ends. Adjusting the picture is similar to using the tools in a basic image editing app, setting things like brightness, contrast & color.

Besides it's built-in video decoders, MP4 Video Converter uses your installed software to decode some of the video files you can import. IF you can play the file in Windows' Media Player, you can *probably* use this app to convert it.

#16: "Well, I have been hoping recently that there will be more software other than video converters."

If it helps to explain what may seem like a lot of video converters in the world...

1) lots of people download, try, & buy video converters because there's decades of video to watch, there's dozens of formats that video has to be converted to so we can watch it the way we, as consumers want, and because video's so complicated, any app designed to make conversion easy is a compromise -- there is so far nothing close to perfect. When someone says Super or Format Factory or whatever is the absolute best, please remember that that is their experience -- no more -- no less. No video converter works on every system, or with every source video. Some (like Super & Format Factory) are more prone to conflict with other software. And of course, one cannot compare the results of program *X* vs. program *Y* without trying both... the output is often by no means identical.

#17: "Would be even better if it could use all 4 cores on my machine tho"

Yes, you've hit on a main problem. While some worry about CPU usage, many if not most people doing serious video encoding want all cores peaked as much as possible so the encoding gets done fast as possible. Unless you're doing encoding over a network [using the power of more than 1 PC to get encoding done even faster] what to really watch for is stream encoding, using the GPU, which makes an astonishing difference. [Note: lower CPU usage during encoding/conversion is normally a sign of poor program efficiency. Alas it does not make for easy multitasking -- the most common solution for current, multi-core systems is some option in the program itself to simply not use some of the available cores... obviously not needed if the app isn't capable of using them anyway.]

#21: "Can someone PLEASE tell me a software to use for making youtube videos and others ready for standard television?"

You need to define *ready*. If you want it to look like what comes out of the cable box, forget software & buy a magic wand. ;-)

Seriously though, if you want to take small frame &/or highly compressed web video, & display it on a TV, you're best off getting hardware designed for that, though whether that means a DivX capable DVD player or something like those set-top media player boxes is up to you. Many new TVs are web connected & have this built in. Using software to convert to DVD mpg2 is sure to disappoint. Playing from your PC directly to your TV is often an easy way out where you don't have to do anything but play the video (many PCs, laptops, & graphics cards have TV out, & if not, converter devices are cheap), but not everyone has their PC & TVs in the same rooms.

If anyone want to know why software conversion is a bad idea in this case... making a video frame smaller, &/or making the file smaller, means throwing out some of the picture data. Usually it also means doing away with the interlacing a std. TV requires. While electronics engineers have been somewhat successful pulling this missing data out of thin air, software developers haven't. Even DivX/Xvid can be iffy if you have to convert to it from flv (i.e. Youtube), but at least you don't need the re-size, & the DVD player electronics can often compensate (depending on the player's level of DivX support.

Ashraf, your inputs are always very good. But your 'Bad's on this product are trivial, IMHO. OK, OK, OK we get it...Format Factory is good (they can't be paying you to say that... it's freeware), But I had FF fail on an image resize/conversion a couple of weeks ago, and as you often say, new versions come out so fast it's hard to keep up. Me, I like more than 1 program on my machine, so I'll keep my FF, and this latest of the Great Wondershare's, too! (PS: they don't pay me either ;)

Just tried out a slideshow from jpegs.

Nice is that this prog doesn't make one big .swf file or the like but a small 13K one with the jpegs seperately copied. Meaning that the slideshow works well on a web site, no need to download the lot before it starts.

When the pictures remain unaltered it is not necessary or desireable that it recompresses the pictures, though. That always means quality loss. But this can be easily circumvented by simply overwriting the copies with the originals.

Pity audio can't be added.

The app complained about errors it generated in the action script, it played well still.

Just a note for the Wondershare products. As Ashraf stated there is no option in the program itself to change “processing priority”.
I always just ctr-alt-del and change the priority to low and have no trouble with the CPU usage. I've had no problem doing this with any and all of the Wondershare products that have been offered here (love them all), that have become my programs of choice for the abilities offered.

I know it's a little bit of an annoyance to c-a-d but not that much trouble, and the program doesn't fight it as some do.

To #13 (Marilyn) and others - I notified GOTD of this Gateway 502 error message yesterday, and the problem apparently has not been fixed yet. In addition, when I try to vote for certain comments, I get an error message that says "Please try again later." I sent another two messages now to Bubby and WhiteRabbit-UK (both GOTD administrators) so they can as the GOTD technical team to fix this problem. Hopefully, they will resolve this issue soon.

Wondershare always gives us high quality programs so I imagine this one's no different. Personally I can't stand to watch a movie on a screen that's been proven to cause eye strain, headaches and potential problems for children and teens down the road. What pleasure can a person get from watching a screen the size of your hand? I limit my children as to how often they can text and use such devices so their communication skills become better.

Wondershare always has great programs, and I imagine this one has the quality of any others offered by them. Personally I can't stand watching a movie on a screen that doctors are proving to cause eye strain and potential eye problems down the road for children. I won't let my children use any such devices on a regular basis as well. Between texting and being on the computer I find I have to regulate their useage so they learn things like "How to talk with proper word usage, and exercise". LOL

The good
* The conversion speed is fast
* Support HD video conversion
* Can add watermark to the resulting video, which is needed by people who want to brand their video
* Do what it claims
* Clean and comfortable interface

The bad
* Still uses 100% of CPU of my computer just like the other video converters
* Though it's not bad, but not free
* How to enable the "subtitle" plugin? Seems there is no enough information for this in the HELP CONTENT manual.
