Thanks to Idahl, who gave me a link to Gem Tower, I stumbled upon the TOJam site, which hosts the games and stories from the Toronto Indie Games Development Jam 2006 and 2007. This consist of several developers who get together and work together for a period of around three days and ‘develop’ some games. There are several games I found I liked from a list of too many to name. (though I’ve listed 14 from the 2007 TOJam. And some from the 2006 TOJam. All the games are free. You can check out the games via the following link:

    TOJam 2006:

    http://www.tojam.ca/games/default.asp

Bubble Thing, Kalashnikitty, Glucose Maximus, Heavy Weather, Solar Force, Super Hamster Air Combat, Sucka Pool, Alien Abduction plus loads more

    TOJam 2007:

    http://tojam.ca/games_2007/default.asp

XIQ, Box Wars, Noodle, Mohawk Warrior, Monkey Bannana Blitz, Urban Tactics, Yarrg, SpeakEasy (you need a microphone for this one), Trishade:aduro, Last days of the Earth, Clonequest (multiplayer), Tomorrah’s Grub, TOBam and more.

You will require one or more of the following for some of the games found on the web site:

    DirectX 9.0c+
    Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0+
    Microsoft XNA Framework 1.0 Refresh

Finally, a link from the TOJam site led to another game that was entered into the Independent Games Festival and won, called Gesundheit. Details and download links as well as links for the sound track (mp3) can be found by following the following link:

    http://www.underwaterbase.com/

Hmmm, not quite finished but the following is definitely ‘finally’. Another 29 freeware games from the Independent Gaming Forums. You can see screen captures of each game and ratings for each one by following the link below. Most I found too amateurish, but I did try a couple and like them. (Wrath of Transparentor and Boink, but they are just personal to me - the link below is for WoT, I forgot to save the link to Boink and am too tired to find it at the moment.)

You do realize that the TIGForums contest was to see who could create the lowest-quality game. That's why they called it "The B-Game Contest".

Yes I did, thanks though. I posted details of two from the forums that I thought were okay, most I found needed something else, though some had potential. I wouldn't put the two I chose in the same class (Boink and Wrath of Transparentor) as many games I've paid for, but ten these are only B list games, and free. The ones i chose actually did pretty bad in the ratings - Boink only getting 3% and Wrath of Transparentor getting 17%, but isn't that what makes the world an interesting place that some do consider even the s****iest games to be okay. :)

I always try to look for the positive in all games (you just have to read my reviews). The fact that someone has taken the time to build it is good enough for me. I may not like it; but then I wont play it but neither would I slam it, simply because humans by nature are quite sensitive to criticism, and, especially in the younger potential developers, I'd hate to discourage anyone by saying “hey your game that you put all that effort into is c**p. Though I also know that criticism can be a good thing; out rightly calling it rubbish isn't the way in my opinion; suggesting to the developer ways of improving a game are much better ways of criticizing in a subtle way (imo). That way we can nurture our up and coming talent without discouragement.

    Happy Gaming

I've just received Call of Juarez from a friend. It's not my normal FPS, as I prefer WWII and present day stuff, but a change is always welcome. Hopefully some f these small time developers will one day be working on the next generation of graphical wonders on from DX10

Apologies if I have posted in the wrong place but I just wanted to thank Stephen aka WhiteRabbit for the link to GameTop. What an awesome free site, Air Assault is basically AirStrike 3D with Mouseplay and completely gratis. There are also a lot of other great games that I recognise and will share with my nieces and nephew.

Thanks very much for your excellent reviews and the sense of community in sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for games. I hope that you are unperturbed by some of the petulant and ill conceived remarks regarding your reviews, I generally check yours only before making a decision on downloading.

    Cheers,

Thanks RobM for your kind remarks. I always try to give a reasonable and unbiased review together with any useful information that may improve the playing experience. I'm lucky enough (though for unlucky reasons) to ave loads of time to play games and enjoy helping others.

My reviews may not alway reflect the feelings of the majority because as I've said elsewhere in these forums I will always find the good in any game even if it's poor, though I will say whether or not it's worth the money, if it's not freeware, as i'd hate to be responsible for someone buying a game only to find it's nothing like i describe it.

Anyway, I do hope you enjoy your stay in the forums; there are some excellent people who post here regularly. And if you didn't get what you wanted with respect to some software or game from the giveaway project, you may find something in the Software Talks or Game Discussion threads...Oh yeah and in the Freeware Library. :)

    Have a great weekend.

I reread your post, Whiterabbit(I initially skimmed it) and I was shocked to find the links to GameTop and FreeGamePick. Did you know that GameTop and FreeGamePick are pirate sites? The games are cracks - the only difference from their sources is that the titles are changed slightly and that the sites open when you exit the games. I thought that you were above promoting warez.

    Hi Lockett,

Have you psted in the wrong forum??? I make no mention of Game Top here, Until replying to your post that is (see below for details) but you did.

Gametop is not a Warez site, but a sponsored site. The games offered are paid for elsewhere through revenues gleaned from their advertising and Forex . Sorry you feel you have to make a personal comment against me by accusing me of promoting Warez; (and therefore implicit in that accusation that I use such programs). I would never promote Warez, or cracks If they were these sorts of sites do you think the giveaway moderators would have allowed the comments to remain??? I think not. Read my reply to your insistence that these sites are crack sites in the comments section. - comment #66

You should be sure of your information before you post such remarks as they will undoubtedly put otherwise interested parties off visiting them and therefore stop them from gaining some excellent free games. ‘One’ of the reasons I post these links to such sites is because I know there are some community members who would otherwise not have the pleasure of downloading extra games as they are unable to afford them as I can. I also post them so that community members can check out similar games to those being given away.

I do not support cracks and Warez because the people who post such stuff take away valuable resources that would otherwise be better spent on game and applications development.

I personally spend an inordinate amount of money on software and games in particular, (I buy most of the fps games that are released regularly, as well as other genres such as RTS and RPG's as well as simulations. All usually on pre-order, so I pay premium prices for them, not the knock down prices you find a few yer dow the line, though I do buy some titles from such sources; usually games I though I wouldn't enjoy, for example I recently picked up Full Spectrum Warrior for the equivalent of less than $10, which three years ago cost more than $50 . I also received a full version of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for free a few weeks ago for renewing my subscription to fileplanets founders club, despite already having purchased it (I've already given that one away to a friend). That has obviously been purchased by the IGN corporation who own the vast fileplanet sysem (for those wh don't know file planet is a place to get all your mods and maps as wellas patches and oter files for all your favorite games (I have around 200G's of mods and maps just for Battlefield 2 alone). I personally think the price I pay for a game such as Crysis, CoD4, or Unreal Tournament (as well as other non fps games such as World in Conflict, Company of Heroes and other genres. {And that’s not counting the games I buy for my children who use consoles}) is money well spent, simply because of the amount of pleasure one can get from such games. I could easily spend four times as much treating my wife to one meal at a restaurant, whose pleasure is soon lost. Not only that I happen to own hundreds of Arcade games, but not those given away by the giveaway project, but from purchasing them from sites such as Alawar, Game house, Garage Games, Big Fish Games, and Reflexive (to name just a few distributors/developers I buy from). I always try to purchase games from new and upcoming games developers as well. When I discover them that is, as I believe it will go towards making even better games. – e.g. I've just paid for World of Goo on the basis of the freeware version Tower of Goo and I've also requested I be informed when the Crayons Deluxe game is released as I will certainly be purchasing that one as well, (after playing the short freeware version recommended by Phil last week.

The point of all the seemingly pointless twaddle I've just mentioned above is to try and show you that I'm a dedicated gamer, who enjoys paying for his pleasures, not getting them for free; though there are some i do enjoy for free ;)

No I do not support Warez, but I do support sites that give away games for free as I get just as much pleasure from playing a free game as I do from those I frequently purchase

By the way, keep up the great reviews you've been writing recently. I think it's great to get someone writing a review such as your's as they add to my own which often don't detail the stuff you choose to write about. :)

I must agree with Stephen aka Whiterabbit UK on the topic of Gamestop. I did some searching and uncovered that this is a hugely popular website with similar traffic to Real Arcade and Bigfish. This is a legitimate company where Advertising and the Forex Trade Program fund the download of these games.

An intelligent guess would be that companies have tried to find other ways to monetise casual game downloads as only approximately 1% are converted to sales. Look at how successful MostFun games have been in offering full free version games with Advertising. I am aware that the names have been changed from several developers (ie Divo Games and AWEM) but it is illogical that they would not have been supported by the developers as their logo is clearly displayed during the load of the game. I reckon that some of the game names have been changed so that it doesn't cannibalise their exisisting sale of these games. They would have been sued otherwise.

Again a massive thanks to Whiterabbit for his altruistic behaviour and the fact that he writes like a gentleman and for sharing these gems with us. What a class act.

To Whiterabbit, and anyone else interested, the OSGGFG (Open Source Gamers Guide to Free Games) 3rd edition has recently come out, but I thought you might like these. The website link is http://mrcopilot.com/search/label/OSGGFG . Edition 3 is platform type games, both single and like multiplayer "deathmatch" ones, (Secret MAryo Chronicles is one of my favorites), edition 2 is RTS (Which are not my cup of tea, but they look like great games if you like that genre), and Edition 1 is FPS, some of which are based off the original Quake, Quake2, and Quake 3 arena engines. Personally, I love single-player mission based FPS, not the multiplayer, but these are excellent in my opinion (and can't beat the price!) Simply click on read more for the links on each section. Also, two of my favorite open-source FPS games I've played are called Cube, and Cube 2 (also known as Sauerbraten). Without putting too many links on here, you can view a sample of Sauerbraten at http://youtube.com/watch?v=1WPLKFI_ilE (one of many, but it gives you an idea of the gameplay, and of course, Whiterabbit, I know you LOVE to make your own levels :-)) Both games can be downloaded from the links here: http://www.cubeengine.com/files.php4Also, one more thing, Whiterabbit, and anyone else, I thought you might get some good info from this list of free FPS games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free_first-person_shooters

Anyways, I couldn't find FreeWareFan's games for the past 2 days, so everyone keep up the good work.

    Thanks, Mapsking

Thanks for all the links mapsking, they are appreciated.

I haven't seen FwF for two days either. The last game he posted was Tempo, which until about an hour ago I hadn't been able to get to work. Check out number 8 as I've posted the controls you need to know. Expect a review sometime this week. :)

    Have a great week.

ps singleplayer fps games are my favorites as well

I got an email from FwF a little bit ago. He's busy on another project but I'm sure he'll be checking here before long.
