Here are three games to keep you occupied for the run up to the weekend’s games, and they will hopefully be my last posting until Sunday around midnight (assuming we get games on Saturday and Sunday). The first is a straightforward platform game called Super Mario Blue Twilight DX and the second is a platform shooter called Blip and Blop – Balls of Steel, which is quite addictive, and the third one called Zelda Forever, is a platform puzzler which I wasn’t going to post for reasons I explain below, but decided to for those who have requested more puzzle games.

Super Mario Blue Twilight DX: (25.25Mb)

I don’t know about you, but I’ve come to enjoy playing the odd platform game; mainly as a break from the power games such as Crysis, Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed, The Tom Clancy games and Need for Speed Pro Street, because they actually drain a lot of mental energy when playing them, so a simple platform game like the one you can get for free called Super Mario Blue Twilight DX, is just what the doctor ordered, lol. It comes under the banner of official demos on the filefront download site, but it is actually a full version game. There may not be masses of levels, but the ones you get should keep you entertained for a while; but just in case they don’t, I’ve added two more games for you to download. :)

    Quote

Super Mario: Blue Twilight DX is a non-profit unofficial fangame based on the Mario universe. It combines elements from 3D Mario titles with classic, 2D gameplay, set in Halloween-themed levels. The original game, Super Mario: Blue Twilight (MarioWeen for short) was developed in the span of two short weeks and released on October 31st, 2003. MarioWeen DX was slated for an October 31st, 2004 release, but what was once a small upgrade (an extra level and an extra boss) quickly snowballed to a much larger game that pushes the clunky little game to it's limits.

    Features:

    • 7 levels, plus 4 hidden levels
    • 4 bosses, plus 2 hidden bosses
    • Concept Art, Scrapped Levels
    • Text-based Director's Commentary
    • Plenty of Easter eggs
    • Revised level designs over the original game
    • Date activated secrets
    • Playable Luigi

The MarioWeen 1.04.1 patch was released to fix a couple of bugs and complaints people have had about the game; as well as adding a new option to change the screen resolution, for those of you with larger desktop monitors. Thankfully the patch has been fully integrated into this version of the game.
    Background Story</strong

It was a cool night at the Mushroom Kingdom. It was the sort of calm that always fell over the castle after the defeat of the Koopa King, Bowser. Most people were in bed or heading there - as the day's celebration had tired everybody out. Even Mario and Princess Peach were on their way to their chambers for some much needed rest. Suddenly, the sky darkened as fog swept the land out of nowhere - and the moon turned red. A gust of wind blew out nearby candles.
From the sky, came a winged gargoyle. With speed he swooped down, grabbing the Princess Peach tight in his claws - and shot off into the sky again; before Mario could even react. Unfortunately for Mario, there is no rest for the weary; he must save the Princess once again from the clutches of King Bowser! But was it really Bowser? Legend tells of a castle that appears only on Halloween night, filled with monsters and other strange demons. It's evil spreads across the land, turning the moon red. But such tales are only told to children, so that they fall asleep at night, right?

Blip and Blop – Balls of Steel: (43.4Mb) though you’ll need 126Mb for the install.

Blip & Blop is a free arcade 2D shooting game similar to games such as Gryzor and Metal Slug. You’ll recognize some of the bad guys because they bear a striking resemblance to some well known computer game characters such as evil Snuffs, mighty Scare bears, vicious Snorkis and the terrifying Dorkemons, lol.

I wasn’t going to post the following game for a few reasons detailed below, but because I’ve been asked if I can post more puzzle games I decided to add it to the list. This game is a platform puzzler based on the Zelda franchise. It’s quite a good game, but there are two or three instances where you will need to watch what you are doing when you fist install and then start up the game, so as to prevent your browser being opened or a tool bar being installed.

Zelda Forever: (27Mb -36.7Mb required for install)

Care needs to be taken when installing this game; otherwise you’ll get a toolbar installed. When you run the installer and then click on the next button, make sure you uncheck the box that asks if you want the Zelda toolbar (Super Mario toolbar) installed. By default it’s checked, so if you blindly click to install the game you’ll end up with an unwanted tool bar (well, that’s assuming you don’t want it, lol). Once the game is installed you’ll find a couple of extra short cuts installed onto the desktop as well as the games short cut. (all three games install shortcuts in the start menus applications menu, though Zelda will be found inside the Banesoft folder..

On starting the game your firewall will (or should if you’ve got it turned on) pick up a phone home dialer, which, if you allow, will take you to the developer’s home site. I would advise that you block this immediately so that you don’t have to worry at it when you play it in the future. To start the game you’ll find a pane attached to the right side of the main window. It says press here to start. That’s all you have to do to start the game. The menu options cannot be seen on the main page. They are accessible by using the ‘down’ arrow/cursor key to select options or quit. You can also select Introduction watch an intro’ to the game; which is worth watching at least once. The link that says Secret Coins also needs to be avoided as it takes you to another site that looks like one of those gambling sites, though it’s disguised as a free games site - (which hasn’t been classified by the Web of Trust – WOT yet, so I can’t comment on its safety)

You’ll find all the key bindings to play the game are listed in the options menu. Apparently the game also support a joy stick. :)

    Quote:

Welcome to the world of Legend of Zelda. Our brave hero, link, a little elf will defend beautiful princess Zelda and her kingdom. Evil ghost sarcophagus comes to their planet and wants to disrupt their peace and harmony. Enter the world of this colorful logical game here everything is possible. Over 100 levels to complete, enormous world map, secrets, and atmospheric music.

Stephen, It has taken me a couple of days to download these games, and I have only played the first 2 so far, but they are great games. I'm very impressed with them. Thank you so much.

Installing Zelda looks so involved, I haven't done that yet, but I will soon as I have got the Blip and Blop bug out of my system.

Hi Nola, I'll have to send you all the big games on a disc sometime. I've got enought to fill a DVD lol. It must be a real pain working with dial up. I couldn't do without broadband anymore because I download so much every week. The largest download I've ever downloaded was around 2.4Gb, which took a few hours to download. I'd love a 10Mb connection, but the extra cost above the connection I have which is 4Mb is prohibitive. Definitely not worth the extra cash just for a faster download speed. Anyway, the connection I'm on isn't really 4Mb because I'm quite a long way from the provider.

    ref: "Zelda Forever"

WR I caught the remark about the js. I think that have both up to playable levels (90% - 95%).

When Zelda was first released, I had to get my daughter to show me where to go, how to get there, and what to do once the target was reached. I will show her that I don't need her help. I am going to practice. Where are the "cheats"?

How long did it take you to sniff out all of rabbit traps in the game? Very good work.

    Mr. Rabbit:

I can not get Zelda to run. It keeps blinking on the main option page - only responding at all after I have pressed the down and right arrow keys 2385 times. Do I need to do something special?

I had to go to the task manager to exit the menu and ultimately the game.

Why does something like this always happen to me?

Are you real? How do you keep the eggs in the Easter basket when you hop? I think that the real Easter rabbit would know the answer to that question. But I could be wrong about that too. Dammit!

I was looking for some online games for my daughter and found these for anyone interested in online mmo's http://corp.outspark.com/games.php . She's 14, but likes ones that are made for kids. For right now she ended up going with,___,for now.
    http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?PART=/Main

Does anyone know of similar games? I had been looking at online games I like lately and there are tons of free ones and now that I started looking at the kid ones, which there a bunch of those to, I am feeling overwhelmed. She's been wanting me to get SimCity Online, but I know they get a to real on it, so I've been dragging heels. Do they make a one similar to it, but free?

Sorry to change the subject a little rabbit, I just didn't want to start a new post for a simple question and since this one was more related to kids games.

    Hi Bigun,

I'll get back to you on that. I'm really exhausted and need to turn in for the night. Monday is a busy day for me with Hydrotherapy in the morning and my p.a hanging around for most of the day (which I don't enjoy as I like my personal space - but she is invaluable at times)

    regards

    Stephen

p.s.Txnnok, I’m intending to continue with the online games thread sometime in the near future. It will include some children’s games. I thought I'd add a section specifically for children as both mine and their friends frequent several online games sites aimed at children and young teenagers. Though with everything else I'm doing at the moment it's been put on the back burner since posting a taster a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been concentrating on the weekday games project. Although I have enough for quite a few months I’m always on the look out for god quality ones.

There are actually hundreds of online games available to play now; to me a bewildering array, many of which are very hard to distinguish apart (though I'm sure a fanatic of any one of them would attempt to pull my head off for saying such a sacrilegious thing, lol.

    p.s Bigun:

Unfortunately the odd game does have problems closing down. I didn't realize Zelda was one of those. I'll have to play it in the morning and see what the problem with yours might be. If we can't fix it between ourselves I'll personally Email you some alternatives... :)

i can't seem to get Blip & Blop to even get to the download page. The only one it will go to (the link that will work at all) goes to a home page it looks like in another language. What am i doing wrong?? Thanks, Stephen, for all the great games!

That sounds like a good idea. I'll be happy to pitch in what I find out. I imagine going through just regular kid's games will take awhile much less looking at the mmo's for kids. I'm in no rush to start hammering through games, but I'm gonna half to do it anyway for my kid. Guess, I'm a little over protective.

Oh update, maplestory didn't work for vista, darn it. Most of the time all I have to is make them compatible with xp sp2 and they'll run, but not this round.
Just scrolled back and noticed you typed hundreds of online games, whew thats alot. My hats off to you Stephen.

This is a true story. I am very close to all of the individuals in the saga. The principal character is a young lady in her early 30s, married (divorce pending) with 3 children (ages 6 through 13).

The main character began "playing" a game called "Second Life" (like SimCity) sometime this past winter. We don't know exactly when because she hid her game play by leaving the house under many different false pretenses and spending hours in the bathroom with her new gastrointestinal pathology - self diagnosed and as false as everything else.

By mid-spring everyone knew what was going on. Yet, she continued denying everything. She was addicted to computer use and "Second Life". The "Second Life" game became real in all aspects. She converted real U.S. dollars in to the Second Life (SL)play money - and has spent several thousand dollars (real)on make believe vacations. Among other things she purchased a make believe house. She is paying out a little over $600 a month in maintenance fees on her make believe house and lawn. She has purchased three sea gulls and an unknown number of waves for her ocean front water.

The list goes on seemingly forever. The tragedy may never end. She deserted her husband, children, and medical practice. These things have been replaced by a make believe marriage to a person that she only knows through her SL Internet game.

I have seen simular cases to the one above in my medical practice. None of those cases have been as severe as the one above - or have they?

Think Mom. Think hard about the few things that you have written. Are they normal?

These games are getting scary. I have noticed a trend towards giving many of these online games away for free, but you only get the basic package. To take advantage of the many intricacies of these games you have to buy extra's which do mount up. The peioole running these games must be making a killing once they've recovered the initial start up costs and paid off the developer of the game.

The story you retell above Bigun, is really sad. I do hope the young lady sorts herself out.

I am glad you brought that up Bigun. There was a reality game like SimCity that I forgot about and it's free. Its called Entropia. What made me think of it was the second life that you were talking about. A guy who plays it has an online character called Neverdie and his wife has one called Gamerchick or something like that. Anyway she ends up passing way in real life(very sad, but true) and he uses the money to buy online property. I only skimmed the links, but I believe he has gotten back half his money so far. http://www.gamezone.com/news/05_09_06_01_16PM.htm

My main point was the immersion into the gaming world. He had a son and was out of work and spent a very large amount of money on a hunch. Your talking about gambling your kids life to on a game. I'm sure depression had something to do with but, wow a 100,000 dollars.

Being a father of a teenager doesn't allow me to be able to slip off to virtual world and stay there and I realize what I write around here isn't normal, but then my life isn't normal. If I went into a regular medical practice with my paper work, Mri's , and x-ray's and you didn't know why I was there, Your first thought would be that I was there to get narcotics, just because of the nature of the beast. I know cause I've done it before and was only there to get antibiotics for a throat infection.
I think it all boils down to why your are escaping.I escape into virtual world for pain relief, but I can stay involved into a games long enough to blur the lines of reality and fiction. It is a shame I can't, fiction is much more fun.

Just noticed, she was a doctor and lost control? Not that her being a doctor matters, it is just the amount of time she invested in her future to throw it all away.

It seems that most of us here use gaming for the same reason, i.e. pain relief. I find it really helps take me out of my world for a time, though I don't go for the online games that have all the hidden extras. If there was a one off charge like there is when you buy a DVD game, then that's okay, but the insidiousness of some of these online games really is worrying.

Hey Stephen, Do you like Call of Duty? Gamestop is giving beta keys out for the new one and you just need a trans action id, any trans id will work. I just used the receipt from purchase of the lich king reserve copy and it worked.
Anyway, if thats your style of game and you don't have a trans id, I'll send you a pm with one. http://www.gamestop.com/gs/landing/codwwbeta/default.aspx/

Hi Txnnok, Thanks for the heads up (and the offer, which I don't need). I've already sorted it. I pre-ordered the game two weeks ago and received a code for sorting out all the extras you can unlock by pre-ordering the game, plus got advanced access to the Beta test. I've been over to the COD5 web site and registered etc; however I'll probably give the Beta test a miss as I'm snowed under with lots of projects. I can't wait for it to be released though. If they have managed to improve on COD4: Modern Warfare it's going to be phenomenal.

I've been immersed in first person shooters for several years now and tend to buy all the games that are released. It's only recently that I'm starting to branch out again (late last year) and buying other genres. Especially racing, RTS and RPG's.

Hi Txnnok; yeah, you have to have at least pre-ordered the game to get access to the site (apparently). The code they send also unlocks some other material in game that wont be available once the game is officially released. (Though I think most of the advantages are for the multiplayer side of the game; for example you get to use a better grade of weapon right from the start, which will give you an advantage in game.

Hi thewembmaster, what are we not supposed to ask (idle curiosity, lol)

I was looking around on xbox live and they had a post there about the new COD beta keys.
It said that beta keys for the xbox 360 were sent to every one and that the beta for the pc was ready yet. Beta keys would be sent out when its ready.

Now I just hope there is a link or download spot. I'm not sure I want to get buy it. Hopefully, I can get a test run before its ready. I probably will, the last time I played one it was one of the first COD for xbox. I think. Anyway, I had a blast playing it. I also remember came with a headset.

I agree with you on that one. I pre-ordered Fallout 3 the other week, but wasn't impressed with the official trailers for the game. If I hadn't seen some unofficial footage of the developer talking on an American TVshow, demonstrating live game play, I doubt I'd have ordered it because the videos just didn't show any game play. The unofficial ones did:

But which one to play, lol. I'll have to post some screenshots once I've played for a few days.

Pretty cool game. The fact that it is also a sci fi based one makes me want Fallout more than COD. The third video was pretty the best one I think, but all were good. I definintly wanted to get it after I was through watching them.
Its pretty cool when the previews or scenes of gameplay can pull your attention like that. When they eventually get virtual reality going those style going games are going to be the best ones.
Oh almost forgot, The COD I mentioned I use to have wasn't COD, it was Splinter Cell. It was an ok game. It got me into playing shooter games.

Yeah the Splinter Cell games were great. It was a game called Line of Sight: Vietnam that got me into shooters. Despite it being several years old, it still holds its own with games that have only been out for a few years.

As for Fallout 3, I'm really looking forwards to getting it delivered. The place I buy them from sends out pre-orders early so I tend to get them up to 2 days before the release, so there's only arounfd 11 days to go for me.

It's actually being released ij the UK on Halloween, which is quite appropriate considering it's a horror shooter. i'm looking forwards to trying out the new combat system plus wandering around in a post apocalyptic environment. The developers are the same guys who made Oblivion, so we can expect to see some amazing scenery.

As for the virtual reality thing....I can't wait. Though I'm sure we are going to need some kick @ss graphics cards that don't exist yet.

    Cheats:

The following section is basically a spoiler, so if you don’t want to complete the game in a ridiculously short time I’d skip this section. If you get stuck at any time you may find some of the information useful.

If you start the game using the '/cheat' flag, you can
use the function keys (F1, F2, etc.) to cheat.
Hint:Blip has no cap on his head, giving him a slightly
smaller size and giving him improved dodging ability.
This is particularly important when fighting against
Lara Croft, as there are spots in which you are
    invulnerable if you are Blip.

    Cheat Codes:
    ------------
Start the game with the /cheat command line parameter to enable
cheat mode. Then, press one of the following keys to activate the
    cheat function.
    Result Key

    Hints:
    ------
    More firepower and easy lives:
    ------------------------------
In single player mode, you can get more firepower and more lives by
setting the controls of both players to be exactly the same. For example,
player one: Fire=Space and player two Fire=Space. By doing this, you can
focus on one blob, but the other blob will move with and shoot with you.
This kills more enemies and gets you to higher levels. A good idea is
to set the special key to a different button for each player so that you
can get double the cow bombs.
    Defeating Dario in fire form:
    -----------------------------
To defeat this Boss, dodge his fire attacks and only attack him when he is turned.
When he is weak he will use a very powerful combo which will cover the entire screen
if completed and take off two on you if it hits. He will launch various fireballs.
Try to get a hold of laser beams to take off damage. This Boss normally requires
two to four lives to kill.
    Weapons:
    --------
The six weapons available are the Gun, Machine Gun, Shot Gun, Flamethrower,
Laser Beam and Cow Bomb. Each has different strengths and weaknesses:
The attack speed rating is an estimate of about how many times that weapon
    shoots each minute.
Gun: Average in large crowds and weak against Bosses (weak damage).
Its attack speed is about 1000.
Machine Gun: Good in large crowds and average against Bosses (medium damage).
Its attack speed is about 1000.
Shot Gun: Weak in large crowds and good against Bosses (medium-high damage).
Its attack speed is about 45.
Flamethrower: Very good in large crowds and against Bosses (high damage).
Its attack speed is about 3500.
Laser Beam: Legendary in large crowds and against Bosses (very high damage).
Its attack speed is about 3000.
Cow Bomb: One hit K.O. in large crowds and ultimate damage against Bosses
(ultimate damage). Its attack speed is about 50.

    Secret weapon:
    --------------
If you complete a level without being damaged or you have full HP and have not
lost any lives after completing one level, you will get a Laser Beam (Blip) or
a Flamethrower (Blop) for the next level. They are very useful for bonus levels
to get extra help on the following levels.
