I wasn't going to bother to comment but most of the comments are just silly, as on most security product giveaways. As to the endless nonsense about an unknown startup deserving attention, that's just the thing, this isn't a new product, and the complete lack of reviews by any major review sites indicates it should be avoided. Then there's the same plagiarized, useless, half-decade old review as last time. #41, prober, that's the review linked by the developer. Read it more carefully. Safe'n'Sec has an enormous false-positive rate, only Emsi products are worse, basically flagging everything as malware (some people here will think that's great, "Oh, look at how much malware it detects!"). Anti-Malware Test Lab is crap, and it should be immediately obvious to you that it's crap. AV-Comparatives tests relatively few products. Virus Bulletin has their own VB100 test (you'll need to create a free account). The Matousec Proactive Security Challenge is primarily leak tests. Frankly, I'm getting annoyed with Matousec. Vista is a completely different security environment from XP, all of the security products had to be completely rewritten for it, but they don't test on Vista. Yet again, they just published a new review of Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro 2009 using an old version (the current version has an updated antivirus engine, among other things). I think Wilder's is mostly crap.

I'm not going to get into the endless issues regarding testing security products. While signatures are nice if they positively identify malware without false-positives (the VB100 awards require 100% detection of all in-the-wild viruses with zero false-positives), the other features of a security suite will still catch other malware, but you do have to be able to interpret the security prompts. #87, #92, Damian Spooner, according to your test, Safe'n'Sec detected 301 out of 500 malware samples, and Kaspersky detected 460. Agnitum Outpost Security Suite detected 491 (the other 9 should be detected by the other security mechanisms when they are installed/executed).

Multiple realtime scanners of the same type nearly always interfere with each other. You can't exclude them from each other, that only excludes folders, the problem is the way that they hook into each other. Conflicts may not be at all obvious, and either generate false positives or compromise your security, or both.

I just have to comment that the major "commercial" AV appz are the very ones that a malitious programmer is trying to defeat. If the world of business uses, say, Norton... then to do the most damage and make a name for my virus I will work very hard to get past the main manufacturers, but a less used application is safer. This is why there are much less virus programs written to damage Mac's OS. If the worlds financial institutions are using Windows, then by attacking other opperating systems is far less damaging. The other fact I must mention is that the programs written and maintained by those in Europe are privy to a new virus as they have already concluded their day of business before we in America have even had our morning coffee, meaning that they have a chance to come up with new virus definitions that fit the new attacking program and send a fix before we even are on the internet checking our morning email.

I use Avast or AVG on my machines and am very happy with the results compared to Norton. I had several attacks that shut Norton down and the free applications have served me better. I will refrain from comment on Safe and Secure as I have not had a chance to test it at this time. NO RATING FROM ME!

What does this mean? If it can be installed on sp3 xp or vista sp1, what is the purpose of this weird warning message

I decided to try this on my eee 1000HE running XP Home sp3. No problem with installation or activation. 32 minutes to scan my system using automatic setup, and so far the program has blocked no processes or even popped up any warnings on known bad sites; it does pop up a notification about every file being accessed during a program installation, but the popups are completely useless since they have no options. Seems the learning mode simply watches what you are doing and learns to let you do it.

The antivirus leaves very much to be desired - very bare bones, no context menu scan and no information, contrary to what is noted in the help file. After setting what should have been the default settings in the scan module, I chose to scan system memory, boot sectors and one file that I know is always detected as a false positive in other av programs. Safe 'n Sec detected a hidden process and the one false positive file, but I could get no information from the program as to what the hidden process was or what the detected virus was, so Safe 'n Sec is now learning all about the recycle bin.

I just tried to install this safe n sec 2009 and zemanna antilogger popped up a warning saying this software was trying to install a keylogger.

I have installed a lot of antivirus products on this machine and zemanna has never warned about any of them installing a keylogger. Please be careful!

I’m also an IT professional and using free AVG antivirus (http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition) for past 3 years and never had any problems with virus or spywares. That does not mean AVG is the best antivirus available in free market, but it does effectively what it claims. Occasionally I also run Bit Defender free online scanner (http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html) to double check there are no viruses or spyware missed out by AVG.

One of the best ways to prevent virus infection is to disable Auto Run feature when removable storage devices are connected. Please refer to this article from Microsoft for disabling Auto Run feature (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715).

The setup is a very lengthy process and is a complete hog, although I can't see why. I have temporarily uninstalled Avast! Antivirus to test this. If this includes a firewall, that means I should disable Windows Firewall and Windows Defender? Its not very clear what the software actually does, considering the Antivirus is the widely trusted Dr. WEB, what on earth does the actual Safe 'n' Sec do?

I installed this figuring it would be a decent secondary frontline for detection. It took quite awhile to set up a 'profile', which I didn't want, and it wiped out my browsing history along with changing my homepage to MSN. The toolbars I had set in place are also gone, and now it's going to take me forever to reverse things and recover my history listing if that's even possible. If I'd known the program would destroy important info to me, I would have totally passed. I'm just glad I stopped the install on my older slow machine before it wiped out it's history too.

Just becuase it not well known does does not mean that is no good.

Hi folks!!

This program got “GOOD” ratings on many reliable websites such as SOFTPEDIA, so it’s not CRAP as somebody said above (and as far as I’m concerned 63% THUMBS DOWN for this software is pretty ludricrous!!).

Having said that, I usually prefer stand-alone antivirus, antispyware, and firewall products (as long as they are FREE of course…LOL!) rather than all in one solution security suites such as this GAOTD.

So, unless we are talking about top level (and expensive) security suites such as NORTON, BITDEFENDER, PANDA, AVIRA, KASPERSKY or ZONE ALARM, my suggestion is to install stand-alone security products (preferably FREE of course!!), since opting for three or more separate security applications lets us pick the best of breed in each category.

Below are the BEST FREEWARE PROGRAMS of my knowledge which can guarantee a GREAT PROTECTION of our system FOR FREE:

Firewall: ONLINE ARMOR (alternatives: COMODO, OUTPOST or ZONE ALARM)

Antivirus : AVIRA 9 (alternatives: AVAST or AVG)

Antispyware on demand scanner: A-Squared 4.5 + ADVANCED SYSTEM PROTECTOR Free edition

Preemptive Spyware Prevention: SPYWARE BLASTER

Antirootkit on demand: GMER (or alternatively PANDA ANTIROOTKIT and/or ROOTKIT REVELAER)

Antikeylogger to add on AVIRA 9: SAFESPACE + KEY SCRAMBLER, a revolutionary plug-in Web browser which encrypts your keystrokes so that if a keylogger picks it up it has no idea what the keystrokes are….how cool is that?? LOL!!

Antiphishing applications: MCAFEE SITE ADVISOR + NETCRAFT TOOLBAR + LINK EXTEND (for FIREFOX USERS only)

HIPS (optional): THREATFIRE, WIN PATROL, PROCESSGUARD Free, WINPATROL, SAMURAI (very good program despite being pretty unknown: http://turbotramp.fre3.com/), COMODO BOCLEAN (excellent hacker proof software: http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html), AROVAX SHIELD, GeSWall (or SANDBOXIE)

Please note that since the new AVIRA AntiVir 9 is now able to detect in real time even spyware and adware, antispyware real-time applications such as this GAOTD or THREATFIRE, SPYWARE TERMINATOR are no longer necessary…LOL!!!

As far as KEY SCRAMBLER is concerned, according to its developer, this program defeats KEYLOGGERS (YES, you heard me right guys!! LOL!!) by encrypting your keystrokes at the keyboard driver level, but the best part of this program is that, when the encrypted keystrokes reach your browser, KEY SCRAMBLER decrypts them so that you and no one else can see exactly the keys you’ve typed.

In fact, as everybody knows (or at least should know…LOL!!), when we type on our keyboard, the keys travel along a path within the OS before arriving at our browser, with the tragic consequence that Keyloggers plant themselves along this path observing and recording everything we type, allowing CRIMINALS to get access on sensitive data such as passwords, credit card or bank account number that they usually use to steal money from the bank account of their (often unaware) victims.

Now, thanks to KEY SCRAMBLER, Keyloggers can only record the encrypted keystrokes, meaning that any intruder (hacker, lamer or cracker) will never be able to read what you type on your keyboard as encrypted keystrokes are completely indecipherable to them!!!

How cool is that?? LOL!!

Of course, it's well known that any security program is far from perfect and it’s likely that sooner or later there will be a KEYLOGGER that will defeat KEY SCRAMBLER, but since this has not occured till now, KEY SCRAMBLER is a MUST HAVE application that everybody should have installed on their browser as extra protection against keyloggers.

You can download the FREE VERSION of this LITTLE GEM here:

http://www.qfxsoftware.com/Download.htm

Finally, to make sure you don’t suffer from a dangerous OUTDATED security application, whose failed update can cause a serious security risk on your system, there is a nice desktop application called “SECUNIA PSI” which is in my humble view the most useful and important free application everybody should run on their machine as it checks in depth your PC for insecure programs exposing you to security threats showing you the latest security (FREE) updates and patches available for download from the program vendors themselves!

Hope you found my comment interesting and informative.

Enjoy!!

Cheers from Italy!

Giovanni

I found these posts from the FAQ section of safe'n'secure helpful and thought I would post them here:

Does Safe'n'Sec replace traditional protection solutions: antiviruses and personal firewalls?

Safe'n'Sec is an additional protection tool, which is used in combination with antivirus software and personal firewalls. A combination of these solutions effectively combats zero-day viruses and protects against new intrusions.

There is an opportunity to purchase Safe'n'Sec with antivirus databases provided by well-known antivirus vendors. However, these antivirus databases are used to perform scans of your computer or selected files for malware and to delete or quarantine the malicious file. Safe'n'Sec does not provide a capability for curing infected objects, nor does the antivirus module provide realtime antivirus protection, it is a demand scanning module only.

A quick comment to my post #80 is if yoiua are looking for a great anti virus check out Eset Nod 32 antivirus programs they seem to be one of the best in my eyes and take very very little resources to run unlike many of the big names like Norton, Macfee and others and thats what you want is something that uses very little resources.
I have been using Eset for many years and it would take a lot for me to change.

Hi All, I think I will stick with Eset Nod 32 Business edtion it works great and has caught many thing trying to get into my puter.
I would like to say I back #8 100 % on his comment never put two antivirus programs one the same puter it will cause a lot off trouble and conflict and chances are you won't be very well protected.
I am a puter tech so I do know what I am talking about. And as far as this software I think I would keep my old antivirus if it is working and see what the results and comments are made on this software and if it is good I can assure you it will be offered here again in the near future!
Have a great day all!!!

#76 You've had Kapersky 2009 since 2005? Who do you know in the industry that the rest of us don't? I ran Kapersky against Avast and Avast put it to shame. No let me take that back, Avast totally ran it into the ground. You should try it since you've only been using Kapersky since 2005 and you'll see the difference. A lot of the big names have backed off with development and searches only to run on their name not their quality. I once praised Norton but wouldn't recommend it to any one today. To say Kapersky's better than Norton and Mcaffe is the truth, but the best out there, I don't think so.

Warning!

Okay, so I decided to test this. Downloaded and activated fine on my XP SP2 1.6 Intel Centrino Mobile w/512mb RAM.

Installation took about 1 minute but Safe`n`Sec 2009 + Antivirus Dr. WEB took an additional 40 minutes scanning my system and setting itself up.

I found and downloaded an encrypted rar (a compressed archive) that contained 500 trojans/malware/virus/adware, etc. and extracted the malware executables to a folder on my desktop.

I directed the Safe`n`Sec 2009 + Antivirus Dr. WEB to scan that folder and it only recognised 301 as dangerous! That's right 199 just left sitting there like they were nothing! So basically we're looking at a lousy 60% detection and removal.

So I then recovered my system and ran the same test using Kaspersky Internet Security 7

Out of the 500 baddies Kaspersky Internet Security 7 only missed 40. So that's a detection rate of 92%

Hmm - looks like I'll stick with Kaspersky and the odd online scan at one of the many now available.

I hope this gives anyone considering replacing their current security solution with this one second thoughts.

I can't recommend this software.

Thanks GAOTD,
Regards,
Damian

This should clear up as to whether or not the "real" DrWeb Antivirus is used with Safe n Secure. I'm still not 100% sure if it runs in RealTime, but according to the Safe n Secure website, where it states "Built-in antivirus scanner maximizes safety level on your PC" under Why Safe`n`Sec®? The key advantages of Safe`n`Sec® 2009 personal products, it makes me think is only "On Demand."

I have Installed this on my spare computer and all seems well,no slow-down as yet,but have not re-booted yet as It Is In the middle of a scan.Everything still working as It should,Firefox Is working with no problems.Seems very easy to use and light on resources,as I said this Is my spare computer and It only boosts 1300mhz with 512mb ram with most of that taken by xp.I was running Avira with online armour and threatfire and I only had about 87mb ram left with all that running, now I have 181mb left with this running,so up to now I am happy,of course only time can tell If It does Its job properly or not but seems to be for now and very efficently as well. Thanks very much again GAOTD for another fine offer.
To #57 and #63 I totally agree with you and I cant understand why a good program like this would get that amount of thumbs down unless most people have not tried It for themselves.

re: #1
This software is from one of first (in the world) Russian anti-spyware teams. Its history pre-dates many of the companies you mention. Unlike the ones like Norton, no reported security holes have been found in their products. Many of the superior hackers come from Russia, so they are in the thick of it. Also, it is well known the majority of US and UK IT professionals are nowhere near the expertise of the foreign (RU, DE, RO, CN, JP, KR) superhackers. Even the FBI admits they are not in the same league. So, before you foster innuendo about "unknown" companies make sure you investigate their "3rd tier status" and give demonstrative facts before assuming inferiority.

As one might imagine, a Russian group doesn't get the press capitalist companies like Norton pay for. (I used Norton in the past and found it less than the competition. I no long do/will use it.) Generally, I stay away from so-called industry leader software, especially in security. The superhackers are looking to get into places protected by Norton and MacFee (large US companies, US gov, banks), less so with, for example, Avira. To get to where the big money is, as it were, hackers attack the leaders because more is protected by them. Who'd spend time with a Rus company with 300-600,000 users? Think about it.
Most of the world is not as perceived... ergo, think!

#1 This is not a time for using anti-viruses like Norton -> they're so slow and sometimes uncontrollable, that I don't reccomend using a security suite like Norton or McAfee. And besides, why should you use a Moses' times anti-virus? xD No, no, no! Use a real security suite people! Anything from Comodo, ESET, and AVG should do. I have used tens of anti-viruses, and I don't like those ameteur-styled like Norton which have already programmed settings that you can't change.

Also, Dr. Web is a cery good anti-virus in case that your computer is bootable, but your installed anti-virus is corrupted/infected/ect.

No harm trying this,i prefer this than Norton or Zonealarm which lags & freeze ur whole computer when u pay huge bucks 4 it.after all,dun go for big names or famous brands, they may not be the best.Best-selling AV products have shown that they are nt as effective in detecting worms as compared to those free ones. Therefore should give this a try.

I have no issue with this developer being an unknown, however I have only seen them at this location which makes me a bit warry. My real issue is with how the sweet operates. It examines code as it executes. In my experience this is not a good thing, because if a sring of code makes it onto your system some of the resources of your system are used to combat the infection. This with a good software and hardware firewall would be good, but then what about portforwarding. Use a good free anti-virus (norton and Macafee let just a few thru to make more money) and practice safe net activity. Also make sure your ISP point has all the proper firewalls in place. This code execution deal is not the answer I am looking for.

they could have an agreement

The more so as even the king of all burning apps, Nero Burning ROM, is said to have had such an agreement about three years ago.

Apparently (I don't know from my own experience) there was a checkbox in Nero 6 where you could activate a virus check of the data before burning. That check was performed by ... Dr.Web!

I use http://www.av-comparatives.org/ for anti-virus reviews and this product is not listed. As the antivirus is your second line of defense, the end user is the first, I will stick with one of the well known and tested antiviruses.

Hi Folks,

On the other two url's from #58, I would also take the NextAdvisor recommendations with a grain of salt (see the post about making money selling what they are reviewing) however I don't see anything scam or malicious so you might read for fun. And while the FirewallGuide site does sell products or have sales affiliations the quality of info looks quite high with links to good articles about freeware (e.g. Gizmo).

The only disaster link is the one I mention above, although not in the sense of "exploits", the review tries to convince you to buy a scam product. There is a lot of that on the web, and WOT (Web of Trust) is among the first to mark them, way ahead of McAfee. (The Firefox extension is free, maybe IE as well.)

Shalom,
Steven Avery

Hi Folks,

Caution!

#58 has two valid links but he also has.
" 1. 2009securitysoftwarereviews.net "

This leads to a bogus review page where #1 is a scam product "PC Security Shield" discussed at Web of Trust :

Hi Folks,

A good rule of thumb is don't give weight to "reviews" from individuals or web sites that are selling some of the software products at the same time. Clearly they won't want to speak highly about products on which they don't make $$$, including freeware.

We have two or three such sites above, the worst here (again and again) is the "Well-Oiled PC" and what looks like his multi-names on GAOTD (e.g. #1 sounds like him). Sounds like a little kid making some extra $$$ shilling Norton and a bit more. (btw, Norton isn't as bad today as it has been for years). Well-Oiled comments are nothing of substance, just a kid trying to make some allowance money, trying to be a FUD-meister.

The criticism of Wilders above .. actually you will find plenty of PrevX criticism at Wilders. (I installed it and am undecided, but the profile is light.) Wilder's is one of the best "open forums" for security products, discussion 100 products and more, the biggest problem is sometimes they think too tech, not so much for the home user or even the biz user. There also is Gladiator and some others, CastleCops tho is no more (long story).

Safe 'N Sec I would pass on, doesn't have a mix on my table anyway with Online Armor and Avira and a bit more, would just be in the way.

If someone could definitively find out if there is more than one Dr. Web, that would help. Either Safe 'N Sec is including a good product or they are plying deception, a researcher should be able to figger this out.

Shalom,
Steven Avery

Installs, works fine on Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. Smooth and easy. Let's see what it can do, but Dr. Web alone is worth having.

This vendor offers 3 levels of programs. Safe n Secure 2009 Personal (which was offered here before), todays offering, and Safe n Secure 2009 Deluxe. In all 3 cases the demo file you download from the site is the same file. The difference is what key you enter. Also the license is good for 1 year. After that the program will still function but with no further updates provided. Thank you GAOTD for your efforts and thank you to the vendor, S.N. Safe&Software for the offers.
