And I want to thank Angela #25 and therube #44 for talking about the program specifics. Which overall does sound good, but a tad less sophisticated than the two Biz Card programs mentioned, Designer and MX. Spring Publisher mentioned is apparently far weaker. If I was not already happy with my owned CAM I would have given this a download.

When I installed, after a bit of messing around trying to find a place to put the MSI file, it installed okay, but it opens with a New Project already set up -- and THAT's the problem with "registering". If you click that OFF, then you can activate the Registration button, top right. I don't know why the makers would make it harder than it ever needs to be -- they should look into that!

Hi,

Helen, the two biz card programs I considered, after some search and play, were Mojo, Business Card MX mentioned by Frank, and, the one I use, Business Card Designer Plus from CAM Development http://www.camdevelopment.com/designer/business_card/ .

I recommend a dedicated biz card program if you plan to do various tweakings, print out on different color card stock, etc. There is a mild learning curve with any good program, trying to figure out the best way to adjust layouts and such. Since it is a bit tricky, better to start with a solid program that will not have frustrations. (However, I have not loaded SlimPublisher, but it is not a dedicated biz card program.0

Nice little program, be advised it takes a few seconds to start and gives no indication it's in the process of doing so. I had 4 sessions running by the time I realized it!! lol Thanks for the nice program I will recommend it to my friends!

I am confused. Slimpublisher appears to be a different program than spring publisher. Can someone clarify why they think these programs are the same?

Thanks,

you can actually change your ruler preferences on your documents by right-clicking on the ruler. Your options will include: pixel, cm (therefore mm), and inches. Hope this helps.

Easy installation on Win7x64 and on XP. Haven't yet tried it yet but I have a couple observations:

I don't like a desktop icon created without permission; this is unlikely to be a frequently-needed program so I'd personally just run it from the Start menu. That icon was immediately deleted.

I find it somewhat irritating when one closes a program and gets an "are you sure you want to exit?" box. No, I clicked the red X for my health!

We'll see how the actual program behaves...

Thanks Rajesh and Terry! #35 & 41. I was having the exact same problem. My went to c:\ and I found it there. A screwy way they set that up but I got it to install with no prob. Using Win 7 64 and Win 8 Dev.

I have used another program extensively to create business cards and labels for my products. That was Microsoft's Photodraw, which used to be included in perhaps office. That program is great, however has many more options and a fairly steep learning curve.

This program installed on Win7 (64) and runs fine. It is fairly simple to use.

That business card maker is damn near 90 megabytes! I don't need all of the pre-built cards they send with it in the download. I want a basic "start from scratch" business card maker.

@Karen Stavert, I had the same issue. Windows 7 64-bit. When the program asks you where to extract the files upon installing, browse and put it in a folder that you will remember. Then you will see a file called "slimpublisher2.msi" in that same folder, double click THAT file and the install will begin. After that I had no issue, launching and registering. This was very different from any previous installs I have done from GAOTD.com. Very weird. Hope that helps! Other than the trickiness of the install, I do believe I will enjoy this program.

This GAOTD is unlike most, in that the Setup program only extracts the installer. Your task (should you decide to continue with the adventure) is to find the installer that was extracted.

The installer is called slimpublisher2.msi

The first thing to do is look at the windows when you run the setup program. There is a WinRAR window that tells you where it is putting the installer. That's a good place to start looking for it. :-P

As I recalled, it defaulted to "C:\". That isn't a terribly good place for most people. Your desktop might be easier. Just hit the "browse" button and select Desktop.

That's the hard part. Once you can find the slimpublisher2.msi file (which may look like just slimpublisher2 if you haven't told Windows to stop hiding things from you) it installs very easily.

Once installed, start the program from the Start button (if it isn't already running). The "register" button is in the upper right, next to the "help topic" button. If you can't see "help topic" you probably can't register. Close the window labeled "new" and it will be easier to get to the buttons and menus. If you can see the "help topics" button but no "Register" button, congratulations. You don't have to register it.

When you start the program, there's a "New" dialog box/window in the middle. Close that and you can get to the rest of the program.

If your screen resolution is set very low, you will not be able to see the right-hand side of the program's window, which is where the "registration" button is located. If your screen resolution is that low, you probably won't be able to do much with the program anyway. On the other hand, if you are clever, open Notepad and make a file named branch_lic.lic in %appdata%\SpringPublisher. Paste the license code into the notepad document, and save. Make sure Notepad doesn't add a hidden ".txt" filename extension to the filename. That should work. (I haven't tested it, YMMV.)

If your screen resolution doesn't let you see the right-hand side of the program's window, and you don't know about %appdata% and the other things above, you might just want to skip this giveaway. Sorry.

XP SP3
version 2.3.0

uses an MSI installer (which i don't care for)

installs to directory of your choice
uses .NET

program itself is only one file, SpringPublisher.exe, 1.6 MB
otherwise the MSI installer adds 500 KB to \WINDOWS\Installer\

registration is simple with the given code

looks like this is geared to design; business cards, letterheads,
postcards or flyers

resizeable window

(i did NOT read the book)

created a business card, simple & looks good

would think (& don't know if it can?) you should be able to set up templates with name, addr, ... & have it automatically populate say from business card to letterhead (based on fields). that would save you from having to copy/paste.

would be nice if ESC worked as a Cancel

when working on letterhead, i have it blown up to 50% & scrolling is kind of sluggish (on my modest computer)

a "full screen" option would be nice. such that only the editor itself would remain, with the "menu" items hidden

similarly, it has a "fit to view", but no "fit width", which would come in handy

without knowing what to expect, having never used a program like this, have to say it works well, does what it says

I was instructed to uninstall and do a reinstall.

I opened YourUninstaller and the program wasn't
in there.

I used control panel and the program wasn't there either.

I have searched program files and program (86) files
and it is nowhere to be found...

I did another search of the computer and the files show
up but not the installed program

yet, when I reinstall, a window pops up telling me that
the software is already installed???

I cannot find it anywhere on either computer.

When u first time run the file, just see which path it is being stored, it just extracts the file to some location. U have to locate that file and then u have to run the set up file, now is the time when the software is actually being installed.

I got the point, in some OS (like windows 7 enterprise), the software is auto registered and does not show the register button besides Help command, while some OS (like windows 7 Starter) it shows, so those who dont find any button, please dont be afraid. The application is registered.

I did it on both today so known this idea.

this is absolutely the strangest install experience.

I downloaded, installed... expected the program to
open up.. nothing happened.

I looked on my desktop... not there.

Checked program files... not there..

did a search on my computer and it pulled up the files but
not the program.

A message popped up, asking if the software had correctly
installed... I hit "no" and it reinstalled..

On reinstallation, a message popped up, informing me
that the software was already installed... I installed
over the first...

Went through this whole process two more times...

Still can't find the software anywhere on two computers?????

Thanks. It looks decent enough. I could not see any animation as for Microsoft Powerpoint which is sad. However, it is still OK. I prefer Scribus which is Open Source and completely free. It is not as light, but there is no comparison. And it is just as good, if not better than Serif. And you don't need to register anywhere which is greatly appreciated!

To all people having difficulty registering this programme this may help:

If you have already installed and registered a previous GOTD offering called 'SpringPublisher Pro' which was available last month, today's programme called SlimPublisher 2.3 will not show the registration tab but will have automatically registered.

Click on the link at comment 14 for more info.

SlimPublisher 2.3 seems to be similar to SpringPublisher Pro with the addition of the 'Insert Map' tab please a few other tweaks.

Installed and registered easily enough.

Very simple, basic program. However, a bit to basic for my liking.

GUI looks childish to me.

The measurements are only available in inches, but I would prefer millimetres.

Image sizing is in pixels, but for printed material, the option of physical measurements would be more useful.

The positioning is done by reference to the % of the page - again, a position using physical measurement would be more useful.

When altering the size of an element, there is no way to keep the aspect ratio: meaning that, unless you want the image/element skewed, you will need to get the calculator out.

IMO, it is fine to knock up something very simple and basic quickly, but not for any real design work.

Installed and registered, win7\64 ok, I had to go to the extracted location and start the installer maybe a little confusing for the noobs. Created a bus card very quickly. The ui is pretty good. Seems so many ui's now days are a cluster ____! One con so far, the card I made was a test did not need to save it but when I closed the program it asked do you really want to close? But no option to save my work and it did not save it. An option to save before closing would be great other than that I like it very much! TU for the give as I do think it's worth $25
