Fate:

After many days of travel, you've reached the forest town of Grove. On the outskirts of town, and once within the fiery dungeon gates, you'll find fame, adventure and fortune. Get tips from townspeople and acquire power with unique weaponry and magic spells. Your invincible pet defends you against monsters that lurk within dark, dangerous corridors. Determine your FATE with unlimited replay and countless levels in this superb dungeon-crawling RPG!

You can check it out HERE Their Facebook page can be found HERE. There's a link near the top of the facebook page that says Get Fate free on the 14th June. The page it links to asks you to click the green colored button that says 'Like Us' which then takes you back to the Facebook page.

The game is less than $7 to purchase, but still looks like a worthwhile game to pick up for free on that date. The unlock code will be up for several days and you can download the game from 'wildgames HERE to see if it's worth waiting for the unlock code.

On appearance, it reminds me of Torchlight, which I got from steam while it was on special.

So I'll have to pass on this. Torchlight ftw.

Thanks PlainVanilla for reminding me that the unlock code is available today. All you have to do to get the code is visit Wild Tangent's facebook page as given in the top post by WR to get the code. I already bought the game on sale, but it is nice to have a digital copy so I don't need to use the CD or DVD it came on.

I know why Fate reminded me of Torchlight. I'm such an idiot sometimes. Same devs etc. they even called it an updated Fate. put 2 + 2 together sometimes chrono.

If you like this game I highly recommend you watch Steam for the next torchlight deal. As Chronopie mentions above it's similar to torchlight, which is even better than Fate. There are also two sequels to Fate that you can buy quite cheaply from Wildgames. :) Glad you're liking it.

FATE turned out to be a very enjoyable game. I like the fluid gameplay and the energized atmosphere of the game. IMO, it is worth the download!

If you go to Wild Tangent's facebook page that Campy has a link to (7th posting down) you can find the unlock code for Fate. No need to give any information.

I never could get this game to work properly. It always crashed right after I created my character and shown the "Loading" page nearing complete. Posted on their forums and updated all my drivers but nothing worked. :(

PlainVanilla, I also have it working on two computers. One is a high end Win7 64, but the other is a netbook (with 2 GB & a low end GPU rather than onboard, an Asus N10J) running Win7 32. Both are running fine.

I to have it running on two machines: XP Pro SP2, 1Gb RAM, old MMX video card and Win7 Home Premium 2.5Gb RAM and GeForce 6200.
Have you checked out the system requirements on the site?

Operating System: Windows XP or Vista
Processor: Pentium - 800MHz or better
RAM: 256MB
Video Card RAM: 16MB, 3D hardware acceleration required
DirectX Version: 8.0 or above

If it's allowed, post your specs here including DirectX version (make/model/OS/graphics/RAM). Also any error messages generated with the crash and we may be able to help :)

I downloaded this game on the 14th as soon as I got home. I was so looking forward to it as I had played the demo and LOVED it. Unfortunately, I have yet to play it.

One problem that quite a few gamers have encountered with this and MANY other Wild Tangent games is the

"Runtime Error:
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way"

This shows up when you try and start the game (after d/l and entering the free code etc.)

I mention it here as there are a lot of folks on the WildTangent forums looking for solutions for this problem, me included! I have downloaded it twice and still can't get past the runtime error.
If WR or anyone else could help it would be great!

Buskie...have you tried changing the screen resolution for the game? Open the config file with a text editor. Config file can be found here for XP and Vista:

C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/WildTangent/fate/Persistent (Windows XP)

C:/ProgramData/WildTangent/fate/Persistent (Windows Vista)

I don't know about Windows 7 sorry. Simply change the screenwidth and height lines and keep trying. It may work and it may not. You may also want to try to play in windowed mode instead of fullscreen. You can do this by changing the Fullscreen option to 0.

For the rest of you, I thought I'd throw out the fact that Fate has a good number of mods available here.

The only file I can find is called config.ini and I did find a height/width and changed it a few times without any joy.

Where can I change to windowed mode (fullscreen option to 0)?

I have Windows 7 and file named config.dat was in the same location as noted by WOO for Vista. The fullscreen option was the fourth on listed right after width, height and show fps and before the sound volume levels.

I also read somewhere that having the demo installed along with the full version can cause problems. The suggestion was to fully remove both and then re-install the full version.

When searching for the config file, please bare in mind that it is not located in the same spot you installed the game. The folder is actually hidden, though most of us here don't allow hidden files. The config file will be in 1 of those 2 exact locations.

Of course another step would be to uninstall Visual C++ and try re-installing it to see if that would get it to work. I've been reading that Torchlight suffers from this same error for many people as well.

the only file inside is config.ini containing:

[WireUpdate]
LastCheck=1203412959
[WireSettings]
ClientWidth=788
ClientHeight=536

Perhaps the fact that I have no "persistent" file explains something?

Did you check (tick) show hidden files/folders and uncheck "Protected operating system files (recommended)"?
Unless you do this, you won't be able to access the file 'Persistant'.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
Click Hide Protected operating system files (recommended).
click Apply, OK.

Once you have opened the config file with Notepad, look for FULLSCREEN:1 and change the 1 to 0 (zero), save and exit.
