Video Download Capture seems to be a somewhat confsing name as Downloading and Capturing are very different actions. But now that i think about it literally, it may mean, " to capture the video you have already downloaded" ? I was all excited when i saw todays givaway, thinking it was the software from applian technologies. As i read on .. magiccrpet (#24) states that it is from the same makers as Streaming Video Recorder given away on aug 18. That software was (IMO) written very poorly and just overall a poor effort by the developers. Using 40MB of RAM when Idle is insane , especially for a program working with videos that already are too taxing on cpu cycles. The only thing programs like this can do very well is shorten the life of your computer, again (IMO).

Thank you Ashraf for the review as always. One question i have, when i goto read the review, it says the site is not availible, but to read the review anyway, click here, which displays your review in a jpg image. Cool, but is that normal? Anyway, on the up side, I was turned on to auto-it from yesterday's giveaway comment page. I am Very ***** about that. :) ooops h a p p y is copyrighted it appears. Thanks again GOTD, and all those who make it happen.

and btw, not kid friendly? i think your kid would disagree when he can capture all the porn you download..

JUST KIDDING
Go Angels!

Did the software revert to Trial on its aniversary? If so than it was probably set to check for updates and when updated reverted to Trial.
Sorry for all the reverteds, its late here. I hope it helps.

Warning. DEP flagged this program. I would not use it.

DEP/NX is a feature of modern CPUs that allows marking of memory pages as Executable or non-Executable. This allows the CPU to help prevent execution of malicious data placed into memory by an attacker. If the CPU detects that it is about to jump to (begin execution of) data which is in a memory page which is not marked as Executable, the CPU will raise an exception which results in termination of the process.

Stated another way, if DEP/NX determines that if a potentially dangerous jump is about to be made, the process is intentionally “safely crashed” to prevent a potential security exploit

At the first attempt to activate the activate box just remained on screen. When I tried later, it seemed to work ( got activate successful message), but when I use the software I get a message advising that it's a trial version & amongst other limitations it won't convert an entire video.

Any ideas please?

ummmm... many boys will love some of the sites it's set up for, & their mothers would just as likely smack their dads for having it installed. ;?P

1 of the sites for example: pornfish dot com

I've got very mixed feelings about Video Download Capture. You need to input the URL of the video you want, & often determining the URL can be the hardest part. The video conversion is fast, even though it only uses 1 core in XP SP3 32 -- it showed 130 - 135 fps encoding to H264 -- but your choice of video size & format is pretty limited... other GOTD video conversion apps have had a much nicer (IMHO) setup for choosing device presets (iPod, Zune etc...). On top of that the program install is pretty intrusive, with 42+ MB in 73 files, 15 folders, plus its own cache in the Apowersoft folder under user appdata. It uses several common video filters, & registers every one with Windows, regardless what you already have -- this might break some other apps, cause problems after uninstall, & downgrade those filter versions from what you have installed. InstallWatch Pro records 408 added registry entries, with an additional 114 updated, those some of that is Windows registry caches. You have to edit the apps .ini file [in the mentioned app data folder] if you want to turn off auto updates -- after install it wanted to connect to a site with a non-English (Asian) URL. [probably nothing out of the ordinary, but not good in principle so I blocked it] Finally, I'm not sure about the content's of the program's folder -- 3 sub-folders & their content look like they might have been left over from compiling the code &/or should be in Windows system folders, though I'm uncertain whether that would or could effect anything else in Windows.

Beyond the more tech stuff, Video Download Capture comes set up for some on-line video sources that I'll just say aren't *family friendly*. Not judging anyone, that could be a big plus or minus for some folks.

Happy, thank you for your efforts to alert us to the WOT info. Unlike some, I didn't take your post as a snobbish I'm-smarter-than-you-are message, but as a genuine effort to make the rest of us aware of a possible threat. Please disregard those ingrates who denegrade your efforts. Many of us DO appreciate your posts!

It is not only important to know if software mentioned here is good or bad, but also if the site distributing it is possibly untrustworthy. Therefore, your posts are very relevant to these comments. My only recommendation is to be very careful of any alternative sites you post too since they might also be questionable.

#3: "This site [http://www.video-download-capture.com/], per the WOT Site has a very poor rating" [URL added]

McAfee SiteAdvisor does/has not found any problems. WOT also shows LOW confidence in the poor ratings it gives today's GOTD developer site.

Personally I prefer SiteAdvisor for 2 reasons:

1) From the WOT FAQ: "The reliability of the reputations improves as the system gathers more supporting evidence in the form of users’ ratings" Now user ratings matter, but only if there are enough of them, & only if the users doing the rating know what they're talking about. Many shopping sites have user reviews, where you can at least get some sort of an idea -- you probably wouldn't trust someone saying a regular vacuum cleaner's junk because it didn't work submerged in their swimming pool. WOT doesn't give you that kind of info, so you have no idea -- you have to trust them [WOT]. McAfee OTOH looks & tests for mal-ware related stuff, which is much more objective, leaving you to figure out if you like or don't like the site itself.

2) I'm not at all sure how WOT pays their bills -- they don't appear to be a non-profit, don't depend on donations etc... Their FAQ says they monitor users, but they also say they won't/don't violate your privacy. I have a pretty good idea about the motivation behind SiteAdvisor, i.e. to sell more software & subscriptions for McAfee. If McAfee does a poor job, it effects their bottom line. Personally I tend to trust that more.

On Aug 18, 2009, This same company gave away Streaming Video Recorder. I installed it on 3 computers and liked how it worked. Then out of nowhere, one by one, all three reverted to trial versions as the "Registred for Giveawayoftheday" disappeared. (Note the spelling of "registered"). I e-mailed them and they responded by saying that maybe I changed a setting. I e-mailed back assuring them I changed no setting and I didn't know what setting would undo the full version. They did not respond and I re-sent the e-mail only for it to fall on deaf ears. WOT had nothing good to say about them and I added my 2 cents. I did download this program and I'll use it but I'll be keeping an eye on this to see whether it reverts to trial as the other 3 did. I wonder ...anyone else install Video Streaming recorder from Apowersoft back in August 2009 and now finds the program a trial version?

To HAPPY PERSON:

Time for a reality check.
Think of it this way - none of us has a patent on the name we choose to use on this page. Someone is at liberty to use the nicknames 'Happy' or 'Person' if they wish. These may be names people have used before in other forums. There's no need to immediately assume this is a direct attack on you or that someon is stealing your 'honorable' name. The fact is you don't own the name.

A while back I saw a comment here signed by 'Jess', but I certainly hadn't written it. In fact the other Jess has every right to that name and I don't have exclusive rights to it, anymore than they do. In fact, the other Jess may have joined this forum much earlier than I did, and be an infrequent writer, as am I.

On forums you'll frequently see a surfeit of Mikes, Daves etc. In the end it sorts itself out when they decide to add another letter on the end and become MikeR, MikeS and so on.

Taking a high-horse 'I am exclusive' stand simply doesn't wash in the level-playing field of the web.

Also i try with audio file and result was:with:wma and wav i can preview in player and also cut this format;at rmvb it work only video like preview(audio don't work),at:mp3,ogg-don't work preview and cut(it say that fail(errors)or unsupported format.Ended all audio format was not created with this soft.Maybe if it was, maybe it work.Probably was something like high quality mp3 and ogg and don't recognize?i don't know.Ideea is that what you can preview in player, you can cut.For cut the format that is cutting must to be the same with format output.

In Oz, there has been a great commercial running on our TV, for over a year now.
It is about a small business that annually places an advert(Listing) in the Yellow Pages (Business telephone book). You have to get your add in early, or you miss out on being listed for a whole year.
The lady boss had delegated the responsibility for placing the listing, to a female employee (Jan). The boss opens up the fresh Yellow Pages, and notices that their add is not listed.
As the boss starts to mumble about it, the said employee quickly leaves the office, and scurries across the outside car park. The commercial finishes with the boss poking her head out of a narrow window, yelling 'Not happy Jan'
Could we use something similar here ? -
'Not happy John'

Don't you mean for the good of yourself?

If you really want people to stop stealing your identity, then you might like to tell them what it is!! Or are you really claiming an exclusive ownership to the word "happy" ?

Maybe the multi billion dollar, multi national company that OWNS Happy Meals might like to know about your un-lawful and utterly rediculous and idiotic claim to an exlusive use of the word "happy".

My name is John...and I demand that GOTD makes every other John stop using the name John, before every Tom, Dick and Harry gets upset.

Grow up fool...no, actually just go away!

The reason WOT gives a warning of the site's bad reputation seems based on the software's compatibility with adult themed websites.
There are no comments left on WOT that would suggest any other trustworthiness issues, which is not to say that there aren't any, but also not to say that there are.
For those who believe in the principle of innocent until proven guilty, then maybe the vendor is getting a worse reputation than he deserves, i.e. some holier-than-thou, goody-two-shoes on their morality high-horse gave him a bad privacy and reliability rating when the ONLY issue was child-friendliness?
Anyhow, I use the downloadhelper add-in to firefox and don't see the point in having this in addition.

Warning: I should have been clearer. During the install process, the alternative software VDownloader recommended by #4 happy person employs the sleazy opt OUT technique* of trying to install an unknown auction toolbar/icon on your desktop. Don’t know what it is, didn’t fall for it, unchecked that button (which is intentionally placed way at the bottom of the pop up window where you choose what to install). This sleazy stunt is also practiced by companies like Adobe and Piriform, to stick you with the Yahoo and Google toolbars… it should ALWAYS be opt IN, not opt OUT, imho.

Rather expensive for what it is, but it does have the ability to operate independent of Browsers. Mind you, Firefox has a number of free similar alternatives, but my favorite is the RealPlayer Downloader/Convertor plugin. It is Cross browser capable as well. 3/10
mainly due to cost.

This, like many other free alternatives, unfortunately fails to grab FLV videos from unknown sites. It's easy instead to grab from YouTube and other well known sites with free tools... In comparision Orbit Downloader is better at grabbing but it also fails with some web pages.

There are a very few progs, not free, able to grab everything. I happily use TubeHoarder from previous GOTD offer that 'till now never failed to recognize an FLV stream (sometimes you have to wait the video has been completely cached but it ALWAYS works at least).

In today's embedded flash video environment, it really is an advantage to have download support for RTMPE w/SWF verify - so that sites like cbs, hulu, and comedy central are supported. I can't drum up much interest for programs like Video Download Capture that just support simple flash downloading.

Good morning all,

WARNING - This site, per the WOT Site has a very poor rating in all categories, as follows:

1. Trustworthiness: 7
2. Vendor Reliability: 2
3. Privacy: 2
4. Child Safety: 2

I am simply reporting what WOT says (and WOT is a very reliable site that determines these types of matters, as some of you may know. For this reason, I recommend staying away from today's GiveAway.

An excellent 100% freeware alternative is:

The Good
* Can download videos from multiple different video hosting websites, including the most popular ones.
* Allows you to download videos of "high quality"/"high definition" (when applicable).
* Has a built in YouTube, MetaCafe, and Break search engine.
* Browser independent.
* Can convert FLV videos to various other formats.
* Can do basic video edits.

The Bad
* Not very, uh, "kid friendly".
* No automatic detection; you must manually type/paste in URL of video you want to download.
* Can search YouTube, MetaCafe, and Break but can only preview YouTube videos.
* Fairly RAM intensive.

Free Alternatives
WebVideoCap/VideoCacheView
Tubemaster++
