Thanks, Mr. B., for filling in for me last night. I don't like posting something that sounds like FUD and then leave but I had no choice. As I was searching for the Wilder's Security thread, our power went "Poof". It can be so much fun living near Lake Erie as the storms come in fast and furious at times, especially during the winter. And then, sometimes even, the storms from Lake Ontario decide to pay us a visit. We live about 10 mins from Buffalo, NY and I am sure some of you have seen some of the storms we have gotten in the past years on the news.

this is favorite antivirus and i am published it for others

Just wanted to say thank you to everybody for all the info.
Especially Mr.B for the analysis, the Ambassador for the links, K8 for starting it.
Since 2006 we've been switching all PCs & Laptops to Kaspersky. Of course(!) we knew nothing about the problems and potential conflicts.

Since this thread started we've been reading and following the links, now all nicely tucked into my BM.

Peace, Manu

One day passed and still no email from that site.
Maybe the free license was a limited offer and is already over by now. :-(

Very strange... didn´t work with my usual email-address.
But worked with a free trash mail service. Oo
Email came within a few seconds. :)

Better be fast. I think this offer actually is limited and will end tomorrow.

As I said, I was not really searching for all this..I was looking for ratings and found this. I do NOW vaguely remember the thread on BBR but since I didn't use Kaspersky I just glanced over it. I lurk there; hardly post, since I know nothing.

Windows Live OneCare isn't even a contender. Not even on the radar. It hasn't been around long enough - it is yet to pass a VB100 test on Vista - Been tested three times on XP, Vista then XP (months apart) and failed on Vista. With only three results it doesn't have enough of a track record in my opinion.

Also it tries to do a lot more than just antivirus and antimalware. Most of the components are not as complete or battle hardened as the dedicated products that provide a single aspect of support or protection.

Perhaps in 12 months time - might be a different story - but OneCare is still fairly green right now.

Kaspersky is good (not real speedy) - except for those pesky objectID's and ISwift stuff - and after trying to get it off my machine (including using KAV's own utilities that did the job piecemeal fashion - I said never again.

Obviously someone as Kaspersky's got the hint that people don't want data hidden in Alternate Data Streams (the same technique rootkits use to hide from virus scanners etc, Kaspersky was hiding their data from virus and user tampering).

The current version apparently lets you opt out of "ISwift" but most users have no clue what it is, and probably won't discover until they try to remove it all.

What Kaspersky does, I don't believe is dangerous or harmful (it isn't) but I want to see what data is on my pc in plain view - I don't like anybody else hiding stuff from me, or deciding on my behalf that "I don't need to know".

--------------

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2354?replies=17#post-14867

Is the thread graylox was thinking of (if my powers or mind reading are as good as other people tell me).

As I said in the above link - the best (free) option is Avast (hands down).

I've had "discussions" in the past with support people from AVG I had a user send me a file she thought was OK - but AVG told her it had a trojan and mentioned something about banking. She panicked and sent me the file (who needs enemies, huh?) anyway I was ok for me - and it turned out to be a keygen for a commercial program (the filename said it was something entirely different). I pulled the file apart and watched it run and it was fine - no file or registry access, nothing left resident after it had ran. I wasn't a trojan & I was 100% sure of that. I forwarded it onto AVG and they told me it had a trojan, and I should not run it again and do a full scan of my hard disk because I was probably infected. I called their bluff and explained the detailed testing I had done, and they replied that "I shouldn't be running 'those' programs. We (AVG) are not going to mark it as a false positive, as our engineers have determined it to be an 'inappropriate' or 'dangerous' program".

So AVG is not only trying to detect viruses, but they are your moral guardian also - deciding what software you can and cannot run, and if you are naughty they will tell you it has a virus to "scare you off".

Now for a company to lie about a Trojan or Virus detection when that is the business they are in - is inexcusable - but it seems this is their policy. Use something else, that at least will be honest with what it "detects" and not also report on some ficticious "naughty, but harmless" list. (Maybe if they had an option to turn the BS filter off, it might be different).

I use NOD32, which isn't free, but depending on which testing results you refer to is either the best or the second best commercial AntiVirus for windows, available. (I value - High Detection rates (No BS), No False Positives, and Fast, Fast, Fast). Results: NOD32 vs. Competition

But as I have said numerous times before, don't become complacent about trusting AVG (paid or free) - there are other free alternative that are so much better.

Kaspersky is OK, but it can have high memory requirements (not sure about the current release, but previous versions certainly did), and it is definitely one of the slower products for on-demand scanning.

Hi, all together, I'm very sorry, Kaspersky is only on the magazine CD. But if it is in China and Germany free, why not in GB or USA ? Have a look at all the magazines.
Here you get an all around package : virus, spam and firewall for one year. But you have to get a new key every 3 month. After the 4. renewal the circle starts from the
beginning: new key and 3 times renewal ...
but about every year you can install a newer version, if there is one. No Kaspersky tech support, but support from the magazine. I have some of those CDs and DVDs but how to get them to you ?
Sorry pauloparra no everlasting love this time.:(

Mario, no big deal. Back in 95, I never could wrap my head around "L8R"=L eight r=Later or my all time fav which usually I resemble...PEBKAC=Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair :) And I agree about the people out there. But I think you have to take some with a grain of salt, others because they just can not express their thoughts properly and some ones who need the help of emoticons to explain what they are saying. Then you got the ones who are just down and out plain rude.

BTW thanks Kate. But since you should only use ONE AV and I am using AVG Pro(thanks to you if I am not mistaken), I am gonna pass on the KAV.

My apologies to k8UndeadFox for my gender mistake. Delenn13 thank you for the hint, but I am not proficient enough on l33t speak and have a hard time spotting it. I typed without thinking, I'll be more careful from now on, I'm really sorry.

graylox, this is what you did. You showed your concern about our safety on your first post. On your second post you stated that you may be able and willing to help. Most people should know that what counts is the effort, not the result. BTW how is that further research going? I am just kidding. Don't waste too much time on this.

Funkymom, I agree with you about the existence of people that are very helpful, patient and willing to help. I also agree that there are snotty people out there too, but I don't think that there are just a few of them. In fact I believe that the majority of people one comes across the Web is not the helpful, patient type.

You were right on the spot about yesterday being a crazy day. The bus stops were full of people and somebody told me she had to wait almost two hours for a bus that usually runs every 30 mins. The answers to your questions are no and no because I live alone, I don't have a cellar and my apt complex is waaayy far from Downtown :)

I just stayed home all day by myself and turned the music up because I didn't want to hear all the screaming and yelling from the Super Bowl fans around me that were watching it on TV (their barbecues smelled good though).

k8UndeadFox, thank you for your additional information. I'll try again using it with a disposable email and will let you know how it goes.

First of all you don't get the software from that site only the key and I provided a link for you to download the Kaspersky software from the Kaspersky site so there can't be any danger in that can there?

Secondly use a disposable email address as I did (thought everyone should know to do this anyway) :P

Thirdly at first I too got an error page when I clicked on the re-direct link so I left it 24 hours or so, used a different email address and bingo it worked. I received my key and now have a fully working Kaspersky Anti-Virus v7.

Oh dear looks like I should have taken screen shots for all of you :P and held you all by the hand. LOL

K8

P.S. pauloparra I'm female not male :D

here i go sticking my nose in......

pauloparra-By the way, thanks for your concern about our security and your offer to help. I wish there were more people like you in this site.

there are lots of amazingly, helpful people on this site. not just helpful, but extremely patient and knowledgeable. unfortunately there are a few snotty immature folk too, but that's to be expected.

being as nosy as i am, i checked out your profile, and i see that you are in phoenix. today must have been a crazy day in your neck of the woods. did you lock yourself and your family in the cellar with plenty of water and food? or did you rent out your front lawn for parking?

i'm currently living in tucson, myself and it was a ghost town this afternoon/evening.

Now I am worried about the fact that the Chinese Kaspersky forums have my main email address. It is my fault because I was dumb enough to give it to them. oh well, live and learn.

I won't even discuss my attempts to delete the account I opened in China. I can't even log in back into the account I created! Maybe k8UndeadFox will get back to this thread and clarify his steps a bit.

I'll wait for a few days and if the Chinese page starts giving me problems I'll deal with it then. I think the language in the pages is Cantonese and I know people who might be able to help me.

Graylox, if you can provide easy to follow steps to obtain a free Karspesky AV 7.0 license key I will love you forever.

By the way, thanks for your concern about our security and your offer to help. I wish there were more people like you in this site.
