I downloaded X7 before and then got to buy Evolution 8. I have done programming on lots of languages but not much on HTML. This is a pretty good software to jump start any web development I should say and it pays off for the speed you can get your designs. In my experience in programming its pretty frustrating to code everything from scratch and is never a good practice. By taking care of a lot of the nuances in coding you can actually focus on other stuff like the actual content of the site.

For a fast simple site, this is perfect. Sometimes people just want to get something on a site fast & have it look good, which this does. It's nice, for that!

Ya kmow, the people who posted about Evolution 8 have a real problem, don't they? Just can't quite get their heads around reality. This WAS'NT Evolution! What's the matter with you?

Not a bad software, but I don't understand how people can make really good site using wizard.
There was Ultima Website program on GAOTD, that is a good choice for novices of web design.

@26 - not true. The Smart version, at version 8 (as opposed to version 7 offered here) does allow uploading to the web, read the feature comparison here: http://www.websitex5.com/en/compare_3.html

Only thing is. the bastards seem to have completely removed any download link to the Smart 8 version. It could never be found via the navigation on the site but at least a search for "Smart" revealed the download link - no more.
Anyway, it's not worth it...

For a site that I created using this software you could visit http://www.cvtruckspares.co.uk
Or you can reach it through my own site by just clicking on my name below.
My own site was done the long, laborious way by hand coding.

Oops, what was taken from their site for comparison is below. I missed catching my cleanup.

WebSite X5 is available in two different versions: EVOLUTION 8 and COMPACT 8.

WebSite X5 Evolution 8 includes over 1400 templates and offers all of tools for you to create professional websites, e-commerce shopping baskets already prepared for credit card payments and blogs. Amongst the numerous functions you can create: Reserved Areas with multiple user profiles, Intro pages with links for the choice of language, RSS Feeds and much, much more.

WebSite X5 Compact 8 includes 500 templates and is ideally suited for creating website for hobbies, clubs etc and for those sites where all the advanced features of WebSite X5 Evolution 8 are not required.

I don't get it, is this supposed to be an older version to interest in buying newer and better or a super lite just for GAOTD. Below is taken from there 2 products that they have available from the link at the top of the page. OK I downloaded WebSite X5 v 7 from here and the other one ver 8 from Ask.com. The GAOTD ver has more models (see templates) but the UI on ver 8 is more flashy 21 files and folders in ver 8 as compared to 23 in ver 7. 26 model folders in ver 8 but 50 in ver 7 GAOTD. I probably won't take a closer look until TM, but anyone just starting on being a web designer should check out all of the resources at ask.com. Hope this helps someone.

At first I was rather impressed, for someone with little to no knowledge of website coding it was a breeze to make a "quickie" for testing purposes. For my taste the supplied templates were not all that great and rather drab so I headed to the programs sight as I noticed some nice templates available for free download. Unfortunately to my surprise, after downloading a handful of them, I found out that they would not load into this version. They work fine in the newest version 8.

I also notice it does not do to well at removing everything that was created on install when un-installing the program. Other than the mentioned above as well as it's limited ability to do what other free programs can do, I still must say it is a nice clean program that does what it says it will do and is definitely a winner for the novice user. And although this is not the current version it is free and in my book makes this a win, win situation for the user.

The problem with this type of thing is that they always generate sloppy non-standards complaint code...that is code with errors.

For those that don't write code by hand (and you should because then you'll know how everything works and how to troubleshoot), I will suggest these FREE WYSIWYG from Mozilla, the good folks that make Firefox. These at least will generate standard error free code in the WYSIWYG enviroment:

Stand alone 'KompoZer':
http://www.kompozer.net/

Or the whole suite, now known as 'SeaMonkey':
http://www.seamonkey-project.org/

Having said that...again I must say that if you are going to build a site, your best bet is to learn how to read, write and understand xhtml and css.

What am I missing? Today's product seems to be crippleware combined with an upgrade scam.

1. GOTD says "We also suggest you the Tutorial, for a brief introduction" but the tutorial is not about the product being given away today!

2. GOTD says "The program is available for $92.43 (WebSite X5 Evolution 8), but it will be free for our visitors as a time-limited offer." But Evolution 8 is not being given away today!

3. Today's product, Smart 7, is nowhere to be found on the websitex7 web page. I can only conclude that this is a) an old not-ready-for-prime-time version or b) a crippled version made for GOTD.

4. When I launch the program it always "offers" to upgrade to Evolution 8. If I click the button it sends me to a special GOTD page offering a discount for Evolution 8.

5. Is GOTD getting a kickback on each "upgrade"?

This product is not even close to Evolution 8 (if you believe the tutorial)! If you want Evolution 8 with about a $15 discount then go for today's giveaway otherwise I suggest you pass on this. See BossQQ above for alternatives.

Why has no one commented on this? What am I missing?

Pretty worthless, very amateur design of websites, I was able to install it only with few minimal errors. But I would not purchase the software, you think that they would put there best product for people to review instead they offered a out of date piece of software that has some crappy templates, my four year old son can do better designs!

@mex #35,
Thanks. The examples on the website are pretty varied. But the concern I have is whether this GAOTD version, which is X5 Smart 7 has all the features needed to build a complete website or not. I went through the tutorial and it looks comprehensive but the tutorial is for the Evolution 8 version of the software. I see no point in downloading X5 Smart 7 only to realize that certain features are stunted and not available, which is most likely going to be the case. Then I will need to buy the Evolution 8 version, but then the discounted promotion may not be available after today. So, all in all, thanks GAOTD and Incomedia, but maybe not this time.

Aside from the obvious dictating-of-desktop-fonts problem - it (WebsiteX5 8 - not this version) is a decent app for someone who wants to pump out some simple, uninspired web pages. A year ago, on XP, I was actually a little impressed with this one.

It does it's job rather well - making websites for us idiots - and produces expected results. You get what you give, in other words: you want to spend no money or time learning to design your webpage? It is going to look like it.

Downloaded last time and used it to build a website i never published, then computer crashed so happy to see it here again. This program is good fro beginners and intermediate web design people. Uses some what of the same style that Dreamweaver has for building the page minus the CSS editing. If you are just someone who wants to build a web page without having to learn HTML/XHTML and CSS this is great for them. Having used Dreamweaver CS4 in school during my web page design course, this is great to use without having to pay $150 for Dreamweaver.

One plus over Dreamweaver is that you don't have a mile long file list on the side and you can move project from computer to computer without having to go through a procedure to add it to Dreamweaver so it can be edited.

#16 and #17 -- Thanks; between you, you've summed up what I was thinking. Objective and to the point, with no whining or complaining. Marty, you reminded us that the program was FREE, and the decision to download or not was up to the user. Lastly, too few of us bother to say a little "TY" to GAOTD for their offerings, whether or not we give the programs a thumbs up or down on any given day.

As for myself, I can't imagine making a website with or without a Wizard, but I certainly appreciate being offered a program that might help if I weren't so tech-challenged. Thank you both and thank you GAOTD. (I have some great games and even "real" programs I use all the time that I got here and didn't have to pay for. :)

I'm not a smart person to create a website with a complicated coding. Starting with zero experience, once I made a website with WebSite X5 Smart 7. It took 4 days to make a website into a website as I want (actually, not yet). Then I realized, we will never be developed only with a program like this. Then I switched to wordpress. It took 2 weeks to create a website that now I have (YES, I still do not understand about website coding until now ..).
So, if you want to create a simple website with this WebSite X5 Smart 7 without wanting to change, please see the first results (my old website interface), here:

http://acarossa.web.id/showtime/

But if you want to create a website which is quite lovely to spend and took about 3 times longer, just use wordpress, please see the look here:

Today's offering is fine for the inexperienced to create a very basic site. I tried it, and was happy to see that it uses CSS and DIVs vs. tables.

However, I'm very disapponted that GOTD offered it in the manner it did. Very deceptive by someone. The Price description says:

"The program is available for $92.43 (WebSite X5 Evolution 8), but it will be free for our visitors as a time-limited offer."

... but what we download is a stripped down version not available on the company's website, but also offered for free elsewhere. Needless to say, I uninstalled it. (Revo Uninsdtaller showed it added 700 registry entries!)

I tried out a very early version of X5 around 3 years ago, not because I was unable to code a web site, but because I didn't have lots of time to devote to it.
It worked well enough compared to other products on the market, that I purchased it, and later upgraded to the Evolution 8 version when it arrived.
It does what it claims, and without fuss.
It's easy to create effective menus, include multimedia and incorporate RSS or blog feeds.
What is really useful the speed and simplicity with which things can be changed or updated.
The final generated site(s) are easy to test and are not bloated with useless code.
The Incomedia forums are also helpful for tweaks and tips.
For me it worked and continues to work, and I would recommend it to anyone starting out.

In one of the comments someone mentions that this software is free on the publisher's website. I went to the site and found the "free" software is not free, it's a trial offer with limitations on the number of web pages you can create and the page can't be uploaded.

From the web site:

The trial version does not have any time limitations and will allow you to create 5 pages or levels max. You will not be able to upload your websites with this version.

I agree with comments #7, 11 and 12. What a waste of time with this program: the installation takes forever, it started exactly the same, in a word - a nice packed monstrosity. I have uninstalled it urgently, as a result I found a wonderful "gift": 699 registry entries left behind, a setup.exe in the system32 (iwsetup.exe) and still have not searched in depth ... I was lucky with Revo Uninstaller that helped me in this job! I remain faithful to this 100% professional program - BlueVoda. Furthermore, it's totally free...

I have used this software both v7 and v8 Evolution. They are excellent, if you know nothing about Website Design or Graphics Design. It will for sure create a good looking website for you. But if you need a creative touch or want to create a complete and truly excellent looking website then you need either
* Microsoft Expression Web 2/3 or
* Adobe Dreamweaver or if you can't afford the above then go for
* CoffeeCup.

As someone above said, creating Website is not easy. It involves Graphics Design and HTML Coding (very easy to learn) skills for the least, which takes atleast 3 months to master.

In a honest opinion, if I am a new starter, I will go for Microsoft Expression Web or CoffeeCup. And If I know a bit of HTML and Photoshop then I will go for Adobe Dreamweaver.

I want to learn and would love a good structured tutorial that does not take too much previous knowledge as granted.

I have evolution and use it several times a week to build sites for various non-profits around town. It's simple, quick, and does what the tin describes. I know how to code but this is so much faster.

I can only assume that all the negative shots are from coders that feel threatened because everyday people can now build a site that does what they expect without paying 1000's of dollars for "professional" help.

I'm e-mailing all my friends about this free offer. Evolution is a giant step forward in site development for those of us that aren't snobish about being able to code or for those that want to play in this arena.

As far as creativity. I'm as creative as most "professional" snobs and can do what I want with this software.

Remember people, this is free. If you're so damn good at creating websites than don't download it and stick with frontpage, dreamweaver (own both) or what ever you want and quite complaining. Creative critics are welcome but complaing only gets in the way.

Thank you GAOTD and keep up the good work.

I think some of the comments here are failing in objectivity.
Sure Bossqq and your other name, you are right, it is frustrating if you want to create your own, but the blurb actually says it is a WIZARD and we all know how much creative input / control one has over a wizard. SFA.

Their marketing tactics aside, as a really easy to use, simple, point and shoot piece of software for people with NO creative urges or desires it builds a web page in x amount of clicks.
If that is what you want, go for it, if you want more creative control and artistic input, pass. Simple.

Sure there are other more functional and feature rich apps out there giving greater control but don't just knock something because it does do what you want, especially when it says it won't on the lid.

That's a bit like going to the butcher and losing your rag because he won't sell you a can of paint.

I downloaded the software on GAOTD last time it was available. I made several sites using it in the past two years. Yes, of course they were simple sites, but quick and good enough for my objectives. When needed, I edited and changed the source to match my needs. I recommend X5 for people not familiar with programing. I also suggest you to periodically save your work, because I got a few crashes.

As was stated over and over when this software was offered here earlier, this *IS* free anyway. You can download it from the programmer's website for free - each and every day. Also, this is crippled to an extent that anyone with only the slightest design aspirations will bin it immediately.
What I find pretty cheeky is that the manufacturer again acts the generous guy by giving away software that they are offering for free anyway! Shame on them!

I once purchased X5 without trying before (I never said I’m clever) and after some effort I got my money back and deleted it. An absolutely useless, even annoying program to work with if you are a creative person. You have to do exactly what tell you -make a website in 3 steps or so- and the end result does not look original at all. No space for creativity, it’s the kind of webbuilder that ‘free webhosts’ offer but then you work online. I even do not want this for free. Their website is full of ‘blabla’ and false promises that can be pretty confusing for newbies.

It will not operate with large fonts being used on the desktop. Software should not dictate what settings a user prefers for normal operation! I will be deleting it as I do not want my normal ease of computer use to be over-ridden by such a fussy program. Other than this I had no problems with its installation or with closing it after use.
