Good concept but not worth the price tag. Downloaded from here and installed . VERY limited on folder icons and basically all it gives you are colored folders , for the rest of the goodies it nags you to buy their paid version . Uninstalled pretty much within 5 minutes of installing .

Tried it and voted Thumbs Up.

Works good and does what is supposed to do. You can add your own icons, I am not sure it if takes PNG though, I think I only saw .ico as the option, but I didn't try adding any PNG. It's simple and and the cascaded context menu for each folder is a nice quick-operation touch to guarantee you can use it when you want to.

Nice! Installed perfectly on Vista Home Premium. This is going to be a very useful program - I had never thought of color-coding folders before for ease of identification. I often work on projects with many folders and sub-folders, so being able to tell at a glance what belongs to what is really handy.

My advice: If you've never used one of these before, disregard the criticisms of this version and give it a try. I think you'll be pleased - even if it is just for the concept of how it works.

Great program. Works fine on Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Yes, it's true you can change folder icons by going to the Properties dialog - but it is so nice to have the context menu provided by Folder Marker and to have all those icons grouped together in tabs. Thumbs way up for this program! Thanks GAOTD & ArcticLine.

Good, though not perfect. You can't see the files inside the folders in windows vista, it looks like the folder is empty until you open it.

Installs and does what it should.
I use application specific icons built into application files.
The program keeps track of those, making for quick application specific folder tagging.

I like to try out ALL the software i can find, it's fun for me.

However, this application gave my machine a fatal error right from go. Now if i had a full machine, and it was clogged with crap ... i might understand ... this was from a fresh image of XP. Sadness .. but then again, maybe not. I didn't have to look long for this alternative. It also costs, but comes with a free trial not nearly as restrictive as this unnamed [expletive deleted] here.... long live 'Lovely Folders' !!

Question: If I make a design or pic for a jump drive folder, where would the info for that design be stored?...Within the folder I made the design for (embedded or otherwise), or somewhere on the drive of the computer used in making the design?

To put it another way: If I take that jump drive (containing the folder I made a design for) and plug it into another computer, would the said folder still have the same design?...Even if the Jump Drive's drive letter is different for that other computer?

I've been a random viewer and user of software offered on GAOTD for quite some time. I am disappointed that anyone was exposed to inappropriate content. It diminishes the professional appearance of the company and their product in addition to the reputation of GAOTD. For those wishing to purchase or sell such materials, I'm sure they are familiar with search engines and tags.

Thank you GAOTD for the work you do and to other contributors who suggested various alternatives to this product. And no I don't think this comment is only for the developer's ears. The topic is bigger than the product and needs to be discussed.

I got this last time it was on this site, totally worth it. It's a lot like the feature on Mac OSX that lets you color folders and files. I use a Mac at work but prefer to use a PC when I come home so I was really happy to get this into Windows. Works perfectly with Vista to.

If you haven't used a Mac before, just trust me and give this a shot.. you'll never want to go without it again.

#59 ArticLine,

With regards to your screenshot, noticed that you have "Givevayoftheday" instead of the usual "Givewayoftheday". While it is possibly a typo or not, and whether it will confuse GAOTD users during the registration,

I have no idea as I did not download this software as I already have the Pro version installed and enjoying it very much. Thanks.

With regards to today's GAOTD,

Can anyone here try JetScreenshot, capture anything you like and share it on the web please. After that, get the url link created and share the link here?

It can be anything that you capture, but share it on the web rather than ftp to your own server.

Thanks.

Did a capture using JetScreenshot.

1. Unable to share to web.

Error Message:

>>Resolving hostname my.jetscreenshot.com...
>>Connecting to 67.222.16.123...
Connect timed out.
>>Disconnecting...
<<Disconnected.

2. During capture, the crosshairs should do away with the small little rectangle box on the bottom right, as it is confusing form the visual point of view.

3. After inserting object, the icon to move the object around should be more responsive. Presently, it is very difficult to pinpoint where the area of the "move object" icon is, as the area of sensitivity of this feature is very narrow.

Thanks for a great product. It is very similar to Xing of SnagIT.

Hello GOTD Universe!

For me the issue of the BOOBS is much more subtle. Pornography is a powerfully addictive medium that degrades and demeans (and in the end, destroys) the incredible, wonderful, eternal sexual connection that can enrich the relationship between a husband and wife. As such, it is a pernicious and destructive influence on both individuals and society.

Creating and providing a cute icon for a folder containing pornographic material gives the impression that this medium is merely harmless at best and charming at worst. Similar to the deviously deceptive Camel cigarette advertisements aimed at children, the cute little BOOB icon is the dainty sheepskin hiding the vicious snake that will devour your dearest treasures once you welcome it into your bosom.

I know this icon isn't included in today's software, but I pass.

Merci, GOTD.

I like the premise. However I have Vista Ultimate and it is inconsistant in applying the changes to the destination folder. For this reason I give the program a thumbs down. Better Code needs to be executed do this properly. Same result on Windows 7, but they don't offer support for that one.

I will pass on this offer. Not because it is a bad program, but because I have the previous pro version offered here before. That being said if you don't have this I would encourage you to get this while you can. This vendor has been here before and has offered some quality programs. Their support is also very good. BTW I would suggest you look for Bee Icon from this vendor. It's a very nice program.

There goes GOTD again....they're deleting legitimate comments concerning the fully nude rack pictured for the demo, but they're allowing posts such as #25, which has name calling and gay bashing remarks. Go figure.
To complain about the stupid bare breasts is not "prudish" - it's called maturity and decency. This is not an R-rated site...until now.
No mature adult would have any use at all for that icon. But why am I writing this? It's going to be censored anyway. (But the double-D's will remain, rest assured.)

#43: "Those of YOU worrying about the “boobs” icon should relax! You only get it when you BUY it! "

Now if that isn't a familiar phrase... ;-)

* * *

#54: "Sensorship is illegal, yet was instituted in America at the urging or religious groups (church). Our goverment went against our own law, the Separation of Chuch and State ."

Isn't it a bit of a stretch to use a humorous icon as an excuse to bash religion? AFAIK nobody's preventing you from looking at boobs, or even moobs as much as you want -- most objections to that sort of thing are based on 1) parents who want to be able to control what their kids are exposed to, & 2) people who feel that sort of thing is exploiting women.

#24: " I checked out the second item they asked everyone to review ... It works pretty well but I found parts of the licensing agreement rather odd ... (What kind of “cracks” are illegal? And who uses stuff like this to control . . . you have to read it, it will probably make you laugh.)"

Cracks are methods of bypassing software DRM, usually by altering the original code. A crack might include a file(or files) that replace originals, or be a small program that patches existing files. You might also see Key Generators in the same category. FWIW Bill Gates allegedly said if it wasn't for cracked copies, Windows would have a much harder time competing with the free Linux.

The other stuff looks like a somewhat poorly worded version of actually somewhat common licensing terms, or at least it was a few years back. It's the same sort of thing as warnings not to check fuel level using a match (instead of a flashlight), don't try to dry your hair in the microwave, & the label that a 1500 watt heat gun is not to be used as a hair drier. And sadly yes, people do, do that sort of stuff... there are sites devoted to that sort of folly.

#31: "There is nothing phornographic about an artist representation of a pair of breast. Geez."

That may well be true, but you're insulting anyone who has ever picked up a crayon to call a floating pair artistic. ;-)

"The fact is, one of the first things most of us ever saw or touched was a breast."

And obviously some of us have never gotten over it. :-)

* * *

#46: "one of those things that should be built into windows."

Isn't it? I'm grabbing this for my wife to play with -- I'm not into icons, & can't remember off the top of my head whether XP offers it or not, but in 7 you just right click the folder & go to the customize tab, same in Vista I'm pretty sure.

* * *

#53: "Would an image backup help to restore the GAOTD software? I am testing another alternative – not a foolproof though. I have installed a virtual machine"

An image backup, like you get using a prior GTOD from Paragon, puts things back *Exactly* like they were when you did the backup. Regarding backups, virtual machines package an OS install, complete with software, in a single file. Rather than take an exact copy of everything on a disc and re-write the entire drive, you just use a saved copy of that one file. Not sure what benefits, regarding backups at least, the Ceedo product would give you. There are free versions of that sort of thing you can try, or if you just want to run software from a USB stick go to portableapps.com.

Would like to thank ArticLine for providing a breast icon for nursing mothers. It is unfortunate that the breast has been confused with its look alike the boob. This confusion has obviously affected the mind of #58 (lol) and is a systemic problem in our society. We need to honor those women who bravely use their breasts for their primary function- breast feeding.

To those who've lost Folder Marker Pro due to it being overwritten by today's version; alls not lost because you can move some files from a demo of the pro version over to the home version and you get some (but not all) of the icons back that don't usually come with the home edition.

I can't say for certain which files you need to copy over as it's been quite some time since I did it and no longer have the program as I upgraded my hard drive and never bothered to copy the program over to my new disc..

Trial and error should sort it out (which is how I did it the first time). What I do remember is that it wasn't hard to accomplish.

I hope this helps (a little)

I originally picked up this utility when GOTD offered it last year. After using it for a month I ended up buying the pro version, and there’s no better endorsement of a product than that.

To #19 Robert - Valuable service? Would ashraf and captain kirk like to explain why they can’t just finish their comments here? If you rely on those comments so much then why don’t you just bookmark their sites and go visit them every day. How can you refer to a comment as a “valuable service” when someone has to surf out of this site to finish reading it? Can you imagine if every GOTD visitor did that? Resorting to use someone else’s web site, in this case GOTD, with some cliffhanger ending serves no one but themselves, and I totally agree with #16 anewbe – Right On!

My thing is I tried to registar the program and can't seem to find where you get the key from to do so - or is it registared automatically.
I did try to use the contact us for in order to ask about it and the form (no matter what I try) does not seem to want to accept my email address and therefor will not send the email - interesting.
Anyone know how to make sure it is registared?

#33, Celrt42, using its built-in folder customization features, Vista allows you to directly use the following folder picture types: JPG, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIF, TIFF, BMP, ICO, WMF, DIB, JFIF, JPE, FPX, and MIX. Additionally, you can use icons from the following file types: ICO, ICL, EXE, and DLL. Vista users need to be aware that using pictures or icons will prevent the 3D folder contents view. During my testing, I noticed that it was sometimes necessary to change the folder contents in order to refresh the folder 3D image, at least when using folder pictures. The picture will appear as folder contents. The icon completely replaces the folder icon. Personally, I prefer to use text search, and I like the standard 3D folder contents view.
