A program in Windows ??? Lemme know where to find it, IF it can do (in batch) stuff like : replace all "a"'s in "e"'s (but leave extentions untouched) + add the date at the end of the filname + produce a numbered list (with stepvalue 7and start at 753) + Make the first letter of each word Uppercase, AND add the prefix "I love "Better File Rename"...
(All in one go, of course...).
Of course any combination of the 35 actions will work as well

I'll keep with this "Better File Rename" ... I can't imagine that there is anything I would like to do with file names that this app can't do ...

Nevertheless : Tanx GOTD !!!

The only reason I would need this is to rename pictures of jobs I do for the agent I work for. The thing is, all I really need to do is select a group of pictures, right click, select rename, and change the name of one, and all the rest will become the same name with a number after them. ie: picture (1) picture (2) etc. Basically, this is already an option in Windows.

Gotta agree with the majority here, many other more useful and totally free alternatives. I don't need this type of program very often or for very many uses. About once a year or so I use a random number re-namer I picked up somewhere on the net and it suits my needs just fine. Heck.... I don't even know if it CAN do more, lol, I've never looked!

So what we have here is a somewhat competent piece of subscription software that most users would need every now and then. Given the fact that theres more totally free and much more powerful alternatives than you can shake a stick at......... well , I think I'll pass.

Thanks, GAOTD! This is one of those kinds of software pieces that I don't need often enough to think about getting something specific to automate things. Looking forward to trying it out. Glad to see the other recommendations as well.

Forgive me for commenting on a program I've not yet tried (at least I won't vote it a thumbs down, as it may be a great program). I wanted to make a few minor points. [1] I'm definitely going to try Total Commander (thank you for the suggestions - can always count on commenters here). [2] Older and impatient eyes like mine appreciate a website with larger fonts and some visuals as to what I'm being sold on for $29. [3] I often use XYPlorer for renaming -- great for quick tasks, but it can be cumbersome, especially with more complex renaming tasks. However, I've never been let down by my old reliable standby "Bulk Rename Utility" program, as a couple others mentioned. It's powerful and free for life, not just one year.

One year licence? ... Don't bother!

Why don't bother? Because you're not getting a lifetime license?

Let me guess......you were born in the 1990's or later weren't you?

A little off with your guess I'm afraid, I was born in 1951.

It's a good little game though, I'd guess your age at about 25.

And you're right it's because it's only a one year license, (I thought that was, if not obvious, at least implied), but then the younger generations sometimes struggle with reading comprehension.

I might not even use it in a year, as you get older the years just sprint by.

Take care

TotalCommander can do this and real lots more.
One year licence for a poor software. Thumbs down for this time.

FreeCommander really is free. I prefer the older version which also has ftp. Renaming is really flexible. It can also link to other software for file comparison and editing.

Carl and TotalCommander is totally free now, and one of the most useful softwares ever written for the computer. http://ghisler.com/download.htm Tip; download the correct version (32 or 64bit) and look at the screenshots for a tutorial, or watch the video, and learn to use it, its easy, and it will quickly become a program you can not do without. And yes they have it written for Win 10 now.

If you have the time, check these out. All except for Total Commader, are FREEware.

The 3 best renamers
--------------------------------------
Ken-Rename-portable [ very powerful scripts capability & full featured ]
Renamer-Lite=DenisKozlov-portable [can rename selected Folders only (and not the files inside the folders). Also has scripts]
Total Commander (shareware) -portable (Multi-Rename Tool) - powerful and convenient. Also can rename selected folders only and not the files inside the folders. (which very few rename software can do) Can batch rename extensions easily.

Three that require install in Program Files directory:

@XP-Man : " Trying to charge $30 for a rename program is an insult to the intelligence of the user; a one-year license is laughable, no it's not, it's greed. "

HEAR, HEAR! It's about time this type of programmers disappear.

At first glance, this program seems inferior to the freeware Bulk Rename Utility

http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Download.php

which I have been using for some years now. Batch File Renamer is somewhat simpler, but significantly less powerful. Take your pick - I shall stay with Bulk Renamer.

Batch renaming is integrated in Total Commander -- the best filebrowser of the world, made in Switzerland, also in many other programs like ACDSee etc. No need for a one-trick-pony.
