Sorry, but the interface alone on this product makes it useless.

I click on burn - because I intend to burn data to a DVD - and it actually starts burning nothing on to the DVD and ruins the DVD. So I click on Load - assuming that is to create a DVD to burn and NOTHING happens. Then I figure out - Oh, stupid me, I must first click on the "+" at the right to add files. So I figure "-" must be to remove files, so what does "x" do? - it removes all the work you did.

This is just too ridiculous.

I can find a link as fast as you can copy and paste a link to your post.

It is better to shut up and look stupid, than to speak and prove you are.

Pat- If you have Vista, you probably already have a program for recording on your computer. Search your programs for "Easy Audio Capture", and you can record whatever, then burn it to cds.

@ #32 I think you mean you need a recording program. Something like Audacity. You can record your voice and save the files in a CD compatible format. Lots of good free software exists to but´rn this to a disc...such as Burrrn or ImgBurn. Just google these.
I don´t for the life of me understand why anyone would need today´s offering...free or not!

Using Nero and happy with it (not cheap but good, can also do Bluray if you have one), so I'll pass today.
There are many freeware burning programs out there. I don't think anyone would need a commercial software which is only capable of burning when you can get freewares which can do more than just burn discs.

I don't know if I was doing better with the software here before I started reading the comments or now. I know that I haven't downloaded anything since I started reading the comments though, so that must say it. I don't know much about the inner workings of software and programs and currently have no computer person to help me, so when my computer "burps", I am kind of stuck till I can figure it out - I like the free programs that I was getting but now that I read these comments first, I am kind of scared to download them, since I can't fix the problems they may cause and don't understand some of the things that are discussed.

I think that the developer of Extra CD/DVD burner simply overlooked including links to support pages, etc for this program on their website. The tutorial is here http://www.dvdcopyrip.com/extra-cd-dvd-burner-guide.html

I will say that although I'm not yet sure how useful this will be since I have other burning progs and don't need to burn anything right now, Extra has had a number of other Giveaways featured in the past that have been useful programs, and they deserve some appreciation for being a repeat contributor.

As rightly said by ASHRAF (N #3) this SW is quite poor because it lacks some crucial features such as creating a disc image and saving it onto your computer.

# 37 free dvdfab makes the movie into a form that other programs like dvdshrink cannot recognize or burn onto a disk since the free dvdfab doesn't burn, it just copies it to your hardrive in another format.

The link does not work because it is misspelled. If you go to the directory where the program is installed, you'll find the link named ExtraDVDBrun rather than ExtraDVDBurn.

Another indication what a sloppy program this is.

I did not download the GOTD, therefore I cannot make a comment on it.
I rely on the comments of those who actually installed it and tried it.

I have been using CDBURNER XP for so many years I cannot even think of using anything else. The latest version is its best. It is free.

Available here http://cdburnerxp.se/

IMO CDburner XP is great for newbees and experienced alike. Until the last version it did not have disk copy. (which wasnt hard to do anyway even without that option) Ver.4 has that option. I did have to wait until Ver 4 (Vista compatible) was made and had to use Nero in the meantime.I was very happy with the new version of CDburner XP.

I paid for the retail version and upgraded Nero last year and only used it until the new CDBXP came out.

It was better than I expected, yet what I expected, was not very good; and thus, I was very, very surprised. StarBurn, was much better than this.

Over all, take one of the links that Ashraf gave, or something. Any thing is better than Extra CD/DVD Burner, and if it's free, than you can bet much better.

If GOTD gave away, AnyDVD, CloneCD, Roxio, Sonic DVDit!, or some other high class software, I would be much happier.
If you have nothing better to download, than download this
It's good for dial-up users, 1.1mb, it has enough for the new user, and it's free.

You can burn, erase, and more, yet this has all and less than something like: http://cdburnerxp.se/
CD Burner XP.

All and all,
3/10,

Yours truly,

I have no use for this, but will pass it on to less computer savvy friends who use XP and need an easy to use, idiot proof DVD data burning tool.

Just a comment about the comments: GOTD doesn't exist just to give us all free programs. GOTD is a great marketing tool for lesser known companies to get some recognition. If you are impressed in any way with their giveaway, then you may check out their other more expensive and more useful programs. It's that simple. GOTD is the conduit, we benefit, the companies benefit, there is nothing to complain about. Tomorrow something you find useful may be offered, or not. That's why we come back each day, isn't it?

I was hoping that this product would come with an API (application program interface), but no.

It was amusing to read on the publisher's web site:

"Give you the most sincere advice:
Why not to Spend the least money on the most satisfying thing. As long as $19.98 you will be able to achieve the the target "Easy backup your data in the CD/DVD". Join Extra's new experience as soon as possible ,you will enjoy the world which is full of endless amusement."

I'll stick with my current crop of CD/DVD burning programs.

Thanks for an interesting start to each day.

I've used the BurnAware Free without any issues for about a year now. Their home page explains it better than me! http://www.burnaware.com/
You may want to upgrade to the paid version for a few more features?

It is ideal for users with basic disc burning needs as backup, creating data, audio, MP3 music, DVD-Video discs and burning disc images. Free, easy to set up, it enables you to save your files to disc quickly and provides clean, flexible interface to help you complete your burning tasks faster.

What I am trying to achieve is to record an voice audio on CD rather than on an audio cassette tape. I have Windows VISTA home Premium.

Will this program offer me that option, or do I already have that option on my PC and if so, can anyone tell me how to accomplish this?

I want to create Children's Books on tape or CD for my grandchild for Christmas with Grandma's voice.

Again FWIW...
There are several possible formats for CDs & DVDs, just like your PC's hard drives might be formatted to FAT 32 or NTFS for/with Windows. This is the difference between say just burning a DVD's VIDEO_TS folder to a disc using Windows built-in drag-drop-burn features, & burning a Video DVD in Nero &/or Roxio, using the correct format that a stand-alone DVD player looks for & will recognize.

Just like when you create an image file of a hard drive for backup, &/or to copy everything at one go to another hard drive, you can create an image of a CD, DVD, or BD disc. Instead of individual files, you've got an exact copy of all the chunks of data that go on a drive or disc, exactly as they will be on that drive or disc. In fact to read any portion of that data in a form we'd recognize, you either have to put the image on a disc, or pretend to with a disc emulator (a virtual disc). That's what a CD, DVD, or BD image is.

Burning software will often create an image as an option &/or as part of it's normal burning procedure. Since the software has to figure out where everything is going to go physically on the disc you're burning to create the *Table of Contents*, it's simply more efficient to do that part of the job once & only once, storing an image that only has to be created once, & then copied (burned to a disc) as many times as you like. Some people & some software work with these images -- some don't... if you don't, letting the software handle everything, it's no big deal.

Video DVDs are a special case, because both blank DVDs, & the DVD player connected to your TV are often made as cheaply as possible. There are LOTS of compatibility problems with burned discs that can't be read & players that won't read burned discs. Making things worse, not all burning software (maybe even most?) will create video DVDs exactly to spec [this is what ImgBurn is known for]. And not all DVD Authoring software (again most?) will create the video DVD files exactly right, so that every player will handle them. Finally, not every burner, not every drive will burn blank DVDs that every player can read perfectly.

For Dual Layer DVDs use ImgBurn. For media buy quality like (but not limited to) Verbatim. For burners check reviews before you buy. For authoring without menus use Muxman. For authoring with menus, get/use software that focuses on making DVDs -- NOT converting your content... most all of the do-everything easy DVD software makes too many compromises -- you could, but chances are wouldn't carve a turkey with a Swiss Army Knife.

Do check out authoring software so you can be comfortable using it, but please realize that adding more features means more learning... Software that promises to be easy, yet create fancy, feature rich DVDs, will not do so, & it won't do it with good compatibility.

Common Give Away, offers like this make me think your promoting crudware! I realize it can be a difficult task you do in obtaining daily offers but this is horrible.

I wouldn't install this on an enemies computer. no less any of my own or my families!

I'm not going to offer free alternatives that are better. I'm not in the mood. Besides, it's time folks learn how ro use Google search!

Someone stated we pay for software by providing feedback to developers. If this is completely true, where are the majority of them on the day their product is offered? very few show up, period. I say, we pay for software by repairing and or reformatting systems that are laid waste through or own stupidity & greed when we choose to install garbage just besause it's free for a day.

The perfect example of that is, folks installing "non Vista compatible programs on Vista", inviting disaster to strike yet again! Imagine that! I'm done risking either of my systems just for a free program.

I've just spent the last ten days reformatting both my XP & Vista Ultimate systems as well as my slave & external drives. Ten days because I have 30 + GB music & recreating my play lists is a horrendous task. I've started fresh & swear, "no more crudware".

Is this a real "giveaway" if the developer isn't trying to sell it? If you decide you like this software and want to suggest that a friend buy it, you can't. See Extra's purchase page to verify.

I can't even find this program on the developer's website: www.dvdcopyrip.com. Don't start with the link here on GAOTD -- try to find Extra CD/DVD Burner on their website without using Google.

In case you forget how we visitors to GAOTD "pay" for software, we provide feedback to the software developers. It's a barter system.

In this case, the most valuable feedback is that the program lacks features that most users consider essential and basic to any CD/DVD burning program.

There's nothing wrong at all for GAOTD visitors to tell the folks at Extra Software: "Thanks, but no thanks." If the developer hopes to make money by offering this for sale, she/they need to offer a product with more functionality or ease of use than builtin or free software.

And, I personally think that evaluations based on the concept, description, promotion and website are also valid. Extra's website is ... obviously in need of a native english speaking editor. No idea of where Extra is from, but the website is available in "Brazil", "German", "French", 2 flavors of "Spaish", and "Japanese" via the magic of Google Translate.

'Nuff said. Besides a thanks to the people at GAOTD for keeping on providing software for us to consider and use.

FWIW...
There are 3 main, dominant burning programs: the free ImgBurn, & those made by Roxio & Nero. ImgBurn can be a little bit less friendly, but it's focus is on results -- it's long been the best at burning dual layer video DVDs (perhaps the only reliable way to burn DL video DVDs). Roxio & Nero both are easy to use, & do just about anything else you could want, plus the stripped down OEM versions are normally available for ~$3 - $4 on-line. And both companies have reduced feature software, plus they typically have upgrade offers, reducing the price at times by more than 75% after MIR.

That said, there are plenty of freeware, shareware, & payware alternatives, each with their own limitations which may or may not bother you... Star Burn for example uses a part of Daemon Tools -- unfortunately part that can & has caused countless problems conflicting with other software. None that I'm aware of duplicate the feature set of the top 3, though you may not ever need those more advanced features. And most all of these alternatives generally work, so it becomes a matter of personal preference... You certainly have little or nothing to lose trying Extra CD DVD Burner to see if it works better for you than whatever you're currently using.

This is a bit of a disappointment as it is so far below what is available for free. I have used CDXP before but I use Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 FREE now. Just do a search for it as it is freely available. For 99.9% of us we do not need the very latest version of software as the older ones do everything we could want. When you have commercial software that is far better than this offering, as is just about every other freeware burning program, available for free then what is the point in even looking at this. Sorry GOTD but this is a massive duffer.

before lecturing people you might want to consider this

"You can store information on CD/DVD or create video and audio CD/DVD."
(extract from the blurb here on the site)

Creating video or audio CD's/DVD's implies that it can do all kinds of different data.

On their own website they state :
"It is developed to fulfill the requirement of all kinds of Data CD/DVD burning needs."

Most people would read that as to mean that it can do more then just write 'data' disc's.

Besides all that there's the fact that any halfway decent CD/DVD burner out there can do data-music CD's- video DVD's as well as .ISO files

Btw, the crooked English that they use on their site is far from reassuring about how professional they are.

" Join Extra's new experience as soon as possible ,you will enjoy the world which is full of endless amusement . " (extract from the site)

I guess the amusement starts with their writing. And before anyone calls me rude.... consider that the rudeness comes from them because they try to entice people into buying a product without having the common courtesy to use their target clientele's language in a proper manner.

#19 Well how come the following line is in the software description at the top of this page.

"...You can store information on CD/DVD or create video and audio CD/DVD...."

As for me, I'll pass on this one for today. Sorry, I just have no need. Thanks anyway GOTD!!!

Again people read and do not understand what they read. This program does what it says it does and is a good one. If you prevfer another then fine and good.

It isnot a movie and picture burner at all. Data only.

Maybe some don't read the products intro located on the products website, This is for DATA.....Here, take a read so you know what the product is:
If you are worried that not enough hard disk, but grudge to delete the beloved data, then simply burn it! Extra CD DVD Burner realized the CD or DVD burning. It is developed to fulfill the requirement of all kinds of Data CD/DVD burning needs. It includes all the features required by the developers in such software plus more, offering the reliability, stability and ease of use in extremely affordable price

Now if you read slowly and carefully you will see that no where does it state music, image, ISO, or such. So why grip about something that the product clearly states that it does not do????

I myself will pass on this product today as I have already plenty of various burners and backup systems already in-place....Thanks GAOTD and Extra Software Inc. for the offer.

#14:
A .ISO file is a "Disc Image".
Basically, it is a copy of what is on the disc.
When you burn it as a "disc image", the file is part of the disc.
When you burn it as a "data disc", that means the 1's and 0's of the file are being transferred to the disc.

Also, an ISO disc is Read only.

Extra CD/DVD is lacking feature-wise, and at least a dozen better freeware alternatives exist.

http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/gmm/fwcdburn_r.html

For download links to:

Ashampoo Burning Studio Free
CDBurnerXP
DeepBurner
ImgBurn
BurnCDCC
Windows Media Player
MP3 CD Doctor Lite
Easy Burning
BurnAware Free
ISO Recorder
Burrrn
... and more.

Software to write to a CD or a DVD is so common and freely available even the past market leaders like Nero have realised that trying to sell software that just writes to a disc really isn't the premium software it once was when recordable CD technology was still new (Burning discs is only one item in a very bloated checklist of features for Nero).

If you plan on selling CD burner software - it had better do something more useful than just write to a CD or a DVD, which clearly is being done better by many other existing products - which are given away as Freeware.

Even if the program was available as freeware - I'd not go near it.
Complete disappointment guaranteed :(

Details of yesterday’s, todays and tomorrows free games have been posted over in the forums. Monday’s games were a couple of excellent word games called Babble Deluxe and Crossword Writer, today’s game is called Volfied an excellent lines game with a difference and Wednesday’s game is a platform game called Gargoyle.

Babble Deluxe & Crossword Writer:

Volfied:

Gargoyle:

Today’s giveaway offering does seem a little lack luster, but if you are anything like I was several years ago, owning only a free version of Nero that came with the CD/DVD writer I bought, then it may be useful, as that version had some incompatibility issues with XP.

Today’s program has got a simple interface, and although not sporting many of the bells and whistles of its more illustrious cousins it is still a functional writer, that I’d find useful for writing data CD’s and DVD’s., plus it’s free for today. The Nero copy I used to used created loads of image CD’s that I can no longer open because all I get is cyclic redundancies. Though I’ve since moved on and have software that I’m really pleased with. The free version of Starburn has much more functionality that today’s offering, so if you miss it you could always try that one:

http://www.download.com/StarBurn/3000-2646_4-10761014.html

You can use the activation code with the downloadable demo from Extra’s home page, (see link above the comments) if you wish. The only thing I dislike about the program is that the register button remains on the tool bar even when it’s registered which is an unnecessary clutter, otherwise as said above the GUI is very simple. I’d say this program is ideal for those less software wily.

I do think the giveaway description for this software is misleading. Reading the information over on the home site this software was actually designed specifically for copying your DVD movies and audio CD’s, though it lacks blu-ray functionality which Starburn v10 does have.
.

Thanks for today’s offer but I think I’ll stick with Starburn. :)

#14, CheryIL5156,
You can think of a disc image as the data that would be on a disk put together into one file. Its like a virtual storage device.

That being said, today's giveaway only makes data CD/DVDs. So if you try to burn, for example, an .ISO disc image of The Dark Knight with this program, it will only place the .ISO file onto the CD/DVD rather then properly extracting the data stored in the .ISO file and putting The Dark Knight onto your CD/DVD.

Ashraf: My "nubi-ness" is showing; what do you mean when you talk about burning as a "proper disc image"? Thanks, in advance for your kind reply.

#8 said "absolutely useless third-party offering"

ermmmm
You guys want a new software everyday & except on rare GOTD system maintenance days you get one. There are lots of softwares that do similar things. Condemning the GAOTD offering when it does not suit you is just plain rude & not very encouraging to the provider of these daily goodies we all look forward to. I enjoy the reading your comments for the most part unless tinged with utter condemnation.

SOMEONE might have a good use for the daily offering even if you don't!
#9 said "I may install this on my wife’s laptop as a quick and easy burner for her to use."

As for me... I am happy with Nero.
Thanks anyway GAOTD... I look forward to tomorrow!

First off, who doesn't have CD/DVD burning software on their computer. The first annoyance is the fact the program positions itself in the upper right left corner of the screen. I prefer my taskbar on the top and had to drag it down to the bottom to move the program to the center of the screen.

It did not identify my DVD burner drive on startup, it detected my DVD-ROM drive. The progess meter did not display properly while it was burning...it was partially hidden.

Obviously the developer is from China and he needs to have a good translater (and another course in Visual Studio). Take a look at the website and see the mistakes.

There are so many freeware alternatives I'm not even going to take the time to rattle them off, I'm sure you're all aware of them

Total thumbs down here.

Installed and registered with no problems on WinXP SP3.
It's nothing fancy for a CD/DVD burner but if you don't want bells and whistles then this may be for you, especially as the install footprint is pretty small too (3.5Mb).

One glitch, is that a link in the Start Menu to their Homepage failed to find the shortcut.

I haven't had a chance to test the s/ware yet as I don't need to burn anything at the moment, and to be honestI'll stick with Nero (yes, I do need those bells and whistles :D) but I may install this on my wife's laptop as a quick and easy burner for her to use.
