I had the same problem. I found it was the "Real time protection" scanning Windows temporary file used by program to install in my anti-virus which was the culprit. I temporarily disabled it and it completed installation.
Maybe your AV has the same protection.

OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is the best freeware I have found for capturing videos off the screen. www.obsproject.com. I have not used the "broadcast" feature and only use it for capturing videos. Get it from the obsproject.com website and not from soureforge.net because the latter is very persistent about loading crapware along with the program.

A more confusing setup I can't imagine????

Make it REALLY CLEAR how you RECORD
a specific area of your desktop/screen

I selected specific area and it wouldn't let
go of my mouse. I double clicked and the
set area move to somewhere else on my
screen.

I am guessing that I can record something
like a webinar or youtube recording but
can't figure out how .... and, I'm usually
really good at figuring this stuffs out.

If someone can enlighten me today, I
will keep it installed... otherwise, it's
gone

Like the recording option a lot. I rate this a 6 out of 10. Some improvements could make it easier to use. I have been loving the new interface to GAOTD! Much more inviting, brighter colours, less cluttered, and more professional looking!

Program installs a virtual device as screencamera. If you want speed, use avi default compression as outputcontainer. You can compress later and then you have better control over output quality. A nice program to have if you need it. B.t.w. Behind the controlpanel windows there seems to be a rounded rectangle, you can click on the viewable parts of this rectangle to switch the preview panel on/off, or place it above or below the controlpanel.

There is a referral to SnapMyScreen in one of the above comments: that is a program to take snapshots of the screen. Be forwarned: "The SnapMyScreen toolbar offers convenient web search, homepage, and default search." . "Powered by Ask".
I use Greenshot freeware for taking screenshots; more options, and without toolbars (unless you like toolbars).

I find this is a good working program not difficult and a configurability if you want . Nice modern gui. It installs very well in Programs but even gives you the change to make an other choise; takes 14.65 MB ( Win 7Prof), installs 1 new service and 12 new data in system32.

This current giveaway states, that it has a "virtual webcam"! Would this software take the place of my HP Pavilion's webcam, since mine is missing it's driver?

Reply   |   Comment by Bill B.  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-3)

No, it adds a virtual capturing device, the same way as a webcam. Each device will need its own drivers.

This software states, that it has, a "virtual webcam"! My HP Pavilion dv7 Entertainment PC with Windows 7 Home Premium, is missing it's built-in webcam driver, which by the way, is called (yes, my webcam has a name) HP TrueVision HD. Would this software, that has virtual webcam, take the place of my missing webcam driver, virtually? Because, I have looked all over the Internet for the driver, with no success! I even downloaded YouCam for my webcam, but when I did, it stated that, "no webcam detected!
It's like HP never included a driver for it's built-in webcams on the Pavilion dv7's, because my wife's HP Pavilion g7 has a perfectly working webcam!

This particular developer's offerings via GAOTD have, in my own experience, always been bedevilled with faulty registration processes or mis-performing software. I suffered both, the last time I tried anything from PC-Winsoft -- that last instance just happening to be an earlier version of today's giveaway: hours wasted on registration, then repeated failures in the software's performance.

I was going to give Screen Camera 3.1.1 a whirl (and the developer, the benefit of the doubt) because PC-Winsoft makes it abundantly clear on this page that "ScreenCamera is a desktop video recorder and a virtual webcam at a time. It is perfect tool for recording narrated tutorials".

But then as Mike says at post #5, a desktop video recorder it appears not to be. His confusion -- nor mine -- isn't helped by PC-Winsoft's user manual for this software:

http://www.pcwinsoft.com/ScreenCamera/user_guide/index.asp

where the reference is very obviously on simultaneous recording and broadcasting rather than separate recording: after all, you can "broadcast" what you wish, when you wish, where you wish.

Thanks, then, GAOTD, but no thanks: this is a composite commercial software which the developer seems unwilling or unable to explain or justify. The re-install price of $50 is downright ludicrous when the long-established freeware Jing not only seems to do the same thing but its developer takes the trouble to explain that far more cogently:

https://www.techsmith.com/jing.html

As for recording: many, many GAOTDers will have the excellent freeware VLCas one of their media players, so the fact that VLC can act as a video screen recorder may be of interest to them:

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-capturerecord-desktop-video-using-VLC-medi/

whilst this one is an excellent, free, standalone screen recorder:

http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/BBFlashBack_FreePlayer.aspx

WARNING: GAOTDERs may on ay Internet search encounter the highly regarded freeware CamStudio recorder offering. Please AVOID as downloaded executables have been infected with malware and the situation still hasn't been sorted out.

I really don't know what the problem is. Screencamera refers to that the virtual Screencamera device which is installed that records everything that happens on your desktop. That virtual device can be accessed as a capturing device in many programs, like skype. It IS a "desktop video recorder", can't make anything else from it.

MikeR,

Your observation is right on target:
WARNING: GAOTDERs may on ay Internet search encounter the highly regarded freeware CamStudio recorder offering. Please AVOID as downloaded executables have been infected with malware and the situation still hasn't been sorted out.

I'd create a restore point or use this excellent software called Reboot Restore RX before proceeding............Windows: Reboot Restore RX is a free utility that makes restore points and session saves every time you reboot your computer, so if you run into problems, you can restore your system settings to the last time you rebooted and get up and running again quickly.

There's nothing worse than rebooting your computer thinking everything is fine only to find out something's busted and you need to troubleshoot it. It's especially bad if you start having problems after a driver update or a series of Windows updates, and you're stuck trying to figure out which thing caused the problem in the first place. Reboot Restore RX takes the hassle out of it. The app can even restore when Windows won't boot at all.

Our friends at Tekzilla took the app for a spin in the video above, so you can see how it works. The app was originally designed for people who need to manage computers and have to restore to previous sessions every time the machine is rebooted, but it works just as well for personal users who want to keep track of their system changes.

This program is desrribed as "ScreenCamera is a desktop video recorder and a virtual webcam at a time. It is perfect tool for recording narrated tutorials, videos inside web browsers, sharing"

Yet having downloaded and installed it the help Q & A file says
"Q:Can I capture videos with SnapMyScreen?
A:No. SnapMyScreen does not currently support this feature."

Whats going one???

Mike

@Mike: Video capture and desktop/screen capture is not the same! With video capture you will record the stream - that can this tool not. You can take this as video recorder but you capture the desktop/screen and not the file/stream - ok?

I don´t get it, SnapMyScreen is a different program and PCwinsoft does not have a Q&A section on their website . In this gotd there is a helpsection; help... support... and a small Q & A section; your question is not mentioned; "Snapmyscreen" is not mentioned. Searched the whole help file SnapMyScreen is not mentioned anywhere; and why would it be? The GOTD can do the same things as SnapMyScreen.... and a lot more.

You pressed the wrong download button.
SnapMyScreen was an advertisement inside the main windows.
The correct download button is besides the "ticking" clock.

No use for the webcam features of ScreenCamera.Net.
As to the screen recording, Bandicam would be more welcome as a Giveaway.
Still waiting for the repeat of the giveaway of Bandicam on 10 May 2011.

Bandicam is by far the best capture program I have tested; compared today's download with it and it was in a totally different league, not only that but it is cheaper.
If you want to test it there is a free version, watermarks and time limitations, that will give you an idea of just how good it is compared with anything else. Link: -

LOL Don't be such a cheapo. I lost Honeycam and a slew of other GotD programs after I had to reformat my PC a couple months ago. I wound up buying several of the programs/apps to show my support. The Honey and Bandicam bundle was one of the sets I purchased. Same with FolderIco 4 and Wonderfox DVD Ripper Pro.
