   I see a lot of tripe in comments on front page like, 'theres better freeware and open source available than todays give away', etc.

   So instead of wasting time on the front page bitching each other heres a sticky explaining it yourself.

   So rules of combat are as follows:

   Whatever is posted on the front page each 24 hour period you then have to come up with polite comments explaining why your example is better and if there is a linux or mac alternative if it's a windows release.

   If it's only a windows release then no problems.

   Only post here if:

   1)it's freeware /Or
   2)it's open source
   3)has no spyware what so ever
   4)you can provide a valid link to the home page that also explains about the application or game and provides a working download link.

   N:B free download does not count as freeware in most cases.

   Let the battle commence.

   Lee,

   I don't think people are aware of this forums since they keep posting free software on the main page and it's been 7 hours since you posted it. Maybe you should include a message on the comments page along the lines of the one already given:

   'Please comment only the software here. If you have technical problems or suggestions on our project, please leave us a note in our forums.'

   But I think having those comments at the end of the page is a mistake. They should be at the top and with big and shining letters, and, if you have the manpower, actually divert all posts that suggest free software here.

   It will be hard to enforce the, 'no spyware or opensource' requirements unless you have a tool that check for spyware. Specific opensource requirements software that is comparable to your GAOTD or GGOTD may not exists or may be in beta stage.

   Also, there is a forum thread where you are actively contributing which has links to lots of free software. It may be easier to make that one sticky.

   All this is, of course, IMHO

   Freeware:

   Software that IMO beats todays give away (Hard Drive Inspector v2.2) is called HD Tune v2.53.

   Works better, system feels smoother and is less of a system resources hog.

   Alternatives to Direct Midi to MP3 Converter

   The definitive freeware for this task (Midi to MP3) is Timidity++ http://timidity.sourceforge.net/ , though I guess this may be a little easier to set up.

   A download of the “easy” version of Timidity, preconfigured with a usable 4MB SF2 soundfont, can be found here http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Timidity_Midi_to_WAVMP3/1075746867/1 - though the homepage for this version seems to have wandered from host to host and died.

   http://timidity.s11.xrea.com/index.en.html - one reasonably good resources for Timidity and soundfonts - may also help in tracking down some good (large!) soundfonts to use with this one.

   http://www.synthfont.com/ - Synthfont is another one (though both this and Timidity have their diehard supporters), also available as a VST instrument

   Timidity++ is open source, multiplatform, free forever, not just today. Synthfont is not open source or multplatform, but has more recent development. Between them, there should never be any need to consider buying midi rendering software.

    Considering the recent "paint prog" (Zoner Draw 4) is not actually a "paint prog" (which most people refer to bitmap or photo editors as) - It would be fair to say that Paint.net is a very poor vector graphics program.

    The two programs are apples and oranges - and each has a very specific purpose they are designed to address.

    So, what is the difference between a Vector Editor and a Bitmap Editor?

    Cave Story

    If you haven't heard of this game yet, you must only visit portal sites. A Japanese guy who goes by the name of Pixel(his real name is Daisuke Amaya) spent five years making it, and it shows. It's considered by many to be the best freeware game ever - a title that it deserves, considering its wonderfully retro graphics, great level design, complex story, and three endings. Get it here:

    Knytt and Knytt Stories

    These games are nothing short of art. It sounds pretentious, but there really is no other way to describe the delicate atmosphere imbued by their creator, Nifflas(Nicklas Nygren). They are adventure-platformers, with huge, completely exploreable worlds, beautiful muted graphics(not shiny or hi-def, but beautiful), appealing sounds and music, and logical complexity. Both can be downloaded from Nifflas' site:
