Originally I also had problems with the install it went through the install process and then crashed I later found some unwanted "bonus programs" were on my system and working on their own so to speak but the software I wanted to install was not working at all.

Not being to keen on going the form method as mentioned by others because of the lack of clear instructions as to what it was for and IMHO it seemed like another way to gather personal data that has no relevance to using the software but did seem like it could be sold for marketing annoyances from others and I get enough of that.

After about 1 hour and several failed install attempts I noticed it was 10 min after midnight and so when I attempted to install again hoping for success I found the installer did not allow because the offer had expired as it was now the next day. This kind of made me mad and it was obvious nothing was going to get resolved on Christmas day so I went to their website and sent the customer service dept a short note explaining the situation.

Today when I was reading my email I found a very nice response from someone at 1STEIN and in the email was the needed reg key. Now like others had mentioned it seemed like a different size file from the on on the website to DL and purchase well in the email this software was referenced as: "*CodedColor PhotoStudio 6 Pro (special gold offer)
* Valid until: 6.1" I have a feeling there are some differences between this "special gold offer" version and the current retail download. And considering the key specifically mentioned that it was "Valid until: 6.1" and the current version is now 6.1.2.24 which appeared to be past the 6.1 that it spoke of I now had concerns about the key working at all with the current version that I had to install because the GOTD version prevented me from reinstalling after midnight 12/25 .

Well I gave it a go with the latest version with the key that was sent and It appears to work just fine for me on Win 7 64bit. So I was very pleased however because of the software's desire to constantly upgrade on its own as they claim it would and if it did the end result would be a higher version and the provided was only valid "Valid until: 6.1" and that was well past so it seems that one upgrade and your no longer valid. I disabled all upgrades being the key worked with the current version I was not going to take any other chances.

All in all the customer service was very good and quite prompt. The software is a bit cluttered and unorganized to the non photo editor in me and the German instructions were not much help to us non Germans but I just DL what I believe is the English guide so its going to be a read to figure out how all this works because it looks like it does a lot.

Not a complaint but an observation why is it that so many software vendors can develop powerful photo editing software with high powered features but the web page that they use to sell it is not that impressive graphically or poorly laid out and when you consider that's their area of expertise its going to be difficult for me to believe your claims let alone get $49.00 plus dollars out of me. It's not going to happen not in this day and age.

If the site is impressive it plants the seed in my head as a potential buyer that the software must be too. But IMHO and from a business perspective, if I don't know who you are being your not a name brand power player like Adobe Microsoft Nero etc. All I have to go by is how you present yourself and your product on your site if you fail to deliver and when your field is "graphics" I doubt I would even give you a chance in the first place. Invest in your company image get a professional web designer the cost will be justified by the increase in sales. It's a fact that in the e-commerce world image is everything and if your not trying I'm not buying. This is just my opinion.

Thank you again GOTD and everyone at 1STEIN.
Happy New Year to all!!

A NOTE FROM 1STEIN
DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING SUCCESS OF THIS PROMOTION, WE'VE DECIDED TO KEEP THE REGISTRATION OPEN UNTIL TONIGHT 27.12.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions. For those of you, who did not get a code, here's a last minute collection of all possible remedies we could think of. Our server has been up & running for 3 consecutive days without any downtime, and is still receiving registrations. So check the following:

1. The license eMail is sent immediately. Check your spam filter.

2. Maybe your mail provider is blocking it. Try with a different email adress.

3. Make sure your firewall allows CodedColor to access the internet. Turn off any firewall to be sure! If CodedColor says "no connection", then it might be right.

LAST NOT LEAST, THE MOST FREQUENT MISTAKE:
4. In the registration dialog you must hit "Register Now", not "Ok"!!

PS: WE'VE DECIDED TO KEEP THE REGISTRATION OPEN UNTIL TONIGHT 27.12.

Note that if you download the complete English Help File as directed in the comment from the 1stein staff with link listed above:
1. You have to take it out of the folder it is in, then move it up one folder level to replace 'old' .chm file.
2. After I got it into the correct folder, nothing was showing up on the right-hand pane. I right-clicked on the .chm file and chose 'properties'. The properties page stated, "this file looks like it came from another computer and might have some features blocked". I merely clicked the 'unblock' button and now I have English on the left AND on the right. Thank you 1stein!

I guess I am going to uninstall this software. I saw the program and seems really cool, but since I never got the keycode yesterday I suppose I am going to get stuck with the trial version. GIAK!
On my attempt I found other free software, so bua bua buawawawa... I was sad, I thought I was going to be able to get it. Oh well, I guess better luck next time...Thanks GOTD anyways, it´s the intention that counts... Happy holidays

I registered codedcolor PhotoStudio Pro 6.1 on the morning of the 25th. I never recievied the code for it, now stuck with trial version. The samw thing happened when I registered Boxoft Photo Framer a couple weeks ago. Is this Giveaway of the day some sort of scam, where they get you to try software and then buy it if you wish? Anyone else have this problem?

@111, ...
I'm one of the developers who work for CodedColor. We do care about the "List index out of bounds" exception. Unfortunately this error message is very generic and could happen anywhere in the program. So it is impossible to tell from the error message what is going wrong. Please be sure to use the report problem function from the help menu inside CodedColor (if you get that far). If that doesn't work, we still have other options for tracking this down. But you'll have to contact us directly.
Please understand that our dev team is not in the office during Christmas (as a matter of fact, I'm writing this from my home PC). So support will be limited during these days.

Installed CodedColor PhotoStudio Pro 6.1 on XPSP3. I requested a registration key several times, was told a key was sent several times, but never received it. I did press the "Register Now" button, and checked my email spelling, and checked my spam bucket.

No one addressed our out of bounds error and we can't use the software.

This seemed like a big waste of time.... even though it looked promising.

Last minute installation, so I haven't had a chance to test this program properly but it looks full-featured and very promising. High quality user interface, and impressive tutorials. It's actually the bundled freeware tool Pixpedia Publisher for which I have the most pressing and immediate need, but I'm sure the main programme will be useful later. Thanks, 1Stein Corp and GOTD.

By the way 1Stein Corp, when installing the additional tools, you should either use the path which has been specified by the user for ColorCoder PhotoStudio, or you should ask the user again. It's never ideal to simply default to C:\Program Files.

I put this program through its paces on a photo that was in my "Deletable" folder, just to see what it could do.

First I pressed the 'One-Button Fix" several times until it was "too far", then pressed "Undo" twice; the results were impressive. Next, I applied all of the "Recommended" settings in the various imaging features; again, impressed.

When I was done, I used CodedColor's collage feature to create a "before" and "after" enhancement image -- with text, of course.

I am not easily impressed, having been in the image processing business since the early 80's; but the results were quite good, considering it only took 15-20 minutes to get quality results.

While there is an option to add user filters, they are only in 'FLT' format (sorry, no '8BF').

While Irfanview will continue to be my imaging program of choice for everyday stuff, CodedColor PhotoStudio Pro 6.1 is definitely a "keeper", IMO.

No problems with install, etc., but you *do* have to pay attention to what you are doing.

I am indeed far more impressed with this program as I have been able to spend more time "getting under the hood." And hearing from the support folks at 1Stein that Photoshop plugin compatibility is coming in the future makes it a no-brainer for me to hold on to this one and learn how to tap into all of it's current features.

What would be great is if they made a special offer to GAOTD folks to pick up a full license at a discount so we would be able to access updates and upgrades past version 6.1. Still, I've no doubt that once they add the photoshop plugin compatibility feature I will be purchasing a regular license even if at full price.

I tried many times to download the Publisher installer (publisher_setup.exe) but the download kept failing every time. So I had to cancel out and only have the main CodedColor editor installed and registered. Can you provide a direct download URL for the publisher_setup.exe installer so that it can be installed separately (and presumably will work with the already-registered main CodedColor program)?

I d/l several programs from here, but this is my first post.
This is AWESOME! Fairly easy install (had to stop first time and de-select some installs *Pixpedia* - didn't want to wait another 2 hours for the d/l to complete).
LOTS of new options to play with, I have several other graphic editors, this one looks like I'll be using more often. I never knew about this one before, glad I have it now!!!

One cannot compare this to photoshop. It doesn't allow layers first and foremost. The effects such as duotone only applied a bluish tone to a photo I used it for. It doesn't allow previews of any of the effects and some of them require changing x and y numbers to change the effect. Then you apply and get something. But that's a guessing game and not to my liking. For all the more basic effects Picassa or Infanview can do them just as well. Overall I find the program to bloat my registry and not do much for me.

Can someone put the ragistration data up here or tell me how I can get this programme to register?

I downloaded this and installed fine on Win7 64bit. The programme is too big to give a good testing in one day. There are many options to this programme and added programmes that you can download. When you install the CodedColor it wants to download Pixpedia Publisher. You don't have to, but I would recommend it. After you have installed Pixpedia you can download more stuff in the "help" menu under check for updates. I picked Clipart Library (81 megs).

I just bought Photoshop Elements 9 and would I take back Elements 9? No, because more people use and create add-ons for Elements and Elements is very powerful. Will I keep this? Yes, because there are features that Elements 9 (Organizer) doesn't have. It is worth the download.

Thank you for this nice Christmas present.

Merry Christmas to all from Canada

Not a bad free program. Looks like a lot of bang for the buck (or free!). Big learning curve for noobies.
Too many things to try out to give an honest opinion, other than it looks professional and is packing a punch.

@9Ian in Galicina The program immediately tried to "find an update", which was the warning. You can disable it by going to Tools>Program Settings>LiveUpdate and then set the "Automatically check for updates" to zero days. This is especially good for GAOTD stuff as any update will not be a full program, but a trial. I found that out the hard way with another program.

Merry Christmas!

Registration Error: Pressing the "Register now" gives an error, but it is not labelled as an error (so others just might have had the problem too): "Coded Color Registration: USER_PROD cannot add or change a record because a record in USER is needed" or the like. I think it is an error straight from the database complaining about some constraint not satisfied (SQL error). I have a german Win 7, 64 bit. Is there anything to circumvent this bug?

Thanks for everyone for their reviews. Arguably, the current free Gold Standard for photo editing is Picasa. Comparing the two, I did not find any notable benefits of this giveaway over Picasa for most casual users. Can anyone (especially the "best giveaway ever" people) suggest if there any reason to prefer this over the free and intuitive Picasa? Thanks

#32 - Noah Body - looks a bit suspicious to me. At the top of the page they state that they are supplying Pro 6.1. Looking at what you've posted here it would seem that an upgrade to Pro 6.1 would invalidate the licence. Hope that's not true.

A few INFOS from the CodedColor support team:

* The help index is unfortunately in German (thanx Murphy), so please download a new help file here (http://download.codedcolor.com/codedcolor_chm.zip) and unzip it into C:\ProgramFiles/CodedColor

Contrary to popular belief, we are developing this software in ENGLISH, and then translating it to GERMAN for every new update. The help file glitch described above is unfortunate, but bugs do creep in when you least expect them.

* We are adding more RAW files in every update.

* Photoshop plugins will be supported in the future

* We do NOT want to compare to Photoshop. CodedColor is for professional users, who want to improve large amounts of photos & images in little time.

* Pixpedia Publisher is the print layouter of CodedColor. It's a very valuable tool, if you want to create your own documents and print layouts. It's also licensed by our partner KODAK for photobooks.

* Minimization to tray can be turned off in the Program Settings. We recommend to keep it on, if you plan to use CodedColor extensively.

* We DO NOT transfer personal data to the web, except for the one-time registration. CodedColor only checks at regular intervals, if new versions are available. DO NOT install versions other than 6.1, if you plan on keeping this a freebee. Sorry, but a software with this amount of features does not develop from love & oxygen alone ;-)

* The filetype association is decided by YOU ONLY after installations. We do NOT hijack any system settings. CodedColor only used default Windows options.

* The thumb database improves speed, but may grow up to 50 MB, depending on your photo load. You can move the database to any other folder in the program settings.

ALSO, PLEASE READ THE FAQ. Thanks to everyone for trying our software. Please spread the word, so we can continue improving this software in the future. We're always happy to hear your suggestions.

An earlier post of mine is still awaiting moderation so apologies for this follow up:

#25 Fubar: Agree 100%. Some of the posts on here are plain daft by people who *cannot* have tested this software at all. As to complaints about the program's alleged "bad habits", the user options provided by the developer are as comprehensive as possible, up to and including unchecking the tick box to minimise to the tray -- why on earth can't people be bothered to actually *look* at the bloody options, and work through them, before levelling wholly unjustified criticisms on here?

(Ditto the complaint about dial-home updating: set the option box to zero days and it won't ever seek an update automatically but leave it to you to do so manually. But that's yet *another* poster who can't be a*sed to set his / her preferences.)

#31: it all depends upon the speed of your computer. In preferences, go to the file associations section and uncheck the box. Then allow the program time to set up a list of image file-types. Once the list is populated, then check whatever you wish. The program *does not* hijack previous settings: by default, it assumes everything -- as many a program does -- but it's less than a minute's job to re-set it how you want it. As with many another program.

It shouldn't be down to other posters on GOATD to explain what a program does or can be made to do: we're only working with the same information everyone else has, with the difference that folks like fubar and a few others are sensible enough to actually take the time to RTFM.

#32: it's an open-date validity. The 6.1 isn't a date but the version number of the program.

Although the learning curve for this softare is going to be a helluva lot less than for Photoshop, nevertheless, a learning curve is involved. Considering the rewards, the effort's worth it -- but what a pity that some posters rush to condemn that which they've never bothered to understand in the first place. As for all the posts about "it's great!", but nothing else, puh-leeze. . . save it for elementary school.

This is a powerful great addition for the photo editor toolbox.
Sure, it is certainly not a replacement for Photoshop. But its great for quick image enhancement and other stuff, like creating albums, add frames (from a huge selection where you can also add your own frames) and far too many tools and options to list them all.
Coded Color contains lots of very advanced tools for adjusting color, hue, shadow/lights etc. that are very easy to use but produce high quality effects. It can also create layers, has batch conversion, options for publishing as PDF or stand alone exe (album) and even burn album on CD (if you select this option on installation in the list of additional tools), shows histogram and lets you fine tune an image based on RGB or also for single color channels etc. etc.
It contains a wide selction of brushes as well and an interesting feature is the erase tab, which lets you erase any applied effect from the image with a brush on selected areas (a bit similar to Photoshop's protocoll brish).

Pixpedia Publisher is an additional tool, that you can select or unselect on installation! Its for creating and printing/ publishing Photobooks.

Also, there is a fully detailed help in English as you can download the manual from the developers website:
http://codedcolor.com/en/codedcolor.pdf
There are also many tutorials on their website.

Unlike some state, it does NOT install ANY bloatware, typical comments from people who did not even bother to really explore the program - shame on you. You shouldn't state things that you haven't explored.
It installs what you select on installation, i.e. additional /optional tools that are very useful, like panorama image creation, photobook creation and printing etc., but you can simply unselect these optional tools. Also, the working folder can very easily be changed from C:\documents... to your own picture folder (settings).

@David #31
Coded color does NOT "hijack" any system defaults! If you haven't done on installation you can go any time into the settings and unselect file extensions that you don't wish to be associated with Coded Colr, 2. the context menu entry default action ‘Browse with ColorCoded’ for all the folders is also not a "Default" but simply an additional context menu entry. If you don't like it, get something like ShellmenuView from Nirsoft (just google it, its free and portable) and you can easily disable this entry).

@Noah Body #32
I find it actually pretty clear, that "Valid until: 6.1" means the program version, as the current version is 6.1 It simply means, that this GAOT version cannot be updated (as according to the usual GAOT rules). So - and to avoid the program contacts via the web - simply deactivate the update check (settings, live update, set it to 0 (zero) instead every 15 days).

All together this is a great program and a very nice Xmas gift.

Thank you!

This software is really nice, I retouched a few photos I took when I was in Florida on the beach and this program just made the blue water "pop".

Thanks again for the awesome software!

@ #16 -- At first I thought the line in the email that says "Valid until: 6.1" meant the registration is only valid til June 1st, but I think rather it means that the registration is good til version 6.1 which is what we have received today. I think if you try to upgrade to version 6.2 or higher, the current registration will be void and you will have to pay after the 30 day trial. If they release anything up to 6.1.x (9), we might be able to update the software. Just a guess.

This is only my understanding of it though. To be absolutely sure, check with the developers.

Happy Holidays to all!

I reinstalled but still get those error messages.... but my reg completed with a different email address.

Currently, the SW is NOT usable!! It seems to lock up just after opening the sample gallery.

I keep getting an error message after installation:
"List Index out of bounds"

I close it and another one opens up, and another and another, ad infinitum.

I wonder if this isn't caused by my date syatem, whch places the date before the month.

In any vent, I cannot usae the program this way, and that is a shame.

Program looks good, but no registration. I've tried three times now for the last couple of hours -- no luck.

Registration Problem: everytime I enter my email and name and press on the button "Register now" I get an error saying "Coded Color Registration: USER_PROD: cannot add or change a record because a record in USER is needed" or similar. I have tried on 2 different PCs with the same error.

Could someone please post a DETAILED registration walkthrough, please. Or is this an error?
