It's obvious that SoThink is a big hit with GOAD users, and for good reason! They are good!

Even though I have ConvertVid from an offer here a few weeks back, I grabbed this one too.

It installed and activated fine, runs fine and works well. I haven't had time to compare this with ConvertVid yet, so I'm not sure which one I'll keep and use. I'm thinking it will most likely be this that stays.

One issue I'd like to see corrected with the installer.

When you install any SoThink app you get taken to the site under the false impression that it's already registered/activated, when in fact you do need to put the registration info in when you launch for the first time.

Hey SoThink, any chance of you offering your SWF Quicker and your SWF easy here?

For those commenting about the 'limited time offer'. I'm thinking that must mean the 24 hour period it's offered here on GOTD?

Thumbs up! Kudos to GOTD for getting this and to SoThink for creating good applications.

Tried several times but it keeps saying 30 days trial. I don't consider a 30 day trial to be 'free'. Not much of a give away of the day in my opinion.

I do not recommend and AVS stuff to anyone anymore.

Neither do I but for a different reason.

AVS Video Converter uses FFmpeg (a free software) in violation of ffmpeg's license terms.

I've downloaded it twice and installed it 6 times, but every time I try to open it I get the following Microsoft message:

Video Encoder for Adobe Flash has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

With the usual buttons ,...Debug, Send Error report, Don't send.

I've sent, not sent, and tried the debug buttom to no avail.

I see that most other comments are possitive about the company and the software. Why am I having trouble? Help please.

Thanks, P.B.

The chief advantage of Flash video, is that it's easy to get up on a web page, & the Sothink Video Encoder for Adobe Flash does make it easy -- besides a wizard interface, it has the option of giving you the html to include on your web page. Please Note: If you're not interested in putting your video on a web page, the Flash video format is not for you -- almost every other format is more efficient, most look better, & unless you include a Flash player, are less hassle for your viewers to play.

To accept different video formats as input, the Sothink Video Encoder for Adobe Flash includes several video filters (mostly open-source from Gabest). Since these are somewhat common, there is a chance (though slight) that installation might break existing video software you have installed -- many of the video conversion programs featured on GOTD rename common files to prevent just this sort of thing from happening. Sothink Video Encoder for Adobe Flash also includes ffdshow -- [http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffdshow] for latest version & detailed info/ratings. Also designed for decoding video (in this case used to *understand* video for input), ffdshow can both conflict with other video software, and take over decoding/playback from software you already have installed. Bottom line: it might be useful to visit the wiki [http://www.ffdshow.info/] &/or backup your system before installing.

For alternatives, Adobe & on2 [http://www.on2.com/] have the only 2 official encoders AFAIK, but more and more conversion programs now offer un-official support for this format -- go to videohelp.com -> tools -> searching on flv = 35 hits for starters.

Thank you GAOTD,this is a good video encoder for flash/flv and works ok.
There is another, even better, freeware called Moyea Video4Web Converter.
I am using this to make best flv videos for uploading to web.
see: http://www.moyeamedia.com/video-to-flash/
We can also use this to convert several video-formats to flv and merge
them(if you so require)to a single large video.

Sure, there are a lot of similar freeware programs out there, and I gave them a try before buying this one (several months ago). Why? Because it actually works, and does what I need. There a lot of settings. You have control over bitrate, which has a ton to do with final quality--but the higher it is, the bigger the file. The control bar really is just that. The others have the usual "play" , "pause", etc. etc., but what I like the best about this one, is the capability to grab the slider and move to any frame you want--or go back and forth with the image real quick just because you can and it looks cool. Being able to go frame by frame is great. The control bar itself comes with a good variety of styles. I use it on my weather site for the time lapses. The .AVI the cams put out are around 12mb. This compresses them to about 4mb, with good enough video quality. Flash files take a few seconds to load, but once they do, this encoder makes for a smooth show. It's installed on XP 64.

#29 All I did was uninstall IE 7 from the control panel. It did not remove the IE icon from my task-bar. When I clicked on the icon, IE 7 launched. I cant explain why I didnt have to reinstall IE 7 unless there was an automatic backup. You can download IE 7 optimized for Google at: http://www.google.com/toolbar/ie7/

Below is an example I've encoded from a 768Kbps Windows Media source file. It did a very nice job considering the source was already a low bitrate file. Very easy to use, and worked as advertised.

___________________________________

I have all of the AVS video software suites and have used them for several years. Most of them are just OK, not great, lots of problems converting from different formats, especially anything TO flv. They have not upgraded any older software in over a year but have come out with new versions. I had purchased the unlimited upgrades to AVS Video editor, but guess what, if I want the new version I have to buy it now. I do not recommend and AVS stuff to anyone anymore. There are far too many free and better paid alternatives to their nonsense.

And before someone jumps in and says to use SUPER. In my opinion, SUPER is not so SUPER.

Even though I do not need todays GAOTD it is still a good catch.

#24 JohnO: Yes, the W7 Beta expires then, but the RC comes out in June and will be good for a year according to a MS document accidentally let out by TechNet this past week, and they will not limit the number of RC copies available also according to this unimpeachable source. But I do not know if you can "upgrade" from the beta to the RC (or later on from the RC to the RTM) of W7, and thereby save any apps you have from GAOTD

This tool is good but it’s obsolete: it only encodes to H.263 video/mp3 audio, like youtube did in the begining. These days youtube and other sites are using H.264 video/AAC audio since they can achieve higher quality at the same bitrate.

Thanks for the warning re: windows 7 expiring. And to Ivan (#27)--we are talking about operating systems, not browsers. I'm running the beta test of Windows 7, which really should be an update to Vista rather than a 'new operating system' and as a result really should be distributed free to all Vista users, because it is not fair to charge for a product that has bugs and then charge again to 'upgrade' it to a version that actually works. But that is a bit off topic I fear.
The reason I am posting again is to report the result of my conversion. Turns out the movie was about 2:45 long and the conversion took about 1:45. The size was picked based on the original movie, and everything worked well--except that the soundtrack is just a little bit skewed. This is a common problem when converting between formats but it is an exceptionally irritating one.
Bottom line: nice program, and I will probably keep it, but there are some problems. Thanks.

FWIW, I uninstalled IE8 from my home computers the day I installed it and rolled back to IE7. IE8 wont work with a web application I need.

You might not be able to use this software after that.
I'm not sure if WINDOWS 7 will stop updatng or STOP working altogether after that date.

Try to also install it on an XP or a VISTA system or otherversion of WINDOWS if you intend to keep this software.

This installed just fine on Windows 7, 64 bit. I'm trying a pretty long conversion just to see It says it will take about an hour and a half, which is pretty close to the length of the movie. I'll be doing some other things at the same time so it will be a fair test.

Smooth install on XP SP3, runs great, tested it with an .avi that I got (very surprisingly) poor results using Format Factory to create a .flv video of. It automatically, after a few steps with a low learning curve, converted it to .flv, .swf, and .html and created a .jpg thumbnail and saved them all in the source folder. The quality on all of them was excellent. It doesn't get any easier then this program. Two thumbs up, and a huge thank you to SourceTec/SoThink and GOTD!!!

#9 Gio,

Thanks for pointing that out. However it is worth noting that a .MP4 container is used for the H264 videos in your method; to get it into the .FLV container offered by Video Encoder you need to use ffmpeg (although Flash Player can play .MP4 also so unless you have a specific need for .FLV you don't need to mess with ffmpeg). I think. This video encoding stuff gives me headaches.

This is comparable to similar apps, easy to use, a fair number of options. Instead of clicking the output links, you can right-click to open the output folder. As with all multimedia apps, it has the potential to mess up some of your codecs/filters; I noticed some changes. Mostly, it uses the rather old ffdshow. It's not clear whether the installer has brains enough to check for some codecs, I skipped some but it said it was installing one I already had, but it didn't. Also includes the optional Sothink FLV Player, same version as the previous SourceTec Sothink giveaways. See #9, Gio, for several other freeware converters with more output options.

Some FYI information regarding finding recently modified items for those using Windows Search 4 and IE8 (I'm using Vista, but some of this may be applicable to XP). The Vista Start Menu shows Recent Items. Like everything else on the Start Menu, you can right-click and Open or Explore for a larger, sortable list. The IE8 History shows not only URLs, but modified local files, even if they weren't accessed via IE8. These will open in IE8 if it handles them, otherwise in their default app. Protected Mode apparently must be off in the Local Intranet Security Zone, which is the default. From Vista Explorer you have access to several types of Recent-item Searches. What I frequently find most useful is the Indexed Locations Search; Explorer must be set to display hidden files and folders. As with most Explorer views, this can be sorted by date. As with all things Microsoft, what does and does not show up in the various lists can be unexpected (and shortcuts may no longer be valid), and of course only things which have been indexed show up in indexed lists.
