OK really dumb question - what kind of game is this and how do you join in? I know if I have to ask it's probably not my kind of game.

Terri, Half-Life is a shooting game, and you have to have Steam installed along with the deathmatch game. Probably not the kind of game your in to (considering all your time spent with BFG and GH,) but any and all GOTD members are welcome to come. We play to have fun. It's more of a fun interaction than a competition. None of the prizes being offered will have anything to do with skill during the game. I will be awarding prizes based on other merits that the group was built upon (camaraderie, participation in talks, and a basic showing of good sportsmanship.) If nothing else, you're more than welcome to join us in honor of our friend G@rgoyle =) If it's something you seem interested in, let me know and if you don't have a copy of the deathmatch, I will be more than happy to purchase one for you =)

Thanks so much for the offer but from the description, it doesn't seem like a game I would enjoy. Have a good time everyone.

It occurs to me now, almost 1 hour before game time......password will be cholon. Hope to see many of you there =)

Hi Chip; the game did proceed about 10 to 20 minutes late, but I made a mistake and wasn't able to set up a private server initially. Also, I’ve not worked out how to create a link to the server from the community page. There was a bit of a panic on from my end as I’d neglected to mention I would be playing the game, which means me disconnecting my router. Disconnecting the router obviously means none of the other computers in the house would go online. I'd totally forgotten to mention to my wife that I'd be disconnecting the router; unfortunately she needed the internet to finish off preparing some lectures for her classes in the morning, so I had to drop out of the equation for over an hour of the remaining game time. As an alternative I connected to an empty server half way down the public server list; hoping that it would remain free of non-giveaway team members. Unfortunately it didn't and while I was away we got some heavies playing who basically pawned everyone.
One of the aims of these games is to bring together like minded gamers who enjoy games such as Half Life 2 (and other games), but without the idiots that seem to inhabit virtually very public server out there - you know the type I mean. Anyway, these guys were apparently (from the messages I received from Wizzard) just spawn camping and raping the spawns all the time.)
By the time my wife had finished her work it was 00.45am (GMT) with only 15 minutes left of the official, time we'd set.
Before I jumped back in game I decided to try one more time to set up a private server and realized where I’d gone wrong. I'd used the wrong dedicated server. Once I booted up the correct one it was a simple step to configure the server. so I PM’ed all those who were left. Unfortunately three including Wizzard had to leave, but it still left four of us playing for another half an hour. That last half hour was a lot of fun from my perspective.
Anyway all that said, because of the problems I'm going to run another server in two weeks time. I realize I've had a lot of teething problems, but I can promise I've got everything sorted now, so hopefully if we get the same turnout as last night we should be able to play some team death match as well, which I think is much more fun than straight death match; though we will play both games. Wizzard also gave me the codes to set up a moon like gravity which we could play for a few levels. Sound like fun to me.
I also suggest we play some rounds where we restrict the use of certain weapons, for example one round we could just use the gravity gun (We did this about 6 months ago and had a lot of fun) or just use pistols etc. I'm sure you get the picture.

Hi byront. The way to join is firstly to make sure you've joined the Steam group, then you can just click on one of the Steam group members that are playing (from the Giveaways groups Steam page) and select ‘join game’. The easiest way though is to become friends with one or more of the giveaway steam group. If you want to invite me to be a friend my Steam name is Whiterabbit01.
Anyway, I'd like to thank all of those who turned in last night. I'm really sorry I made a mess of it all, more so because it was a tribute to G@rgoyle; (I blame the opiates that I have to take as always), but hope that you did enjoy what game play ensued (despite the non-group members that took advantage of you all). I also hope you will all join me again in two weeks time, same time, but maybe a Saturday rather than a Sunday. Please leave feedback as to which day you prefer. I'll leave it as a Sunday game for now, but for those living on this side of the pond (Europe) or those over in Asia, the timing may be a little late, so Saturday may be a better choice. I’m going to announce it on Steam just as soon as I've finished this post. Please do leave feedback so that I can change the day if necessary.
Again, thanks to you all for being part of the group I'm hoping to return to regular games; not as regular as when we first started last year (unless there are others willing to run some servers as well), but at least once a month or maybe twice a month.
That said there are a few of the group that have been meeting on a weekly basis to play Left 4 Dead and/or Left 4 Dead 2. If you're interested in playing that game, we can set up a game any time you fancy playing. I'm usually available from around 11pm GMT most nights to play for 2 to 3 hours; (sometimes a little longer, or if you like for an hour)
I'm hoping we can expand the games to other genres such as racing sim’s. Dirt 2 or Need for Speed: Shift are two very good candidates fort his, though I'm happy to play older games. I have most racing games from the last three or four years plus some older ones (I've given most of the older ones a way) plus flight sim’s. (I have quite a few of those as well) . There’s always the possibility if the group grows further that we may have games running all the time. :) If there are enough members interested in setting up a server for a couple of hours here and there visiting the Steam page may become a social event (lol)…. What I can say on that score is I was part of a small group who did this several years ago. We used to play virtually every night and had a brilliant time.
Please let us know what games you fancy playing. I'm sure there's going to be at least a few giveaway members that will have a copy of the game that would like to join you in a game.
For me the primary aim of this group is to have fun. I'm not looking to score one over on anyone. I'm not into pawning everyone or getting the top score, or for games that give you un-lockables to score for that purpose - I’m just there to meet like minded gamers and to form online friendships and of course to have a blast.
I've said previously, but will say again. If we get enough regulars playing I will subscribe to a team speak serve because voice comm’s can add so much more to a game. It saves having to stop your game to type out a message (which is often missed by everyone anyway), and enables team based games to come into their own because you can create channels that only your team can use. (I used to play Americas Army with several online friends about 4-5 years ago and we always used Team Speak. It really added another dimension to the game.) That said some games such as L4D and HL2 - Death match do have voice comm’s - we just haven't used them yet. (I think team speak is better though because you can create lobbies for those wanting to take a break from the game, but want to remain connected etc).
Anyway, my vision (and Wizzard’s, whose idea this originally was) is to gather a group of decent and like minded community members together and have some good times playing games.
Do join us. :)

Hi Terri,
Honestly the game isn't about the shooting, its more to do with a bunch of gamers enjoying themselves. G@rgoyle for example was in her mid 80's and she loved playing the game. She'd never played this sort of game in her life, but decided to check it out and loved it. :)
I'm not sure whether you can still get free copies of the game, but its worth checking. You have to have an ATI or an NVidia graphics card to be eligable for the freebie. you can also get anothr HL2 game that has a singleplayer element to it. That game will give you an idea as to what the game is like (though playing agains computer AI bots isn't the same as playing with real people. :)

Please let me know if you will be able to join the game, and also your preference for Saturday or a sunday game; thanks.

Thanks for the reminder on that Deserthead. The links are posted all through out this thread but never a bad idea to refresh it every now and then.
Great reminder Violet, I know I'll be watching if I'm home that night *stinking wedding is taking up all my free time lol* So in answer to Stephen's question about Sunday, I'll be busy either not home or watching the game lol....gotta see The Who play if nothing else. They are one of my favorite bands.

So Saturday would be a better day? Then again maybe we should play the following week (13th or 14th) - Oh Valentines that weekend. Tell you what. Let me know when its best for the majority. I'm easy whenever..... :) I'll see what we have over the next week, then we can book a firm date. :)
Thanks for the confirmations about the freebies. Well worth getting IMO. I wouldn't have bothered if wizzard hadn't have suggested we get together for a game last Spring. Good on ya Wizz.

Saturday or Sunday, this week or next, any day will do me.Don't watch the American brand of football so I'm not too bothered about that.Regarding the freebie games, that's what got me started on Steam, good value at the price!!

Saturday's are much better days for me to play as I usually spend Sundays with the family.
Posted 14 years ago # -
I'm sorry if I sound like an idiot who is ill informed on news, but are you wizzard, g@rgoyle's grandson? And what happened to G@rgoyle?
Again, sorry, I really am dense :).Posted 14 years ago # -
Hi Webmaster; no Wizzard isn't G@rgoyles grandson. He lives in America and She lives in The Netherlands and Belgium (not that that means they couldn't be family). We met G@rgoyle when she volunteered to create a synopsis for all the games we've posted since the free games project started. She used to religiously update the synopsis as and when we posted new games. (She also created the browser game synopsis).
We got to know her much better when we started running weekend servers, starting back in April last year. She used to attend every meet and loved to play. Both me and Wizzard (as well as other giveaway members) used to chat to her for long periods; she was a well loved woman. When she started to play online with us she called herself 'Great Granny', which led to us discovering she was well into her 80's, which is when the grandmother feelings were born. She was a keen (and very knowleagable) computer nerd (meant with respect, not in a derogatory way) , as well as a motorcycle enthusiast; (she had four Motorcycles still in use in her garage)and was well into playing HL2 - I also played Red Orchestra with her for a short time when I first purchased it. I had two of those Steam offers where you get full access for several days, but she found that one reminded her to much of the war. She was a teenage girl at the time and remembers seeing some aweful things happen. She said to me that the game was so realistic all those memories came flooding back, so we stopped playing that and returned to HL2 - Deathmatch.
Anyway, the last time I played HL2 with her over 4 months ago, she'd just been convalesing from some minor surgery, but I remember her saying there had been some complications and she had to go back in hospital for a few days. That's the last we've heard from her. The games synopsis, which she wouldn't let anyone help her with hasn't been updated since about the same time as I played the last game with her..................
I've worked with elderly peple and know how fragile they can be following surgery; especially if complications arise. We are very worried about her , but don't want to say any more. We are just hoping that she will return, but it's looking more and more unlikely. :(

There's no need to call yourself ill informed, or an idiot. How were you to know. :)

Due to a big superbowl game tonight (Sunday 7th Feb). The Half Life Deathmatch will run next Sunday 14th Feb instead.

lol that's valentines day buddy.
Posted 14 years ago # -
Next Sunday fine with me,more time for a practice as my reactions have slowed with age.
Posted 14 years ago # -
lol, know what you mean Deserthead. I play some games on a LAN with my son and I just cannot keep up with him. Even solving the puzzles that crop up in some of the games, he's miles ahead of me. lol
It will be great to see you there.
It's a shame we had to cancel last nights game, but I do think a lot of the guys would have been watching the super Bowl. I was really surprised to see it live on one of our UK channels as well. I've never watched Super Bowl, but nearly did just out of curiosity; however one of the latest episodes of Heroes clashed with part of the game and I wanted to play some L4D online so missed it, lol.

I'm not watching my dates at all. Next Sunday is Friday 14th. So it may be wise for me to change the date yet again to the 21st Feb.
Wizz has already said he can't attend on the night. I'm looking for a big turn out so that we can try some team deathmatch plus do some moon walking etc, so the 21st sounds like a better idea.Posted 14 years ago # -
That just means an extra few days practice,as mentioned before, any day will do me.Will watch this space for future developments.
Posted 14 years ago # -
Re-DLing HL2:DM now so that I can get in on the 21st, had to re-format, so I couldn't make the last.
Here's hoping that the time that the server goes up isn't monday morning for me, cos that'd be a no-go.
(First day back at Uni - 22nd)

Just bringing this back to the front page.
the game will start at 11pm GMT and end at 1am GMT tonight sunday 21st of Feb
The server password will be cholon.
I will be adding a few fun levels wherby we fight in a moon like gravity (thanks to wizz for the coding) and we will if enough community members turn in play some team deathmatch. Several rounds will also be limited wih respect to the weapons you can use; for example we could have a round using only pistols or shot guns and another using only the gravity gun.
the last time we did that those who played had a brilliant time.
The aim of the evenings play is to have fun; it's not a competition.
I hope to see you all there tonight.
Regards
