Following up my comment (58) - Freestudio DVDVideosoft mp4 convertor handles the mp4 file with embedded flash that Aiseesoft, Tipard, Aimersoft and a few others couldn't handle. Format Factory stalled at high CPU at 49%.

Sometimes freeware wins..!

In response to those that disagree with Giovanni and others suggesting freeware alternatives to the GAOTD offerings, I believe it is appropriate and useful for users of the GAOTD service. Even though the GAOTD is free, the point is how well does the GAOTD offering compare in relation to what is already available in the freeware world. If a commercial product is going to compete, it should offer significantly better functionality and features than available freeware. Otherwise why would I consider buying it? Maybe I would for strong REAL support since many freeware offerings have limited direct help and support beyond user forums. But that would only be an issue if the program was overly difficult to use, or was defective in someway.
GAOTD Team please keep offering the "Good,Bad,and Ugly" and users please keep giving us your experience with the GAOTD offerings and the freeware options to consider.

What's the difference between Media Converter Ultimate and Video Converter Ultimate? The first handles MEDIA, which includes Audio and Video. The second only handles video. So there's not really much need for this program if you already have the media converter. There might be some difference in formats but I couldn't find any.

While this offering doesn't seem to be that bad, as mentioned above there is really nothing that sets it apart technologically. Maybe we need someone to actually use all these converters and tell us how they benchmark in speed and quality.

After having tested this product on three videos, I certainly cannot fault it for any obvious reason. However, not having any side-by-side comparison I cannot give a rave review either. Certainly you can't go wrong with this, it isn't going to bite you. But from the point of view of audio, you cannot listen to a pair of speakers in one store and then go across the street and compare a competing brand of speakers at the competitor's store.

So the best I can say is try it. It does work without issue.

If anyone gets to read my comments in the alloted time period for this giveaway, I can tell you that when you complete the registration, you CAN use you own name as long as you use the serial number provided.

Finally, please don't let the comments above about SPAM or web-page redirects bother you. I am confident that the advertising content is only forced on today, as the giveaway day. If it does extend beyond that, all you need do is block the application in your firewall or simply uninstall it ... but not trying this application out of fear is just plain dumb.

#57 Thanks, but to me, the fact that GOTD has provided us with nine similar programs this year just proves the incredible value of GOTD. By doing this, it should allow us to test a veritable smorgasbord of software.

When I want a particular type of program, I want the one that is RIGHT FOR ME. Sometimes, I get so fussy that I have to pass up on five, ten, maybe twenty other programs. Finding such numbers of programs to check out, however, is a real pain. This site, and most especially its users and their comments, are total gold!

Probably just as valuable, however, are the suggestions that people make, which teach me how the programs work, and give me ideas about how best to evaluate the programs that I am investigating.

A standing ovation to GOTD and all you guys out there! Keep up the good work.

RE: Browser Home Page HIJACK

There is a manual override for this annoyance. You can fix it by right-clicking your browser's Shortcut icon and going to Properties. In the Shortcut Tab, change the value in the "Target" field as explained here:

http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?/topic/168959-how-to-stop-your-homepage-from-being-changed/

Some other program triggered a similar thing for me today, after I installed a bunch of new software yesterday. Even though I'm very careful to disable and reject all crapware, a re-direct to some "Delta" search engine invaded all my browsers, except for Safari. In Chrome, the Settings re-config failed to take care of the problem but the Properties trick finally did it for me. If you guys like this program and the only issue is the upsell re-direct, you might be able to bypass it and keep the program without being bugged to buy.

I have no use for this particular giveaway but read the Comments every day and I want to thank everyone who has ever shared their opinion about a product. It's helpful to know what problems each one of us is facing and if it would be worth going through the trouble of installing and uninstalling.

In any case, thanks to the GAOTD for running this site. Even though this converter is not for me, I have found a few gems in the past, that have made a great difference. Shout out to Giovanni for providing so generously his free alternatives. I feel like I have gone through a mini-University on freeware just from reading his posts.

All your feedback is much appreciated.

... And hope the work-around with the Shortcut works for most of you.

Video Converter Ultimate looks the same as Total Media Converter.
Just look at the sites and the screenshots:

http://www.aiseesoft.com/total-media-converter.html

http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/total-media-converter-platinum/screen.jpg
http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/video-converter-ultimate/screen.jpg

By the way, I have Total Video Converter Platinum (from GAOTD) and the subtitles option never works (It's always grey). I sent them an email asking what is wrong and they said that I should buy the latest version of their Video Converter! They have a ton of video converters and of never said which one should I buy.

Of course I never bought any of their products.
And I agree with #57 (Old Man).

v6.3.6 and v6.3.60 basically mean the same thing. What's the difference between v1.0.0.0 and v1? NOTHING! It's the exact same thing because the zeros don't mean anything. It's common sense.

I'm not sure why the publisher thinks that harassing users with forced web pages is likely to cause purchases? Maybe the idea is that it will be so annoying that users will pay. I don't think so. I think it will just make people think poorly of the company. Unfortunately since the software itself is of good quality.

Most free special editions like the one from Magix are missing essential codecs.

For all recent giveaways that I wanted to use -- for the last couple of weeks maybe, including today -- installation fails at the outset with a "failed to connect" message. I have retried repeatedly, checked my network connection and firewall, run as administrator, and done whatever else I could think of, to no avail. (I am using Windows 7 64-bit.) Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone have a solution? Any help would be appreciated.

In my experience, Aiseesoft products have been great, and was happy when I saw this "ultimate" version offered. I'm glad I read the comments here first, though. I won't be downloading this offering however because of the browser hijack (that's what I consider it when a program opens my browser without my permission).

Installed on 2GB Single Core AMD Netbook with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 without a problem.

Converted an FLV to an MP4 in a fraction of the time it took to do with a (much older) video converter. Even without the upgrade the system recommended based on the available hardware accelerator built into my netbook.

Cons:
Changed the resolution without asking.
Made the video no longer full-screen in "Full Screen" mode.
Annoying webpage popup.
Little "preview" screen's audio lagged and stuttered.
.
Pros:
Video still looked and sounded good.
.
Summery:
Nice program with a very few issues.
INCLUDING stupid pop-up webpage.
.

Normally this is a good program, but I am not having issues with the other version of the program so I don't see the need to upgrade this program with todays offering. However I DO HAVE A PROBLEM with programs that open up the browser when starting it. If it is not broken don't fix it, but at the same time I guess a guinea pig is needed to check to see what a program does or does not do so you can't completely avoid it. Thanks to the users here for pointing that out.

Giovanni : You have some great freeware alternatives. But you are often missing the mission of the Giveaway Of The Day site where they are offering FREE FULL VERSION SOFTWARE THAT OTHERWISE YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR. Some of these programs are often worth the price of paying for them, others may feel that the free software alternatives out there are too complicated. It's everyone's choice.

Sure a majority of these programs can't be updated , but.... For a lot of us we may be doing basic activities with the software that won't require an update so its ok for them.

I've found one set of files this- along with several other converters- can't play or convert. They play ok in Windows media player and DivX player, but not even in VLC player.

mp4 files, with Flash video (AVC, PAL) + AAC audio.
Saved from the BBC site.

Most converters/players show the length as 0. One converter converts, but claims over 2,000,000% progress. DVDVideosoft mp4 convertor has a crack at converting it, but almost 100% CPU use, so I stopped it before it was complete.

If anyone can suggest a convertor that may work with this.. thanks.

Jan 11 - Aiseesoft Total Media Converter Platinum v6.3.28
Feb 17 - Tipard Video Converter Platinum
Apr 1 - Leawo Video Converter v5.3
Apr 14 - Aiseesoft Media Converter Ultimate v6.3.56
May 3 - Tipard MKV Video Converter
May 23 - Aiseesoft MXF Converter
Jun 1 - WinX Mobile Video Converter 3.0
Jun 23 - Tipard Total Media Converter Standard 6.1.56
Jul 5 - Aiseesoft Video Converter Ultimate 6.3.6

9 video converters this year. I have no problem with video converters per se, because it's software that almost everyone uses, but when you are offering virtually the same product each time it gets old. If Aiseesoft and Tipard aren't the same company, then one needs to sue the other for stealing their software.

Please, GOTD, offer software that we haven't already seen.

The programs appear to be identical, yet they're listed on the Aiseesoft site at different prices.

Installed and registered with no problems on Win7 64 bit laptop.

I tried a sample conversion, and the list of output formats is mind-boggling, and I will probably never need most of them. I chose to convert a 1-hour AVI file to a WMV and it is impressively fast, taking just over 17 minutes as a background task while I worked on something else.

I will keep this one.

The browser launch is irritating, but I have the Block Site add-on so I just put Aiseesoft in the blocked site list which ensures that when the browser is already loaded in the background (as it usually is), nothing happens.

The many versions of Aiseesoft's Video/Media/DVD Converter Ultimate/Platinum are confusing, but it is a really good product with a lot of capability. I've used it many times for many different video/audio conversion and editing tasks, and it usually does the job. It's become one of the essential tools I put on any new system.

The one ongoing frustration I have with it is the lack of a "Keep original resolution" setting. I don't suppose that has changed?

As always Aiseesoft has released another great update, I have been using the previous version, While this did install as promised and did work as promised, I am giving this a thumbs down because of the constant Forcing me to go to there D**n webpage when I open the program. If I want to buy your products then I will. dont force me to go where I don't want to go to your webpage to get "deals". If it wasnt for that I would give you a Thumbs up. Now Understand this, I do believe in offering a deal once and letting people opt out of seeing it but your tactics are just annoying.

#2: "Does it remove DRM? If not there are a tone of free video convertors."

As a DVD Ripper it will likely handle some retail video DVD DRM -- mileage will vary since that DRM is constantly changing or evolving, so I don't think any software can claim to always handle everything. IOW it depends on the individual DVD & protections used. As far as on-line video DRM, no -- most apps that claim to beat that just re-record the video. And of course Aiseesoft has different products for Blu-Ray.

As far as the number of video converters available, yes, there are quite a few. Apps like today's GOTD, Aiseesoft's Video Converter Ultimate, use the ffmpeg code libraries, which include the x264 AVC/H.264 encoder that's used for most conversions targeting tablets & cells. I think most free &/or open source apps use the stand-alone x264 rather than what's included in ffmpeg. The main difference between today's Aiseesoft app & most of the free convertors then is the part of the software that reads the original video & then resizes it if or as necessary. Today's GOTD will *generally* do a better job accepting more types of video as input, & using QT-based code, will probably be faster. OTOH there are literally pages of settings that the x264 encoder can use, including much slower but higher quality encoding -- you normally can't access those except from the command line using x264 directly, or with a free app or front end that can pass all those settings to the encoder. An app like Video Converter Ultimate limits you to a relative few presets to keep thinks simple or less confusing.

One advantage [& disadvantage] of an app like Video Converter Ultimate is that it's pretty self-contained, sort of *walled off* from Windows, meaning that it doesn't effect the other video-related software you've installed, but neither can it make use of it. There are packages like ffdshow that allow decoding some video files using things like Intel's Quick Sync -- another is the LAVFilters -- & video apps that can use them may do their job more quickly because of that. OTOH apps like Format Factory install packages & apps for video processing in ways that may break your other video software. So it's a double-edged sword -- you can add stuff that improves video handling throughout Windows, but it can easily break everything too... or you can play it much safer with something like Video Converter Ultimate.

I generally don't talk about price because you're not asked to pay anything for the GOTD, but here it **might** be useful. Ignoring DRM, which you'll most always pay to remove unless it's done via a GOTD, it is possible to do everything else Video Converter Ultimate does for free, but you'll often pay back any money saved in time &/or effort, particularly if the free software you installed happened to break video handling on your system. That said, there is no alternative that I'm aware of for the speed [& quality] of Nero Recode when you're going DVD to standard frame sized AVC, plus Nero can embed switchable subs [subs you can turn on/off with the player, that aren't stored in separate files]. Nero's often on sale as cheap as $0 after MIR, but it isn't free. Likewise Sony Creative Software's Vegas [there are a few versions, like Nero starting at $0 after MIR] might have the fastest high quality AVC encoding for HD, particularly Blu-Ray compliant, & the included MainConcept DVD mpg2 encoder is hard to beat -- it's 2-3 classes above the mpg2 encoding in ffmpeg IMHO. SO long story short, with video transcoding or converting, free stuff is not always the best choice because one way or another you'll often [not always] wind up paying for it anyway, in time/effort &/or quality.

I agree that the browser pop is extremely annoying and would like to ask aiseesoft to next time... if they feel they must use a nagscreen (and common, they are in their full rights to do so) please use an inprogram nagscreen that doesn't open up my browser. I don't mind nag screens at all, it's a price I am willing to pay for free software but please think on how to present them. Might I suggest a pop up opening at closing the program with a simple text, link and perhaps image. Thats how most companys that use nagscreens do it. Still annoying not agrevating

for the rest this is a solid program if FF can't handle a file, this one can and vice verse, nagscreen is for me no reason to uninstall, just to use it as last resort ;)

As to the nasty habit of apllicatins opening Internet pages: according to my experience, solution is simple – just block the application from accessing internet in your firewall. This is what I always do in case of such applications and it has worked successfuly so far. I am not using a built-in Windows firewall, as I do not trust it, but an external software, so I do not know, whether MSW firewall will work the same way. I do not know, either, how about this GAOTD because I will not install it on my comp.

I picked this up in an earlier giveaway and have to say it's the best of the various DVD ripper/converters I have tried.
The Aiseesoft product is fast, configurable (all the presets can be tinkered with and saved to your own personal presets library) and has no issues with lip-sync. I have ripped more than 200 DVDs with this software and never had a problem.
The interface is familiar (if you've ever used WinX or Leawo etc) and it's more user-friendly than Handbrake. It has no DRM issues.
Make sure you disable the automatic updates feature in the preferences file to be certain the programme doesn't turn into crippleware in a few months' time.

I have five other Aiseesoft programs that I most likely got here on GAOTD. This is the ONLY one that opens my browser along with the program. It is very annoying! Not a keeper for that reason alone. If it's free, then it's free. Not free but with strings attached! Uninstalling.

I'm just in a process of converting 3 X 1.5 hour of MPEG2, converted VHS stuff I digitized today. The MPEG2 files are fine and A/V is in sync. Installed this GOTD on XPSP3 i5 PC.
90 min MPEG2 (with slight color tweak) to WMV took 86 minutes.
In the conversion I set for 48/128K audio, but got 48/256K in the WMV The file is in perfect sync as the source.
