Yes, we can update the definitions.
We can not update the software, otherwise we will lose the giveaway license.

Sam, updates of the malware database is free; otherwise the software and all av software are useless. The program itself is not free to update into newer version.

Sam, that means no program executable code updates, and note that is a boiler plate term copy and pasted onto each giveaway even if the vendor does allow minor updates for the duration of an expiring license. malware database is not a program code update but a data file update that leaves the program at the same version number. My question is does this still report many false positive pups... like it always has in the past making it more trouble than it's worth for technicians that have all sorts of 3rd party administrate tools scareware classify as risky or suspicious but are not hacks of the system.

Sam, The application itself will not update to new versions under the free license we're given. This means no new features. However, the malware database definitions should update as long as they remain compatible with the software version we've been given. I hope that makes sense.
