I’d forgotten it was Friday today, which normally means I don’t post games over the weekend, but as I’d already prepared most of the document before I realized (It was actually checking my PM’s and finding one from an Admin telling me what tomorrows game will be before it twigged, lol) Anyway, I’ve done the review for the mornings game and thought I’d finish off this set of games. It occurred to me that I’d promised a bumper package of games over the three main days of Christmas, but because of the problems I’d had with my computer, that hadn’t happened. So I’ve decided to post the following games for Saturday even though we are getting a game. It should make up for the shortfall from me. Though we have had games from both Wizzard and reverseOrder.

I was supposed to have posted Wings of Fury with BlueMax 3D, but the computer crash sorted that out; still it was meant to be posted over the Christmas period, so I hope you don’t mind getting another flight sim so soon after the other. I have another one which I consider the best, but I’ll save that for a rainy day I think. The second game is a boulderdash clone called Boulder Rocks. It’s very well made and plays well, though you only have keyboard controls to move your character. Watch out for those falling boulders. :)

I’ve got an announcement to make concerning the games project. We will have yet another member joining the team as of next week. The Webmaster PM’ed me today to ask if he could help. He particularly wants to post DOS based games and will be doing the same as reverseOrder and posting additionally to myself and Wizzard. That means we will have certain days where you are always guaranteed at least two games. Provisionally The Webmaster will be posting his selections on a Monday or Wednesday, and reverseOrder on a Friday, both however have the option to post more games if they wish. Then myself and Wizzard take weekly turns at posting. We have a good team now, that I’m sure are going to bring you a good variety of games. Apart from all the old classic DOS games that Webmaster will be posting (though myself and Wizzard will still be posting these as well because there are hundreds of the blighters, lol), reverseOrder will beposting mainly independent gaming fettaval entries and student games and Wizzard specializes in the unusual, so we cnan expect a great variety of games each week, more than enough to suit most community members needs. On top of all these games there’s masses of commercial quality arcade games to be had for free from the weekend game giveaway, a daily free game from Gamehouse (if you don’t mind the adverts), a monthly free game from Alawar, and there’s at lease 80 good free (commercial elsewhere) games from Gametop and FreeGamesPick. (I don’t include sites like iWin and MyPlayCity though because I don’t trust them).

I ask that if anyone else is interested in joining the team that rather than take a specific day to post themselves they send details of games they find to me. I will always ensure that they are credited with the finds. I think any more team members will just complicate things. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

    Boulder Rocks 3D: (6.96Mb)

When opening up the link, you may find the page is in Polish. Just click on the Union Jack flag to get the English version. There are Polish and English versions of the game. Here’s what the author has to say:

    Quote:

Boulder Rocks! 3D is a remake of old, famous game Boulder Dash. Original game has been created in early 80's last century and it has been developed for many platforms, including most popular 8-bit computers.

BR!3D is based fully on its predecessor. But the graphics and sound are made for todays computers, so flat pictures has been replaced by 3D objects with added a few special effects. But all of it is still similar to original game and lets you for as good gameplay as original!

Because of basing on old game, there is still ability to return to old years. Using a few function keys you can adjust the game look to your requirements. Every effect can be enabled or disabled separately.

Game rules needs no detailed description. As the Rockford you must pick up needed diamonds and go to exit before time runs out. There are many obstacles on your way - rocks, walls or monsters. To kill the monster you must drop a rock or diamond on it or let him go to lava which kills them. When butterfly dies, it changes to 9 diamonds. In many caves there is no needed diamonds and you must "create" them by killing butterflies. There is another method of creating the diamonds - magic walls. When a rock will fall into magic wall, it will change to diamond. Be aware that falling diamonds will change to rocks!

Lava expands until there will be too much of it and then it will change to rocks. But if it cannot expand because it's closed in any area, it will change into diamonds! Lava can't kill you but it can trap you.

You'll find expanding walls too. If it has a free space near, it will expand as much as it's possible. Walls can be destroyed by near explosion of monsters. The only indestructible element is the steel wall.

Detailed description can be found in game help after installation.

This game is also a resumption of game Boulder Dash available on this website. BD stays here now only for historical reasons.

There’s no installer so you’ll have to unzip the game to wherever you wish it to go then create a desktop and start menu shortcut. If you’re not sure how to do this, especially the start menu short cut, you’ll find a short tutorial in the games discussion forums around page 7 or 8 I think.

There’s a very similar freeware game called Supaplex which you can download from the following address. I kept getting an error, so cannot guarantee the efficacy of this file, but checking it out over on You Tube there’s loads of videos been posted, so some people must be getting it to work. I do think comparing what I’ve seen of Supaplex from the videos and the Boulder Rocks game I prefer the latter.

    Cartouche 2.2Mb)

This is a mouse controlled game, though it’s really only suitable for playing in a window. You can open the window to full screen, but the game remains the same size.

Cartouche is a variant on the popular Match-3 game category. Line up 3 or more similar tiles to produce a match, which vanishes and makes room for more matching. What's different about Cartouche is that you can match on either the hieroglyphs color or on its symbol. This adds a bit more complexity to the usual Match-3 strategy and hopefully provides a refreshing change for Match-3 fans.

    Trismania: (2.31Mb)

This has a full installer, but no shortcut is placed on the desktop. You can access the shortcut from the start menu. It’s easy enough to create a desktop shortcut by right clicking on the shortcut in the start menu applications list then selecting send to, from the drop down menu select desktop (create shortcut). However, before you can use the shortcut, you must configure the game by clicking on the set up shortcut which is also found in the start menu.

I’m not really into Tetris as I played it out years ago when it first came out on the game boy back in the early 90’s. I used to play it till I got a head ache from looking at the tiny game boy screen. The music still haunts me to this day, lol. Anyway, I was surprised to find myself actually enjoying this one. It’s very challenging with it’s three dimensional game arena.

The controls are simple, You use the arrow keys and the WASD keys to move in the four directions, left, right, forwards and backwards and also to change the orientation of the moving blocks. This is a brilliant game for helping your children with their spatial awareness.

The following was written by the author, but it was in Polish, so the translation hasn’t come over perfect, but it’s still okay. I’d have edited it, but want to spend some time playing some games tonight before I turn in as I’ve not played any for a few days apart from some I’m beta testing.

In Trismanii original Tetris rules remained unchanged. In this game you control a flight klocka falling into wells. Block can be freely rotated and should be fit for the blocks lying in the wells so as to create full lines. Each full line disappears giving points, and all the pieces lying above this line obsuwają is down. The only difference between Trismanią a dwuwymiarowym Tetris is such that the player arranges a full three-dimensional plane of the wells, rather than individual lines. The exception is set to the size of wells to a depth of 1, which will do well to flat, and recalls the classic Tetris.

The game is virtually never end, it's in the "win", but the player's task is like the longest alignment blocks so as to never dosięgnęły top wells, which will no longer be a place for the next block. The second objective is to get as many points, which is rewarded by being placed on the list of the best players.

The game is divided into 20 stages. With the game time, in subsequent stages, the pieces are falling ever faster, which makes it much harder game because a player has less time for thought. In subsequent stages the player must also generate an increasing number of full lines to go further.

Trismania is quite flexible in terms of configuration of the game. The player can freely determine the size of wells, select a set of blocks, fill in random blocks well and start from any level of difficulty.

The most important settings are the dimensions of wells. If one of the dimensions of the base (X or Z) will be 1, the well will be flat, which is similar to the standard game Tetris. If the two dimensions will be larger, well able to Three-dimensional, which enriches the game, the need to lay the whole plane, not just individual lines. The third dimension (S) is the height of wells, which involves a number of blocks placed in the wells and the degree of difficulty (the less well, the more difficult game).

Instead of manually set each of the dimensions of a well, you can also select from a list of sizes. These measurements are finer dimensions of wells in other games.

The game also allows you to select one of the many sets of blocks. Each pack contains a specific number of blocks. Sets differ quantity and complicating blocks. In the simplest sets the pieces are flat, in the other part is the three-dimensional blocks, which allows for much more exciting game, but also raises the difficulty level.

Last option amending the rules of the game to bonuses. These are some surprises for the player, which appear from time to time, always before on the screen next fall klocka. Some may prove to be helpful, others will interfere.

A detailed description of the game is in aid to the game. I recommend the review in order to familiarize themselves with the rules of the game, types of bonuses and klawiszologią.

I’ve left the Polish words that weren’t translated, just in case a Polish community member psts the meanings for us.

Hey Whiterabbit, you said something about Alawar giving a free game every month. I went to the website but I can find it.

    Hi nnylrandyb16
You have to download their gamebox to get the free games. however it's unlike other developers game box as you don't need to use it to play your Alawar games. Though if you like using a games manager it also has the advantage over others because you can add any game to the game box. Once you've installed GameBox you should see a tab that says free game. This should change every moths, though it doesn't do most of the time. Still, it's a free 'commercial' quality game for free.

  5. Thanks reverseOrder.
By the way, just because it's DOS, doesn't mean it's classic. I've found many games that are incredibly good graphics. A soccer game that's all CGI for instance. Still, many of them are classic.

    Hi Midori,

Firstly, thanks for all the kind words you've made over the past months. I've noticed that all your posts that reply to my postings have been pleasant and courteous.

With respect to the games synopsis, I'll be making it even more user friendly sometime soon as I intend also adding a genre based list and placing all the games alphabetically. (I'm a sorter/lister, lol)

I think perhaps Alawar is no longer offering the free game with their gamebox. I just had to reformat my computer, and I went to their site afterwards looking for the gamebox download. It wasn't easy to find, since they no longer have it advertised on the front page, but the screenshots and description no longer mention the free game.

I didn't get to redownload yet, so I'm not positive.

Hi Whiterabbit. Oh, good! I was a little disappointed looking at the screenshots. But I haven't gotten to it yet; I have so much else to reinstall right now! I hope you got your computer fixed?

No! both my main computers are still offline. My main one has actually been offline since before the summer holidays, but my back up main which is just a little slower (dual 3GHz) was good enough for all my games so didn't bother fixing the main one even though the graphics card is much better. Now both are in need of repair :( (software issues only I think), so I'm forced to get them sorted soon as this computer wont play the latest games such as GTA IV and COD5 though it plays most.

with all the drugs I have to take, I find it hard to get down to fixing things these days. It's only when I'm forced to that I'll actually fix things now. So when I want to play one of the games I mentioned I'll make more of an effort. When my second main computer went offline last week this one hadn't been connected to the internet for ages due to a software glitch. I fixed it in minutes once I only had one decent computer left. I have a few others but they are only single core and a lot slower at 1.8GHz so not suitable for a lot of the games I've bought over the last few years. I intend putting them in the childrens rooms when they get a little older. We're waiting for them to move to secondary school (I don't know the equivalent in the US, but it's when they are aged 11, though by then the computers will be probably be obsolete and I'll have built myself a couple of quad core computers by then, so they will get these computers lol,

Hmmm - well, I guess I'm not quite so knowledgeable about computers; I couldn't tell you if this one was single core or how many GZ or anything of the sort, and I couldn't build my own, but I do hope you get it all sorted out. Mine apparently had a virus in a necessary driver, and when my virus scanner deleted it, it sent something into an endless loop, or so said the stop error I received. The computer just restarted over and over when I turned it on and trying to start in Safe Mode, it just hung forever at Mup.sys, so I glumly concluded I'd have to reformat. Having just this one computer, I couldn't procrastinate too long :-) - otherwise I might have, even without all those drugs. I'm amazed you manage to get so much written/done while taking them. In one way it was helpful; of course, I lost most of my giveaways, but, it's had several annoying little glitches I could never figure out that are finally fixed! (Now it has some new ones :-) - mostly having to do with permissions, I think.)......
Here it's called junior high or middle school. But I think I've gotten this thread off-track! By the way, I like boulderdash games, which is why I peeked at this in the first place, so I shall have to try Boulder Rocks, too.
