HDDLife is a real-time hard drive monitoring utility with alerts, malfunction protection and data loss prevention functions. This hard drive inspector is a proactive hard drive failure detection system which manages all of your hard drive risks.

Worried about hard drive failures? Get HDDLife - a real-time hard drive monitoring utility with alerts, malfunction protection and data loss prevention functions. This hard drive inspector is an advanced proactive hard drive failure detection system which controls all of your hard drive risks.

HDDLife uses S.M.A.R.T. technology, and works both for single PCs and large computer networks. S.M.A.R.T. technology was developed by hard drive manufacturers to accurately predict hard drive life span and prevent HDD malfunction.

HDDLife displays S.M.A.R.T. attributes in real-time and alerts the system administrator if particular hard-drive attributes exceed threshold values and are at risk. The system administrator can then backup data and/or replace endangered hard drives.

HDDLife loads on Windows start, compares new attribute values with the previous values and consumes absolutely no memory.

The program is extremely straightforward - no fundamental knowledge of PC or hard drive technology is needed whatsoever.

Zero failures during the last four years for the 100000+ hard drives monitored!

I emailed the author about the SMART info and I got this:

It asks, but not any reports about problem with stress drives are known.

He didn't say anything on how often it asks.

#7 WROTE: "It looks as if all this software does is check the temperature of the drive. "
You are essentially right. I mean it does more than that, but temp is probably the only actually useful feature in the program.

#10 wrote: http://www.hddlife.com/HDDlife.exe is a Free download. Full Freeware. Same version number. 6.5 MB.
Yes, but if you look at the comparison chart, the free version is so crippled it can hardly even do anything. Most all of the features are gone or disabled in the free version of this program.

#15 WROTE: "This application is crap.
- I purchased and installed a new HDD from Seagate. Application showed 49% HDD life.
- I purchased a new second one from Seagate, 65% life
- then a new retail Maxtor, 68%
- Western Digital drives are correctly detected, I got 98% after 2 months of hdd use.

Well, that's pretty harsh, but you've got a point. I also found the %-age indicator meaningless. Not accurately portraying anything.
And also this program incorrectly identified the installed physical drives. Plus even though I disabled the default annoying warning SOUND, it STILL kept beeping and buzzing on me despite sound being disabled. So I had to quit out of the program after it kept Bleeping about one drive with low disk space every 10 minutes.

#16 WROTE: I’m guessing you need S.M.A.R.T. enabled on your mobo for this app to work? why not just heed your POST screens?
Yes, it uses SMART. And also this program said it could not provide temp status on one of my drives because temp was not supported.
SMART is on the drive itself, not (only) the mobo. But a reason to use this (not this program but *a* monitoring program) is because
POST only happens at boot up. Personally I have machines that stay up for 29 days... 10 days... 2 months... 15 days... etc. So you would
only get notified on Bootup and if you don't reboot for days or even weeks or months, then you might miss an event that might indicate
a drive is beginning to show signs of failure. So this type of program could provide continuous monitoring, and that would be one reason to run this instead of just relying on POST warnings.

#18 wrote: "How is this software supposed to be helpful? I installed it and it gives me the temperature which is nice as my laptop tends to heat up but I don’t understand what exactly it is supposed to be doing." - It's a program to improve your life by stimulating your brain and increasing your mental power by challenging your mind to figure out all that it does. That's why it is called "HDDLife" :) Oh, and also, it tells the temperature of your drives.

#31 wrote: "Hey number #15,....Get a life." -an HDD Life?

#36 WROTE: "I did a find for the MSI and it is not found."
-UGH. MSI's are the worst installers. .msi files are horrible. msi stands for Micro Soft Installer. They are slow. They are cumbersome. They put all kinds of crap and junk littering your registry. .msi files cannot be deleted because the uninstaller needs pieces of stuff that are in the original .msi file to uninstall a program and if you delete it then the uninstaller breaks. MSI files dump themselves into hidden places in your "application data" directory in your local settings folder, and msi files also put themselves or pieces of themselves into your C:\WINDOWS directory. msi files are a MESS. If any developers are reading this... 2 words for you: DO NOT EVER USE THE MSI INSTALLER! Ok, if you were paying attention, that's not 2 words, but you can probably think of 2 nice words that can be used to describe .msi files. ;-) --by the way, you made a very informative and useful post Ron/Rohn. Full of Good suggestions for the developers.

#53 WROTE The Advanced Specialist... Thanks for those comments. --You're welcome :-) And btw you were right. Your name showed as anonymous.

#65 Steve WROTE: "but what language is #27? anyone?" --Steve, that is ROMANIAN language. That's a fake post designed as a link-back to THEIR own site to fudge its popularity in search engines. Romania is the home of some of the most obnoxious spammers, annoying chat flooders, identity thieves, credit card fraud perpetrators, etc. Some organizations have blocked the IP NETBLOCKS of the entire country. Romania is known as harboring unscrupulous users and being rife with cybercrime. Here, you can just go read about it CBS NEWS for example: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/10/20/tech/main578965.shtml Even the Travel Advisories by the DEPARTMENT of STATE talk about creditcard fraud in ROMANIA. And the cybercrime problem and Romania is pretty well known See: http://www.crime-research.org/news/28.02.2005/994/ Don't ever buy/sell anything on ebay to or from Romania, or open emails or software from the .RO domain. *** FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: ***

1. To activate the program, Read the README file and do what it says in there.

2. Aside from the README, there is often a program called "ACTIVATE.EXE" included in the download. RUN IT to activate the program.

3. When you run the activate program, Make sure you have internet access turned on and you have access so that it can 'talk' to the giveawayoftheday.com website. I believe it might need to phone home to confirm your activation. Make sure your firewall etc is not blocking anything.

4. If you still think it's not registered, not activated, or it still says TRIAL VERSION, or if it still says "nn days remaining", then QUIT out of the application program and open it again. If it's the type of program that minimizes to an icon near your clock (that area is called "the system tray") then you need to click that icon and exit that too. Sometimes just clicking the [X] box on the application window doesn't quit, it is just minimizing it. Make sure you QUIT out of it completely. Then open the program again.

5. If all else fails, REBOOT your computer and then check if it is Activated.

:-)

Try doing those before posting and see how it goes 1st. You'd be surprised how many problems a nice reboot will solve. :) Try it.

To #103 (and #95), yes my HDD folder (setup part) has some other type of language on it too, just like you explained. Part is in English and the setup is some other language. It is messed up.I need to uninstall it but I cannot find any way to uninstall it. My control panel ,add/remove programs does NOT show that it is installed either! I have tried everything that I can think of. I just have 2 files on my desktop with no option to uninstall, anywhere? It does not open or work...nothing!! How can I get rid of this program?? Please help me figure this out!!!!

Thanks for this great app! Just recently found this site and i've already set this as my homepage, it's an awesome site!

This program works nicely for me, it reports 99% health for my new laptop and 50% for my main PC(alot of usage, although only a year old) and about 60% for my other comp(lesser usage, although 2 - 3 years old). The result looks accurate if you ask me.

Is this some kind of joke? I left comment #95 and am not kidding - the download I get is a file in Russian. Even on the hddlife.com website itself, the download from there is in Russian, too. There are links for an English, Russian and German version but when I click on the English link, it still is in Russian. Can someone please tell me what is going on here? I'm serious! I just downloaded the 'HDD' and all I get is this....
"The software for the Toshiba Hard Disk Password Utility is not compatible with this version of Microsoft Windows and will be disabled during the upgrade. You should uninstall this software for a more complete solution.

For more information about this software, or to obtain a version that runs on this version of Microsoft Windows, visit the manufacturer's Web site.

For a list of software supported by this version of Microsoft Windows, see the Microsoft Windows XP Compatibility List at http://www.microsoft.com."
I am a newbie as they say. What should I do?

Oops, forgot to leave my comments on it :P

As indicated above, the program *usually* only takes up the memory they claim it does, but honestly, if the theming's what's making it take up more memory, I say dump the theming. (I've already stating my feelings about theming... but also, the OS should do it, not the application.)

This is a sound program, as it does what it says it does, but honestly, it's just another program that reads S.M.A.R.T. information. It *seems* that you can tell it to stop monitoring temperature and such by putting those settings to 0hrs, 0mins, which I'm quite thankful for because I already have a temperature monitoring program that does more (and takes up less icon space). I do like that it can adjust the speed/noise setting.
What I don't like, though, is as someone else has stated: The percentages aren't self-explanatory, even though there are labels saying what the *current* percentages mean. For example, I have a drive at 58% and it says "EXCELLENT!" for the performance. Sure, maybe. But what if it was 50%? How far am I from a failing drive?

Well, another good giveaway. I think what I like the most about GotD is that the comments pointing to other software solutions don't get deleted ;>

This is very weird, but the setup.exe file is labeled in Russian! Can that be right? I've downloaded it several times from both the main and mirror site and get the same setup file. The activate.exe file works, as it connects to GOTD and says the software is activated but when I run the setup.exe file (unzipped), it doesn't run any installation program. Did something get hijacked? I'm not making this up! I've installed several other GOTD programs and never had a problem until today. What is up with that Russian file name??

Now that I've gotten this activated...

For those worried about the memory usage:
1MB to 3MB regular
13MB to 16MB if you are doing things with it (e.g. changing options).
You can check the memory usage by hitting CTRL+SHIFT+ESC (to bring up the Task Manager) and checking the Processes tab. (Look for HDDLifePro.exe.)

#8: A computer's SMART function (enabled via BIOS) tells you the same thing. In fact, a freeware for laptops (called NOTEBOOK HARDWARE CONTROL) has a function where it also monitors the SMART and tells you your hard disk information in real time... and the program itself also does more than just monitoring hard disks.

While I know the crew behind the fantastic GotD has worked hard to push out many good apps that I use now - like DAC, this Giveaway is sort of a letdown. I'll even prefer screensavers over this.

#8, if you can't read BIOS SMART messages when your computer boots up, I'll reconsider your flawed opinion.

Too many words don't explain in essence what this software truly does. The developer needs to explain the functionality in a better way. Does the software receive the SMART data from the HDD or it asks for it? If so, how many times does it do it? From my intuition excessive requests of SMART status may actually stress the drive even more, contributing to its decay sooner.
I also believe this application should have lighter, with less user controls, and a smoother and faster installer. I uninstalled it. I'll be glad to give it another try in the future, hoping the developer has taken care of all mine and other's suggestions. -bintrap

I'm using this. Had no problem installing at all. Thank you, GOTD.

The only thing I wanted to mention if their people are reading this: I have one drive 100+GB and one extremely small drive. I think this second drive is where my restores are kept. It is always almost all full. Is there any way to *not* monitor this drive and *not* keep getting popup warnings except to set my free space level %s so low that it is useless for my big drive?

If #10 is right, it's kind of sad that they slapped a $30 tag on it and then offered this freeware to GOTD guys. Free stuff should not be promoted like this. If it the case that is.

Regaldless if it's a cheap trick from BinarySense or not, the program works well and does exactly what it says on the tin. I like simplicity and will surely keep it on 24/7.

The following paragraph is here only for those visitors who like to guess which language belongs where. The guys running GOTD might be excluded from this - I guess they speak my language judging from our nation's way of phrasing English... :-)

Cau vsichni Givaci! Snad vam budouci uspech nepreroste pres hlavu. Zatim delate neco fakt dost dobryho. Ojedinelost se taky pocita. Jen vydrzet! Jestli chcete dokoncit tech par poslednich oprav co se tady porad vali po vsech tech zmenach - zadarmo samozrejme - tak se klidne ozvete.

My Seagate ST3120026A 120GB has worked for a year and a half, health and performance are both 50%!
I wish I could have the option to change the noise/performance level though...
Its grayed out for me.

Unfortunately, it shows my 6-year-old-piece-of-crap-3-GB hard drive in the logical disks info as having 0 capacity and used space, and it doesn't show up in the drive tabs.
I don't care if it fails, I don't actually use it ;)
