I began to have problems recording to 12seconds, and Brizzly. After uninstalling this product, I was able to use those services...

How do you record both the audio on the computer, and the audio on the mic, and another thing, how do you disable the hardware accelerators on vista? Some guys say its not possible, but when I record gameplay, I get the black and white flicker. These are my only problems, but otherwise, this program is great and it does its job.

Thanks to some of the comments on here, I solved the problem with device manager... just had to update the driver by locating and then referencing the already downloaded file. The program seems to work fine now. Thanks.

Installed but when I start it up, I get a message about a required driver that wasn't installed, and how to correct the error.

However, I can still run the program to take still captures of the screen.

If I want to record what I do on the screen - which is why I wanted this program - the program either crashes when I press the record button, or records but then tells me it can't stop recording when I press the stop record button.

Regrettably, correcting the error seems like it will require an uninstall - as the installer doesn't have a "fix the previous installation" option - and I won't be able to activate after.

In sum, I was happy to learn of this offering because it was something I needed but it has turned out to be a disappointment.

Two months ago, after looking at several programs to make screencast tutorials about software of interest to professional writers, I found ScreenCamera to have many useful features at the best-value price. I actually PAID for it. And I'm happy. There's another more powerful program, but I don't want to pay $300 for it.

Mind you, this program is not a do-it-all solution. For people just wanting to capture a streaming video, I'm sure there are better programs. By the way, #15, the best program I've found for capturing YouTube video is VideoGet, which will even convert from flv to mpg2, playable on my big flat-screen TV.

To comments 8, 24, 26, 31, 35

Uninstall Screen Camera then reinstall BUT when doing so, look for the last installation window where it has a tick box asking to start the program.

DON'T tick it! Close the installation FIRST then click the Activation!

Try running the progam now.You may well have to find it under
PCHand Screen Recorder and or PCHand Screen Capture.

For those who got a message “failed to connect please try again later”
This may be a solution.
I have to assume you are using Firefox or anything other than Internet Explorer, BUT you have Internet Explorer on your computer.

Try running Internet Explorer and check that it is NOT set to "work offline" especially if you rarely or don't actually use it. Getting it to back on line, fixed the problem for me when I experienced the problem of failing to connect.

Vista home premium 32-bit SP2: the "driver" is not loaded because it is "unsigned". The "help" info says:

Start > Control Panel > System > Open the Hardware Tab > Click the 'Driver Signing' button > Select the 'Warn - Prompt me each time to choose an action' > Click OK > Re-install ScreenCamera.

I cannot find such a button on Vista -- the closest is ctl pnl -> system -> advanced system settings -> advanced tab... but there is no "driver signing" button.

Device manager shows that the driver is disabled since it was not loaded because it is "unsigned".

So, as far as I can tell, this will not work on vista.

Downloaded and installed no problem. However, when ScreenCamera is launched, it sees and records infinite images of the screen (the mirrors in the barbershop effect). I tried disabling hardware acceleration with no effect, but that's for a blank screen. I tried both ways with the transparency setting, and that does not make a difference either. Any help appreciaed. Windows XP MCE2005 here. Thanks.

Regarding the many questions/comments about recording audio, it is not a simple yes/no answer. With many new laptops, this offer is useless if you are requiring audio.

I tried this program on my newish laptop and sure enough-----no audio ( as I expected ). However, the video quality in playback was superb but jerky as cpu was constantly running near to 100% when using the program. At the time I was using Acronis Try and Decide which may have been the reason for the high cpu when using this program. So for me, everything worked as advertised, but without audio ( no fault of the developer ), Screen Camera is useless for me. Thanks all the same.

After a re-boot, Screen Camera is gone. I have another solution which suits me perfectly:----

There have been some comments regarding " IS THERE ANY PROGRAM THAT RECORDS SOUND AND VISION FROM THE DESKTOP? " Yes , and I have used it for a long time. http://www.applian.com/replay-video-capture/ It overcomes the issues many people have with new laptops and sound cards etc. This is not a replacement for the offer here today on gotd but to answer the above question. It is able to make High Quality Video from ANYTHING Playing on Your PC and that includes audio!!!.

Program OK and performs well, now installed!

A lot of people seem to be asking how to record from the desktop. In order to do this, you need to set your audio mixer recording settings from Mic to "What U Hear" or similar.

If you have a built-in audio adapter, and not a separate audio card, you may not have this option with Windows Vista and later OS. Microsoft has asked manufacturers to remove this setting from their drivers, at least according to posts on the Sound Blaster support message boards. I suspect this is to avoid copyright issues, similarly to how they removed off-line browsing from IE.

Solution: get an addon audio adapter, either internal or USB, that has "What U Hear" recording source available in the Vista drivers.

Ahh, wonderful; I've been awaiting the rerun of this for a while.

ScreenCamera really is quite a fantastic piece of software. It provides many options for how you want to record your screen (just a window, entire screen, etc.)

But by far the thing that I like most about this software, is that unlike numerous others of the same kind, this one won't leave trails of your mouse cursor as the frames progress.

Thanks for offering this piece of software again, GAOTD.

Cheers,
Marc

To #25 (Gary): I had the same problem and found this in the forums. I changed the IE setting and the problem was solved.

From BuBBy (Administrator): as a quick check - is your Internet Explorer working ok - can you open http://giveawayoftheday.com/ using IE?

If it is set to work offline and you didn't notice because you use Firefox or Opera to surf the net - Activation will fail with a connection error. So Check that IE is ok and can connect to the download page.

To #17, who said, "I aborted the instal. It wanted to access my hard drive. I didn’t like what all it wanted from my computer."

Maybe you better forget about ALL software then. Because that's the PURPOSE of a hard drive, to store applications and data.

Also, beware that some applications will also attempt to access your MONITOR. You may wish to turn it off to prevent this.

Installed just fine on both my Vista and Win7 machines. Works flawlessly for me. Those that are only seeing the 21 day free trial, did you click the activate while having the program closed. I did that and it installed fine. Works perfect. And yes it records sound as well as video. Thumbs up GAOTD on something I can actually use a lot!!

I installed (Windows Vista) and then got a device driver error message. It says the device driver is missing. When I attempt to record, screen camera crashes. Device Manager in Control Panel shows driver is missing.

Then the Screen Driver help file for fixing this says:

To solve the problem, go to:

Start > Control Panel > System > Open the Hardware Tab > Click the 'Driver Signing' button > Select the 'Warn - Prompt me each time to choose an action' > Click OK > Re-install ScreenCamera.

What's the "Driver Signing button"? Yeah, I checked the drivers and it has the yellow exclamation showing the problem.

I set the Stereo Mix as the Default Device for sound as the USER GUIDE suggested.

I reinstalled ScreenCamera and still it is not working.

I deleted my 1AV CENTER and Screen Camera install and then reinstalled ScreenCamera again. No luck.

Now I lost 1AV Center from my previous install this past year and today GAOTD does not install.

The HELP instructions and USER GUIDE did not solve this problem.

UNINSTALLED. NOT HAPPY.

actualy quite good it records live video streams (and so has the ability to get round DRM, copy protection etc). #2 yes it does record sound.

Here's a link to 39 seconds of streaming video that was recorded at 320x240 at 24 fps. The original video was 21 megs. It is a keeper for me

ScreenCamera might work OK for/with webcams -- I'll leave that to those who use webcams a lot more than I -- but I found it's mediocre used only as a screen capture app. You're given your choice of 4 formats, none customizable, made up of avi compressed/uncompressed, & 2 quality levels of wmv. Video source can be your desktop or available sources -- I was given the option to use either of my 2 TV tuner cards for example, & if you have one hooked up when you run the app, you can use a webcam. For audio you similarly select a source -- it defaulted to my soundcard. [Note that many systems, especially laptops have recording speaker/headphone output disabled, probably as a means of DRM. If that's the case, you need to change that (sometimes possible) or add hardware &/or drivers before anything will record the sound you can hear.]

I couldn't get avi capture to work, but other than following the help file's suggestion of disabling audio capture, I didn't bother trying to diagnose the problem. Wmv gave me captures at 4300 - 5000 Kbps, 24 fps progressive video, 192 Kbps [48 KHz 16 bit] audio, at high quality, when set to 30 fps. Low quality dropped to ~400 Kbps. While you can choose the overall frame size of your captures, some of the more common sizes like 720 or 1080 for HD are not listed -- many folks do screen capture to show on a TV, so I thought it odd the 2 HD sizes they'd most likely use are absent. Tested/monitored in XP Pro SP3 32, playing video was not captured, cursor movement was captured a bit erratically [not smooth], & the cursor itself flickered a bit with the app running. [using the latest drivers from Logitech] On the plus side, CPU use was relatively low compared to a conventional video capture app [like VirtualDub] using the free unreal screen capture driver [10 - 40% vs. much closer to 100% for 1080p video screen capture with V/Dub], & all 4 cores were used. Install, & especially uninstall could be better.

ScreenCamera uses Installshield for setup, & a copy of the setup files are copied to the Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information folder -- those along with 1 driver, 2 system files, the driver's .inf file, & the program's folder are not removed when you uninstall. The system files are: BSwitch.ax & PCWinSoftBar.ocx - the driver is: SCRCAMHRDRV.sys. Registry impact isn't too bad -- recorded stats are misleading this time with a lot of entries deleted & then re-created -- but I'm concerned when an install modifies values in System Certificates &/or Licenses &/or Group Policy... Another app (or apps) may not like the modified value, Plus, uninstall might be expected to remove registry entries, not restore them to whatever they were before. Setup also unpacked but didn't use a .NET install file [.NET is already installed], though it isn't included in the requirements at the top of the GOTD page.

I have downloaded and tried several of the 1AV products and this is, as usual, overall a pretty good program. It does what it says, but its a shame it doesn't do more.

For starters, when I open it, there is a large white area outside the control center that looks like was missed in the transparency. The same white area also shows up around the small preview window. Grabbing a corner and resizing the preview window 'snaps' it to a new size removing the white area, but there is no way to fix this on the control center ( ). More importantly, it doesn't have output sizes larger than 1680x1024, and that just doesn't work for 1900x1080, for true 1080 HD - something I prefer to record in.

One thing that just confuses me is that if you grab and stretch the preview window to the maximum size, there are 4 buttons that show up - "New, Add, Del, Edit". I've tried everything and they really don't seem to do anything that I have found yet.

I already have an earlier version of ScreenCamera from GAOTD and thought I'd get this newer version.

I'm using a Vista 32 bit machine.

First the zip file downloaded with IE8 was empty, so I downloaded with Safari.

Then, when I ran the setup file, I got:

32-bit True Color is required.
Go to Start/Control Panel/Video/Settings/Colors and set Colors to 32 bits

But when I go to Start/Control Panel - there is no "Video", so I can't get to Settings/Colors.

I have looked under various other options but found nothing.

Considering it is a Vista 32 bit system, I would have thought it would already be set to 32 bits. And also considering the previous version installed with no problems.

I then opened up the existing version, which offered me a free update. When I tried it, I got exactly the same error message.

Trying to find the video settings in the existing version, it tells me that the video device is not connected, even though it shows up in Skype if I select it.

I'm beginning to think I may have to give up on Screen Camera.

Downloaded fine, installed fine and activated without a problem. However, when I opened it is automatically was recording and when I tried to stop recording I got a not very helpful error message that said "cannot stop recording." I had to close the program.

This just happened twice. I now have it opened (and recording) a third time, but I'm going to (gasp) read the manual and see if it offers any advice. I hope it does because I have been looking for something like this (It sounds just like Screenflow for the Mac) for a while.

@acr #2 "I have not been able to find whether this can record audio from the desktop (not from a mic). Would anyone know?"

SAME QUESTION HERE... and more...

My first post here got lost somewhere -because of suggesting that screenrecording software might be used to record video+audio streams that are subject to POSSIBLE copyright laws or regulations and suggesting a "workaround" that everyone knows(and mentionning two public televisionstations who, even though paid by taxpayers money, seem not to be so openminded as to make their newsflashes downloadable)?

No offence or bad intent meant, though.
So no further discussion about that subject here.

Dowloaded and installed fine on Win XP SP2, but froze up my machine a couple of times trying it out.
I doubt if it will be a keeper for me, but I'll do some further testing first. If it keeps freezing my system...

The question however remains: IS THERE ANY PROGRAM THAT RECORDS SOUND AND VISION FROM THE DESKTOP?

Today's GAOTD obviously does not...

Greetz.
