How to Post/Copy a Link

  1. I have noticed several people saying in the forums they don't know how to post a link. I am not sure what it is they don't know how to do but I am going to try to explain it. I think it is the fact people don't know how to copy a link.

I don't think this forum has the capability to do permalinks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permalink if it does I haven't figured it out yet. IOW you can only link to the ENTIRE thread....not a post WITHIN the thread. This can be annoying as you may have to read the entire thread to find out what the poster is referring to. But you work with what you got. :)

First you have to search for the thread you need using key words or tags they are called. Then you cut(copy)and paste the address into your post. That is it.

Here is how to cut and paste...Put your cursor at the beginning of the text/link you want to copy. Hold the left mouse down and highlight the entire text. Release the mouse. Hold the Ctrl + C at the same time. Then, go to the area you want to copy the text/link ....Hold the the Crtl key +V at the same time. The text/link should appear in that area.

As always, there is another way. Highlight the text/link. Right click on it; select "Copy" or "Cut"(Cut will remove it totally so I usually use Copy). Then go to where you want to add the text or link and right click once again and select "Paste" and it appears in your new post.

I hope this explains it clearly enough.

Delenn, since this is a multi-threaded forum and posts are ID'd in serial fashion as they're logged in regardless of which thread, one workaround to make use of permalinks (unless you've a key to the GAOTD mothership) is to search for the specific message (not an easy task with the primitive GAOTD search engine) and copy the shortcut/permalink you want from those results.

For example (and I'm not picking this - ahem - exquisite post because I wrote it) if you wanted to rush over and read a fictional golfing tale, you could go right to: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2390#post-15573

However, if you try 2390#post-15572, you're kicked to the TOF because that #post isn't in the same thread.

    hi, delenn13...
    thank you for the help!...
    but...
now i need to find a new excuse if i'm feeling lazy!...
.........at least if bits & pieces of text & links start popping up with my name attached, i can blame you for the trial & error process.........
    ;)

    Posted 5 months ago #
  4. RM, I figured that. Searching is not the cat's pajamas around here. But like I said.... you work with what you got. :) And I was trying not to get to techy. And yes, I read the golfing tale. :)

I think the main thing is..a few people are totally new and don't know how to copy a link/text to another thread. Back in 95, I remember, feverishly, typing stuff I could have just copied and pasted and I finally had someone over the house and they showed me how.

    Hi delenn13
I may be one of the members you have posted this for,as I have unsuccessfully tried to link the name of a thread in a post to try and help another member.
I know that when you copy and paste a Web add. as a link it does this automatically.(turn it into a link). For practice ,just tried it here with a thread title and the same thing happens as in the past,it just turns up as text and not a link. This is why the above post has no entry by my ID,I deleted the post as it would have made no sense.
Please forgive my ignorance in this matter,I'm a newbie to this, however your attempt to help the rest of us is greatly appreciated.

I asked the same question to BuBBy and he had me looking up HTML stuff,Yuuck!!!

  10. Ok. I think I know what you are doing. You are just copying the "Title" of the thread.
What you are trying to creat a hyperlink connected to a word. But you need the actual addy to do this.

[code]To make a text link add this code to your page (substitute your own info where you see bold text):
<a href="http://address you want text to link to"><strong>Text Goes Here</strong></a>[/code]

(I am hoping the html code works.)
Where you get the link is..... Up in the browser itself... The address line.

FYI, the only stupid question is..the one you don't ask. We were all new at one time.

  11. Ok..not exactly..but that's IT in a nutshell. Am going to have to play around with the HTML(how to make lasagna)

  12. *sigh* I could sit back and watch this all morning - but to put you out of your misery...

    http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/793

And if you want to know the link to a particular post - look at the end where it says "POSTED 10 MINUTES AGO" (or similar) following that is a # link - if you copy the link behind that - it is a permalink to that particular post.

For example - right now, this post is http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2492?replies=12#post-15995

  13. Mr. B, you were watching that train wreck. You just couldn't pull yourself away..could ya? You have to be more gentle with us folks over 50 and got arthritis in both hands.

Never heard of backticks either..deer or wood ticks but not back.

Oh better yet..the code is different from my other forum (talk about confusing the blond minbari)... Now I got to learn it also.

    Posted 5 months ago #
  14. If you are having to jump between HTML and BBCode and your blond brain is always 3 steps behind - I found this helped me a lot (besides I am incredibly lazy and typing less code usually means fewer errors)

    1. Use Firefox & this extension may make dealing with all of this stuff just a little bit easier.

Ok my brain is now going into tilt mode,I can see There's more studying of HTML in my future, For now I'm going to try and digest this.
Thanks to all for your time and patience,as said before I'm not the brightest bulb in the box.
    Thank's for stopping by BuBBy!!!

  16. I used to use Netscrape and now I use IExploder not sure if I want to learn another one. I keep a text in NoteTab of all my codes and the file always open on my desktop. Now I know why some of my codes don't work here..LOL So thanks, Mr. B

    Posted 5 months ago #
  17. scubaguy, it takes time. You will learn it. It's just basic HTML(how to make lasagna). :) 2 years ago I knew none..and I have been on the net since 95.

BubbyCo, I don't want to go all semantic on your head, but where I wuz larned to type, this wuz called a backtick (sans arrow underneath)
and what you is calling a backtick wuz called the gravé accent.

However, thanks for the bellylaugh for unintentionally pointing out that I've been here 2 cotton-pickin months and not ONCE have I ever pressed the freaking # to see where it led! Clearly, my powers of observation are exceeded only by my total lack of curiosity. :-)

  19. Rule 1 in the BuBBy getting started manual.

    1. Click on everything - check for smoke - Then you are good to go.

    :P

About the correct grammar nomenclature - I will pass on your concerns. I would suggest the entire line about 'code' is removed because most people would have no need to post actual html code (except me - in my example topic).

In space left vacant by the removal of the backticks reference - I would suggest a link to my topic with the heading "WTF is markup?" :)

Hmm, I guess you're one of those who read directions, too, eh? Opposable thumbs notwithstanding, my genes pretty much skipped primates and came directly from bulls in china shoppes. snort

huh. I just always copied the funny little character "`" from one end of the word "backticks". And don't feel bad, took me a lot longer and a solid clue-stick up aside the head from BuBBy to realize you could click on the thumbs up/down ratings to vote.

    As I said then- D'oh!

I still say most of the early votes follow BuBBy's rule #1 and the 'Oooh- Sparkly' effect.

I've also heard some folk call that funny little character a "fleck", not that there's anything wrong with that.

  23. Oh, I forgot to mention THAT part. I have to stand corrected..this forum does have permalinks. Sorry. I been here just a year and never knew it..So I am worse than you, RM.

And so, assuming you is also a guy type person, we have another winner in the oneupMANship olympics! The womenfolk will be so proud. :-)

Uh oh... I just noticed "homemaker" on Delenn's profile. You can't participate in this game! It'll skew the curve! :-)

I see RM has decided to enter in with his unique form of wit, LOL.
I'm just a little disappointed in myself for not being able to grasp HTML,which seems to be very basic computer stuff.
Being a scuba diving instructor in my spare time and having to figure out decompression charts to bring a diver up from a depth of 130 ft. safely or to figure out the buoyancy rate of an object to get it to surface, I should get this???
It's a good thing my students aren't reading this as it would certainly shake their confidence in me,even though I've been diving since 1968,However I will keep trying as giving up is never an option for me.
    Thanks again

Scubadude, we all have our weaknesses. For me, it's wishing I could dive deeper than the deep end of a pool; but being blind as a bat and having a case of post nasal drip on par with Great Falls after a tropical storm comes up the Appalachia means scuba equipment is equivalent to waterboarding torture. Methinks your students would rather have YOU guiding them up from depth.

RM, to goodgotd or me??? So I hope not me. "Delenn"=Babylon 5 And now..that crazy "french chick from "Lost" http://www.mirafurlan.com/index.htm or http://www.zlatna.com/celebration/mpubph.html

Scubaguy, your secret is safe with me. Just keep working on it..it will come to you. The light bulb will just come on. I taught beginner mIRC for 10 years. It will happen.

    Hi, scubaguy,
don't let those geeks ruin your life! To post/copy a link, you don't need to learn how to cook lasagna.
Only right click that # or the (blue) title on the first page of the forum and "copy link" or "copy as html" (I have the German version of FireFox and IE, so my translation may be not correct, but you'll find it) and paste into your text.
Even I got that, but if you should dare to write something in bold or italic - than lasagna ( I didn't got that ):
