After reading the first two words in the description, (and the rest of them) I decided I did not want to try this software. Sorry, but if a company doesn't even care about hiring a good interpreter, it makes me wonder about how much the company really cares about their products.

The PRO version of this program (so NOT this GAOTD) is very good...that's why I defined this software as a GEM!!

I just use the "tar" feature on my Linux server via SSH, no problems, beats everything else, doesn't complain.

Installed and registered without a hitch and worked flawlessly on the 1 site of my 5 that I tried it on. I'll definitely use it on the others. Didn't test the MySql database backup yet.

Sure there are other ways to do these tasks, but that's the thing about computers: there is just about always more than one way to do something. Some of them take more work than others, though. BackupSF Light 2.7.4 is an easy way to backup all or or selected files/folders on one's site/s.

Back here (see #32) to see if there are more interesting opinions, from people who miss the point (confusing website backup and regular backup) to webmasters (why they downloaded and what they think).

Usually, when I come back, I don't post (why would I?). But something's gone very wrong today.

What amazes me is the number of votes down for almost all posters, no matter what or who, excepted #3, #6, #8 for which I wonder why they got so many votes up.

I suggest GOTD to investigate the votes.

@29 (Giovanni): I wonder why you consider this software as a "gem". No matter the version, it is not, definitely.

I think people are being too hard on this software. It not only allows you to backup and FTP site to your computer automatically for free (which is impossible to find), you also get to back up your site database too. And you can choose to put your backup in the cloud (i.e. Dropbox). Wow! Love every minute of this software.

This is software that I could use, so I installed it and gave it a try. I like the simplicity, but overall I have to give it a thumbs down because of many issues: I checked the "Backup now" checkbox during project setup, but it didn't start a backup, and afterward I could not get the Backup button in the Backup Now column to work. I fiddled around with the backup schedule and eventually got it to start a backup. However, it would not correctly backup the files at the main level of a folder when some of the sub-folders were unchecked. The process of marking folders to back up is a bit tedious in the type of folder selection window used, particularly since it doesn't remember your settings and you have to start over each time you want to edit something. Each backup file seems to replace the previous one, causing it to be lost (why??). Presumably the program has to be running to do a scheduled backup, so you're expected to leave it running all the time on your system. The Help is too minimal. Too many issues, not a keeper.

Tried again, BackupSF now fails with: "SIZE not allowed in ASCII mode". Obviously de default settings during FTP are wrong, cannot change that in options.
Definitely de-install, stay with Filezilla.

I guess that many new PC/MAC users today know that backup is easier and cheaper than ever before ! With that fact on place we are able to look at software like todays GAOTD.

Software backups is stupid... Why ? It never do more backup than you tell it to do ! I have Windows, Norton and some 3rd part software on my PC and none of them backup my F: drive ! None !
BUT I use my F: drive for important photos and videos and documents, so there should be some backup work to do... and yes, I do that myself, because then do I always know 100% where the main files is... on my extern 1.5 TB HDD that is turned off when not in use ! I have all the files on my intern HDD as well.

What do you need to backup ? How often do you need to backup ? Why backup within your own 4 walls ?

1. When you have a less than 4.7 GB to backup then use a DVD RW+ media. You can even use this media the same way as a HDD !
2. > 4.7 GB then buy an extern HDD and turn it off when you don´t use it. (last 10x longer, maybe 10+ years without any error !)
3. The second you make a backup online then you´re cut-off when your providers system is down.

Do you have important and non-replaceable photos then would I never trust one media. I would always use at least DVD RW+ media (best quality you can get, TDK) and a well-known brand of a HDD (Western Digital works fine)!

BackupSF stops after 5 minutes with a "read time-out" and only 20% of the website was transferred.
Filezilla-Client does a entire website backup in 3 minutes.
De-installed.

Running Windows Vista Home

Todays Giveaway downloaded and install ok with the given Serial key. However this particular giveaway would only appeal to a very selective audiance. Those who have websites and publish content on the web.

There is really no need for such a program as this any more as most of those who are web masters know that:

1. A Plain HTML website really has no need for such a program as the HTML Pages are already on your computer and tranfered Via a FTP Program.

2. If your dealing with PHP and a SQL database the PHP Script is usually on your computer and the only need for back up is the SQL Database which can easily be done in the Cpanel control under Backup. and again you may choose the option there of the whole website or parts of it including the SQL Database.

3. Any Good hosting provider will also have a backup of your website including the databases.

I did download the program and install it. It did register fine but when I was filling in my information like site URL passwords ftp site etc... a small window poped open then dissapeared quickly. which lead me to think this program sent off my Info somewhere. Either way I did uninstall the program as I felt there is no real need for it nowadays.

The program seemed to work fine but I did not give it a full test.
To that end Thanks GOTD and BackupSF for todays download.

this seems to be in the middle of pro and home use, neither here nor there, I do not take to it! cannot quite feel comfortable with this!

I have used the FREE http://www.httrack.com/ with good success and results-
with regard to earlier mentioned method of saving website as *.mht is definitely not the answer here, you might have members and emails and all sorts of databases etc connected!

Most of the commercial cloud back up sites only accept their own back up software.

I searched for 33 minutes today and can not find a single site that will accept this interface for back up.

Unless you have your own web site to send the data to, this software can not be used for anything else because it uses FTP to transfer the data to your own server in the cloud.

To the developer, please answer, which sites accept this format of direct interface to back up my data to the cloud servers?

I have an IPower website (small, simple as I am no computer braniac at all obviously). I have been just backing up each page I write and saving my computer and my portable drive. Can anyone explain why I would use something like his or if I even need one? I'm a Nutritionist, I don't see products or services online now but plan to to soon I hope. Is that more what this is for? Backing up data bases or something? Any help or advice as to if this is needed or not is appreciated. It's not really my area of expertise at all but I love GOTD and have gotten some great stuff here that I do understand how to use. This one looks like way more people thumbs down so far. I usually go by that and the comments but am lost here even with comments. Thank you in advance for any helpful feedback!

LOL!! I got the PRO version of this GEM a few days ago on another website.... and honestly it's a shame to see that this site is used by developers to give away only the basic or light version of their program, as a trick to induce us to buy their full commercial program!

So, unless you own just 5 websites, today's giveaway is totally useless (==> not much different than a simple TRIAL)!!!

As best FREE alternative I recommend using an excellent tool called "XCLONER"!!

Some people complained about the software but they failed to understand its purpose, although well explained: it's for webmasters. People, learn to read!

Any FTP freeware among the zillions available for free, any basic PHP or python script would backup/restore a whole website or selected/last modified pages. As for mySQL, funnily enough, the authors recommend using phpmyadmin (see help pages) for restoring databases. Why not for backup then? phpmyadmin is the tool of choice for anyone dealing with mySQL databases. For free, you can manage as many databases as you want, including backup/restore (in many more ways than featured in BackupSF, Light or not).

The description here does not state it's limited to 5 websites and 5 databases (see purchase page). For that, you'll pay $25.5. Without limitations, the price skyrockets to a whopping $75. Come on, be serious. Has anyone in the "EasySector Software Developers Team" conducted a basic marketing study? Obviously, no. If they want to make money with their brains, they should spend time to develop software people are willing to pay for (and put it on GOTD of course o).

Even for free, I doubt any seasoned or even casual webmaster would download this. If they really need such software (it's only a GUI, a frontend for very basic backend job), they should consider a career change, IM(H)O.

Anyway, I prefer GOTD offers this kind of software instead of stupid useless screensavers or nth video converter. So, thanks, but not thanks.

Actually, this software is very useful. On my ISP I can download a full backup for free, but I need to buy the full version of their software to restore it!
If you have a website and you continually add or change stuff, then you need this. One day you will break it...
My only reservation is that they have artificially throttled the program so you can only download so many websites before you have to pay more. That's bad business and bad programming to me.

thought I better chime in although I don't really have a proper 'review' sorry...

it's just that I'm a web design student and I can see the use for this software so have downloaded it.

someone said Windows does this software's job, didn't know that.

if this software performs better than Windows at what this software does (surely not too difficult :-P) then I'll be happy I downloaded it.

am still working on a website for school and haven't put it on a server yet so that's why can't 'test' it properly yet...

will be happy to test BackupSF Light though once I'm ready.

just opening it and 'looking around', it seems pretty good (I know, pretty lame review, sorry :-P).

backing up all the hard work you've done for your website seems worthwhile though (even for Giveaway of the Day visitors!) so even though this software may not appeal to everyone am glad Giveaway of the Day surprises us now and then (hey at least it's not another video convertor!).

thanks for your kind understanding of my opinion that I think it's worthwhile for Giveaway of the Day to offer softwares even of only niche appeal now and then.

- who knows tomorrow you may find, as some of our 'favourites' ....not.... gush, "just what you were looking for!" lol :-D

@Keith,

if you took the time to actually read the description this s/w is designed to BACKUP WEBSITES and their associated databases not for taking kiddie snapshots.

Put your glasses on, engage brain, actually read and understand what's being offered, think about if it's what you need, then reply. Stop shooting off the hip because it shows a definitive 'No Brain Engaged' signal to the informed.

Having said all that, being a webmaster for 5 forums this will be an invaluable program for me to get my mitts on and evaluate. Have lost a heap of data in the past due to incremental backups not working.

Will evaluate and make an INFORMED comment once I've tried it.

Cheers

I would think that by version 2.7.4 a developer that wanted to introduce their product to a lot of people would regularrry use a spell check program. Sure knowing how to spell isn't the most important thing, but it does show a lack of attention to detail.

The few that need something like this should try it and vote one way or the other. Everyone else who voted is doing the authors of the program, GOTD readers and GOTD a great disservice.

yes, that I can tell its exactly that..
only 5 of both, if you look on there website on the purchase page
it says "lite" version to backup 5 sties/databases.
which is next to useless since, most people (including me) likely have more than 5 databases, but 5 sites are ok.

so yeah not much of a giveaway, so I didn't bother trying it.

I actually tried this software despite the huge number of "thumbs down" which are obviously because user's have no need for it. If you do own a website or a forum or blog of your own this type of software could be invaluable. I do tech support for a major forum company and every week I hear horror stories of people who have lost YEARS of work because they had no reliable backup.

That said unfortunately this software doesn't seem to be up to the task. Specifically the FTP backup is failing on a small site of mine. Worse due to an error on one file the entire FTP backup process aborts- this is not a reliable backup solution. The database backup has worked in my tests for far and that is the more important of the two for me, so I will keep this for now and hope to figure out the FTP issues in time.

I was never asked to enter my registration code- which was a bit confusing.

If you have a website and understand ftp access, this software is useful for backing up all the files on your website to your local computer. (most people don't host their website on their own computer because of security issues)
I'm guessing only a very small number of GAOTD users will find any use for this. I did though.
Installed/activated on Windows XP. When run, it takes you through the steps of setting up the ftp server access (login/password stuff), selecting which files on the server you want to backup, setting up the MySQL database details for backup (username/password/database name etc), and then lastly a backup schedule (daily/weekly/monthly) and location on your local system to save the files to.

Worked fine for me. But I have 2 issues with the software.

First, it should have sftp (secure ftp) in addition to ftp. Ftp access is not secure and the password is sent across the network unencrypted (in plain text). Not a good idea to use ftp access, especially if on a public network.
Second - In step 3, selecting remote folders for backup, if you go back to edit the folders that were selected initially, its not possible to remove any folders that are already there. I would consider this a major bug with the software, although all you have to do to get around it is to create a new backup project and re-select the files you want.

I didn't try the MySQL backup yet because I'm too lazy to go look up my database details right now.

By the way comment # 6 is not correct. You don't have to expand the treeview to select all the child views under it. Whatever level you select, it will select everything below it too and back up all of it (I tried it with my backup). BUT it won't show all the child views selected if you expand them, just the top level one, even though they do get included in the backup.

Thanks but if you have cPanel you already have all these options and more. Firstly, you just go into your server via FTP and download all your files, then go into cPanel and create a FULL Backup...

Backup

This feature allows you to download a zipped copy of your entire site or parts of it onto your computer.

The following are backed up and included in a zip file for your convenience:

Home Directory
MySQL Databases
Email forwarders configuration
Email filters configuration
Anyhow, doing it this way is your most reliable and trusted means of backing up your websites and databases. I wouldn't trust other 3rd party softwares to do this for me, especially for me since I have 100+ websites. Since I am not going to try this software, I won't rate it. Thanks GOTD and Easysector though for your offer.

#5- This isn't for Windows uses, but for those people who have their own website, eg, blog uses, etc, who use Wordpress. For these users, it is very common for their site to become hacked. Backing up a website is quite easy, although very manual. Backing up the MySQL database is a bit trickier, although can be done.
So, its only useful for webmasters and people that have their own website, and nothing really for Windows users or general users.

Selecting a directory to back up, should select all subdirectories and files under it. I have 50 to a hundred directories and will not spend the time to check each one. besides, if a directory was created later somewhere in the tree, it would not be backed up.

I am getting read errors and timeouts (in passive mode). I was able t ouse WS_FTP on the same files and directories with no issues.

Although I like the idea of backing up the databases automatically, the above concerns cause me not to have much faith in the program as it stands.

Sorry - cannot see the need for this software at all? Windows itself does all of this?

Scheduled backups, selective backups, selective incremental backups. Any web page can be saved as an MHT file if it is the page you want to keep as a reference.

Where is the benefit? Seems like another invention of the wheel syndrome to me. Will pass on this thanks, as I already have all these feature in Windows.
