this is a quote from goodgotd who usually sorts things out

usually it's because you're using the xp/vista 'view archive as folder' idioticware or the 'install' mode option of any of several GUI archive utilities.

the first isn't well thought out and behaves that way, and the latter are set up to just unzip to a temp directory and run the main setup file, then remove the temp directory as soon as it quits- missing the activation step often needed.

You need to unzip the entire contents of the downloaded archive to a subdirectory, read the readme.txt there, and run the 'activate.exe' also there before the setup.exe if so stated, though if there is an activate, exe, do it regardless- it writes the needed data into the registry.

xp/vista you also need to right-click and use 'run as > administrator' to get the required permission level to get that data written.

I've not used xp for a while and forget things easily, oldtimers disease setting in but I'm one of the lucky ones, never have probs with GOTD. somebody loves me. lol

Sorry, looks like we crossed. I tried uninstalling it. I've tried restarting. I've tried activation as 'run as', and there is no option for admin, just my user, I'm the admin...
Oh well! : /

ok, if you unzip the file and run activate as admin then run setup as admin it should work, but you know this already so after running setup try activate again. everyday people seem to have these probs and there's no definitive answer. another way is to download the s/ware again on your pc (make sure you've uninstalled the first d/l)

Thanks mikerb, (no sarcasm) I'm a tired lady with a migraine off to bed. I guess I don't get this GOTD - - - but I'm bummed! After reading all the 'stuff' in:
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/92
I'm surprised that there's not a clear solution for this problem. It's not my ISP, I dont have two security programs running... Nothing noted seemed to actually SOLVE this issue. Doesn't GOTD care that this happens, or that some people like me aren't pc-smart enough to figure it out? Is there someone that knows the real reason why? I really appreciate GOTD and there's no slamming going on here, I just see a repetative issue...

just food for thought. Have a great evening.

I also read everything under:
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/92

and was hoping there were some more ...defined explanations/help than what was discussed in that forum.

I have added the program to the exceptions list under my windows firewall, still no action. arg!

I've installed today's program, and I understand how to do it (I just installed it on my husbands comp. with no issues) but on my comp it wont let me activate it. When I click on the icon and it connects, I keep getting the message that software activation is not possible, please try later or check firewall settings.
I have all my firewall stuff turned OFF completely, and I've checked everything my non-IT brain knows of. Can someone please help me before this offer ends?

Thanks!
