Excuse me. Hello. Is anyone there?

I installed this on my USB drive and now it is portable AND registered. Pretty cool, huh? That's what you yahoos should have done.

Still, I will remove it, because it is really lame software, so elementary, but nice try from a new startup company (I think).

Anyways, we need to encourage our upstarts - they are our next generation!

It took 2 minutes to install, your kids can't be still for that long? Besides the program really kind of stinks.

Fifi,

You are kidding. Right? If not, you did yourself a favor by waiting too long to unzip it. You would likely have been trying to wipe it off your system within 10 minutes.

# 112:

"...And people I know who still have dial up connection hate anything that takes a lot of memory and time to load..."

Yep, I'm still on dial-up - being way out in the boonies, it is a mere 28 KB/s. So, I absolutely hate flash intros to web sites, especially when there is no "skip intro" link available.

Despite this, I looked at # 59's demos [see below].

# 59:

Take a look at my demos I created with it and see what you think!
1: http://www.springfieldsolutions.com/menu/
2: http://www.springfieldsolutions.com/menu/menu2/

I'm surprised no one commented upon the amusing tidbit in each one: the text title for one menu item in each demo is an apt commentary on the quality of today's offering.

I have read the comments and looked at the sample slide show that it creates - I think http://www.flshow.net/carousel/examples/ex2.html is almost exactly the same and it is free (only thing different is that it doesn't have adds over it and does not have links)- seems to me that the creator has just taken an open source project and added a few lines of code.

And look at here http://www.flshow.net/carousel/examples/ more features than the one offered.

no webmaster would use this now, as same as nobody would use frontpage today. it's from the generation of the 90's IE4 and N4 holy war, and we each of us don't want to see again this hell.
If you want some nice premade menu system [with optionally some cool effects], I'll recommend JSCookMenu
http://jscook.yuanheng.org/JSCookMenu/index.html

I've tried some CSS only menu too, but it's still not well usable, especially when it's embedded. But well, that's what we can expect from IE6 and 7 when it's about CSS.

I am surprised that the maker didn't showcase the program's abilities by using it to make an introduction on it's own webpage. What better way to show what a software you're selling can do, than to use that software to make its own intro?

Personally when I go to a site, I don't like waiting for a flash introduction to do it's thing, I want to see the things that I went to the site to find in the first place!

And people I know who still have dial up connection hate anything that takes a lot of memory and time to load

I think
1. the more we can make positive suggestions for improvements of the things we criticize about a program,

2. the more constructive we can be in criticism when commenting on a program,

3. the more we can try to focus criticism on specific limitations/problems/flaws in the program

4. the more we also remember to PRAISE things that we see about a program that function well and/or that we like about a program,

...the more valuable GOTD's feedback will become to program developers and the more and the better the offerings for GOTD will get as a result.

Perhaps the makers of the software will see the comments making valid negative points about limitations etc, of the program or it's registration process, and make improvements in those areas.

Blaming GOTD for flaws in someone else's software is pointless. As for useless offerings, what is useless to one person may be exactly what the next person needs, and always, tomorrow is another day, another offering. Many times, I've passed on one day's offering and the next day the offering for the day was something I did need!

I too, get the message that this is "unregistered version" when I checked the program's registration info. And I even gave them one of my email addresses that doesn't get much volume of mail, to send their newsletter to. BTW their message asking for email addy says it's reason is partly due to my being a GOTD user, one reason I thought that maybe filling it out would also validate the program.
But after I filled that out and , the prog closed and when I reopened it, it still shows "unregistered version".

I'll give it 1TU for install speed. I'd give it 10TD's for lack of documentation and GUI. For example, slider bars for transparency of menu don't indicate which way is solid and which way is transparent. Little inexcusable things like that for me make this a worthless program. How do you get rid of the balls? I can add a background to the spinning balls and it's amusing to see the balls circling a photo of my kids and I can add menu words like "This program sucks" I can't get rid of the balls! The beg screen at program shut down was the final straw. I made up a pretty clear that I wasn't happy with their attempted pilfering of my email address emails address and will be yanking the program off my laptop. Installed quickly on vista basic, dell, 2g mem.

I thought this would be the ticket, but there are not very many options with this software. Everytime you save a project it saves in only the default directory and changes the rotation speed back to 100 even after changing it manually to slower in the config file. There should be an option to do this within the software. I found that I could not insert into an existing html file (maybe I just don't know how??). There is no tutourial available either within the program or on the website. Easy to use, but lacks instruction. If I had paid the purchase price I would have been miffed.

I download this program and installed it and since the registration is built in; I will say that it is great especially for free. $99.00 is a bit steep however it serves for me a great purpose for designing Intro pages. It was installed on a windows xp-vista ready machine.
Thumbs up and by the way this site is a free site so why does everybody like to complain. No one is forcing anyone to download anything. People have learned to be so un-grateful

#40 Andy,

It's the recommendations for the free and truly useful programs as you and, others, give that really make this site.

Software shouldn't only be installable within a narrow window but, should be portable, back-upable, and restorable. GAotD has some good ones sometimes but, the restrictions are irksome.

Thanks.

-annoying pop-up when opening the program
-"unregistered version" with purchase option on menu
-another annoying pop-up message when closing program
-requiring a name and email even if it's none@none.com before it will let you exit the program the first time (even w/ alt+ctrl+del)
-next to no options within the program itself...although you can create demos of your work for them to use on their website =X
I normally don't leave feedback and do appreciate GOTD and most of the software they make availiable. I have to give this a big FAIL!

#96 - mack - I assure you you'll get some great programs over time, but there certainly are phases when you go for days, weeks, even months and nothing appeals, or the reviews put you off even trying, like today.

GOTD has offered some wonderful stuff and some real doozies too ... I've had the site as one of my Firefox home page tabs for at least a couple of years and have never regretted discovering the site.

Even if a particular day's offering doesn't suit you, or seems to suck, there's usually some helpful person who posts other free alternatives - some of those have been real keepers too.

All in all, I've saved a ton of time and money by sticking around all this time, so I recommend you hang around a while longer.

All the best,

W

"Does this meen that some people should put away their paint brush- because some people are blind? Or, does this meen musicians shouldnt play music- because some people cant hear?"

Of course not, a blind person could go to an art exhibition and listen to an audio of what the picture depicts or have someone read out the info for them. Similarly some deaf people can experience music through vibrations, (Evelyn Glenny is a brilliant deaf musician) for example.
"Sounds to me like you need an art class to go with your web class so that you dont feel left behind."

What has that got to do with it?, a web site should function properly with flash, java, even javascript turned off, if it doesn't then it can still be impossible or at the least very difficult to navigate for the disabled surfer. If you think that graphics are important that's perfectly ok, but it must not solely rely on it to get the message over.

You say 98% of the internet users can use flash, I assume you mean view a page with flash, but you miss my point. Unless you have at least £1000 here in the UK for a screen reader, this does not always come 'flash ready'. In fact in the demonstration I saw the user would have to pay out a quite a bit more for that capability. So regarding the 98% that leaves 2% who can't, and that amounts to quite a lot of people.

Do They Not Matter?

1. Using Flash for a site is not something that should be done unless it is done very very well. Even then it should be done sparingly and to the point. Using Flash for menu building is neither here nor there unless you want to impress the easily impressionable. Having something with such a limited scope is not worth any money nor anyones time.

2. Seeing that Johnny is also the mastermind behind such badly received software as :
- Text Conversion Sofware PRO
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/text-conversion-software-pro/
(74% thumbs down)

and who could forget the very laughable
- Ultimate Unit converter
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ultimate-unit-converter/#comments
(77% thumbs down)
The converter that couldn't even deal with even the most basic of conversions.

I can't say that I'm surprised by the lack of quality, detail and the limited possibilities of this software. The more software I see of him the more I think he needs a hobby more suitable to his talents, fantasy and intellect.

Anyone of us who ever learned to program has gone through the phase of making all kinds of programs but most of us learn soon that unless you get very inspired the chances are that whatever you program someone will have done it earlier and better then you can ever do if for no other reason that they have spend much more time on it then you can while still having a life AFKB. So John, give it rest or at least try to dazzle your fellow classmates with your ColdColdSoftware instead of us.

Installs Fine.
Used Fine
However, when you publish a project it leaves their Website up as a plug on the LOADING screen of your project.
It doesn't appear to be truly registered as it show "Unregistered". However it works like it's registered except I can't remove their name from the project as it's in FLASH. Which is ok because the menu it makes is CRAP!

I agree with #61 and others. Since I played more with the program, its limited effects is not worth even $49.95! Being a web site designer, I would need more options as my site designs using this "tool" would quickly become repetitive.

It doesn't matter if the flash content is not Section 508 compatible for accessibility since clents dictate what they want to use. I will argue the point, but they pay for what they want.

This program is great for what it does. Well worth the "free price"! Really like the ability to preview changes to see what effects certain adjustments do. The program is a keeper for me.

Would like to see free additional plug-ins so you have more options than what is given with the program.

Greetings GAOTD crew

This SW looks quite interesting, I have been looking for somthing with all this capability on producing fully interactive menu's only i want one for creating CD's and DVD's for e.g if i back up one of my game's that consists of 2 or 3 cd's and create a front-end menu on a single dvd that will enable you to install/use them as normal. so far ive no luck finding one??? will this be able to do it if used in conjunction with somthing else or even on its own?

Anyway back to the comment i all so find it hard to believe it is retailed at $99.50 especialy how small the file size is? however if put to the right use it could make you a tidy sum considering what designers charge for web page's. takin that in to-account this has to be one of the best give-aways yet. THANK YOU!!!

If anyone knows of a programme that would produce decent cd/dvd browsers drop it into your comment or mail me okilive@gmail.com it would be greatly appreciated Thanks again!

The program installed and activated (I think) on my WinXP (SP3) Home Ed. computer. I was hoping to put a flashy 'Intro' screen on my personal website with the *Flash Intro Designer." Somehow, I think that got left out: all I see is a menu program with 1 type menu and two examples. The "Help" file (experiment on the Menu Demos) doesn't help at all. Also, there's no option to include background music with the background image; only short soundbytes on the menu items.

Giving up on the Flash Intro Page, I tried to make a Menu Page just to experiment with it. In attempting to use my own sounds, it lists .wav files as an input, but wouldn't play them. It DID play the .mp3 files I used (after refreshing the program).

I can see this as a possible 'slider' menu for displaying photos on a travel or hobby page. Even here, the option is limited: it opens the link in the same window with no option to open a new window. The only way to get back is with the *Back* button on the browser window.

Because it's so limited, I can't see this as a website menu navigator. It's another tool to use -- Thanks GAOTD and HotHot -- but I suspect it'll get very limited usage.

My appreciation to Jeff (Comment #59) for putting today's GiveAway in perspective; to Andy (Comment #40) for a viable alternative; and to Joey (Comment #68) for a unique look at what's possible.

John

Program is ok, BUT...you should be aware that flash and search engine optimization don't always go together. (If this applies to you.) Do a search for flash and search engine optimization and decide for yourself before you use it in a site that you are wanting to get traffic to.

Re: 76
In an effort to be fair, I reloaded your program, thinking I might have missed this. As it turns out, I didn't click on the 'New Project' because it does exactly what I thought it would.. let's you load new images into the same default 2 designs (of which ONLY 2 EXIST). You can just the same click on Demo1 or Demo2 and change the pictures as create a new project. You gain nothing. Yes.. you can add items and delete.. as in more pics with more links.. but you are just formatting.

If you want to argue that there are multiple designs, I will give in and let you that (though I personally don't consider formatting options that), but... the fact remains that there are only 2 menu styles (as I have displayed in 59). You are trying to charge a lot of money for something that is extremely limited in design. This looks to be a simple Visual Basic application.

And.. you even put your site logo on every menu. That's ridiculous. When people buy software for the price you charge, they shouldn't be forced to have a link back to your site. Do you realize how unprofessional that looks?

I'm curious to know the age of the designer. I am thinking you are very young.. perhaps high school? You have much to learn about marketing.

I've tried to be fair.. but in short.. this is a cutesie 2 menu program that is way overpriced and wouldn't even fair well as a free program on planet-source-code.com. The menu programs on that site far exceed what you've attempted here.

....time to uninstall again.

Installs fine on XP SP3. The registration didn't work, so I couldn't create or save any menu. When I tried to close the application, it created havoc with my graphics system and I had to Ctrl-Alt-Delete the damned thing to get rid of it. Besides from these shortcomings, the menues seem to consist of infantile animations that I never, ever would put on my website. They look like something you made from animated GIF:s in 1997. I've been a regular GAOTD customer for more than one year and I appreciate their sevices very much, but this is the first time I have to say "NO THANKS!!!" This is junk software!

Flash IS NOT old and outta date; but in fact just comming into bloom! 98% of the internet users are finally capable of using flash. Flash has been before its time, and even a simple application like this could keep a user interesred in ones website "just as they claim".

This did register for me after it was installed -- it seems to want you to enter a license key in the program window, but you can leave that blank and the program will allow you to publish your menu project anyway. When you look at the resulting .xml file, you can see that there is a license key for GAOTD embedded there, so it looks like it is registering correctly.

However, even in this registered version, your options are pretty limited -- swap out pictures, change backgrounds and sounds, etc. And when the project is done, it has the Hothothot logo all over it, with no option for removing it -- at least not from the .swf itself. There's really no way I can see actual webdesigners paying a hundred bucks for this. I guess it might be cool if you just want a flashy DIY site or something, but not worth what they're asking.

***read this***
Hi there, I downloaded this software and then came back here to read posts. Important!!! this software is $99? the people here dont seem to like it. I use FLASH 8 which is usually less then $300. FLASH 8 does what this program does, but is actually the real deal. I learned Flash in 6 months and use another program called SwfKIT to actually compile some of my Flash documents into EXE files. I am sure a bunch of software available today, and even on GAOTD are written in Flash. What is very very important to know thou, is that Flash "swf files" are not picked up by web Crawlers [web crawlers such as google are always searching the net, logging in links and text for search engines]. If you create a website in Flash, you must also build "LINKS" and place them off screen [example x=-300 y=-300]; so atleast the search engines can read the site. I love Flash, it is so fun and easy to do animations and controls using simple timelines. Very confusing at first because i taught myself. Very very powerful internet language.
If you are going to use this free software for your site, atleast remeber to put real links off the screen-> and also put "any text, and descriptions that are inside of your flash file off screen also [as HTML]" for the search engines.
If you are interested in getting Flash 8 or 9-> remember that there are tons and tons of [open source FLA files] on the internet that are put there by developers so that people like us can pick them apart and learn howto do things.

Re: #75 --

Jeff -- what are you referring to? If you want to add or remove new items, click on 'Add New Item' and 'Remove Item'.

Yes, there is a 'File-New'. Not under the file menu -- but click on the 'New Project' button, right by where it says 'save' project and 'load project'.

Re:70

There are only 2 options for design. These are the two demos. You are confusing formatting with design. Sure, you can replace the pics in these two demos with different ones, change the font size, color and speed of how fast they rotate, and the size of the .swf, but can you really call this a different design? The two designs (as shown in post 59) are all that exist. There is no 'File-New' available. Unfortunately, even a semi-serious web designer will find little value.

This is junk period. A scam & then, here comes John saying it is registered but just doesn't say so. Bologna!!! We're not all idiots here whether you think so or not.
Near featureless & appears quite the scam. Offer a product that is legit or go away. You have wasted ours & GAOTD's time today trying to promote an antiquated half baked, limited, fake registered program thats as useless as any I've seen here in over a year.

strange at first i liked it but now... it's not the best out of other options presented, for example:
# 40: http://www.flshow.net, called: carousel
it has the exact same effect with the same capablities.

the only thing good about this program that it's faster, no need to take the time in carousel so i'll still use it since it's free ( even if it give the unregistered thing because as they say it's 100% full)
