Certain issues keep reappearing at GAOTD. Two of them are :-

1) Ashampoo’s software is regularly praised and for good reason. I have been using their burning program for years and it is really excellent. However, Ashampoo's confusing way of identifying their products is a real problem. It seems to be intentional because they would have to be incompetent to such a high degree not see how much difficulty their "system" causes that the only outer explanation is that they are using this to trick people into updating to another version – see Nos. 3 & 6.

2) The high repetition rate of the same or similar types of software at GAOTD. If I were able to formulate the policy of which software to offer I would pay close attention to comments about this. They have recently become quite frequent and continuing to ignore them could lead to a drop-off in visits to the site.

The post by No. 67 is right on target where he says :-

“Nowadays, possibly the only thing I consistently get out of going to this website is for further knowledge from informed posters about computers and software in general — and for names of OTHER, better, and ALWAYS-FREE software that is available “out there”.
In this regard, Giovanni is a particular and consistently-useful resource, and we have to thank him for that. GAOTD had better watch out — he could start his own website. I’m sorry to say it, but it could hardly be worse than GAOTD in recent days.”

His comments also refute what Post No. 57 says about Giovanni – Giovanni: 349 positive evaluations v. His post: 1 positive evaluation. I do not understand why there are people like him who argue that we have to do extra work to use software when it is perfectly possible for the producers to take action to make this unnecessary.

I'm afraid, coming here rather late in the day, at least three of the commenters have "taken the words right out of my mouth", as I couldn't agree more with what they say. Like #5 Giovanni writing that GAOTD should "focus their attention on LESS SATURATED fields than this," otherwise their whole raison d'etre is likely to be called into question by those they propose to serve.

As #20 MikeR says, GAOTD "was founded on the idea of allowing consumers to access and retain genuine commercial software with genuine retail prices — not promotional fluff..." -- the sort of thing we have been seeing FAR TOO MUCH of recently. It is a big turn-off. And I see that #32 ITepb also rails against the trend in GAOTD to keep offering "run of the mill" type programmes almost every day recently.

Indeed, if GAOTD continues to keep offering these "dime a dozen" type programmes, even though they're free, I will be one of the many, I suspect, who will pretty soon start looking elsewhere.

Nowadays, possibly the only thing I consistently get out of going to this website is for further knowledge from informed posters about computers and software in general -- and for names of OTHER, better, and ALWAYS-FREE software that is available "out there".

In this regard, Giovanni is a particular and consistently-useful resource, and we have to thank him for that. GAOTD had better watch out -- he could start his own website. I'm sorry to say it, but it could hardly be worse than GAOTD in recent days.

As I have an SSD I will pass on this one. It wont help me one bit at all.

As others have mentioned it would be nice to see something new on here rather than the optimisers/dvd rippers/cleaners etc. Anyway just my two pence worth.

Unfortunately I havent downloaded a single piece of software from this site in over 6 months and to be honest I struggle to even check it now due to the uninteresting offerings - and that includes the weekends.

To #1 Greg – Ashampoo doing the same sales pitch as their Ashampoo Burning Studio 2012 offered here last month.

To #20 MikeR – Totally agree. I thought the point of GAOTD was to allow us to test their market products and from our comments allow them to improve. Sorry GAOTD but there are tons of less intrusive selling platforms out there.

I visualize most of the 2012 vs V9 questions being identical to those for GAOTD offering of 5th Oct. Just substitute Ashampoo WinOptimizer 2012 vs V9 for Ashampoo Burning Studio 2012 vs V11.

And thanks to the as-ever erudite Giovanni for keeping us sane.

Frankly, I have become disillusioned by these tune-up utilities. About 3 or 4 months ago there was a giveaway of something similar to this, it may have been PC TUNE UP, I don't really know. When I ran it under Win 7 x64, 6 GB RAM... it offered to tune up my Internet Connection configuration. It wasn't until later that I discovered that my maximum download rate had fallen from 790 kB/s to about 500 kB/s. Not cool.

I am posting this comment to recommend that as good a software can seem, they can make mistakes. Don't be like me: Make a backup before doing anything with software like this, and do not run more than one "tune-up" task at a time. Be wise and learn about what you are doing before blindly entrusting configuration tasks to automated software utilities.

Stay safe folks !

As a computer tech I can tell you all for certain that NONE of these so called "Optimizers" will increase the speed of your computer. The key to speeding up your computer is to eliminate unnecessary processes. Not create new and useless ones.

I have many Ashampoo products and all have worke3d flawlessly. I currently just use CCLEANER and as it has always done a good job for me, I am not going to download today's offering. Each time you purchase a product from Ashampoo you earn"yiggles", points that can be used to purchase (free) any Ashampoo product. Without even trying today's offering I would say that it should work as advertised. So try it and see if it does what you want it to. After all it is free! If you don't like it, unistall it! Thanks GOTD.

I like many have varies licenses to Ashampoo products. The only one I use are Advanced Burning Studio, Ashampoo Office and Photo Commander.

I can't beleive the number of system files that are listed as missing after the scan. I checked and they are all there. Fire extensions are reduntant as they are re-created on system restart.

I said it once and I'll say it again. If a certain custom control has no data, that does not mean it's not necessary

I'll stay again from one-click maintenance program. Pass on this one.

If you go to the Ashampoo site and click on 'DownLoads" you will see a list of everything they offer. Near the bottom of the list is WinOptimizer 8 [ver 8.13 @$29.99) and WinOptimizer 9 (ver9.04.31 @$39.99).
If you click on version 8, a detail page opens with features and details for this version. Haven't finished comparison but the info is there for those that want to do it.
As stated by others above I have used many Ashampoo products in the past and find them very useful and user friendly. They do send you lots of 'opportunities' to upgrade and try out their products. Some offers are very good--- as much as 80% off. Use of a separate email address is an excellent suggestion made earlier in the comments above.
or setup filters, send to recycle, and have WinOpt 12 delete them for you....

I have installed Ashampoo products on my computer before and liked some of them. My concern today is: I have read each and every post (345 being the last as of now) and none of them was from Ashampoo. They don't even bother to post any comments and answer questions. Seems to me that they don't really care about today's offer.

After seeing all the irrelevant whining in the comments here, I am disgusted enough to engage the rest of you leaving such ludicrous comments! This edition of WinOptimizer is a freeware version, that's why it is not assigned a number like 6, 8, 9, etc. Occasionally to generate more public interest in their products, Ashampoo makes available freeware versions using the year of release. Ashampoo makes incredible products and as as a top IT tech and owner of a system build/repair, software development, and instruction facility, I can tell you this is an excellent product. For all those naysayers talking about "freeware alternatives like the jerk in comment #5, THIS IS FREEWARE! We have tested all Ashampoo products (as well as tens of thousands of other software titles on the market today), and Ashampoo's WinOptimizer, Photo Commander, Burning Studio suites, and others are all fine programs.

For those who say they are "spammed" by Ashampoo, you should read the fine print when installing and using the program. You have the option to opt-out of email lists but too many of you click without reading. Learn a lesson! If you don't want them to email offers to you for other software at great prices, then opt-out of the emails. If you mistakenly receive any after opting out, send a friendly reminder to their customer service via their web page and they will make sure they don't send you any more emails.

Instead of rambling on with worthless comments and whining and grumbling here about users' ignorance of the business practices and version numbers of this particular company, and trying to promote other products you like (some of those posted by #5 are malware by-the-way), please leave this site and browse elsewhere. Keep commments here RELEVENT to the title of software offered.

Ashapmoo WinOptimizer 2012 is the FREEWARE version of 8, because it has been several years since their last freeware release, and because they have 9 available with just a few more features. There is no scam. It's an excellent product.

I have been visiting here for a very long time (years) and I have tried pretty much every program of this type, especially some of the more recommended tools and suites. I am fed up with the constant emails about upgrades and offers from Ashampoo as well; I agree with everyone who has registered that complaint. I am a Kingsoft PC Doctor fan now (see #5 Giovanni), and I am more than happy to stick with it! This is not a review just a comment.
Thanks GAOD.

Ashampoo writes very good software but their sales attack that includes endless emails and attempted hijackings when an update is applied pretty much makes me stay away from them. Their ashampoo toolbar attack which I accidentally installed was only gotten rid of when I restored my PC to a before "Ashampoo" date and then painfully reupdated Windows and other programs. Never again will I go near Ashampoo nor will I ever buy one of their programs.

(sigh) @ post #38, Phil K: I never mentioned 'opting out' (as you well know.) Besides: "opting out" is not and never will be an infallible method of avoiding the clutter of spam. Server-side is the best way: in gmail, for example, you simply tag an unwanted message 'Delete / do not send to spam' and that's it, every email from that source will forever after go straight in the trash on Google's computer. You don't see it. Don't know about it. Don't get it on your desktop via Windows Mail. You just go online once a week and empty your webmail trash. . . and that's it. Sadly, posts like yours serve only to harm GAOTD, not help, because all you're doing is making it seem that GAOTD users should stay well clear of this site whenever there's an Ashampoo offer about.

Perfect! I've been using Ashampoo's products for years now and have never been disappointed. From their Burning Studio, Backup Software, and Cleaning Softwares. I have used many registry cleaners, defrag products, and burning software and Ashampoo products (JVPowertools, CCleaner, and Ashampoo products have NEVER messed up my computer and even sped it up quite a bit with the Ashampoo defrag utility in this giveaway.

It is version 8.14, not 9 but they do give you a fantastic product, not on a TRIAL period like some but for as long as you want, and they give you a break if you want to update to the newer version. I mean really, they do need to make some money and their offer today, even if older is great.

I've installed it on a Windows 7 64 bit computer without a burp. It doesn't slow down my system or cause crashes since it defragments in the background when the computer is using low resources or is idle.

I've went from one defragmenter to another hoping to gain more stability or speed, I've tried the best free (and still stand by JV Powertools, Auslogics and Piriform, but my computer seems to prefer Ashampoo for defragmenting in realtime, and a One Click Optimizer.

Thank you Ashampoo, a winner!

I like Ashampoo products and have a number of them. Giovanni today recommended a program by Toolwiz. I can say that Toolwiz doesn't care one bit about customers. I downloaded one of their programs and waited weeks for even a reply that they'd get back to me in a day or two. In another week I uninstalled and would NEVER download another Toolwiz program. As for today's offering I compared it with CC Cleaner Pro (Thanks Giovanni for let us know when the Pro version was available for free) and it found 47 more issues than today's program-----similar to poster #10. And, yes, like #26 I think CC Cleaner is more aggressive and it has caused me problems in the past and that is why I create a restore point as well as back up the registry before trying these programs----a move I recommend to everyone.

Just so you know--there is no such thing as "defragging the registry" because the registry is not a single file but is comprised of several files located in different folders. So in order to "defrag the registry" you would have to clean it and then defrag the entire hard disk.

To all those who complain about "spam" from Ashampoo (and possibly other GAOTD suppliers):

Gmail and Yahoo and Hotmail (a.k.a. Windows Live) and AOL and GMX and Inmail24.com all provide free email service, and you can have more than one. Go to any of these sites and open a "throwaway" account that you will use ONLY for software registration. Then your regular email won't be cluttered with product information and promotions that you don't want to see.

I have a few free registry cleaners/file removers/disk optimizers that I like, so I won't try Ashampoo WinOptimizer. But I also will never have anything bad to say about the company that sells the best Office suite on the planet: Ashampoo Office 2012. It's not free like some of the competition, but it is light and compact and has excellent compatibility with Microsoft file formats such as DOCX, XLSX, etc. (And it can even be made portable by creating one tiny file in the program's directory.) (Yes, it is the same as Softmaker Office, but it is a little cheaper because it omits a non-essential component that assists in creating Visual Basic scripts.)

My current favorites (always subject to change as I discover new ones) for registry cleaning/disk optimizing etc.:

CCleaner
Jet Clean
Wise Disk Cleaner
Registry Life
Comodo Systems Utilities

@ Bill, #26: Super post. I agree with every word, which is why I didn't get on that worn-out 'Ashampoo Spams!!!!' bandwagon in my earlier post because if some people on here can't even be bothered to arrange server-side email filtering then they've only themselves to blame for their own lethargy.

But that's not the only thing they might blame themselves for: Ashampoo regularly slashes its retail prices for those registered with it. Any excuse will do: last week, it was the company's 13th anniversary, so you could pick up the genuinely EXCELLENT Burning Studio 11 for £7GBP or even WinOptimizer 9 itself for the same price.

If you don't want to hear from Ashampoo, then don't. Simple. If you don't mind hearing from Ashampoo, then on a regular basis the company will offer you a genuine bargain. 'S your choice.

My grumble today, as I made clear, was about vapourware (which the non-existent WinOptimizer 2012 actually is) being touted on here, complete with a picture of a box that doesn't exist, either. Ashampoo may like to play silly sods with behaviour like this but it's not what GAOTD is about.

As an experiment, the next time you install a fresh copy of windows, do NOT run a registry cleaner or any type of system optimizer. In fact, if MS doesn't have a tool for it, don't use a 3rd party tool. AV/firewall ... fine. Disk defrag ... fine. Registry optimizer ... nope. System optimizer ... nope.

Why? Ask yourself this: Don't you think MS has an interest in making their product as fast and stable as possible? If any of these things actually made Windows better, wouldn't Microsoft offer them? A 3rd party tool might be better than Microsoft's but IF MS doesn't offer one then you shouldn't try to find one from a 3rd party.

The result of this self-imposed austerity is that you'll be amazed at how trouble-free your system will remain. The more crap like this you put on your system, the more trouble you will have. A crowded registry won't slow things down and will cause significantly fewer problems than attempting an automatic fix for it. Certainly, there ARE some minor tweaks that will help performance but you don't need something like this offering to implement them.

And that's a fact.

If you allow Ashampoo to send you emails, you'll get deep discounts on their products (albeit every week or two is a little excessive).
You may not want to let it reset your home page and search though. :)

I won't post the prices of the items I have, but it's worth it to wait around for the deals in your email. The last purchase I made was "GadgeIt" - cool little Ashampoo gadget maker, and the price was right.
They keep your keys on file, but you may not be able to download an old version. If they have a downloadable version of a deal here without the wrapper, it may be worth it to grab a back-up of the registerable demo. THe GAOTD key may or may not work on another install later. For purchased products, you'll typically find your download available for a long time, and their support is solid.

Regarding this giveaway, it works fine and I'm a big Ashampoo fan (I even use their toolbar), you may want to give it a try just because Ashampoo products are worthy.... but I've always used Glary as a go-to optimizer, and registry cleaner. Credit to Giovanni for pointing out the obviously plentiful freely available options with these kinds of tools. Never heard of the Easus cleaner - that's an eyebrow raiser because they make great software.

Thanks again Ashampoo and GAOTD!

No mention of this program on shamps website, just links to main page, which I must say is a mess.

As always Giovanni to the rescue. ToolWiz looks very promising, going to try it out. I still use IOBit Toolbox Portable, it's been discontinued, but replaced by an install version Advance System Cleaner 6. I just take the exes and put them in the Toolbox Portable.

To GAOTD, I'd like to see less, defraggers, registry / system cleaners, image backup programs, quirky imaging programs, and more worth while programs, like full pro versions of Virtual Machines, Uninstall tools (Wintools Pro and Total Uninstall), Antivirus (Malwarebytes Pro, Auslogic Antivirus, Emsisoft Antimalware, Nod32, Trustport, Panda Pro, IOBit Antivirus 2013), Firewalls (Sphinx Windows 7 Firewall Pro, Auslogic Firewall Pro), Sound Programs (MediaMonkey Pro, Goldwave), DVDFab Pro, Clone CD, Daemon Tools Pro, main stream CAD/Graphics....

I understand this is a website to provide free to us software with some advertising dollars to you, however, keep offering run of the mill dime a dozen programs like these and people will start going elsewhere.

Some clarification. I had previously gotten WinOptimizer 2012 through another giveaway, and the bottom line is that its their free version of the WinOptimizer software series, used as an ad-supported come-on to upgrade to WinOptimizer 9.

My biggest beef with this software is that you can run it and uncheck certain settings, such as disabling the CD burner function in Windows, only to find the setting automatically re-checked the next time you run the program.

This became such an annoyance that I uninstalled the software.

v.8.14........... if I did not already have Win Opt. 9 (actually 9.04.31), I would have this offer downloaded by now. As far as I know, they have not offered totally free a version above Win. Opt. 6 before, albeit they will update these freebies just as if you had purchased a full license. How many companies do this? Very few.

There are differences obviously between versions, someone has listed, up above, what is new in v.9,{if only GAOTD users would read the comments and not keep asking the same thing}.

Readers will know I am a big fan, and generally buy their software at deeply discounted prices: I do not do this because I am daft but because they have such excellent products.

Also, as I keep saying, programmes like CCleaner, Winutilities find more to delete because they are very much more aggressive and will remove many things that you may prefer to keep.

For example Ash. Win.Opt does not empty out my Start Menu programme shortcuts, unlike Winutilities in particular but I think Ccleaner also. Naturally, it will do all that if you tell it to but the default settings are there for a reason and new users should not change those until familiar with all the functions.

Yes, you get Service Announcements. Is it so hard to click NO? You may actually wish Ash. Snap v.6 (or whatever is offered) for peanuts. Virtually every developer using GAOTD has some way to send more offers so why pick on Ashampoo? Get real people, the Company needs some purchasers so it can keep improving products.

v.9 is certainly much faster than v.6 and it's live tuner is brilliant, sits on the taskbar, minding it's own business. The background defrag is so good, I cannot remember the last time I had to use Defraggler from Piriform (Best IMHO).

Just install properly and you will NOT get toolbars added etc. Do you refuse to install Adobe/Oracle programmes because one has already ticked the McAfee install box and the other wants you to add the Babylon Search bar? No, your computer/internet surfing would cease to work; stop commenting on Ashampoo as if it uniquely tries to ensnare the unwary. If you prefer no emails then opt out.

Every time Ashampoo appears here we see the the same moans and groans. I do not know why Ashampoo bothers to offer here, they certainly do not have to.

Here is a radical suggestion: make up your own minds, eh?

BTW. I am guessing here but I imagine v.10 will be launched sooner rather than later, as it will have specific tools for Windows 8. That's fine by me as I don't see me using Windows 8 for a long time.

I hope someone finds this post useful.

Just be careful, the last time I signed up for one of their products I got HAMMERED with promos. It took forever to finally get them to stop spamming me.

I have win optimizer 9 and have had it a long time along with many of there other software. They are excellent and most certainly can always find something on sale with them and their tech support is very good. Considering I already have win optimizer 9 I do not need this. This however is a keeper... I am very pleased with their software and it always does what it says. I am on their mailing list and they are working on all software now to conform to windows 8 also... I have never not once had any problem at all with any of their software and I have been using it for about 5 years now...

once you got your registration, Rainer Lesani from Ashampoo will be on your tail for as long as you keep that email address. 100s of times I have requested NOT to send me emails because I purchased Ashampoo Snap 5. My requests were ignored. If you Google for spam from Ashampoo you will see I'm not making this up. I'm just saying so that you know...

Ashampoo Snap is a good product and so may be Win Optimizer.
But I'm NOT OK with Ashampoo's policy regarding to ignore paid user requests to be removed from their mailing lists.

I note it doesn't say it covers Windows 8. I'd think any software being offered now should at least cover the latest operating system as well as previous versions. The exclusion of Win 8 from it's list of operating systems stops me from proceeding any further with even downloading it. Anything that states "2012" should cover what is current. As a few have stated... it's last year's version... so, obviously not for THIS years O/S

WinOptimizer 2012 is the name of the program, not the version. The version number appears to be 8.1.4.10786.
For those squacking about Ashampoo trying to sell other products or a new version of this program; Do you really think that other companies offering programs of GOTD are doing so out of the goodness of their hearts. Think again---They are advertising their products. Ashampoo does the same except they are up front with it. I have many of their products and am very satisfied with all of them.

Just to be clear here: Ashampoo WinOptimizer 2012 does not exist. It's a confusingly titled piece of promotional software that has never been on sale at $39.95 and never will be. Ignore, then, the page-top text about The program is available for $39.99 (for WinOptimizer 9), but it will be free for our visitors as a time-limited offer. It is not WinOptimizer 9 and trying to pretend that it is, is downright silly -- especially as a none time-limited freeware version of WinOptimizer is always available from Ashampoo itself:

https://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/3606/System_Utilities/Ashampoo-WinOptimizer-Free

Ashampoo's sales gimmicks are many and varied but it's a pity GAOTD is being recruited as a platform. After all, this superb website was founded on the idea of allowing consumers to access and retain genuine commercial software with genuine retail prices -- not promotional fluff of the kind conjured up by Ashampoo's Marketing & Public Relations department and offered on here today.

Thanks but no thanks, GAOTD.

Generally speaking, Ashampoo software IS pretty good at what it's meant to do, but I've got Toolwiz Cares (recommended by Giovanni above - and a short while ago), so won't be installing this apparently-renamed-for-GOTD-version.

Of course, different software will always find stuff that others have 'missed', but Monkey's (#10) '49MB' found by CCleaner does seem ...excessive... Personally, I wonder what would have happened the other way round..?

Whilst I wasn't aware of the specifics Peter Pan (#11) mentions, I never allow ANY software to set itself/its vendors/its 'partners' as defaults - and neither should anyone else IMO.

Also, if you don't need to know that their janitor's son's girlfriend's mother's uncle's cousin-twice-removed's niece's cat has just had kittens, meaning Ashampoo are celebrating with another temporary price reduction (which, almost inevitably, gets 'extended due to popular demand'), I'd advise you to access your account and switch off as many email options as possible.

#10. Like i say previous on these other brands of "payware" optimizers and registry cleaners. Not one product can solve ALL pc problems. Just out to scam the gullible public.

Personaly If you KNOW how to manually remove temp..etc files & use "MSCONFIG" "DISK CLEANUP"..SIMPLE STUFF built in to OS "WINDOWS" u will do far better, I have purchased a "WINOPTIMIZER 8 & CORE TUNER" from Ashampoo's products, cleaned/optimised my system...Which has an SSD an "bootup/shutdown" times were from 8-10sec=NO OPTIMIZER (OF ANY SORT)After WINOPTIMIZER etc.. went up to bout 40-50secs, NO BULL!!!
ps. Most "regestry Cleaners/Defragers" Will & have more chance of REMOVING NEEDED strings & YOU DO NOT NEED TO DEFRAG the REGISTRY!!!
EXAMPLE: I had FULL versions of "TUNEUP UTILITIES 2012" & ADVANCED SYSTEM CARE PRO 5" used TuneUp to Clean & Optimize WHOLE System,
OPENED ADV sys care pro 5 rescaned....Well I Had Like 14825 Files tht Need cleaning...lol
I did & Back to TUNEUP Scanned one more...lol
You have 428010 files tht need cleaning, 2mins after been fully "OPTIMISED" by both progs....C'MON GUYS!!!
ITS ALL BLOAT WARE!!!...
