Wings of War is perhaps one of the best free games I’ve ever found (not including games like America’s Army an online first person shooter that I used to play a lot a few years ago), and it was thanks to a guy called Red Neck, who posted brief details of it in the game comments section last year when Sky Aces was given away. I followed it up because for a few years I’d been looking for a particular World War I flight simulator that I’d had the pleasure to play when it was released as a demo several years ago.

Anyway, I've decided to repost the game as part of the free game of the week project simply because it has become buried in the games discussion forums. I didn’t actually mention the name of the game when posting about it; writing instead "An alternative to Sky Aces". It deserved much more in my opinion. Without any more waffling, here's the download link.

You have to download all six files (that are found at the bottom of the download page, together with all the patches, then unpack the six game files using winrar to another file. (if you haven’t got winrar, a link has been provided on the download page to get a copy) Once they have been unpacked, replace the WoW executable with a no CD patch, then install the game to wherever you wish it to go on your computer.

The six files required are 125Mb each apart from the sixth which is 79Mb, so those on dial up will take some time to get all the files together, but I can assure you it is well worth the effort for this fantastic and easy to play flight simulator. The patches are small by comparison. There's a v1.2 patch, and two no CD patches one for the original v1.0 version and one for if you patch it to v1.2. It seems that some WoW community members still play the v1.0 version online, so if you update it to v1.2 you won’t be able to play those. There is both a single player instant action as well as a single player campaign to work through and it seems there’s a dedicated bunch of people who regularly play it online (which is where this game has come from.

If you decide to download it and have any problems installing it please just post your problems here and I’ll try and talk you through the installation again.

Installation Instuctions:

1) Create a folder on your desktop called Wings of War

2) Using winrar, unzip the files to the folder you’ve just created in the sequence 1 to 6. allow all files to be overwritten.

3) Once you’ve unzipped all six files to the folder replace the executable file labeled WoW, that looks like a set of wings with the No CD patch v1.0. (that looks exactly the same as the executable you’re swapping) You can back up the original if you wish, but I see no reason to)

4) Click on the set up file, which then allows you to select where you want the installation to be installed. Once this is done you’re good to go.
You’ll find a shortcut in the Start menu programs folder called Gathering which contains the game shortcut, online shortcut and a set up shortcut, though no uninstaller.

Looks like it is about 10 PM there in the UK so maybe you will have a chance read this. By the way Stephen the last two e-mails that I sent you were short to very short and they had some information in them but you might want to read. If you no longer have the e-mails cannot find what I am talking about, let me know.

"Wings of war" gave me a problem when I tried to downloaded from the website you mentioned several weeks ago. I sent an e-mail to the webmaster of the website but I never heard anything back from him.

I mentioned the problem above because I wonder if you have recently downloaded the game in its entirety and tried to assemble it. Please comment.

I repeat one request and that is to please post in a very conspicuous place the types of controls that can be used with each of your games.

I would like to "add great flying" in your game trailer. "Camtasia" does a wonderful job. The screen video is quite dark on my computer's display. There did not seem to be any way that I could brighten it.

I wonder if the darkness is due to the game itself, the trailer, or my computer screen. I would hate to spend hours downloading the game and then not be able see it well enough to play it.

Just wanted to add my two cents on Whiterabbit's choice of game, Wings of War.This is a great game and very addictive if you like a combination of flying around and shooting and blowing things up,has to be a guy thing.
The download is a little tricky and can take some time if your not on high speed,but defiantly worth the time.The game can be played with combination of mouse and keys,although I found that using a joy-stick made the game more enjoyable IMO.

In addition to Whiterabbit's links the one below has extensive info. on the game,such as adding more planes,or scenery and more.

I just D/L'd the game last week,the problem I had was that the game stalled occasionally,as if it were trying to catch up (buffer or vid card)I suspect.
Is this the problem you had? But my problems would be due to my paticular comp.
Also I'm on a laptop with OS/Vista Home Premium,but there was no problem with the D/L.
I also had this installed on my desktop with OS/XP/sp2 with no problem at all,but that was done several months ago, hope this helps.

All,

When clicking on the download link and then picking the first file at the bottom of the download page, I end up on a (dark) page that doesn't appear to have a button that starts the actual download.

Am I missing something, or do I need to register first for it to appear (Whiterabbit didn't mention this, so I'm not sure).
Can anyone please enlighten me?

Your right I just went to the site I'm not sure whats going on,read my post above.
When you click on any of the files,it takes you to the black page site and if you look in the upper left corner you see the file name and its number.But from there I am not sure whats going on.Will have to check this out some more.
Each time you click on a file from maine link it takes you to a page with the correct rar numbered file,meaning rar1,rar2,rar3,etc.but nothing else happens.
May have to wait untill Whiterabbit checks into it,He's the Guru.
As a result of this problem I take back everything I said in my above posts and blame everything on Whiterabbit, President Bush, and the declining stock market,hows that for some quick back tracking,Bwhahahahaha!!!

Good to see you back and trying to offer assistance.
You helped me a couple of times in the past and I REALLY appreciated that.
Sorry for all your problems. I would not wish anything like you're fighting on ANYONE, friend or foe!! My father died of the colon variety in 99, so I know a little about it.
I hope things progress in a positive direction for you from now on!!
I see from your post that you haven't lost that sense of humor. And that is definitely a GOOD THING!!

I'll get back to you on this one. It worked last time I downloaded these files a couple of months ago. I think you have to register to download the files; a fact that I'd forgotten.

All,

This is quite bizarre, I just went to the WoW site as indicated by Whiterabbit's Download Link in order to remind myself of the various WoW filenames (to Google them and find another DL site). I then clicked on the fileid=2686 link.

To my amazement - instead of my going to "the dark page" (scary ...) - I got a file selector popping up, and now the second file is downloading as I'm writing this - very strange indeed!

Give it a try, I would say.

I think one of the problems that may arise with these downloads is bandwidth use. When I tried to re-download a file after reading the above message about a black screen, the message I got was that I'd exceeded my download limit; that is from the web sies side as I've got unlimited bandwidth use with my own service provider.

Do let me know if you were successful or not. I could try and contact the people responsible (if some are having problems downloading the files) and see if I can upload the files I have to my filefront account so that there will be an unlimited bandwidth site where you can download the files from.

My advice to those who are having problems; please do persevere as this is a great game. Even if you've never played a flight sim before, this is easy to learn and once you've mastered flying (takes a few minutes at most), there's loads of fun to be had in either the campaign or instant action modes. For those who feel confident you could join one of the internet servers and try and beat the regulars. :)

I'm getting an error when I try to unzip file 2, "Data error, Data 1 Cab file is broken"
Although I am using 7-zip, I dont want to install Winrar just to unzip a game, happy with 7-zip....

Hi fullbug; it does state that you require winrar to unzip the files. 7Zip wont work. You'll find a link on the same download page as the game files to download a trial of Winrar, which will enable you to unzip the game. It's worth the effort in my opinion for this game because it's much better than any freeware game I've ever found (that doesn't include abandonware).

There is a link to a free version of winrar somewhere in these forums if you want to take the time to search for it.

First of all, 7zip works fine. Second of all, both WinRar and 7zip automatically extract data from all of the files downloaded, simply if you just extract from the first one, because they are .part.rar files, which is basically a .rar file separated into more than 1 (in this case 6) pieces. So, extracting data from each of the files will be useless, and a complete waste of time (plus create the error that fullbug mentioned). Also I believe the no CD patch for v1.0 is already included in the crack folder of the wingsofwar.eu folder. Verified by using Easy Duplicate Finder. Anyways, I could be wrong, but I'm very confident on this. Lastly, I appreciate your efforts (along with wizzard_of_oz) to bring free great games every GGotD-less day, and provide useful detailed comments on the Game Giveaways. I simply had to state this comment after reading your last one.

I will admit to being very slow tonight but I am not sure that lack of sleep is completely to blame for me not understanding what you just said in your post. If deem the information as being very important, would you please re-phrase your message?

(Whiterabbit I am already up to 7days and 6nights without sleep that means 1 more night without sleep to end this cycle in my 4+ sleep disorder - believe it or not. Should be coming out the journal "Sleep" along with a study on the toxicology of Xyrem)

Damn! I forgot to tell you anything about my problems trying to get the "wings of War" files from there to here. Difficult/hard/no good/bad, etc.

Plus at one point I was told that I am limited on what files I can download and the schedule is dependent on how many other people are trying to download the program, Now this is a true "bandwidth" problem.

Fellows, I don't think getting this one is going to be easy. About the best I can make out of what I was told, is for one person download the game and copies......???

Stephen it would be best if we could download this game from your website. I know that I wrote and told you about this one.

Boatman: I was correct. The correct spelling is "Xyrem" - the web has spotty information on Xyrem - the figures on deaths related to the smallest recommended doses are about 40% to 50% off. Clinic figures show double the number for deaths occurring at low dose. No deaths have been reported for the one subject taking 4.5 times the recommended dose. We will have to see what happens - his 7th night starts in 2hrs 15 min. You should want a videocam? OK by me

I have loved this game. I have been playing it ever since it was posted after the Sky Aces games was given away. It may take a while to download but it is worth it. The graphics are great and the game play is very addictive. I have gone back and played all of the levels many, many times now. The first three or four levels are the hardest in a lot of ways. Use the Pizzadox cheat to enable you to start on some of the later levels. Make sure though that you complete ground school as it will show you all you kneed to know to play the game (well almost). Once you have gotten better at the game you can come back and try the earlier levels again. Good luck and happy flying!

I really had no problems with downloading this several weeks ago, and all the files worked. Sorry some are having problems with it. Please persevere as it is well worth it. I keep checking an there seems to be a cap on how much can be downloaded every week. If loads of people are downloading it then maybe thats why there's a problem with it. All I can say is that you'll have to keep visiting the site to see if its available. In the meantime (when I have time as I still have Emails to answer from when my computer was offline), I'll try and get permission to create a new download for the files. (No promises though)

I downloaded this game yesterday with no problems following the instructions in Whiterabbit's initial post above. I also agree with My Alias Nothing that the No CD patch is in the 'crack' folder already included in the download. I extracted from each file downloaded so if someone extracts from just the first file and it works, let us know. (My Alias Nothing, I was unsure if you did that or if it was a theory on your part)

I played for a little while yesterday but did not do well using keyboard controls so I dug my Logitech Wingman joystick out of mothballs. Unfortunately, I did not do any better. :(

fullbug: I can understand if you don't fully get my post, and want me to clarify, but seriously, it clearly states on my first sentence that it works fine on 7-zip.
HOSS: As for my theory, I can prove it. If you use the latest versions of WinRar, and 7-zip (can be earlier ones, but I'm 100% sure on the latest), simply extracting part1 will extract everything else. Comparing the file size of the folder after extraction, and all of the archives (RAR to be exact), you can understand. Also, I have successfully installed the game, and it runs perfectly fine.

Now, just to clarify (even though if you read my post correctly, and carefully, you'll get the idea), here is my theory (edited):
1) First of all, creating another folder on the desktop isn't really needed, because once you extract the archive, it'll be all in a folder of it's own. The folder is labelled: wingsofwar.eu
2) 7-Zip and WinRar both works fine.
3) You simply have to extract from the part1 file, WinRar/7-Zip will do the rest.
4) The No CD patch for v1.0 is already included in the crack folder.
5) #2-3 of this theory should work for all .part.rar files, and even other archives (zip, cab, etc). Why?, because those files are simply an archive splitted into multiple pieces (in this case 6).
6) I have encountered these files before, and had no problems working with them using my theory.
7) Do follow #4 of Whiterabbit-ul's instructions properly, don't click anything weird.
8) Great game, glad it works on my dated pc.

Although I have posted quite late on this, but please do understand that it's the weekend, and I like sleeping more than usual, like others.

Thanks for the clarification My Alias Nothing. I would however, suggest that the desktop folder is still a good idea for anyone that feels that they may have trouble finding the wings of war folder after the download. (those less tech savvy)

I registered for the Wings of War website listed by Whiterabbit several weeks ago. After some delay my registration was approved. Immediately after registering I tried to download the files for Wings of War.

As soon as I started to download the 1st file I got an error message that said that my 7 day download limit had been reached. The exact wording was "7 day download limit reached". Just below the error message was a line that said "File download, even for sites that have exceeded their traffic limit". This line was actually a link that took me to
"http://kc4cop.mylivepage.com/pay file

Thus began the sales pitch. I had not download anything and yet I had reached my 7 day download limit. According to the data on this page, neither the free nor the beginner plan (at $4.99 US) would be sufficient to download the complete Wings of War game. To be able to download the program all I would need to do is subscribe to the professional plan at $10 per month US.

I returned to the website approximately 10 days later and I logged in as a registered user. Remember, I have never downloaded anything from this website. As soon as I tried to download the 1st file for Wings of War I got the error message saying that my "7 day download limit had been reached".

Yesterday and again today I tried to download a file on the Wings of War webpage only to receive once again the error message saying that my "7 day download limit had been reached".

Thus far I have never downloaded anything from this website. What I have accomplished so far is I have created my own free website hosted by the same website publishing the Wings of War downloadable (?) files. To publish anything to my free website I have to pay money, so far an undisclosed amount, and nothing further is being said on how to download the Wings of War program.

I have written the webmaster and suffered through a grueling set of experiences on this bizarre website. Although I have written the webmaster twice, I have not received a single reply to any of the questions that I asked him. What I have gotten from the webmaster are short, but prolific, comments that say he (the Webmaster) wants to be "my friend" and somehow link my new friend to the free website he gave me.

None of this makes any sense at all to me.

I am beginning to wonder if those of us that are trying to download the Wings of War program are all actually going to the same website. I am not seeing the same thing that others have been saying that they saw and no one has reported receiving any of the error messages that I get bombarded with each time that I go to the website.

From the trailer that Whiterabbit published, I can tell that the Wings of War program is a game that I would enjoy playing. However I do not think that I would enjoy playing the game enough to keep plugging away trying to download still the 1st file making up the program.

Hello Bigun,

As you can read further up this thread, I initially also experienced this problem.
However, when I tried again later, I was actually able to DL a total of three of the files. When I tried to DL file #4 the DL speed had dropped to around 20-30KBit/s, so I stopped the DL intending to try again later.

Since then I been getting the same messages as you have, which I believe - as Whiterabbit does - are down to a (lack of) bandwidth. To be more precise, it appears to be a contention issue: too many people sharing a limited amount of bandwidth.

My advice to you is to keep trying! Failing that, we both may need to take Whiterabbit up on his offer to DL the files from his filefront account.
