Three Appendages Up for VisionSuite! I'm even going to pay 'em!

Another commenter noted that this kind of utility is all over the place. Yes, true, and good on the maintainers for publishing contrary views. My own 10 minute experience is it's great and I don't have to fumble with all those bloody settings from, say, nVidia! So I like it very much. Here's why...

My current client just shoved a very expensive laptop down my throat. If money was gonorrhoea, these guys would be a petri dish at your local health office! But in fact this US$4500 laptop sucks, with all it's Vista 'er, 'ah, "stuff" and 17" monitor shinier than the hood of a brand new Bentley. Hell, I'd be more comfortable with an old DEC VT100 monitor (one of which I still own, BTW)!!! I usually work from home, a modest sized Nord sailing cruiser with wonderful lighting, presently inhabited and cared-for I pray by a sweet young thing from southern California. Sad for me they want me on site and are willing to pay quite a bit for it.

This bunch use cheap, over-bright florescent lamps in what seems like every 3 feet! Add to that the office (I should say ZOO) is filled with a very few very good local developers worthy of the title, a project manager who can not find her rather cute ass with four hands, a map, PERT-Chart and torch. Nothing new there, though Brit/Ausie/NZ're are usually far better PM's than in The States. Oh well.

Much, much worse are what seems like 100's of 23-year old freshly minted MBA (US)/MSc (GB) types. They line up at my cube, and thank gods at other developers cubes like jets inbound to Heathrow, Frankfurt or Loz-Angeles spaced 5 minutes apart at dusk, so many fireflies strung across the sky. Each has something terribly important, brilliant, funny, witty, to say/ask/bestow upon TheOldSageOne (hay, everyone has to market himself). Try as I might, focus is lost every bloody time.

Combined with the bad lighting, it's all bringing back to me why I quit writing code for a living in 2001... precisely the same thing. Took a nice job teaching snivelling brats of New England's Good and Great - even had a Bush several hashes removed. The work was refreshing but pay packet was heartbreaking. Besides, New England is ball-up cold in winter; I missed my usual 3 months in Thailand (north or south, depending mood and season) for rest, renewal, and cultural exchange.

So there it is. This little video focus tool not only keeps me, well, focused and able to cope with the Bentley-On-Glass monitor attached to an overpriced huge laptop, it enables me to put up with the interruptions whilst re- re- re-finding the terminal focus quickly. More, this little memoir gave me an excuse to leave my little bit of hell for a moment; praise to whomever developed a lovely little tool, VisionSuite, who ever that might be, hopefully entertain the reader, and ... resist the temptation to knock out some of these lights and batter one of the new graduates into the mass of uneducated protoplasm from which he sprang!! Thanks for the moment. -TheOldCodeToad

The application works like it should. But it'd be great if I could use the middle mouse button to enable/disable the lens.

Thanks for the program. Regretfully I could not get it to accept the key.txt file (yes I used the setup.exe from the zip file). All I get is an error that the key is invalid. I tried with the one from here and the manufactures site, and had the same result with both (yes I used the one from here first and uninstalled before trying the other).

I tried it in trial mode on both Vista Ultimate X86 and XP Pro X86. The software looks nice, and can be useful. Regretfully, the key.txt file was simply not accepted on two different computers with two different Windows installations....

I do allot of graphics editing, and would have liked to have been able to use this application in more then a Trial mode.

Thanks Giveaway of the Day and VisionSuit Software. Looking forward to future application (hopefully those will work).

I teach newbies how to use the computer, and a lot of my customers are elderly. The first thing I do is show them how to make their web pages appear larger! It's rather a new feature in IE7, so many ppl don't know how to access it...

Make sure the Menu bar is available (Tools, Menu Bar), then click View, Status Bar. Then you'll have access to the Zoom tool...much better than enlarging the font! Clicking the number increases the zoom up to 150%, clicking the tiny arrow on the right side allows you to zoom up to 400%.

Here's some more info comparing MGP and MLM. I'm not pushing one over the other, it's just that people are always saying "that program doesn't do anything, and this one does". That's what's always set me off, people unwilling to look at the features and the Help. Admittedly, a lot of Help files are incomplete, but one can always look at the available options. Both programs have numerous hotkeys. MGP intentionally uses very unusual hotkey combinations, because it's intentionally designed to be useful while running other applications, therefor it uses hotkeys which are designed to not interfere with the application being magnified. Both programs have the ability to specify zoom window coordinates, and to lock and unlock the glass position and settings. Both can rotate, zoom, etc., in small increments using hotkeys. MGP actually has finer zoom via hotkey, and you can also specify an exact value. It can also zoom its own UI. MLM has finer hotkey rotation control via options (default is the same on both MLM and MGP). While both can save a captured image, MLM is clearly much better in that respect, because it can save to a file whereas MGP saves to the clipboard, so the image must be pasted into an image editor and saved from there. MLM also has textures which can be added to the captured images.

If you don't need zoom and image processing, I much prefer dedicated screen-capture utilities, which let you capture an application's windows, objects, and selected screen regions.

DEP exceptions aren't Vista-specific, whether you need a DEP exception depends upon whether you have DEP enabled.

Vista Aero doesn't have any impact on performance if you have any kind of useable video card. I have a relatively crappy video card, and I notice zero performance impact from enabling full Aero. I did take advantage of the Labor Day sales to purchase a better card, although it's still a generation or two behind (and I'll have to purchase some connectors and adapters). While better video and 3D performance will be nice, mostly I'm hoping that its drivers will be better. The video card manufacturers seem to put the most effort into fixing the drivers in their higher-end cards, because that's where the money is. But once newer models come out, you can get the older models cheap.

request: when hide a fixed-position lens and then restore it, prefer that it restore to the same fixed position rather than reverting to following the cursor.

Seems heavy on resources - 60-99% on MS XP pro SP3 on older Athlon 1.44 system. I set it to 100% (=no magnification) 900x900 fixed and turned down the red to get a big bluish overlay for those glaring websites that consider their white background very !important (like GOTD, Google Reader etc.) so a bookmarklet can't change it. Too much glare for some midnight surfers. :-)

I feel your concern. To the best of my knowledge, it would be sure to at least partially, take over from the previous version. Given the short time span remaining for activation, and barring a more knowledgable response from the Author/Moderator, I'd say that caution is reqiured.
If U have Norton's Ghost or similar, a 'ghost' backup is your safest bet.

Having said that, I've had no problem installing or running the software (WinXP SP2). Just note that to license the package you MUST EXTRACT the 'KEY.TXT' file to a location such as your DESKTOP, and once you've installed the package, licence it by importing the Key .txt file from the desktop. Voila!
Good luck!

If U are a serious computer user (long usage spells), and care about the future health of your eyes, you'd do well to keep a copy of software like this around to ease the strain on your eyes when they're tired.

This is a really neat package that I have already activated on all the drives I boot onto. Brilliant - thank you guys.

#48, #92 and others - Yep, I agree, although my patience is now being stretched! My comment would read more like "Why don't all you ungrateful, spoilt, and ignorant whiners fuck off and go pee somewhere else."

The comment section is for comments on THE SOFTWARE, it's FUNCTIONALITY and quirks and other related comments. This is NOT the forum for Knocking GAOTD.

But then, I suppose, these cry babies won't even get to read this! They're probably bugging mummy to wipe their ass with the PINK toilet paper, not the white!

Thanks GAOTD, keep the flag flying.

I've followed the instructions to the letter from the comments made here. It should be a straight forward download and registration process and it is not.......very diappointed....with a BIG thumbs down!

What am I missing? The software is free. Comments on its cost are superfluous. When given away on this site it is FREE. Similar vacuous comments are those that describe other free programs. Are they more free than this free one. The idea here is to be able to try out a sofware "free" and if you like it and find it useful perhaps you might want to pay for a later edition should you change computers and loose this free one. If you are not willing to do that then you either didn't like the program, didn't find it useful or perhaps you want to live off someone else. This is gimme gimme gimme. Never give to someone else. Did it ever occur to the ones who only want a freebee software that the developers of software have families and deserve to make some income for their innovations and work. Perhaps you don't do anything worthwhile which deserves compensation but don't pass that hat to everyone else. I don't download every program on this giveaway site, but I like to see what is out there and have enjoyed reading worthwhile comments of those who truly evaluate the progrem whis is the idea of this website. For me I thank GOTD people as well as the developers who allow a FREE evaluation of their work.

I had no problems running it as an administrator using Vista. After downloading it from GAOD, I had Vista extract the files. After running the setup I tried to import the key.txt. Max Lens could not find the key.txt file. I had to have Vista re-extract only the key.txt file and then Max Lens was able to find it. I don't know why it took 2 times because Vista found the original key file.

If the GOTD team can't find any decent companies to give their software away for 1 day then perhaps the big mistake was to chop the games site down to 2 days per week.

It's looking like it would have been bettet to have this site just giving rubbish and repeats away at the week-end!

I also notice, When the Thumbs down has the majority, The GOTD supporters rush to click *No* on the honest comments and *Yes* on the made up supporters comments LOL!
Look at todays, The thumbs down at present is 61% and negative comments (being HONEST) are all in the -10 to 15 or more.

(Note also the supportr clicking go to the lower scored comments so they can hopefully be seen to be supporting!)

Lets face it, Todays giveaway is'nt that much use unless your sight is poor and monitor too small.
The poor un-install feature did'nt help and it took me a while to get rid of the program. A system restore eventually had to be done.

Thankfully, your freeware site is much better so thanks for that anyway :-)

Installed on XP, worked beautifully simply by following the directions in the readme file, EXACTLY as given (e.g. extracting the files to their non-compressed state before installation).

I did have a moment's worry when, after the importation of the license key (which it did indeed accept as valid), the program seemed to hang -- the key importation dialog box remained in place, but clicking on it merely brought a beep of nonfunctionality. However, when, after a moment or two more of this, I tried to <ALT>-TAB to another application, to see if the computer was hung, or whether it was just the program, the problem resolved the moment I struck the key combination. I don't know whether it was a coincidence of timing, or whether it needed a prod in its little interrupts (I've seen programs which do, sometimes), but the key importation dialog box went away, and was replaced with one thanking me for using the program.

A note about the delay that may be encountered after importing the key would be a good thing; I'm wondering if one of the other comments, about the system "crashing" after the key was imported, might not have been due to this same issue.

Alert to the issue of immediate magnification of a portion of my screen, and not wanting to fight that during the key importation process, I had told the program NOT to launch automatically after installation, so I was able to launch it myself, at a time of my choosing, instead. (I chose *after* the browser confirmation of the program's installation.)

However, I'm surprised that people had so much trouble with this element, as the installation process includes a screen in which the most essential hotkeys are disclosed, including the one for hiding/showing the magnifier. I used that one (<CTRL>-V) immediately when I brought the program up, and so I was able to configure the program without having to work through the then-unwanted magnification. The hotkeys work beautifully.

I immediately set the magnification size to 100%, which allowed me to keep the magnifier on-screen, and use it for other purposes, without having any unwanted magnification confusing my mouse movements.

Speaking of those other purposes, while I know I'll have a variety of uses for the magnification and filters in my work (as an independent contractor offering graphic design, web design/development, and other IT/communication/publication services) and play (including yesterday's object hunting game), the feature which clinched the deal for me was rotation.

I use Firefox, with ImageZoom, and it's all well and good to have that and other magnification options in other programs, but I work independently due to medical problems which regularly have me using the computer while lying down, and I have been actively wishing for a tool which would allow me to rotate my desktop onto its side for easy reading while in that position.

By the same token, I regularly deal with photos in email and on the web, which have not been rotated by the person sharing them (such as on realty sites, when I am househunting, or in family emails), and it is annoying to have to either crane my head to the side (straining my neck, especially during protracted or detailed viewing), or pull each photo out of its context and open it in a secondary application, simply in order to view it from the correct orientation.

This tool has completely eliminated any need for me to do that. The amount of medical care that I've regularly required in the past in order to compensate for strained muscles from extended sideways viewing sessions alone would pay for this application; factor in the time saved in compiling detail screenshots for user guides, or examining variations in alignment of as little as one pixel, and its easy to see that the work hours saved by having this application will rapidly add up, creating a $ value far beyond the asking price.

So, for those users who have wondered what use any non-visually impaired person might have for this tool, I just have this to say -- when's the last time you had to crane to the side to view a photo, and cursed the person who hadn't taken the time to rotate it before posting/sending it? The rotation feature is still the clincher for me.

But the other tools are still useful. When's the last time you had to choose between two inappropriate levels of zoom in a program which didn't have fine enough control to offer the level you actually needed? Or, if you're a designer, how convenient is it to manually greyscale every item you work on, in order to make sure that they contrast is adequate for the colorblind? One pass with this tool, using the greyscale filter, can easily answer that question -- without forcing you to constantly switch back and forth between settings in your graphics program or desktop settings.

The uses seem relatively endless to me.

This is a definite keeper, so far as I'm concerned.

My only complaint is that it won't run on my older Win98 systems, so I can't install it to my secondary and tertiary computers, which tend to be the ones I'm most often using when I'm working (or browsing for pleasure) while lying down on my side. If that backward compatibility can be achieved, the portion of the market (such as much of China, last I checked) which is still on Win98 might well justify the development investment.

i had trouble finding the key.txt also. i copied the file to MagicLensMax directory, which is why i had no further difficulties.

suggest if you open in Notepad, not to Save, cause it looks like some of the key is not in ASCI equivalents and you will ruin the key.

i was incredibly annoyed with the Magnifyer in the middle of everything until i realized that i could look And Use all facets of the window by taking the cursor to the appropriate positions. everything on my taskbar was there, all my system tray icons, and hence everything i needed to press.

As a Game Player member of GAOTD, i too applaud the very real need met by this program. Golden Prague will be Golden with this assistant and also the Freeze Time trainer. i thank the Gods of Chaos as well as the Teams for allowing MLM and Golden Prague to be delivered together.

the options and the hotkeys (esp: Ctrl-Shift-L to release the mouse from the lens, and make the lens stationary, and Ctrl-Shift-V to hide the lens) make it too easy for me. i will be using this version because it does what i need right now, and i may be slow, but i am Not stupid.

Marlene (70) this software lets you lock the position of the magnifier window with the hotkey . Check the help files Using Magic Lens-Locking/Unlocking the Lens.

Glad you brought this up - I will probably use this a lot.

Thumbs up from me. I had already installed a 30 day free trial of another magnifying glass program and the trial was almost over. It loaded similarly to the other one (Magic Glass Pro IIRC) so I wasn't surprised when it popped up right away and I already knew how to turn it off.

No problem importing the registration key by following the insstructions in the readme file.

I am currently having visual problems (which may not improve) and, as a self employed bookkeeper, I was having difficulty with the accounting software I use, which can not be set to expand text. A magnifying progam will be a life saver for me. It could mean the difference between keeping my business running or going tits up.

I will have to play around with the settings as I found it a stretch to actually get the very top and bottom of the screen. I'm sure there is a 'snap' tool that will let me see them more easily. Just don't have the time at the moment... working on a deadline.

I use a notebook computer, as opposed to a desktop, and I find this type of applications to be very useful because I like using a regular keyboard instead of the notebook keyboard and that means that I have the notebook screen further away than normal.

The application is particularly useful when reading websites that were coded in a way that the 'increase font' function of web browsers do not work.

Perhaps other people don't see the need for this type of application either because they have a much larger screen, or because their screen resolution is not very large. My screen resolution is 1440 by 900, and that results in text being very small when using my notebook computer with an external keyboard.

I liked Magic Lens Max 5.0.2, but I have decided NOT to keep it, and instead I am sticking with Magnifying Glass Pro. The reason for not keeping Magnifying Lens Max is that its claim to support full screen magnification is partly false. They ONLY support full screen magnification if your screen resolution is less than 1280 by 1280. So if you have a screen with higher resolution, you will NOT be able to use full screen magnification with Lens Max 5.0.2, whereas you WILL be able to use it with Magnifying Glass Pro.

Please also note that the registration key provided to us by Magic Lens Max 5.0.2 doesn't seem to work if you download the standalone installation file from their website. That means that if you install Magic Lens Max today and for some reason you have PC problems and are forced to reinstall your software you will NOT be able to reinstall Lens Max 5.0.2; since the setup file that is included with the Giveaway of the Day zip file will only work today.

So in a nutshell, while this is a nice software it does not provide full screen resolution for current models of computers that have resolutions in excess of 1280 by 1280; and the registration key that they gave us doesn't work with the installation package from their website.

So my personal decision is to stay away from this software until they fix the two issues I mentioned above. In the meantime I am happy with Magnifying Glass Pro that DOES NOT have either of the two restrictions described above.

# 8 - Read the readme file before posting an inane comment. For all those people who post that *they* cannot imagine what this might be useful for, please try to come up something more constructive or don't post at all. (It says much more about your lack of imagination and intelligence than about the applications offered.) This installed beautifully on a Vista Home Premium 64-bit system. It's MUCH better than Magnifying Glass Pro and MUCH MORE compatible with Windows Vista. However, even after copying and pasting the key.txt file, I noticed it still said, "Trial." The tray icon does have an option to import the key and, after having used that option, things went swimmingly.

The only problem I had is that when it starts up, it traps my cursor inside it, which made it hard to get around my screen because I didn't NEED magnification at the time. I hope there's some way to be able to use it when needed, then minimize it instead of it still being on my screen with my cursor imprisoned in the middle!

HELP FOR YESTERDAY'S TRAY COMMANDER
I went on my laptop this morning and had a pop-up window in French! It said that I needed to insert the licence code in Tray Commander.

I had to go into the program file and delete all the languages, leaving English.

When I tried to launch Tray Commander it said it was unregistered. It worked fine yesterday and was licensed to giveawayoftheday.

I had to deinstall the prgram because the day expired. Anyone else had Tray Commander revert back?

I love the program, it is installed on my desktop. I want it on my laptop. Please advise.

Hey! This is a very cool toy! Installed easily, operates perfectly, allows for multiple settings, the magnification feature will come in handy for my 40 something eyesight.. and I really like the "capture" feature which I understand is a standard feature with Vista, but I am using XP so now I have it too. Thanx GOTD!!

The 'unlock' button opens an window with another button to install key.txt. But when pressed it cannot find key.txt though that file is right on the desktop. After several tries I uninstalled and reinstalled the magnifier but got the same result. This is very disappointing. I really wanted this software.

The Readme text says: Installation
Unzip the package you`ve downloaded and run Setup.exe which is included in the package, to install the software. Start the software and register it by importing 'key.txt' file (find Magic Lens Max icon in the System tray->right-mouse click->Import License Key).

Problem:
There is no Imoport License Key on the menu that pops up.
So I can't register the software.

To #38 - Mike Rowe:

The reason the thumbs up/down numbers don't seem to register as they should is that other people have also clicked on them since the last time your computer refreshed the page. So you're seeing not only your own thumbs up/down, but also anyone else's who has clicked on them since you showed up on this page.

It also happens when you click on the "Did you find this comment useful? yes | no" question at the bottom of each comment. It may seem a bit confusing, but it's really just catching up with everybody's clicks.

#62 Unzip the whole thing into a folder than all works great. Windows XP Pro and Vista will allow some programs to run right out of the zip file. Problem is other programs (like this one) needs the files unzipped in order to use them. In this case the text file (key) looks different when zipped than when it is not, so unzip this file that is offered here and try again.

I have found this program to be very useful and future rich enough, as for the cool stuff that vista gives go ahead and run all those bells and whistles and watch your computer slow way down.

This program has installed flawlessly on all four of my computers (ME, XP, XP Pro & Vista. My main computer on my network is the XP Pro.

As I have stated before I am a videographer by trade.

As to the system I'm running:

Computer - Dell Precision 490
2-dual core Pentium 3.2 GHz processors
4GB of RAM
2 280 Gb USB2 hard drives external
2 280 Gb SATA hard drives internal
4 1TB IEEE 1394 (Fire Wire) hard drives external

Operating system - Windows XP professional,SP2

2 - 17" DVI monitors, second monitor switchable to projector
1 - Soundblaster XFI running 7.1 THX configuration
1 - 1Gbls network adapter

And other peripherals

I will be recommending this program for purchase and I will also be telling my friends at the local collage know about this one. The handicapped services department will love all the functionality this program has to offer.

Dear Total Morons
Utilities like this are NOTHING like the built-in Windows features that they are built on top of. That's not to say any of you, who barely know how to use your computers, need something more capable, but your lame comments that these are "the same" blah blah blah are just completely pointless and uninformed.

There are plenty of people - example, anyone who has to document software - who needs to do a screen pop-out to magnify a feature for a screenshot or a diagram. In the past, it required several screen snags and an image editor to put it together. A program like this cuts those steps in half and the time by 3/4. Saves as much as they're asking for the utility on EVERY shot. If I was on a deadline bind and needed a solution, you bet your sweet bippy I'd shell out the forty bucks to get the job done.

Is there true freeware that will do the same thing? Maybe. Kinda-sorta. But unless the developer can make enough ad-click money from their website to pay for the development effort, freeware is going to be frozen in time. That's not to say that commercial software will be any better though... a lot of the stuff GOTD offers has some buggy/compatiblity issues. But then, most of it sells for under $100 and is not what I'd call "mass market" so I wouldn't expect anything else. Sure, you'll find a diamond here and there, but they're apt to be diamonds in the rough, even if a developer is charging for them. If you want pro tools, not toys, you pay pro money. Acrobat Pro costs $400. Get it?

Thank you, GOTD, for yet another useful utility.

I had no trouble installing this on my XP laptop. I (1) unzipped the downloaded .zip file into its own folder, (2) ran Setup.exe, (3) closed the magnifier when it opened after installing, and (4) imported key.txt from the folder where I unzipped it. No sweat.

The program seems to work just fine, though I have not tried out all the functions.

#71: I just tried Magic Lens on my dual-monitor setup (laptop + external screen) and it worked flawlessly.

#54, #67: Hypercam captures screen activities. I don't think it has a magnifier function. In contrast, Magic Lens doesn't capture activities, only static screens. This is clear from the programs' descriptions.

To Jaque Black - comment 75

Thanks for you comment "lock the lens (Ctrl+Shift+L) so it won’t follow the cursor".

It works perfect so the lens does not move and I can use it with two windows and not lose the focus. - Did not know I could do this. Makes this program very useable for me.

Again, for those who failed to import the License Key file:

If you are running an older version of Magic Lens Max (by copying&pasting the license key) you need to uninstall it first. In this version you only need to import the key.txt file (the easier way)

For those who failed to import the License Key file:

I would like to say that certainly a VALID License Key file has been included in the Giveawayoftheday package.

First you need extract the included key.txt file into a folder where you want to store it.

To import your license key, click the Unlock button in the main window, or right-click on the lens icon in the system tray, and select Import License Key... from the popup menu, the Import License Key dialog box will display.

Click the Import button, the Open License Key File dialog appears, use the Look in drop-down list to navigate to the folder where you stored the key.txt file, and then click Open.

After importing the license key the software will be unlocked and converted into a licensed version.

I didn't have a hard time registering it. It seems the dialog box which comes up for you to import the key.txt isn't too copy&paste friendly, even if you paste the entire file name in there. I don't think this is a problem with the funtionality of the software itself, maybe just how it used the Windows API function. I am on WinXP SP2 by the way, in case it is giving problems on another platform.

Just browse for the keyfile and select it and it should be imported fine. And remember to see the comments above so the software won't surprise you when it is executed!

#62 Don't try to activate the "license" because you will get an "invalid" message. Instead....change the pathway to the folder you unzipped the download to....and choose the key code txt instead. Then it will activate.

(QUOTE)Sorry, but the “registration key” provided with the “Magic Lens Max” zipped file doesn’t work! When I tried to “import” it (they have a very clumsy way of doing that, by the way), I got an error message that said the registration key was INVALID.
__________________________________________________________
(REPLY) Nothing is wrong with the program! You were trying to import the "registration key" from the C drive program files, (it automatically brings you to that) Find where you have the file and it will work ok. Suggestion, save to a 'download' folder and unzip the program to the download folder. It will be easy to find the 'key text'.
