Like several others, I was able to activate, then setup fine, but when I try to run the program it stalls at the splash screen. Hope this gets offered again with a fix; my kids would really enjoy it, from the feedback I see here.

BTW, I also purchased Finale 2009 Complete Edition this past spring. It will be interesting to compare these two ;-)

Anyone done a comparison this soon?

Thanks for the software, BUT - a HUGE but...

This software "hid" its "activate.exe" file!
I finally came across it today in a temporary folder of its own making, far removed from the download spot on my hard drive. This was not mentioned in Readme or the program itself.

Like other posters (since removed from here, it seems), I could not tell if I was registered or not. After installing the program, clicking on "About" showed registered to Giveawayoftheday, but no serial number.

TODAY, I found the Activate.exe file. Which will not work now, of course. What to do?

Thanks,
John

I don't understand why someone from admin doesn't either proactively caution users when registration steps don't quite match the various README files, or at least drop by early and reassure everyone before half a hundred people post identical panicky queries. It'd be pretty simple to say -
"Hallo der, FOGs (friends of Giveaway) -
download,
open zip,
run activate
click EXTRACT files (so a new folder with colorful icons appears) click the colorful activate icon,
then run setup.
If the Help-About says it's registered to giveaway, you're all set. No registration number is needed.
You may see a BuyNow nag screen ONCE, but then the program will open normally for as long as you keep the program.
Thank you velly much.

FWIW - Several members, including myself, had the same problem with the last version, but it turns out, the blank registration field is perfectly OKAY.

Same problem with registration - no serial number & shows registered to GAOTD, with buy now button activated. How do we get an answer to this problem once the software offer times out? Evidently nobody with the software mfg cares enuf to monitor this site & provide an answer.

This looked like such a good program - it also seemed to install, activate and open with no problems - XP SP3

However... every time I try to open a new score, the program shudders, minimises and runs around in computer circles - can't be used - great pity. This has happened on 2 different computers. Now uninstalled.

Folks: If you're still within the deadline time, RTFM! The readme quite clearly states that you run activate.exe first: this will connect to the Net and check eligibility. If it all works, you will see a Big Browser page telling you so. THEN you can run setup.exe, not before!

Activated and Installed on Vista HOme Premium 32-bit with no problem. I ran both the activation and the setup as Administrator. Although, when I go to the registration screen it shows Giveawayoftheday and does not show a registration number, I don't get a screen with a limitation on how many times I can use it or how many days I can use it. Mine seems to be just fine.

for those wondering if this is a trial, if it says Giveaway of the day for the name then it's the full version. About the software, I have the last giveaway and it's great for beginner's. No time to get into details. I wasted it on reading all comments about no serial. Thanks for the update GAOTD and DG software.

Some of you may have heard of SpywareBlaster and Spybot Search & Destroy. SpywareBlaster automatically places addresses in your Restricted Sites to prevent downloading spyware from these sites. I noticed the address of the site you're supposed to visit to register this MagicScore, regnow.com, is listed among those sites.

Unzip, Activate then Install - exactly according to their instructions. Tried this twice and the program hangs on the splash screen using XP Home, SP3. I've uninstalled it an will not try it again. Too many others have had the same problem. This is the worst problem I've had with any software from GAOTD that I've tried.

DLed, unZIPped on 32-bit Vista. Right-clicked each of Activate and Setup and went to Properties. Near the bottom of the main tab is a clearable warning that "this file came from another computer and ...".
Clear that warning, Save, and close the Properties window.

Did that for *each* of Activate and Setup. The ran Activate "as Administrator", followed by Setup *also* "as Administrator". Finally, running the program itself also "as Administrator" it came up showing itself properly registered to GaOTD, with no visible serial number,
and with no visible time limitations.

UI as inscrutable as May's v. 3.532. Only time will tell whether this will turn out to become usable for me (for compositing musical notation, by hand, to represent the music I hear "in my head").

#64 Couldn't agree more!
#35 Seems your musician friend is quite critical without much reason.
I am a professional musician myself and I say, NICE WORK! Although this program is somewhat limited when compared with "professional" music programs, it's not just a play-toy either.

Apparently it's been "specially created for folks who are learning music, but professional musicians can use it as well."
Quite accurate, I reckon.
For FREE, who's gonna complain?

And even for the above price, THIS IS AWESOME!!!!

Very cool design. Seems like it will be very practical once you get used to it...

Wonderful program! I love it! I am assuming that the registration does work, it just doesn't show the serial # so we can't re-use it?? BUT it didn't put anything in my registry! Maybe it doesn't actually USE a registry code? That doesn't seem to make sense. Unless it's actually a demo/trial. Thanks GOTD & DG Software! :)

Guess we have all got too used to putting in Serial #'s to deal with this, it is to easy :)
If you try the components that are for fully registered users and if you followed the order in the Read me file when you installed the program you will find they all work. Well they did for me.

for everyone who is confused about the registration:
this is a BASIC version that can be upgraded to the classic or maestro versions on the website, both of which offer more functionality than what is provided in the download. that is why there is the buy now button and no serial number. if you upgrade it will go away, but only if you buy the maestro version, which might be worth it if you are a serious composer. but for most of us, dont look a gift horse in the mouth. it is better to get it free than to spend $30 on a program that you may not even like.

Like Fred (comment #5), I downloaded this program when it was previously offered in May (although my version says it is version 5.342), and I like the program. I went to the web site given

{{http://www.musicaleditor.com/magicscore-school-sheet-music-software-5.html}}

but couldn't find a list of changes anywhere. (I suppose I could have overlooked it.) Does anyone know what the differences are between the version offered in May and this one so I can know for sure if it's worth upgrading today?

And thanks to GOTD for all of the great programs you make available!

As a user of Finale 2007, I find this is a good free alternative for someone who needs an inexpensive notation program. It lacks many of the options of the full Finale program but is certainly good enough to compose or arrange songs or tunes that can be fairly complex.
I find the view not as pleasing as any of the Finale programs or Sibelius either.
If you're not a professional with specific needs, it's a great little program that does the basics.
Finale Notepad used to be free but the 2009 version goes for $9.95. IT's comparable in features but the view is more pleasing and the files are compatible with Finale PRo.
But this little program is worth downloading.

I followed the instructions in the readme file and the program opens but it gives me a nag about buying it. So I rerun activation. No nag but when I look at the registration it says it's a trial and I need to buy it and there's no serial.

SOMEBODY FIX THE REG ISSUE PLEASE!

I really want to use this program.

I noticed two things on my XP Pro system.
1. After installing as instructed in the readme file, the program opens with the splash screen and a small window which asks how you want to start up. The program itself opened on my second monitor, which was turned off. Of course, I didn't find it until I turned on the other monitor.
2. If you check the ABOUT selection under the help menu, it says it is registered to GAOTD. No need to use the REGISTER selection.

This is an upgrade of an earlier offer. I will pass on the upgrade and stick with the original offering. You choose what you want to do for your computer. I want to focus on the upcoming games for the weekend. You heard it here first. I predict it will be two days of game repeats. Again........... Maybe Merscom. I love Merscom games. I have many from here but I would not like to see repeats. I am sure I am not alone in these thoughts. Make me wrong GGAOTD team. Offer us something new.

#9, I think it is trailware. I can't find a serial number to register either.

It says in the License Agreement:

"2. Anyone may use this software during with limit in 30 records.
If you wish to use all MagicScore features without limitation,
you MUST register."

"5. To register you must complete the registration form and send it,
with registration fee, to one of the authorized registration
sites, see REG_SITE.TXT."

So, it looks to me that it is a trial and you can use it 30 times.
(The wording in # 2 seems a bit vague.)

Since you are not a musician, nor interested in learning,
just a friend of one
you cannot very well make an evaluation of the software
