1. Dvd Decrypter - though no longer produced for free - is readily available for download all over the web [http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/] and in conjunction with the free Format Factory and DVD Shrink, are all most would ever need to rip, copy and convert and DVDs.

2. Yes, if you search his sentence verbatim you will find your way back to this page - it's not magic. However, using keywords like: rip, free, dvd - you will find a plethora of useful information instead.

3. While naming oneself "____ fan" could be considered an opinion, calling said person "daft" (–adjective, -er, -est. 1.senseless, stupid, or foolish) completely unprovoked is another story, and setting them straight - whether i agree with them or not (I'm no M.M. fan) - is both fair and fun - though it may lack your personal brand of smarmy, self-righteousness.

PS. Your CDs have now officially been cursed.

I liked the software but did have 2 problems with the software itself. Problem 1. When the transfer of the movie to zune format took place it ran at the same time as if the movie were running and one of the movies I tried it ran so slow one second took a half hour to transfer. When doing the movie in I-pod format it went it took 15 minutes to transfer the same movie. Also It would not show up in my Zune or I- tunes software as movies? Why? Problem 2. When done with my transfers I could not get the software to stop or shut off. I had to CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up my task manager to get it to shut down. In all though it did do what was designed to do. The movies played in zune, i-tunes,wmp, and wmc. I have yet to try the on my PS3, xbox, psp,or other media devices, but will and will let you know how they worked.

I am new to GOTD but have gotten two wonderful programs so far. I have recomended you to my church, a couple of non- profit orginazations, friends, family, and online hooligans (lol). I hope this will serve to support your site in the future and thank you for your help in finding these wonderful programs that I would not have even thought of purchacing if it was not for your site letting me test drive them first. Everyone hates a used car salesman and ther are alot of those on the net. Thanx GOTD.

I use DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and RipIt4Me (all freeware). Those who've tried this, what benefits might this give me over what I currently use? I only use rippers to copy my own dvds/cds and media onto CD/DVD, however if something can do it better than what I have (and easier) I'd be willing to take a chance...however if anyone is having problems, then I wouldn't want to lol. Any thoughts?

I thought I has a winner,... Installed to Vista 64 and took the disk, no problem. Many conversion tests and crashes later... I will be taking it off. Specifically for PSP, the only format that my PSP could read was the one converted to MPEG-4 320x240. My PSP could not read any other "PSP" conversion. And, since the 320x240 is not even full native resolution, I am not impress.

I will have to look for another program :-(

"lExtra CD Ripper - Couldnt find any CD-ROM drives.
You might need an external ASPI manager (like wnaspi32.dll). See the documentation for more details."

DVD player is present and opens a DVD and plays it.
XP Service Pack 3.
wnaspi32.dll is present in windows system32 folder.
Not very useful @ this point.
Maybe tomorrow.

I tried it in a VMware virtual machine running Win 7 on Mac OS X. It did not work properly. You can use Videora to convert for Apple products. There is both a windows and Mac version.

Videora, the windows version works perfectly in VMware PC Win 7 as a guest window on the Mac OS X.

Videora loads the output automatically into iTunes so you can sync to your iPod or iPhone.

IMHO - thumbs down. Videora is FREE!

#27: "1. This app is problematic and superfluous – use DVD-Decrypter (or FF like #10 said) or just rip your damn cds."

Problematic, yes, otherwise, respectfully, no... DVD Decrypter hasn't been in development for years, Format Factory is not a ripper, & my CDs haven't been cursed, thank you very much ;-)

"3. #18 needs a Google search in his browser. "

Actually a trip to videohelp.com &/or doom9.org would be more useful. Google on the question & the 2nd hit *is* his question on this page! :-)

"4. Perhaps we’ll have to find someone more in league with #25’s political views to recommend software for her ... Keep your dimwitted political views to yourself"

No offense to MichaelMooreFan, that is the name used, & is a political statement of sorts. Blasting Dae because she doesn't like Moore is a political statement too. So your view is not all political statements are bad -- just those you disagree with. That's not only unfair, but certainly can't be much fun.

#32: "My only objection is that I can’t find a way to customize the dimensions. The aspect ratio should have been 1.85, but the closest I could find was 720×480 (1.5)."

You have to add black bars, letter or pillar boxing -- to do a 320 x 240 frame (same aspect as 720 x 480) I had to select the 2nd option, Keep Orig., to achieve this. If your player doesn't take a full 4:3 frame (if it has a wide aspect), you'll have to make do or use something else, *IF* the player doesn't automatically cut off the letter boxing.

Extra Cd DVD Ripper is one way to convert DVD content to video files you can play using portable players etc.

Alternatives / Tips / Tricks:
Sites like videohelp.com & doom9.org offer a wealth of tools & know-how to do almost anything... well anything anybody could think of to do with DVDs. A lot of the software developed however performs only 1 or 2 tasks, meaning you'd have to do several steps, one after the other. More convenient if you want to start a conversion & walk away, several *front ends* have been developed that take your content, process it using one app, then process the output in another, & another, &... That's how Format Factory, popular here among many GOTD regulars, works. Their downside? Because a lot of the individual free tools are used by so many apps, there's often overlap. If 2 programs each use another software tool, Windows can become confused about which copy to use. This can lead to conflicts and software breaking.

The easiest solution is find one so-called front end, & stick with it, removing everything else that might cause a problem. Another is to stick with more self-contained solutions -- apps that keep everything they need in their program folders, & don't tell Windows about it (i.e. they don't register these files with Windows). With the exception of the older, Xvid codec included, Extra Cd DVD Ripper belongs in that 2nd category. Format Factory belongs in the 1st -- it doesn't always play well with others.

If you have one of the portable players listed in Extra's DVD Ripper profiles you shouldn't have much of a problem getting your video from your PC to the player. You also paid more (often a lot more). There are tons of cheaper players available, & tons of cheaper people who've bought one... like me. There are also loads of folks who've paid more for a cheaper player -- sorry. Either way, if your device isn't listed in the common profiles found in apps like Extra's, that doesn't mean you can't use it. If you're lucky it just means finding the specs for files your player will accept, & setting those in the DVD Ripper app manually. If you're not so lucky, you probably need to use a special conversion program partially developed by the people who made your player -- partially because they normally stop their software development just as soon as they've incorporated the maximum number of bugs. :-(

In those cases the best (often only) approach is to learn AviSynth &/or VirtualDub to as necessary: trim, crop, size, rotate, & save your audio & video to an intermediate format, like the free HUFFYUV or Lagarith, or the non-free Picvideo mjpg codec. Then import these files into the necessary tool, like the very common AMVConverter. Note that there are often several versions of whatever proprietary converters you can find on-line -- you might have to try 2 or 3 before finding the one that works best with your device, & alas, it often isn't the version that came in the box. Using VirtualDub &/or AviSynth is also a route to higher quality, even if/when you have a portable player with profiles in popular conversion apps. Swiss Army Knife type tools are convenient, but as a rule never work quite as well the individual tools they package.

Downloaded, installed and registered fine. However, when I tried twice to convert dvd to avi, it froze each time and failed. I then downloaded and tried Handbrake mentioned above (#4,14) and it worked perfectly and efficiently. I'm sticking with Handbrake.

XP Home SP3

I ripped a 94-minute commercial DVD as a test - ripping time and running time seemed much the same, although I wasn't watching closely. With a 1028kbs specified bitrate, the result was a 800MB file which looks fine other than aspect ratio.

My only objection is that I can't find a way to customize the dimensions. The aspect ratio should have been 1.85, but the closest I could find was 720x480 (1.5). (My standalone player can't handle more than 720.)

#16: "windows by default can rip music off of cds. not sure about dvds."

Not if they're commercial releases, because those usually have DRM plus various tricks used to make copying difficult. The Media Centers (either XP Media Center or built-in to versions of Vista & 7) will let you work with some non-DRM DVDs.

* * *

#18: "Does this program rip commercial DVDs and copy them? I’d like to make backups of certain DVDs I own. Will this do it?"

In a word, No. :-(
It will record a copy of the video files (make while the video's playing), but it will not copy the structure, or output full-size mpg2, DVD video.

A *Ripper* (for example DVDFab) grabs the original content off a disc -- Extra CD DVD Ripper records the playing video. That isn't a *bad* strategy, but this version of Extra's DVD Ripper doesn't do it well... It's slow, performing only slightly better than real-time encoding to 320 x 240 AVC (an hour of video will take almost an hour), the encoded file is realtively poor quality, the program is awkward the way it works, & to top it off it's buggy (it locked several times & I had to use Task Mgr to close it). I wouldn't recomend it.

Extra CD DVD Ripper takes up ~38 MB in 133 files, 7 folders. It uses the very common free-ware: ffmpg, Lame, Xvid, & open source versions of Real. As usual, Lame & Xvid are older versions -- Xvid for example was updated (including bug fixes) 6/7/09. The Real & ffmpg code are probably not the newest either, but updating those would require more than downloading the newer versions & pasting in place, so I cut developers a bit of slack far as those 2 are concerned. Extra CD DVD Ripper's registry entries are really minimal, & Portable App Creator [from the forums @ portableapps.com] should make it completely portable.

Firing up Extra DVD Ripper Express 4.54 [what it shows on the app's Title Bar] brings up a nice looking GUI, which (as usual) you can't re-size. You won't go hunting for a place to copy/paste the GOTD key, with the Register menu button clearly visible on the Menu Bar -- once you do however, there's no change in appearance or anything to say you now have a registered version. There's a band of icons running horizontally, & the 1st thing you need to do is click one to select your output format -- tooltips make it easy. You can do the same thing clicking on the Setting menu button. Below that icon bar is a drop down menu called "Output Profile" -- 2nd step is to pick the profile that matches what you want [for example there's 20 profiles for the Zune, with different bit rates etc], and at the very top of the list is: "Customize Output Setting", activating the right 1/3 of the program window where you can set things yourself. 3rd, click the Browse button (between the icon bar & Output Profile) & navigate to where you want your new file(s).

Now it's time to load a DVD, which is easiest using the Convert Now menu button -- you can also hit the "Load..." button next to the play controls, but visually it's maybe a bit harder to spot. In the small window that pops up, you tell the app where your DVD is. This brings up another window with 3 drop down menus: Aspect Ratio -- Keep Original will letterbox a 16:9 video in a 4:3 frame like 320 x 240, DVD Audio Track -- which available sound track to use, & DVD Subtitle -- whether you want subs *permanently* added, & which track to use. Below those drop downs you can select in/out points [i.e. when to start & stop], but you have to know the times all ready because there's no preview window here. Finally, click OK & you're on your way.

There are other features, like you should be able to stop & pause & change profiles, but for me [in XP Pro SP3 32] pretty much anything but the exact steps I've laid out above caused the program to lock 1 time or another, & in fact the developers' site lays out much the same steps. It's not hard to shut the program off using Task Mgr, so feel free to check it out more thoroughly than I have. ;-)

This morning has been a learning experience, I’ve discovered that:
1. This app is problematic and superfluous – use DVD-Decrypter (or FF like #10 said) or just rip your damn cds. Not everything needs another app.
2. Austin (#16-17) is right; send more pdf/avi/dvd converters! (please no not do this).
3. #18 needs a Google search in his browser.
4. Perhaps we’ll have to find someone more in league with #25’s political views to recommend software for her – perhaps she’d entrust herself enough to ORiellyFan or CoulterDevotee to test drive an application or two.
Keep your dimwitted political views to yourself – and don’t quit your “Dae” job.

XP Pro SP3 - I've used version 6.4 of this program to convert my dvds of tv shows to avi files to watch on the bus to work. It is simple to use and works very fast. The video and audio sound synch is very good (this seems to be a problem with some programs like the ones from APlus). The quality is good enough for my purposes, to view shows on the go.

Two thumbs up for this software from me. Thank you very much, GAOTD.

ACTUAL USAGE: I will provide more feedback as soon as I am able to do some conversions. However, based on the previous June 1, 2009 GiveAway, "Extra DVD Video Converter v6.48", I expect this program to produce similar top-notch, hiqh-quality audio/video output.

PERCEIVED DRAWBACKS: None as far as I can tell thus far.

SUGGESTION TO DEVELOPER: Please add full-featured Help Menu within the program itself, to supplement the online guidance.

SUMMARY: A definite two-thumbs-up for today's GiveAway. Thanks much, GOTD and Extra, for sharing this terrific program with us.
