Nicely done. Another great utility that is must have for digital photography is Binfer. A nice photo sharing tool to add to the list.

Various products like Topaz Remask, Vertus Fluid mask, Perfect Mask, Perfect Layers, etc. They are all NOT free. Because high quality masking is the holy grail of photo editing. With it you can pull out the subject and change the background entirely. It makes money. Every software developer wants to make the killer software product that eclipses all others in this field. There is intense competition. The return on investment is enormous. There are billions of photographers and many more mobile phone owners who take photos everyday. Whoever achieves this will become super mega rich.

So far none of the software products is "perfect". But the software developers are trying. It is still early days in the product development life cycle of this genre of software.

Just downloaded this. I was looking for something to take backgrounds away. It seems to do the job I was looking for

I've tried this give away several times (about 6), sometimes with complex backgrounds and sometimes with very simple backgrounds. If I were grading this from A to F (A being the best and F being the worst) I would give this a D+ or C-. It does what they say It'll do but it does it very poorly.

I applaud Soft Orbits because they develop decent products. Matter of fact I use some of them but this one is not going to be one of them. Two times the program just stopped and all the work I had done was gone. Unlike XP-man. I don't want a background remover that doesn't finish the job. Photo Scissors is a good and simple program to use, you can start and finish the job without having to move.

I wont keep this one.

is this way different than 'in-paint' which hasn't been mentioned?...unless i missed

Reply   |   Comment by walt  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

The two programs do entirely different jobs.

Inpaint removes (paints over) an object from a photo by filling the space it occupies with something that blends with its surroundings. The rest of the photo remains intact.

This program cuts out the object by removing everything else in the photo. The object is left alone.

I didn't really wanted to make a review. But, this GOTD has too many issues for $50.

- Help file not updated to the program version/features + of very little help actually.

- At first, I thought the program was not working because I kept clicking on the icon on the toolbar. To remove the background, it's only from the button "Remove" inside the "Toolbox" panel on the right. The icon on the toolbar is only here to show the "Toolbox" if hidden. I thought that the main purpose of a toolbar was to contain shortcuts for actions? And what about tooltips? Gone MIA.

Problem is, the design suffers from the misuse of widgets: the toolbox should have a pin button at least, and not a "x" one. Not only that will be more intuitive, but also save coding. Following, other cases of this lack of understanding the widget library, as if it were necessary to give real life examples.

- From the view menu, you can hide the toolbar. Unfortunately, there are 2 (two) toolbars. No way to hide the 2nd one, not even with right click (and look at the popup menu!). Hit and miss.

- Radius slider: wrong scale (at 20%, the brush is already too big) + does not update value while moving the cursor.

- Brush color: always red, even when selecting foreground brush (green).

- Menu File: what do "Remove selected" and "Remove all" mean? Deleting files on disk? It costs nothing to be more explicit "Remove files from list", if it is the case. And put these menu items elsewhere, but not within the file menu.

- Dull graphics make all the icons almost undistinguishable from the background. Of course, no tooltips.

I don't know why some here say it works as intended. No, it does not.

In my test, it removed more than the selected area in red, eat a good part of a green area too, and did a poor job in automatic mode. In fact, it works in both modes. That makes this program unusable.

I agree with papin. Wasn't even close to removing just the background. And whatever you do DO NOT PRESS THE DELETE BUTTON thinking it's to delete the edited picture you're working on, oh no it deletes the picture completely from your hard drive. Doesn't even send it to the recycle bin.

Reply   |   Comment by Glen  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+46)

Don't waste time double checking what Glen says. I couldn't believe it so I did, with the folder open. And, with my own eyes, I saw my (original but backed up) pictures disappearing!

papin.
As usual a great comment from you, you expanded on some of the points in my comment.
However, I must disagree with you when you say that it did not work in removing the background, the only reason I said it did was because it worked on the images I tested it on and so I was only reporting facts.

Glen.
It does show a rubbish bin in the Delete button which tends to signify that it deletes it from the hard drive. However, I cannot think of a valid excuse for putting this button in the interface in the first place.

Agree: this software has problems. In addition to those already mentioned:

- If I entered a backgound (with the red marker) but no foreground, the progam crashed.

- When removing the background, it tends to miss bits here or there; it seems that the only way it will work properly is if EVERY tiny scrap of real estate is painted either green or red (but never both - which, incidentally, weirdly it allows you to do!)

- If you make changes to your photo, and then press the 'next' button without saving your work, the program asks you if you wish to save your work. If you answer 'yes', it will immediately and without further discussion overwrite your original file with the updated image... that is, it will do a 'save', not a 'save as'! Good practice is, of course, to always work with a file copy, but mistakes happen even in the best of circles. With this program, a moments forgetfulness can result in disastrous loss of a file! Personally, I regard this as completely unacceptable, and makes the program too dangerous to use.

Downloaded just fine on Windows 7 PC...

Played around for awhile using different photos and this program is difficult to use....are there any tutorials? The help files are poor...

I use Paint.net fairly often and can precisely cut out an image but it takes quite a bit of time so was hoping that this program would be faster.

No, it works for images only. We also do not have tools for Word, but have one for PDF documents

Hey Dual-boot here! Clean Install on both of my physical drives (Win8.1.3 & Win10 Batch 10130). Used same activation code for both and upon opening, I did not see 'mud-colour' but it was grey & black. Though a bit of a "one-trick" pony, it took a while; but, it did what it claimed. I wouldn't pursue a very large area on a large photo, it could take a long time to complete. Thanks to SoftOrbits & GOTD for today's offering and HAGD!

"I wouldn’t pursue a very large area on a large photo, it could take a long time to complete. "

Whether you're using Photo Background Remover or whatever else, Thomas, I've found it helps to 1st cut down on the amount of work you have to do. Start out with a crop if you want, then use a big brush, or rectangular selections & delete, or both, & in just a few moments really you're left with the object(s) you want to isolate, along with a border of sorts from the old background that you or the software can set about getting rid of.

Soft Orbits are one of those firms that regularly provide software here.
I have downloaded this software and find that it is similar to their other programs offered in that it is not very exciting, not cutting edge, not too good looking BUT it does what is claims quietly and efficiently which has meant that several of their products are now my first choice for image manipulation.
This product seems OK and gave reasonable results on a test picture but without more use it is difficult to give a full evaluation.
What surprises me is how 60% of people have given this the thumbs down-Surely they haven't all tried it or the thumbs down would be a lot lower.

Installed and registered without any problems, opens up to a depressing mud coloured interface.

Very roughly marked the area to be kept and to be removed on a complex image; the only indication anything was happening was the buttons in the right hand panel greyed out.

Interface did cause some confusion; Remove Background at the top appears to be for batch mode only and to remove from a single image the right hand Remove button and to be used.

Having tried to backgrounds previously and what a tedious process it can be felt that this program would do a huge amount of the work for me leaving only a little necessary work in an editor.

Most definitely a keeper.

I have several such programs. They are basically the same. This one does what it claims and it is very simple to use. The install was easy and I got the key without any problems. I don't have any problems running the program and it don't try to hook-up with the server when I open it.Thank you GOTD and Softorbits. It is a keeper.

Totally basic! No edge control, no control over blending, colour contamination or semi-transparent areas. And even if you have well defined edges and an uncomplicated background, it’ll still cut the extra pixcels into the object/the foreground; so you can forget about the finer details.

After activation it still wants to connect to the activation server every time you open the program. What’s that all about?

If you don't have photoshop or care about it, then this is more suitable than a photoshop plugin.

Reply   |   Comment by Spam  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+12)

FWIW, Joern's right. It's not unusual to read [or see in tutorials] that, out of all the plug-ins available, ReMask is the one that real pros often feel is indispensable.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+13)

Topaz ReMask is NOT a stand-alone software and only works with a small number of photo softwares.

Installed quickly on W8.1

Basic interface....simply select foreground & background areas & click remove

Annoyingly there is no indication removal is taking place, it appears the program may not be working until the background simply vanishes

Does what it says but no better than any of my other software

Actually, there IS a bar at the bottom showing progression, at least when the window is properly displayed, but it seems to have a problem adapting to certain screens. When I try to open it fully on my 1366x768 screen, the bottom and right side are cut.
