Not a problem with Starburn as such. But if you
experience (upon reinstalling XP) a "starportlite.sys not found"
error message Starburn is your problem.

I had to uninstall StarBurn and hack the Windows registry
thereby getting rid of all traces of Starburn before I could reinstall XP.

Cheers
Paul

If this is the application I think it is, I already have a freeware
version of the software. How come they're offering it here?

There have been no problems with it, certainly hasn't hijacked my
start page.

It's good software, suits me much better than (spit!) Nero, even if some
of the wizards are a bit cumbersome to use.

Together with the Starburn Package there is also included. 'Install Starwind Lite'.
Having looked at Rocket Division Web Page,(as a beginner) I am still not clear as to the purpose of Starwind Lite. My system is Windows XP.
I would be very grateful if some knowledgeable person among the commentators or of GAOTD could shed some light on this.

#42 + #47 every "newer software makers" may stopp "checking its compatibility with Win2K" - but if they tell the people it is running than it should, wright? - and: my system PIII 900 MHz 512 MB RAM, system HD160 GB and RAID1 320 GB, with Win2k pro SP4, Sunbelt Firewall and Antivir (both freeware) is running without system faults and without any data lost since years - is yours too? - so I may ask why a programm is not running even they tell me that it will do. - I hope they will help, becuase the program looks fine.

Stee-rike three and it's out.

Uninstall leaves some reg keys behind, easy to remove.

Burns great- until you reboot.

And that includes disabling AVG, AnVir, Madotate, Cobian Backup and Intellipoint during install and attempted run.

Oh well. wonder if the free version will work better.

Now where did I put that? Guess it's time to investigate other freeware burning proggies for Win2k. and it burned so *well*, too!

Installed and ran without any problems mentioned, on Vista. I opened the setup as administrator, unchecked the Emulator box(thanks #18-tadfw) and finished as normal. It pays to read the feedback before downloading or installing! Thanks Guys, works great and seems to do more than Creator 9. "To #28, you can get "DVD Shrink" at afterdawn.com ,for free. You might also want to check out "AnyDVD", that solved alot of my problems. If DVD shrink doesn't solve your problem, you may need a dual layer disc.

I got Plato DVD Copy (through GGOTD), and tried it with 2 DVDs - copied it to the directory to my videos -, but can't get either one to play, so I decided to download StarBurn to give it a try. Haven't had a chance to try it yet, but will post something about it in the Forums, if I have any problems with it.

Tried again this is three or four times today alone. It'll load the splsh scree showing the name of the product and the version number. pauses about ten to twelve seconds and then shuts down. That is as far as it will get. Then say it has encountered a problem and needs to close offering to send a report to Microsoft. I had the same problem on January 7, and wanted this program badly. I cannot get it to work irregardless. And its not that I am a newbie and not tech savy. This is the only program that I have had problems with. I had this same exact problem on Jan 7, and I am having it now. I have the older version 9.1 and it opens just fine. On Jan 7, this one opened several times like it should till I actually tried to copy or decrypt a DVD. After that LOCK UP, LOCK UP, LOCK UP. Can we ask for a re-run of a rerun with a corrected problem for the next re-run....... I'd still like to have the operational version. thanks snaggle

wellll..... yep, it now installs on win2k sp4, but there's a flicker of what might be an error message right before the 'recommend to restart', and though it starts if you run it right off the install, when rebooted, it crashed right after the splash screen.

splash says registered, though.

reinstall, and ran it without reboot, seems to burn a dvd ok- gonna wait to reboot after the dvd md5 cross-check finishes, find out more then. hmmm..

#21 Andre just rerun the set up once again .when the dialog box freezes, restart the program(reset it,if you want).Go to C\program files\Giveawayoftheday\starburn .you will see an icon user.regdouble click it and it will be added to the registry. Now start starburn again.I think that will help.

Also,if you get the error again, start starburn by boosting it with Advanced windows care(One of GOATD offer).Good Luck

Reading these comments is quite amusing. This program is good enough for free and it runs fine on a Vista 32 bit system, so quit complaining. Anyone who allows any program to hijack or change their browser home page is a fool. Uncheck the box for gods sake.

If anyone from Rocket Division Software happens to be reading this:

I brought it up, and from the initial view of my Folder List in the left panel, I right clicked and deleted a folder. It was deleted, but remained in the left panel, even after a refresh. Attempts to click on it resulted, of course, in an error message.

To #28, I suggest you look for and install DVD Shrink, This does as it says Shrinks the movie to 4.odd Gb so it'll fit on our usual blank discs (unless you have DL discs?)

I had no problems at all once I'd shrunk a movie to my Hard drive, Then select the movie option in this program and point to the folder Shrink had saved to.

Works great, Thank again GAOTD :-)

Hey, mx2072- the system req's say:

Windows 2000 SP4, I got that.
800 MHz Intel Pentium III class processor- I got lots more than that.
512 MB of RAM- I got that.
30 MB of disc space for StarBurn application data- I got oodles of that.
CD/DVD drive- I got one of each. -RW both- not old models, either.

XP is mostly Win2000 in a new dress, on a leash.
The spec says it ought to work, I'd like it to.
If it said XP minimum, I wouldn't have company in cussin' when it locks up.
Or be downloading and trying to install, either.
Official support or not, lots of us still run Win2K Pro. "No longer a cash cow" is not "outdated."

Thanks gaotd, installed and works great on my vista premium. missed this last time so i appreciate the chance to get it this time.

As far as #34 belgian dude,
nannysamdi has never used a burn program before and has successfully done it with this one, so if a newbie can use this program to burn a dvd without any problems does that mean this is a good or crappy program?

Chuck burned a great copy in bluray and regular cd/dvd, hd copy had issues but doesnt apply to him because he doesnt need it. so this program does what he needs it to do. and does it with very good results.

The "unchecking change homepage issue" is not there any more so it doesnt matter or apply any more.

as far as there being free programs that do the same as this one. well i have three other dvd burn programs myself, and most of them will burn most dvd's. but when i find a dvd that wont work on one of them i usally get it to work on another, so unless you have actually installed and ran this program and compared it to the other free one, how can you tell me that the other one is just as good as this one. or as fast, or easy to use.

Has anyone else had problems burning HD-DVD? The disk plays, but plays terribly. Has lines on the far right side, with garbled sound fluctuations that interact with it the lines. Overall, I love this software! I recommend it to anyone who can get this to work.

It is good they fixed the Foxfire bug, I guess. All one had to do before installing the first giveaway was unselect the "make starburn homepage" selection.

and W2K is an outdated OS ... meaning, Microsoft stopped supporting it a long while ago, so maybe newer software makers stopped checking its compatibility with Win2K, as most users probably use Vista or XP by now.

This software runs perfectly fine on my computer. Haven't tested its features though. Now, if this software comes with dvd decrypter included, then it's cool ^_^

That means, no need for the other dvd decrypter freeware thing anymore!

And if this software works well, it'll be a good free alternative to nero!

I do not mean to be unkind, but one of the most important rules in using this site is to absolutely ignore the majority of negative comments. There must be a lot of computer-challenged folks who come to this site and bellyache about the free software not installing properly, hijacking homepage, etc. To those of you voicing those type complaints take a basic course in how to use your computer. Particularly galling is the idiotic complaint that this software hijacks the homepage, search engine, etc. For it to do that you actually have to check a box and give permission...it doesn't default and ask you to uncheck to keep it from doing so. Did some of you think when you checked that box that it would not work and are now bellyaching when it followed through and did?? Get real and stop demeaning these giveaways with ignorant comments! This installs and activates perfectly.

I think there is a "starwind Lite" bundled with the Starburn. Unfortunately, its not anything I'd need (its a storage software, right?) and I'm unhappy that it was not an "option" in the install choices.

The installation went fine on XP SP2. It sees my CD/DVD writer but does not seem to do anything using it. It would not erase a re-writable CD -- which I then erased with Nero in about 15-20 seconds -- and then would not write a single MP3 to that disk. It took forever to "convert" the MP3 to the format [presumably CDA] that it was going to write but it finally did. Then I told it to burn that one file to the CD. Ten minutes later I gave up because it was still at zero percent. Starburn is unbearably slow on my system [AMD X2 5600, 2 gig ram] and does not seem to do anything on my writer [LiteOn DVDRW model LD-20A1S]. This problem may stem from the program not working with that writer -- it is not on the list on their website.

I am not going to blow the program away yet since it looks interesting but if it will not work with my writer at all, I am back to Nero!

For those experiencing problems with the Setup.exe using Win2K Pro SP4 -- have you re-started your system after installing first, before trying to open the program immediately?

More often than not, this should always be done first.

Perhaps alot of these downloads just simply aren't compatible with Win2K Pro SP4.

Where to start.

1. "...this time with fixed bug that affected some Firefox users...."
It wasn't a bug. It was something that was intentional. If it wasn't intentional then why have a check box that those that took time to read could use to avoid the problem.

2. "if you unselect change my default homepage at install page, it doesnt make any change and hijack"
Although true it doesn't take into account how people behave. Look at how many people have voted or commented on this offer in comparison with the icon program. You know why there are so few? Because the rest didn't even notice that this was on offer as well. The same applies on having something like that being the default choice. If they didn't want to trick people into it then they shouldn't have made it the default choice.

3. I searched but the only difference I could find between the commercial version and the free one was the network burning features.
Even those that need network burning features wouldn't, or shouldn't, be that daft to pay 500 USD for it.

4. Thank you NannySamdi for making me laugh. Read that persons comment #20.
In other words NannySamdi doesn't know the program, hasn't never used a CD/DVD burner, but still thinks this program is good. It just leaves me asking why did he bother to post?

5. Thank you chuck for being .. inconsistent => comment #30
"It had weird lines... the sound seemed to react somewhat to... the lines. ---- I wish I didnt have so many clicks to get it to burn. I love the end results though!"
Translation : It messes up, sound is off, is not exactly user friendly but hey what a great result!
*sigh*

I really like seeing new products by new companies. That is just it. New products. Something that has an advantage over other programs. Something that works easier, better, smoother even then the existing programs. As Richard (#13) pointed out Imgburn does all this program does and it's free. http://www.imgburn.com/
The only thing it lacks is network burning capabilities, which is something only a very rare number of people will actually need or even have a use for.

So thank you Giveaway but no thank you.

Okay now I found the problem on W2KSP4.

1. It does not like that Daemon tools are installed because it used the same 'SCSI Pass Through Direct' software driver but a new version.
So uninstall Daemon before installation and restart (can be reinstalled after)

2. The installer used regedt32 to install key with a parameter that does not work on W2K, so the setup hangs.
Manually import user.reg in the program dir, then kill regedt32.exe via taskmanager to complete the installation.

Now restart and the installation looks like it works 4 now.

I downloaded it last time it was offered a couple weeks ago. I succesfully burnt a Blue-Ray disk. Did a few other regular DVD burns. All of which were successful. However, I did HD-DVD. It had weird lines on the far right of the screen, and the sound seemed to react somewhat to the fluctuations of the lines. Real odd, have never had such before on any burn I have ever done. I love this program so much that i am not going to bother with this little upgrade. Unless it is a fix for the HD burn anomaly. I have Blue-Rat, so I dont need HD-DVD cept my neighbor has DVD-HD. I have XP-Pro version. My only complaint is, I wish I didnt have so many clicks to get it to burn. I love the end results though!

Same as #21 and #25. On Win2K Pro SP4 it hangs, after reboot it says eval version. Tried to run the eval version and it crashed. It may work in XP but it doesn't seem to play nice with Win2K Pro. Thanks anyway GAOTD.

BTW, if you're going to do a rerun, how about Aston? That program runs beautiful on Win2K Pro and is only using 6Mb of RAM! Best looking desktop I've ever found for Win2K Pro, thanks GAOTD!

I am searching for a program that will make it easy to copy my more valeable collector dvd's and as to keep them in pristine condition, and so far I have not found one program yet, that lets me really pic one extras I want to keep.

This software says you can split it, but nothing showing how or where to do it....just the file is too big. Where is menus selection screen etc????? for a $400 plus software, it should have some features, or maybe I just can't find them.
If any of you guys figured it out, that would be cool to share. So far I need help or maybe this is not the program I should get??

Complains about my Antivirus program when installing 'iSCSI ..' and then say it needs to Reboot then the Setup program stalls....
So no License Key, and I need to rollback to before the installation.

W2K SP4 with AVG free antivirus.

For a Re-Run this is bad.

I was happy to see the re-run of this today because I really wanted to try this one. However it is not fixed in anyway. I am experiencing the same exact problems this time as last time.
