This app sounds great for my sister and her bf who aren't pro's on a computer. I'm the one who always "optimizes" and cleans their system every week or so, so this app is great for people like that who don't know how to do it themselves. I can set it all to happen on it's own.

Thanks for this handy little app Nikolai.

"[does] things that need a specalist time and money" or something like that from the program's website. Yeah right.. how can something we've never heard of replace IT people in something so simple and with such little detail on the website?

#17. Yeah, but do you wanna pay 40 dollars for a splash screen to link to various programs they didn't make?

For anyone, if you don't like this site, just search for free serials to programs you want.

you're kidding me, right?

i'm not even going to test this as i KNOW the only thing it CAN do, is defrag, empty recylce bin and maybe chkdsk! once somethings been tweaked/set, what else it there to do. no need for some crap to run in background and at startup. totally rediculous!!

@74 122,(Fubar)
You think, you are the only one that did test... Tested OFTEN myself on several computers! - Results in short: found that its more effective to KNOW what defragmention cant and what it can´t do, and to use/store in intelligent manner, than having/using the 'only super duper defragmenter' available... Of couse ther are a lot of differences between them (and in their mathematical algorhytms most of them could be improved a lot - but if you don´t understand and have real basic knowlege it does NOT make senae to by 'the best' defragmenter.
Another result: some (mislead 'experts') use defraggers wrong and too often... And others care too little about.... And even that shows, how obsolete a prolonged discussion on OUR level is: the adequate use of a (almost every!!!) defragger makes the difference.
BTW: My computer is up in 30(!) to 60 seconds!
And to keep this you need to know more than about defragging...!

With kind regards

#86, (german)werwölfchen, instead of playing the "I'm right and you're wrong" game, why don't you run timing tests on your own PC? Time your PC's boot-up duration as accurately as you can. If there's an application or game which you use that heavily accesses multiple files, time how long it takes to start or run. It's true that disk defragmentation is only one component of performance, won't have much impact on applications which aren't disk I/O bound, and you won't see a difference between defragmentation strategies unless a large number of files are involved. Then download a trial version of PerfectDisk. My recommendation for the initial defragmentation is to do a full defragmentation, then an offline defragmentation, then another full defragmentation (the first defragmentation will consolidate free space and defragment most files, the offline defrag will defragment the system, paging, and hiberfiles, and the third defragment will clean up any performance-related partial defrags from the first pass, and moved files from the offline defrag, thus approximating longer-term use of the defragmenter). Then run your timings again. Another relevant timing is how long a typical defragmentation pass takes. Yet another issue is how well the defragmenter performs under low free-space conditions. There are so many files that a high-quality defragmenter like PerfectDisk defragments and places which the built-in defragmenter doesn't, that I think you'll be surprised by the result.

I downloaded this tool just to see how it works with my Vista system. I like the fact that it runs in the background when I am not working on my computer. I like not having to run Disk Cleanup manually also. I turned off the function checking if I need to defrag as I have that set to run once a week through the task scheduler. I also have it set to run my Ad-aware while I am idle so that I do not have to run it manually (I still do from time to time however).

In short, I think this is a good little tool but I do not think it is worth paying almost $40 for.

I have XP SP2; though it does have the utilities features - defrag, disk cleanup, etc., you have to schedule each one as to when/what time you want it to run. When I ran WinMe, I could configure specific times for each thing to run, or choose from a list of specified times to run. I always chose the latter, because I didn't have to figure how much time to allow each item to do its job.

Having mentioned the above, I have McAfee Security Center which has that feature that does what today's giveaway does. If I didn't have that, or if it wasn't doing the job as scheduled, and was letting me down, I would download Background Optimizer and use that.

#78, Nikolai--thanks for the reply, and the info is helpful I think. You make a good point about the learning curve for XP's built-ins. But if B.O. can start up whenever it wants to without my being able to control the times, etc., then I'm afraid that it could ruin a CD or DVD that was being burned. I am not a software developer, so I'm not sure the SDK would do me any good, (although the possibilities of designing other functions is intriguing) so is there any other way to tighten the parameters of this program you referred to as flexible on when the program can decide to run, to avoid making bad CD and/or DVD "coasters"? Thanks again for the software and your responses.

well sure this program might be good if it had more options than simply the task scheduler in windows.

but if you could schedule if your computer is idle AND there is no programs running (i.e., programs in the task bar running that are not any of the "optimizing" program that can be opened with this software)

Hmmm. temp file cleanup... One reason I moved mine to an easy spot, I manually clean before certain tasks- at least on one system.

I use dual-boots to win98 to force delete and re-creation of my swap files on the 3 win2k machines- but then, in general, I use different computers on my LAN for different tasks.

one feature I'd like to suggest is the ability to reserve a block of time, preferably a couple, when the program cannot launch tasks, to allow free run to scheduled backups and server updates.

I'll look into how easy it is to launch and shut down this app via external control in the meantime.

#106 What can do Background Optimizer:
- Defragment your hard drives (when it's need).
- Disk cleaner - clean unneeded files.
- Ad-aware module for autoscan and clean spy and viruses.
- Ccleaner module for advanced clean.
- Cmd module for run user program.
- RegOrganizer module for registry optimization.

#27........you gave the secret away. LOL.

#29.....I was waiting for a comment like that. Yes any programs running does slow your computer down and wouldnt be worth running at all. I prefer to do my clean ups before I close down and defrags on Sundays.

The day they bring out computers that do all this and more, without compromising performance is the day I will be happy to pay thousands for.

But then what will we do with all our so called experts?

After having tried it, the program is more like a launcher (and should become also a scheduler) for cleaning applications, which if further developped, would be very interesting.

I would suggest as a future feature, besides the automated functions, the possibility of launching some individual modules/programs at a any given time:

1) Any time, predefined by the user;
2) At computer startup (jv16 Power Tools has this option, for cleaning temporary files);
3) At shutdown of the computer.

Many people prefer that cleaning of temporary files should be done either at startup, or at shutdown of the computer. Otherwise, it could be very dangerous doing computer cleaning, even at idle times, in the midst of an important job (which could be recovered in case of failure, through the temp files).

I appreciate all the efforts made by the developper of this program.

Let's just say that there are better products out there for less money. I didn' care for the implementation of the parts nor the choic of components. If you didn't know about computers you might be satisfied. Remember, we have a bunch of extrememly fine computer investigator's here and very little is going to get past them. As far as I am concerned that makes this site as important as the free software. Thanks GAOD for providing this proving group for us where free speech is considered a good thing.

Understand that this forum allows software developers to offer a limited version of their software (no updates or reinstall) in exchange for valuable feedback about their product. That would include feedback as to how much people would be willing to pay for said software. So, to all the people who go ballistic when other people complain about the price: you are attempting to stifle valuable feedback and more than likely, wasting your time.

over priced program using external programs.. typically windows components.. a monkey could code a program such as this and would have the intelligence not to sell it at such a rediculous price...

sure the developer is trying to prove he knows the windows api, but theres plenty of other developers out there that do the same...
if the program had all the utilities self contained and didn't require external programs then maybe the price could justify that...

for now, i'll pass, if i want to make my own scheduler i will.. after all its a simple time monitor with a shellexecute/createprocess... hardly rocket science..

Agree fully with "The Grouser"
I am real happy to have a app do the daily/nightly/weekly runnings of defrag and whatever for me.
And... sure a "self written" script could do it... but I`m for one is way too lazy to do THAT lol.
Thumbs up from me- AND this works.
Also: dont forget Nicolay are all open for any suggestions and wishes-I am sure he would not say so without meaning it!
I downloaded had it run when i was away- Id also be willing to pay for it :-)
Thanks!

Windows experts seem to ignore the high value of System Automation.
A relative small market that justifies an high cost.
GAOTD should become a GAOTW, some kind of Introductory Program, with more time to install, review, discuss (and unfortunately moderate).
Having had some bad experience, installing GAOTD programs in the hurry, I would really appreciate it.

#15 I couldn't agree with you more. Most (but not all) of the people that leave comments here are just plain rude and greedy - if it's not worth $80+ then they'll leave a disrespectful comment. I've said this many times if you don't like it then don't download it, GO AWAY. GAOTD I really don't see any point of the comments here, I really believe you are not doing yourself or the software companies you are representing any favours. It's all rather negative, which surely is not the sort of site you want to portray. You will not get any further comments from me here, and yes I'm expecting further negative replies about what I've written. Most of you are very sad.

Hey everybody,

I`ve installed, activated, and setsetup, but i have kept my computer busy today so i have no way of describing it`s function. since i am so busy on line, that a program like this makes sense for me. Time will tell. However, I did not find an auto shutdown, or the ability to import other applications which i would like to have auto run and complete. No chance of that because most meed help to finish.

now I read the comments every day even when I don`t bother to download the offering. Some are helpful, some i agree with, and others Not.
I had put up a blog for discussion of gripes and Complaints, but it was hacked, and will not return as it was.

I still believe everyone has a right to their opinion, but please keep it Civil!!

Thanks Nikolai and GOTD team

well, Nikolai, looking at it after later comments shows that it can launch a different set of programs than the default, I think it's right useful after all.

There are some housekeeping items that do end up manually launched that don't fit a timed approach and can be a pain waiting to end. Like gathering emails from an account that sometimes gets 5k messages.

Downloaded and experimenting, thanks.

For a Ict developper it is not ok even free.
For a geek it is a total waste off time
to DOWNLOAD it.
to INSTALL it,
and worst off all to USE it !

BTW Nicolai,
I appreciate your efforts to make a general interface,
but you are looking for 50 bucks in the sector with the greatest part of the computers users (90 pc).

@74 "PageDefrag" : free, now resides on Microsoft´s (sigh)... and no heavy-weight, cost intensive defragmenter needed for this; Pagefile is the only point with wich you are right.
And, btw, all defragmenters must do this job before windows starts as the above mentioned free "PageDefrag".
"... built-in defragmenter won’t consolidate free space..." is right (I didn´t say anything against), but is not really a point as I claimed before
"...measurable result..." are gone very soon.
But let´s stop the discussion it here: only few people would and/or could follow this it would become too technical and it´s a _v_e_r_y _ l_o_n_g_ chapter...

And if you like the game('mine is the best defragmenter'): OK - play it again.
Honest investigations prove that I´right - but that would´t sell (as it is for many tools)!!!

greetings
