#19............A commenter mentioned that a “plus” of this program is its ability to import from Quicken. Makes no sense. If you’re using Quicken already, there’s NO reason to consider a dinky little program like this!

We are not using Quicken, this is just how our bank allows download of their records.

It is a plus.

This is a great tool for a small business. I have been in busines for 30 years and have always kept handwritten accounts. This is great for being able to see instantly how much I spend on different things: tools, machinery, precious metals, shipping, etc. You can do categories and sub-categories, so I can see, for instance, how much I spend on gold, as opposed to platinum or silver. Also how much I earn selling items as opposed to lecturing or consulting. I won't be using it for budgeting--I just need it for expenses and sales. Perfect! Nice and simple. And it is extremely flexible to set up the way that suits you if you bother to really explore the program (read all the documentation before you decide what it can and can't do)!

It's a great shame Microsoft dropped their own Money finances program, perhaps MS were afraid people would realize exactly how much MS software was costing them!

This seems a great replacement! Well done GOTD!

This is great peace of software for it's price and there's a lot of people with no complex finances they'll find use of it. Software is JUST FINE and we should thank both GAOTD and developer.

WE are not fine..

I'd like to ask some of you- to ask yourselves if you actually know where you are when you're posting here after free download/s.. How's that possible that people with a "big businesses" miserably sit like coyotes waiting to download here for free and then blatantly insult the developer and/or GAOTD sometimes.. And I'm not talking about suggestions or critics but low profile ironic brain blasts I saw many times here.. This is my first time to post here and I've done it not to defend the developer or GAOTD but for clearly personal reasons, AND for your granddaughter Mr. Mitchel Preston. This website is God given for all of those granddaughters who are babysitting while their GRAND-grandfathers rotate sums they simply cannot count anymore.. Sorrow and bitterness vs bottom profile and misery.

Giovanni, I guess Italy is still a "man's world" but in other countries a lot of "housewives" do the budgeting, balance checkbooks and so on. In fact, I would bet that it is mostly women who do all that stuff in their families. So please, do not belittle women (especially housewives!)

RQ Money is not freeware - it's a donationware. When it's database holds more than 2000 records the program turns off autobackup and shows donationware window each time you start the program.

There is a really free alternative that licensed under the GPL - MoneyManagerEX
(http://www.codelathe.com/mmex/)

- multi currency
- AES base encryption
- Reminders for recurring Bills and Deposits
- Does not require an install. Can run from a USB key.
- International language support (Available in 24 languages)
- Import data from any CSV format, QIF [ Microsoft Money ]
- Printing, Exporting to HTML, CSV, QIF
- Non-Proprietary SQLite Database
...
and so on

Regards

Simple is beautiful.
Any money tracking software requires the user to have the discipline to actually record and key in the entries consistently over time.
The idea is to record roughly how much you spent, when and on what items. So you can control your expenses.
No need for multiple accounts.
Actually no need to bother with the Income part.
Just use to track Expenses.
Keep the categories to a few, so it does not overwhelm you.
Although it has ability to create a pie chart of expenses by categories, I don't need such feature.
It can import bank statement? I don't need this.
I hate double entry. That's why I like this.
Don't count beans to exacting microscopic detail - Get a life.
This is just to give you a rough idea where your money is going when you look back over several months or a year; and a rough check whether you are over-spending.
Had written my own Excel worksheet for such purpose that works well because it was custom tailored. But I like the simplicity of this GOTD software.

There are other programs that FAR exceed this in features, power and usefulness. And many of them are FREE, always. This program is just a bit too basic to be of much use. If you're a complete bonehead (no offense) at managing your money, this MIGHT help...a little. But, if you have even the most basic money-management moxy, you'll actually find this limiting I think.
A commenter mentioned that a "plus" of this program is its ability to import from Quicken. Makes no sense. If you're using Quicken already, there's NO reason to consider a dinky little program like this!
Another commenter said people starting out will want the simplicity of this program. I strongly believe two things; ONE, it's very hard to truly manage money without being able to budget, just keeping a list of spending is NOT enough. TWO, you "start" out with a dinky program and you get into the habit of using it, and a more effective, powerful program you will likely pass on because it will seem "too difficult" If you're going to learn, go ahead and learn on something that gives you all the tools. And to add, many more powerful programs are free always, not just with they cycle around on GAOTD.

PASS ON THIS!

People, (and you know who you are)...nobody but you cares to hear if you think you're too smart for a certain offering, or to whatever reason why you think an offering is a waste of your time. The reason why you should be coming to this site and using these programs is simple: because you appreciate the free flow of ideas and wish to help in the development of products that may one day become refined enough to be worth good money. Don't forget, you are being invited to participate in the testing of these products, and in the meantime, are being allowed to avail yourselves of them for free. Someone out there put a lot of time and effort into building something and is now asking you for your help. If you don't want to offer it, don't offer it. But don't use your anonymity as license to be a jackass and dump all over someone's efforts. Have some respect and a little bit of common decency.

If, however, you do feel the need to opine upon a particular piece of software, keep your comments simple and constructive. Both for the developers, and for those of us who appreciate the value of something free.

Simply ensure that you answer these few basic questions, and nothing more:

1. Were there any problems during installation? (run errors, virus alerts, etc.)

2. Did you experience any errors or glitches while using the software?

3. IYHO, was the software user-friendly? Did it look professional and was it easy to navigate?

4. Is it worth the price that's being asked? If not, why? (this one might be tricky because most developers are looking for honest, constructive feedback)

Know what I mean? I don't care about babysitting...I care about whether my computer is going to explode if I install one of these freebies. Some of us can only afford the one.

LOL...no offense meant but today's giveaway looks good for children, pensioners and housewives only (==> too BASIC!!).

And it's definitely not worth its price, especially when compared to this amazing FREE APP (yeah dudes, you heard me right ==> FREE...LOL!!) I stumbled upon a few weeks ago:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Finances-Business/NolaPro.shtml

As you can see, this awesome web-based ERP tool includes AP, AR, Payroll, Order Tracking, Inventory Control, POS, B2B and even an Ecom Shopping Cart, as well as tons of plug-ins and add-ons aimed at performing a small business internal audit.

From order management to inventory and point of sale, this program goes far beyond mere accounting.

The last version has improved BANK RECONCILIATION'S HANDLING of CREDIT CARD PAYMENT applied to multiple invoices.

And it can even be customized upon request to fit your company's niche or any business requirement.

How cool is that??

Really a dream program for small businesses accountants and enterprise consultants!!!

Amazing for being a FREE AUDITING TOOL, isn't it??

Another superb FREE accounting app (for professional people only) is definitely Personal Accountant 1.0, as it can cover all the aspects of Accounting Management besides the basic expense receipts record:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Finances-Business/Personal-Accountant.shtml

So I wonder how can a software house charge 12 $ for basic software like this GAOTD if you can grab professional tools, like the ones mentioned above, for FREE!!!

Big MYSTERY!!

Cheers from Italy!!

Unfortunately, Preston (Comment #1), some of us are as stupid as you describe at managing money. On the other hand, I know some extremely intelligent people who have no business holding a hammer or a screwdriver. We all have our failings. I certainly can—and will—use this program.

As a further test I decided to import my bank statements in QIF format, which it did without difficulty. Very rapidly a view of my spending habits emerged as did the general trend, one heart stopping month turned out to be car expenses.
For people similar to myself, the kind who don't make lists, go into endless detail, the kind who just want a really good overall view of finances, this is a great little program!
Honestly I have no financial interest in this program, cross my heart.

Installed it ( W7/64b) - Installed ok. But now, when I try to Uninstall it, it keeps saying "the program is running - cloce first..etc . But It's not running - chekked the taskmanager program/process - and no its not there. Restart windows - try uninstall - same message.
My W7 works very straigth: No problem at all. But this piece of software is trouble......so far ?

You must be a riot at Dinner Parties.

Some people will want the simplicity because they are just starting out or it is all they need.

I wish many of you would understand the concept of FREE!

(In fact are you sure that you will not benefit from this 'learning' software?)

How to start booking
Agreeing OldScotty I this one is neat and very basic. You can add, edit and delete any booking without any security belt - there is no undo. It will do its work for one's own responsability. And you can start the booking by any transaction, even by inputting an expense at first without any start balance needed at first. If you want to have a positive starting balance, you should issue an income transaction, category could remain unknown, and then the beauty of the program unfolds. It is quick and simple. More was not promissed, and therefore it is a keeper for those who don't want to book in different accounts or currencies, and do not have such a tool until now.

Simple to install and activate, and on running an equally simple but well designed interface.
I like the ability to name your own categories and that any notes you make are easy to recall, just go to the transaction.
The overview graph and pie chart give useful information in a simple fashion, it is a very pleasing piece of software at a realistic price.
You could easily get a handle on your expenses and costs etc., but as Trucker #2 states it takes a lot of user input, as do all.
I've tried a few programs of this type, I've even tried to write one but none have been as simple and useful as this particular piece of software, well worth the download.

I prefer RQ Money! It is portable, freeware and it allows budget management, multiple currencies, reports, data exporting, searching and graphs. The data (which can be password-protected) is stored into an SQLite database.

Video tutorials are exceedingly inefficient and a huge time waste; avoid them at all costs. The web is replete useless streams of poorly conceived "help" clips. If you do fall into that trap designed for lazy users who desire entertainment over knowledge, always include a transcript along with searchable text guides (help files) for those who have more education than fifth grade.....

GAOTD has the price listed at $12.47 but the developers site has the price listed at: $24.95, $29.95 and $39.95.

In either case, this program is OK for those that are beginning in their budgeting adventures and needs a "learners permit" to the world of budgeting. In my opinion, if you have an updated version of Excel, you can get a Budget Template from the Microsoft Template Library which offers better organization.

While the program does offer some good details and breakdowns of your cash-flow (both income and expenses), the whole GUI is a bit on the cluttered side.

Overall rating from 1-5: 3

It appears that you can only record transactions on one account. This is far too basic. I cannot see why people would choose this in preference to Microsoft Money Plus sunset edition which is now free.

For tracking expenses i use GnuCash.
From website description "GnuCash is personal and small-business financial-accounting software, freely licensed under the GNU GPL and available for GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows."

Todays offer is a money viewer/edit tool... and believe it or not, but you can save some money today, only, if you download this software now !

Pros:
- Good for those who don´t have Excel or similar programs
- Easy to install and work fine on Win7 64-bit
- Choose your own language inside the program
- Import a bank statement (Quicken, MSMoney, CSV...)
- Add/delete categories and lock the DB with a password

Cons:
- A lot of data to write into the program
- Todays offer is only the Standard version
- First time run show you a 15% off sign
- Scanner/smartphone interface for easy and fast input of data

Conclusion
The idea behind this type of software is usefull for many people. The downside of the program is that it need a lot of input and you´re the only one to do it ! If there was an option for a flatbed scanner/smartphone picture reading interface then would more people perhaps like to buy software like this one !

Nice interface, great personal finance programme if you want to manage a single account in a single currency. Missing multiple accounts, as offered by many other money management accounts such as Ace Money Lite. Also missing budgeting. Bill payment for regular recurring transactions is good, nut no support for one-off payments.

Allows you to import downloaded bank statements, which can also be used to import transactions from other programmes.

OK programme, fairly priced.

Advice to developer is change the name to Simpleton Money Manager. Why? Your software is a little too simple to be of much use. On second thought, I might recommend it to my teenage granddaughter as a way to learn managing the finances of her babysitting business.
