Other than OBS, which is more involved to setup & use, Ashampoo Snap is the only video capture app I'm aware of that lets you choose the video codec used for capture. That's a big deal. You want a fast, efficient encoder, efficient because encoding FHD & higher resolutions takes lots of CPU horsepower, and fast because you have to keep up with the playing video you're capturing. You also want the video to be the highest quality possible, while at the same time you need the encoded video to be small enough that it can be written to disk fast enough to keep up. The defacto default that many [most?] video capture apps use, ffmpeg, isn't necessarily the best choice.

What does SNAP do above and beyond what the Windows Snipping Tool can't do?

I have used SNAP since version 12 and it works great for my purposes. TBH I use OBS for Video, never even tried the Video capture on SNAP. I used Snap extensively for capturing pages of information from online documents that could not be downloaded. It has a timer that captures sequential images so all I needed to do was to set the timer and keep turning the pages. Of all the other capture software I tried, SNAP worked so well I bought it and upgraded it to version 14. Nice to have version 15 for free though the upgrade is cheap.

Looked for help on using the OCR function, as I couldn't find a menu item or entry in 'Tools'. Clicking on Help/Help open up an error page saying: "The page you were looking for doesn't exist."
Not very 'helpful', and not a good start at using this even as a free program...

I have used this and a later edition and find it very useful and easy to use.

I've been using the free version of PickPic, which served my purposes, but thought I'd give this a try. It's good, but with issues...
1. You can't change the hotkey for Prnt Scrn to allow for a dragged selection, it captures the whole screen. You have to use a key combination for a dragged area. A minor complaint but one I've not encountered with similar software.
2. Whenever a video is captured it creates an error message, though the video does get captured, albeit without audio.
3. The OCP function seems completely broken, when asked to select a language it freezes and you have to force end the software.
Bottom line, if you want it for still image captures and don't mind the key combination requirement it's a decent option, certainly for free you're losing nothing by taking it for a spin.

Norman, If you´re in windows and you only need to capture screenshots, microsoft PowerToys might be useful for you.
It has a plethora of options and tweaks, but one of them is just what you are mentioning. tapping the print screen key on your keyboard to capture your screen. It will allow you yo select which area of the screen you want to capture and the image gets saved in jpg or png.
it´s a free native windows app.

I use it only for stills so do not know about the video issue. I use the mouse method so I get the ability to use the mouse to select the rectangle I want. I have not tried to select freehand portions or other shapes.

I made the switch to Snagit. Snap has had a bug if you make use of multiple monitors since version 9 that has never been fixed. Trying to get support for it is just a recipe for frustration.
