@#21 Klem:
Partly agreed.
Yes, Sonicwall sure has a solid hardware firewall, but I am not familiar with their Anti Spam products.
But the biggest problem is that the site you linked to is in hpHosts domain blacklist, so how do I trust the reviews from such site?

@21 nice rant, but you missed the point.....
He said that it would be nice that when you send the report of spam/junk, it would be nice to have a copy in the sent folder, like all other things we send from our email accounts.
if you wanna complain about something, say that Ashraf's summary sucked for that point.... but the review was solid about what he actually said, not you and your rash assumptions

I use Mail.com (webmail) which rarely (less than a couple a month) lets spam slip by. I stay away from Windows Outlook and email.
I am looking forward to tomorrows offering ;-).

Mailwasher has been doing the job for me for years.

I have been using Spam Bully www.spambully.com/ for years. It has a great bayesian filter, that keeps up all the new types of spam.

There is no foolproof way to prevent spam while be totally sure that the spam filter will not make a mistake and send one of your legit mail to the washer. The war against spam is a losing battle so might as well live with it.

continuing #26 - worked fine on my wife's 32 bit computer, other than the register now/buy me at start up. I'm running 64 bit, so the software obviously does not support me - and I don't see any additional link for 64 bit above.

There is an alternate method to spam control. GMail, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail have strong anti-spam on their systems. Protecting one's primary address by using an alternate is sound practice. I use Yahoo forwarding to my primary email address and do spam management within my Yahoo account.

I installed this, but the people allowed list was not populated from my windows contacts. Is there a way to do this after install? I tried re-installing, but it still did not add the email addresses to the list. I'm using windows mail. Does this only work for outlook and outlook-express(Non-Vista)?

# 18 Klem. Who ever you are. You have absolutely no right to a personal attack on Ashraf. He has been producing some of the best software reviews which are lucidly written. And if you did not understand the meaning of "Sent" Folder in his review. It referred to the challenge e-mails being sent by the software. Damn it

I wonder if it's free or not? Looks like a few people are also getting Free Trial. I wanted to check dayly report, but it says Not available in Free Trial??? What other features are disabled in this giveaway version?

I agree with Klem - as an IT Company, SonicWall have a rock-solid reputation. I have not used this product, as I prefer using Norton 360. I do not see much point in trying out another Security product, however excellent it might be - running two Security products at the same time queers up your PC!

I have been using SpamBrave which is free with Outlook Express and it works just great.

@#1 Ashraf
WHY in the world would any piece of anti-malware software report incoming spam/junk in the SENT folder???? THat makes no sense whatsoever. Unless you're the one sending the spam. Incoming rogue mail should be quarantined in 'Deleted items' or its own subfolder there.
This is froM SONICWALL. DO YOU have any clue whatsoever who that is or what they do??? SonicWall produces some of the best and most professional hardware firewalls/firmware in the business, and the SonicOS (their operating platform) is second only to (arguably) Cisco IOS...it's bulletproof. Some IT/Security experts like it better than IOS.
In short, I can't believe this software would be anything except five-star excellent. You have absolutely no street cred in the security software realm and should really stay away from these kinds of "reviews" until you know what you're talking about ... you're leading a lot of people who don't know any better down the primrose path to big computer problems. Your usual misinformed twaddle is somewhat entertaining, but in this case you're just dangerous. What a joke.

Unfortunately, I no longer use such email clients, as they clog up my PC with the amount if email I get, so I did not try this one.
However, for anyone that does download their email to their desktop and misses this giveaway today, a good free option (and always free) for those who still use Outlook, Thunderbird (or even the old Netscape version), Incredimail, etc. is Spamihilator, which has a learning mechanism and is a great program. It will also work with any email client on the system.

I've been using Spamfighter for several years now. It works so well I paid for the pro version so it doesn't say on the bottom of my outgoing emails that I'm using Spamfighter, etc. http://www.spamfighter.com
It puts spam in a seperate directory in my email inbox so I can spot check before deleting until it's 'trained'. I can unblock what I want and doesn't affect any incoming emails from anyone in my address book.

BEST FREE ALTERNATIVE (probably even better than today's giveaway):

I've also used Mailwasher for years. If I get suspicious emails from, say Paypal, the preview shows the links and I can see that it's not actually from that company. I also use it to read a lot of emails, like notices from Facebook. I can then delete it without having to download it.

installs a trial version, no key.. will trial it (but I doubt it will be compatible with outlook 2010 which sadly our office is a beta site for).
challenge will send from your main email address, not each email account.. so if your main on is fred@here.com then all challenges will be sent from postmaster@here.com... this will enable spammers to send tons of emails to names@here.com, not a good item really.
I personally don't use challenge, its either spam or not .. simple..

Happy to say, I use gmail, and have many of these features already built in.

A free alternative with bayesian filter (learning ability), support for unlimited POP accounts, free updates, etc is Popfile. It also runs in the Intranet of your small company as long as it has internet connection. It's implemented as a proxy server, thus installation is not as easy as any webwasher client-only software.

Good day. In the 6 months I've been coming here, there's been lots of worthwhile—& occasionally valuable programs—offered for free. However, SonicWALL Anti-Spam Desktop seems worthwhile only as a FREE add-on, or as something built into the only (Microsoft) email clients it claims to work with: Outlook, Outlook Express or Windows Mail.
In fact, what is there included in SWASD that isn’t already included in these email clients (or as in many of the anti-malware programs these days—including the abundant free ones); i.e. in my free email accounts like msn.com, it has a spam filter, with the option of marking it as “phishing scam” (though I don’t know if Microsoft actually investigates these, or merely puts it there to make us supposedly feel better, or more secure, or whatever…).
So, to the developers, please let us know why on earth we should download this software (& at 20 MBs!!), and how to justify paying for this if it were not free today at GOTD (so thanks to GOTD-- as always), let alone shelling out $29.95 (unless it comes with a $30 rebate)!!!
Regards,
Al

@7 (Dean). I use Thunderbird for my POP, but it is limited anti-spamming. IT certainly works (often too well) but it learns. I pick my mail up off one of the popular html/pop providers so the host mail filters, then t-bird filters and I usually get very little. But that is just the spam aspect! The offering today, is more rich. Perhaps your mail or internet provider offers pop. But, the offering today uses only the Microsoft products--maybe a suggested alternate would work, for you.
Finding an antispam for html seems.,., well difficult. That responsibility would fall on the mail provider since none of the mail is processed on your PC. Most of the popular html mail providers have some anti-spam and will allow filters. But spammers learn rules and write more spam.
Save | Cancel
@ #7 What do you mean by "compatible with HTML"?
If you are referring to web-based mail such as GMail, Yahoo Mail etc then you are out of luck. The anti-spam software needs to run on the server, not on your PC.

Surely anyone interested in preventing spam is already using Mailwasher. It's the market leader for one very good reason - it's the best.
Whilst the freebie MW only lets you protect one mail account, the paid-up version is infinitely more versatile than today's offering and there's a new release of MW due out very soon. No contest.

A Micro$oft-only tool when the European Union has just obtained that the M$ email programs are not bundled any more with each version of Windows is a nonsense.
I suggest using MailWasher. It can "learn" how to distinguish SPAM from your junk emails, a really interesting feature. The free version works with only one email address, but it works really well, and with all email programs!

I use Mailwasher which is a free spam filter that works independently from your mail client and so works with any mail client

According to the developers website the software is Client-based anti-spam and anti-phishing, They need to re-phrase that to say "MICROSOFT Client-based anti-spam and anti-phishing"
They need to address the fact that there are lots more Email Client software available which are not from Microsoft
