Today I’m posting links to three excellent free platformers! These are a bit more genteel and something of a different flavour to the ‘Saw’ variant I posted links for recently earlier this week! They are all a lot of fun in different ways, with lots of levels between them and mostly get difficult or very difficult further on. It’s a very varied selection! They all very much deserve to be better known and widely played!
Fairy Attackers (24.2Mb)
Fairy Attackers is a brilliant retro platformer by Alpha Secret Base, creator of the excellent Umihara Kawase Shun tribute called Gambare Natsuki-San. It’s another Japanese Doujin game with super retro-style graphics and music.
The world of Spirits and Humans existed in peaceful harmony until one day this harmony disappeared. Search the dungeons and other regions for the crystals that will restore this harmony!
"Watch out for the Fairy Attackers! They mean business! Ahhh! At a glance, you’d probably think this game is a Wonderboy/Monster World clone... because of the whole walking through doors thing and the hearts and the gold and the whole, uh, umm... the sound effects and stuff. Anyway, what to say about this one? You play as a girl character and a little musical note/bubble fish-looking creature and together glide around killing stuff and boosting your life." It may be a tad too easy in places, but it’s a great game for younger members of the family, though of course anyone can play. "They seem to make games for fun and I greatly respect that. Enjoy!"
Press the Z key to throw your weapon at enemies, or hold the down arrow key to use your shield and reflect harmful projectiles.
The up arrow key can be used to open doors, activate objects and initiate conversations with other characters. Touch the stone with inscriptions to save your progress, or drink from the tiny fountain to restore health. Once you've gained a travel companion, press the C key to hold it for additional float ability. A map can be accessed by using the S key.

Frogatto (97Mb)
Frogatto is one of the best 2D platform games! "It absolutely oozes charm and satisfying playability.
You are an unemployed frog, whose aim in life is to go on adventures and earn some cash! Mostly, you’ll be helping the townsfolk with various tasks that range from cleaning up some ants to saving the entire village!
As with most platform games, you walk, dash, swim, jump, and stomp through the delightfully-drawn 2D world. Enemies are usually harmless unless they're carrying something dangerous, so don't be afraid to bump into them (or stand on their head). Frogatto's main weapon is his ability to grab enemies with his tongue and spit them out as projectiles, either at other enemies, or to stun them so he can jump on them. Your reach is laughably / lamentably short at the beginning of the game, but collect enough coins during each stage will allow you to buy upgrades at the store. You can also purchase other upgrades such as power-ups to grant temporary invincibility, extra life hearts, a longer spit reach, and more when you have enough cash! You get to talk to the townsfolk in the game too.
Frogatto's world is vast and filled with neat surprises, and oftentimes you'll have to find (or open up) new paths to get to where you want to. Frogatto can carry one item in his belly, so lugging keys from one place to another often becomes a necessary task. You can't wall jump or swim while your belly is filled, though, so your traveling plans will probably change while you're chubby.
Wall jumping is unreliable at the best of times, as if our amphibious chap will only stick to walls when he's in the mood. When a wall jump ‘should’ work, it sometimes doesn't, leaving the player scratching their head. With a little practice you can wall jump with a fair amount of reliability. When you get killed off, more often than not you restart on the same level, so it’s great for a quarter hour play or (much, much!) longer!"
OK, it's got similarity with games like Mario and Sonic, but it sure kicks in the right places!
"The 30 levels are varied and fun, with plenty of interesting tricks, moving platforms, wall-kick areas, and pretty much everything else you’d expect. Enemies pack a lot of variety, too, and the boss battles are creative. The dialogue provides a welcome bout of humour, though the story is never over-complicated!
Graphics and sound are great, too: the pixel art is lovingly rendered, and it really gives this modern game a classic feel. There’s great arcade style music too.
Definitely one to savour!"

Maidsan Wo Migini (9.6Mb)
Maidsan Wo Migini is a classic platform game from Japan where you have Picking keys to open doors to proceed or finish a level, while avoiding or defeating the monsters and vampires and defeating the bosses. The game is a Castlevania clone with excellent graphics, music, and playability. There are very many options present. Controls are simple for move, shoot and jump!
The maid Rachel has set out on a mission to free the kingdom from vampires forever. Her quest will take her to many places and as well as avoiding capture by vampires, and many traps, she has very many monsters and the fiercest of all the vampire bosses to defeat. The enemies hamper Rachel’s progress by forcing her back or killing her with very well timed and difficult to avoid shots!
Are you the right maid/ maid master to explore the dungeons, beat tight time limits, stay alive, destroy the vampires and the vampire bosses, and ultimately free the kingdom…? Nice retro-style graphics and very catchy music!
Game Menu 'Z' to select, 'X' to confirm (eg choose name), 'arrow' keys to move.
In Game 'L/R' arrows to move or change direction, 'Z'' Jump, 'X' attack, 'down' arrow to duck.
Compatible with USB gamepad.
The Right maid or fair maid in translation, is a Japanese Doujin game (ie female character, typical to these games) platform action game that is easy to get into because of English menus, and I have posted an English version manual (reworked by myself for easy reading) Here so you can pick up the gameplay quickly and easily. Do note that you can sometimes shoot through walls! There are also fairly frequent game save checkpoints, much needed at times!
It gets difficult enough quite soon on the easy option, never mind the higher difficulty setting! You can play it though whatever your gaming ability! There are some great challenges later on for practised gamers! I’ve included this one for its great and extensive gameplay. Time attack mode is only available once you have completed a level.
It’s a fairly standard action platformer, but plays extremely well! There are hazards such as falling blocks, and elevators. Timing has to be really good to get past the monsters or destroy them. The monsters are very well-timed and well-aimed in their shooting at you and you sometimes have more than one to deal with at a time later on! The levels are similar in construction but get much more difficult as you progress! Please see the Manual HERE for more details, everything is explained and illustrated there!
