i installed this on my 500gb h/d which is a new drive installed on 14th August by technician. I have 2 external drives and am using the original old 60gb drive as a spare. After installing this Paragon software it said i could reboot or do it later. I decided to reboot but my pc wouldnt restart. I also noticed after checking My Computer that i had lost all access to my 2 external USB drives and the other old 60gb internal drive. So i uninstalled the software and then my pc rebooted and i got access back to my other drives that were missing. I wont use it again as it scared me LOL Thanks anyway, other great free software on here every day. I love Mahjong and Jigsaw games, can you put a few of them on here soon thanks? Thank you.

So, if my reading of the comments is correct, to summarize:

GOTD, July 15 2010:
Paragon Partition Manager 11SE Personal
Product released: 29.04.2010 (dd.mm.yyyy)
Published Version: "11.0"
Installed as: version 11, build 9887 (14.4.10) SE Personal

GOTD, September 6 2011 (today's):
Paragon Partition Manager 11 Special Edition
Product released: 10.06.2011 (dd.mm.yyyy)
Published Version: "11.0 Major update"
Installed as: version 10.0.17.13146 (25.03.11 ) Personal Special Edition

Well, if it is "Major Update" why is it the exact same external version of "11.0" as the release from 14 months ago?
And why is the installed version now "10" where last year it was "11"?

While the product is decent (I have used the older version),
The names and numbers are insanely confusing and confounding.

Almost as if they either don't care or want any one to really know what the bleep a version is. Or perhaps they have a totally separate team of "numbering specialists" whose job it is to pick numbers and names out of a hat of little papers with the words and numbers written on them, and then string them together for the new name.

I purchase this software (64-bit version) in September of 2010. It has served me very well! I can't say enough for Paragon software. THEY ARE GOOD AND SO IS THEIR SUPPORT.

I also purchased Paragon 11 PRO this week from BitDuJour.com. It was 50% off and I only paid $20 for the PRO version.

AWESOME SOFTWARE. AWESOME COMPANY.

Well, I have had a lot of trouble installing on Vista 64 bit....

I can extract it to the MSI file.... but the installer seems to stop working and I have no icons or start menu entries... And yes I did reboot to see the effect.

Is there separate 64 bit version??

I was so disappointed. It installed just fine on my Windows 7 64 bit desktop and laptop, but when I clicked on "Copy and Migration", then clicked "Copy Partition". It tells me it can't find any allocated space. The disk has no space to create a volume copy. There's only 61 gigs used on my C drive on my laptop. I'm trying to copy it onto my Passport external hard drive that has 698 gigs free, so why won't it let me copy my c drive to my Passport? Doesn't COPY PARTITION mean you can copy your C DRIVE? If anyone can help me, I'd sure appreciate it.

#9, Robert, #12, Robert from Germany, #18, Ben, #21, janet, and numerous others, Paragon is honest about what features the giveaway versions have. Like I said, I don't post anything which I haven't verified. I had already checked the release history on their website, as everyone should, and it matches what Paragon says in the description here. I don't memorize what's in these giveaway versions and compare them, I don't even like Paragon products and frequently don't install them. I don't enable people to be brainless and lazy, if you consider that to be "arrogant", then you have a strange interpretation of the definition.

Stripped editions aren't the same as full editions and it's not unusual for stripped editions not to show up in the change log. However, for a given major version number, Paragon usually gives us the most recent version minus the stuff that they remove for the giveaway, so you can generally go by the change/revision/release history/log.

People fixate on the version numbers. In this instance, who cares? I could say lots of bad things about how Microsoft has handled version numbers and dates, but that's not relevant. Paragon is giving you a free version which is improved over the previous free version. If you don't have the previous version, what do you care? If you do have the previous version, why wouldn't you want to install a newer, improved version? Release histories never give you a full list of changes, such as minor bug fixes and improvements, only the major ones, so you never know everything that's changed anyway.

RE #39 and #42, I also tried installing 3 times but installation was incomplete. I found an MSI file in the default c:\ directory, ran it and it asked for my email address. That's where I got the product and registration key. Registered and worked on Win7/64bit.

Wow. What for ideas in the box. After yelling around to combine the two separate downloads for 32bit and 64bit like it was in the past now a lot of people want separate downloads for each architecture (at least the idea got a lot of votes). I don´t think there´s much benefit from this since the file size to download won´t shrink that much that you save bandwith from this.

#38: "After installation was complete looks like this program is about the same as Easeus,"

They're the same in the way that I can use WordPerfect or Word to create a document -- same purpose, different apps & features. I use both, but tend to use Paragon more often because some stuff can't be done in EASEUS Partition Master, because Paragon apps will normally work portably after booting into LiveXP or WinPE, & because of Paragon's backup integration -- Not being able to restore an EASEUS backup from various LiveXP/WinPE discs/USB sticks means I can't/won't use EASEUS Backup.

* * *

#46: "… thing to remember is – the balance of the hard drive must be *empty* in order to resize the first partition … "

I think of it as drawer dividers if that helps anyone -- to slide the divider to the right or left, that portion of the drawer has to be empty. That said, I find it's often easier *for Me* to backup & restore partitions where & in the order that I want them. If I want to add a partition *in front of* another partition, that means the beginning of a partition has to be emptied to make room. You shouldn't do that IMHO without a backup. Rather than backing up & then moving anything, I'll reduce the size of the partition, backup, delete the partition, create the new 1st partition, then restore the backup to the empty space after that new partition. That restoration creates the 2nd partition. Shrinking or reducing the partition size just makes sure it can fit in the space allowed -- I can always enlarge the partition later to absorb free space.

#49: "V9.5 Pro allows you to change the cluster size on a logical drive & none of these other free Paragon programs do so. "

Several options are not available unless you choose the Advanced options, then click the More options arrows in the dialogs, e.g. see Help -> Windows Components -> Partition Mgmt.

#25: "The software looks very good, but it does not expressly say that it suppports SSD page alignment."

If it helps, from the full features page [ http://goo.gl/vMpXi ]:

"Enjoy full-fledged support for Windows XP/Vista/7 (32 and 64 bit) ... State Drives (SSD)..." & "Automatic partition alignment during partitioning/copy operations for the hard disk performance optimization."

* * *

#28: "Starting the main programm it says in “About”: Paragon Partition Manager™, version 10.0.17.13146 (25.03.11) Personal Special Edition. I am a little bit confused now!"

Paragon version numbers for their giveaways can be as confusing as the longish names -- why I tend to go by file dates. If it helps at all, this is a version 11 app based on backup compatibility -- version 11 backup archives won't open in version 10 apps, & backups made with today's GOTD won't.

* * *

#29: "Is this compatible with Restore-IT 7 offered a while back here? or does it set up its own boot sector."

Partition Mgr 2011 P SE doesn't touch the boot portion of the drive unless you install the Boot Mgr, which is a separate option in the program. It's just a regular app otherwise. That said, if you wanted to copy/backup/migrate the hard drive contents you might not get the Restore-IT portion or data -- if not there is an option in Partition Mgr to use every sector rather than just those it finds with data, & maybe that would work?

* * *

#34: "Does this product include the ability to create a virtual machine (P2V copy)?"

No. Paragon has [or had] a free virtualization app called Go Virtual -- I can't find it on their site, but download links I found using Google [e.g. MajorGeeks.com] work. If you want it I suggest grabbing it while it's available.

* * *

#35: "Downloaded, installed…and the program is nowhere to be found!"

I unzip the GOTD into a new folder, then running Setup.exe opens a WinRAR self-extractor after phoning home to verify the date -> clicking the Browse button I find & select that same, current folder -> that gives me PartitionManager.msi -> after closing Setup.exe can be deleted. After registering for a key at http://www.paragon-software.com/registration/pm11pers-se.html I save the e-mail I get from Paragon in that same folder -- that folder can now be stored anywhere convenient & today's GOTD (re)installed as needed. Double-clicking the msi file installs Partition Mgr.

For those of you, like me, that compare & keep various versions of Paragon software, here is a tip comparing this version Paragon Partition Manager 11 Special Edition with Paragon Partition Manager 9.5 Pro that was given away here a couple of years ago: V9.5 Pro allows you to change the cluster size on a logical drive & none of these other free Paragon programs do so. Including my paid for, Paragon Hard Disk Manager 11. And yes, I too find the Paragon version numbers very confusing.

An update of an already nice app [files dated 8/29/11], the 1st thing you'll notice about Paragon Partition Mgr 11 Personal Special Edition is that you can use the right-click mouse button to paste in your registration data -- I sure there's some GOTD regulars who won't miss reminding folks of Ctrl + V. The Release History [ http://goo.gl/R23bc ] &/or Partition Mgr's Help list the less obvious changes -- Auto partition alignment, better 64 bit support [mentioned in Help], AFD support, 2+ TB support, & USB 3 support... the web site also mentions an updated P2P that's probably included in the full version's WinPE.

Paragon's Partition Mgr. 11 Personal SE lets you create/delete partitions, as well as change their size, merge 2 partitions, defrag partitions, & does limited disk/partition image backup -- there are fewer backup options & restore has to be done using the bootable *nix CD you can create [the backup archives are compatible with other version 11 Paragon apps, but not version 10 or earlier]. Note that the newer safety features, like checking drive/partition integrity & protecting you against data loss in case of power failure can make jobs take longer. Partition Mgr. 11 P SE shows it's Express (Simpler) GUI when you 1st start, but by clicking on the Partition Mgr. button you'll get the full program window, where there's an Express Mode button on the toolbar to take you back. In the full window Settings, under the Tools menu, lets you set the level of safeguards you want Partition Mgr. to use -- safer = slower. Simple Backup does let you backup just the hard drive's 1st track, which can be invaluable before doing anything that effects how your system boots -- it's good insurance, especially since malware that infects that part of the drive is so common nowadays [because it loads 1st, it can hide files from Windows, & if Windows can't see them, neither can most AV software]. Under the Hard Disk menu, Update MBR [Master Boot Record -- Wikipedia http://goo.gl/hByj ] can sometimes help restore records that have become damaged, but make sure you backup what's there first by backing up that 1st track. The included Boot Mgr. is an option that can be installed to take the place of whatever boot mgr. you currently use, most often Windows own boot mgr. When you start your PC/laptop it starts 1st, giving you a menu of what OS you want to boot into, & can be handy with some older systems when/where Windows won't boot, when you want to also be able to boot into *.nix etc., but I don't think most people will use it. The included *nix boot disc ISO [in the iso folder] can be burned using you favorite software or Partition Mgr.s Recovery Media Builder, which also gives you the option to create a bootable USB stick -- Note that I have substituted another ISO for the 1 that comes with the program & had mixed results to USB... be aware that there is some risk to your USB stick, but if/when it works it can be easier than many alternatives. Also included is Copy Partition, which copies the raw data to empty space on a hard drive, & Disk Migration, which copies your system drive/partition to a new hard drive so your system will boot & run from it.

Installation isn't bad, though you'll get plenty of registry entries from the msi installer & the program folder itself is big [2000 files, 33 folders, ~142 MB] -- 62 MB of that is the ISO file that you can delete if you want after burning, & many of the files are for the Help, so the app itself isn't *that* complicated. While I recorded 638 new registry entries, Partition Mgr. only uses a couple for their driver, with the rest being mostly install/uninstall related. Partition Mgr. like most Paragon apps uses their Hotcore drivers [as well as Microsoft's vss] to take snapshots of a drive/partition while it's in use. Those drivers are what's different for 64 bit vs. 32. Most Paragon apps will work portably, in this case if you copy the msvcp60.dll, msvcrt.dll, & prgiso.dll it adds to Windows system folder into the \Paragon Software\ Partition Manager 11 Personal Special Edition\ program\ folder. Run that way, double clicking the launcher.exe file, they'll normally work after booting into one of the WinPE type environments, where not having those drivers installed won't matter much, since the hard drives you're working with aren't in use.

Thanks GAOTD and Paragon!

Resized a WD 80 GB SATA drive that had a small primary partition (~ 8 GB) to something usable (someone else set it up for me via eBay purchase) while retaining the installed, licensed software by others ... thing to remember is - the balance of the hard drive must be *empty* in order to resize the first partition ... this became apparent after several 'tries' that were unsuccessful ... and users don't forget about the 'Apply' checkmark - click the 'Apply' checkmark and THEN changes are implemented ... and don't worry about the computer 'restart' (reboot) that Paragon requests during actual partition resizing ... it worked *flawlessly* on my 5 yr-old Dell GX620 running Win Xp Home ed. w/SP3 ..

Thanks again guys!

Hello Paragon, and whoever else can help me with this, I was about to install this but when I choose to install, it installs to C:\ and nothing else. As my system is Windows 7 Professional x64 bit edition it has two program file folders, one for 64 bit apps “C:\Program Files”, and another for 32 bit apps “C:\Program Files (x86)”. My problem is, which folder do I install to, the 64 or 32 bit folder as the SW doesn’t say if it’s 64 or 32 bit.
Thanks to Paragon and whoever else can help me understand the principles of installation for this software.

For more than 2 hours didn't finish completely to install on Win 7 HP 64-bit. Cancelled installation and wanted to reinstall but that was not possible since 'there is another installation already running'. Since partition manager was somewhat there but couldn't deinstall nor install properly. So gave up and recovered system from before installation...

Had the same problem installing as noted in comment #22 - Using Win7 64 bit, took all morning to get s/n and key, used link provided by comment #7 to finally get s/n and key after deleting and installing for third time. After installation was complete looks like this program is about the same as Easeus, which is free without all the aggravation without having to provide e-mail address. Think we'll stick with the Easeus, as this version of Paragon Partion cannot be upgraded. Note have been downloading from this site for many years, this is the first time we've had problems with an installation.

My guess is that today's GAOTD is just the same, but up to the last free update.
In main window of the program (25 03 2011 version) there is also a link to get the last free update.
I am just not sure this will work on GAOTD release without loosing the license. Anyway, it's matter of goin from build 9887 to 13146...

The software looks very good, but it does not expressly say that it suppports SSD page alignment. Under Alignment, it speaks of LBA only.

It makes sense that SSD is included in this new feature, or else it would create false expectations. But it really ought to be expressly stated. This really should be clarified by Paragon.

I downloaded and installed EASEUS Partition Master Professional Edition 9.0 few weeks back from giveawayoftheday. Can anyone please compare today's give away with EASEUS.

I have been waiting for this for a very long time. I've been wanting to check the diffrence between Easeus partition pro also a GOTD give away and PARAGON. If Paragon lives up to their previous fantastic softwarem then not downloading this and trying it out will be your loss in the future . *THANKS* Paragon

correction: between the 404 and the install not responding, I had difficulty completing the install. The GOTD activation went well, the rest took a total delete and new decompress and install, but it did finally go in and stayed the third time. I believe the problems were outside of the product. The register button in the install did not work so thank you for the link, #7!

Fubar:

The Paragon website never gives info on Special editions. Your suggested links do not distinguish between

11 Personal Edition vs. 11 Personal Special Edition

which is what posters have been requesting. Please see my post #15 (if it passes moderation).

Seriously, most of the suggestions are limitations because:-
1) There's a "Pro" or "Server" version that has the extra features for if you'll pay the $$ (remember this is a freebie)
2) It's cleaner *not* to have third party programs integrate into Computer Management (addins for MMC)
3) Legally not allowed due to third party software licenses.
4) Can't because it's not logical (or common sense) to.

@Robert from Germany

My last GAOTD one is PPM, version 11, build 9887 (14.4.10) SE Personal.

Could someone who has installed today's please report the build and date? Many thanks!

I don't want to remark on the software itself just the strange (lack of) version numbering they seem to do at Paragon. Don't these people understand the information that is contained in such version numbers?

From their own Release History: ( http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-personal/release.html )

============================

So the latest release is from before the last Giveaway and therefore it would seem today's version should be the same. The installer is slightly bugger than any of the two versions from the previous giveaway and there were two separate versions for 32 and 64 bits Windows then. Not today so maybe they have managed to combine both 32 and 64 bits version in a single installer.

But first of all why on Earth don't they change the version number from the 29.04.2010 version 11.0 in the 10.06.2011 "Major update" to something like 11.1 or even 11.5 if it's such a major update? And even if today's version(s?) is/are identical to the previous giveaway except for the combined installer (if that is indeed the case) then just say so. And perhaps change the version number from 11.1 (which it should have been) to something like 11.1.0.1 to indicate a very minor change (the installer). I would expect such adequate version numbering would be helpful for the support people too so they'll know exactly which version the customer is using.

I mean... what's the trouble? None as far as I can see. And what's the downside? Again none as far as I can see. Am I missing something here or is Paragon?

PS: I like that last line in today's offering: "Restore system and data even from bare-metal state." Catchy. I wonder what it means?
